"early today" starts right now. >> we want to begin with breaking news. three dead, nine injured. following a shooting in lafayette, louisiana. among the dead is the shooter who turned the gun on himself and we're waiting to learn more about his identity. so far, police have only identified him as a 58-year-old white male. officials say it appears the gunman entered the theater alone and used the hand gun to fire randomly at film goers during a screening of the movie "trainwreck." >> this is going to be a long and arduous investigation and before we begin to get any of the beginnings of clues of what happened and why this may have happened. >> officials say the gunman had

a criminal history. witnesses describe hearing about six shots. >> we was watching the movie. it was loud like one big bang. i knew it was a gun shot so i grabbed my fiance. before i looked i grabbed her and got her on the floor. and then while all of that is going on i saw where he was. i knew he was at the top left of the theater and pointing the fire arm in a different direction than we were so i knew it was a good time to run. >> actress amy schumer who wrote the film tweeted my heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with those in louisiana. the victims were taken to three different area hospitals. throughout the evening we heard at least one story of heroism.

governor bobby jindal talked about two teachers shot inside the theater. >> even though she was shot in the leg, she had the presence of find the pull the fire alarm and help save people's lives. >> the investigation is still in the early stages. we expect to learn more about it throughout the news conference later this hour. hours before the shooting the bbc aired an interview with president obama who had this comment. >> if you ask me where has been the one area that i feel i've been most frustrated and most stymied, it is the fact that the united states of america is the one advanced nation on earth in which we do not have sufficient commonsense gun safety laws. even in the face of repeated mass killings and if you look at the number of americans killed

since 9/11 by terrorism, it's less than 100. if you look at the number that have been killed by gun violence, it's in the 10s of thousands. >> the president went on to say he will continue on gun control measures. more trouble for hillary clinton. the justice department is considering a request to open a criminal investigation into whether clinton mismanaged classified government information. the "new york times" first reported this story. the request came from inspectors general for the state department and the office of the director of national intelligence. in a june 29th memo, they say clinton's private account contained hundreds of classified email. plus clinton maintains no classified information was handled on the account. the state department declined to comment. we hope to hear reaction from secretary of state john kerry in

an exclusive interview on "today." and the autopsy results have been released about sandra bland. she is the woman who died in jail last week after being arrested during a traffic stop. some had questioned whether foul play was involved. >> reporter: authorities said that sandra bland had killed herself. >> the cause of death is hanging and manner of death is suicide. >> preliminary report includes startling discovery. she either smoked or swallows marijuana while in custody. >> there have been instances or claims about a substantial amount of marijuana found in her system. i can tell you that there has been a confirmation of those results. >> reporter: and evidence that she had recently cut herself. >> there were approximately 30 cut marks on her left wrist which were also in a state of

healing. >> reporter: and there were claims that she had attempted to kill herself due to a loss of a baby but was not suicidal on the date she was arrested. the toxicology report and the booking documents are the latest twists in the story that began when bland was pulled over for allegedly failing to signal a lane change. this is dash cam video edited by nbc news. >> get out of the car now. >> reporter: she was arrested for assaulting the officer. she left a voice mail for a friend after being arrested. >> how does switching lanes with no signal turn into this. voice mail was obtained by station in houston. just three days after the arrest, she apparently hanged herself. and her family says this doesn't make sense. >> she had just gotten to texas the day before and was about to start a job. >> bland's body is in the chicago area for burial. well, a day after his trip to the u.s.-mexico border, the
