lunger the alleged shooter faces a judge. and a mass shooting in a louisiana movie theater where police are trying to find the motive. they're strug that. and struggling to know who was the target. and we will have a nice start out to the weekend, but we are getting ready for a warm up in that microclimate forecast. it's coming up if in a few minutes. plus an obstruction reported on the peninsula. sounds dramatic. i don't think it is. but i will get a couple more details before i let you know >> announcer: from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning and thanks for joining us on this friday morning. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. we begin right now with the man accused of killing a hayward police officer who was heading to court. this afternoon mark estrada will make his first court appearance for the shooting death of is is. >> the investigation into the shooting continues this morning. "today in the bay's" bob redell live at the santa rita county jail where that suspect is

behind bars. up until this point he was still in the hospital. >> reporter: correct. mark estrada sits in the santa rita jail here in dublin awaiting his first court appearance his family's attorney is asking that he not be judged until his entire case is before a court of law. police trans he periferred the 21-year-old man last night from an oakland where he was being treated for a gunshot wound. estrada allegedly shot hayward police sergeant scott lunger early wednesday morning during a traffic stop. sergeant lunger's partner returned fire hitting estrada. hayward police say they have no idea whyest at that did this. they are looking into another lead in this case. investigators would like to know if you recognize this vehicle. this is surveillance camera footage, camera recorded this sedan in mark estrada's oakland neighborhood shortly after sergeant lunger's murder. >> either it fits in the puzzle

and we put it as part of our case or it doesn't and we move on to the next thing. >> reporter: a heart breaking scene yesterday as sergeant scott lunger's colleagues escorted his body from the coroner's office in oakland to the chapel of the chimes in hayward. throughout the route officers saluted his casket while members of the public paid their respects to this 15-year veteran of the hayward police department. sergeant lunger's funeral is tentatively set for next thursday morning at the neighborhood church in castro valley. bob redell, "today in the bay." now to a developing story overnight if in louisiana where a gunman opened fire at a movie theater and killed three people, wounded nine others and then took his own life. we now know several of the victims are in critical condition this morning and all of the victims range in age from their late teens to their 60s. police say the suspected shooter himself is a 58-year-old man. investigators are not releasing this his name, but a bomb squad is investigating suspicious

materials found inside his car. we've also learned that the fbi is now joining in that investigation. louisiana governor bobby jindal met with families it in the hospital and he says one teacher leaped to protect another, possibly saving her life. and a second managed to pull a fire alarm to alert others in the theater. >> this this never happened anywhere but we never imagined it would happen in louisiana, never paneling end it would happen in lafayette. >> bless say the suspect used a hand gun to shoot up that theater. >> the shooting comes as a jury is tee siding whether james holmes should be put to death for the theater shooting in aurora, colorado. mean while, police say the shooter in louisiana does have a criminal history, but nothing in recent years. a frantic call from two women worried for their lives now we're learning more about the knife wielding man shot by fremont police earlier in the week. fremont police say troy francis threatened and chased two women he lived with inside of their

home. when officers got to the house police say that francis charged at them, still holding an eight-inch knife. both officers shot francis and he is now recovering in the hospital. the officers were not injured. we move to a tragic scene out of vallejo where police are investigating a murder-suicide. neighbors tell us they heard several gunshots last night coming from a home on songwood drive. when officers arrived at the found one man shot at the front door. he is now at the hospital with life-threatening injuries. inside the house they found another man and a woman shot dead. neighbors tell us there were several children living inside that home. >> fortunately from what i know no kids were hurt, but sadly, there were kids in the house when this happened. >> investigators are not releasing the names of the victims. they are also not saying who pulled the trigger. a big break this morning in a recent deadly south bay shooting. police say they have made two arrests. it happened june 26th in east san jose near terilyn avenue and

pensacola drive. the victim 17-year-old jonathan natareno died at the scene. two men now face murder charges. investigators say one of the two opened fire after some sort of argument. happening right now, a wildfire still raging near lake berryessa. and a growing. this as crews enter a third day of fighting the flames. thousands of ache aers card and the fire still only 15% contained. right now it is burning off of highway 128. mandatory evacuations are still in effect for some of those living in the area. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang joins us live at the incident command post with the latest numbers. you say there is a sense of progress out there. >> reporter: there is. and i just spoke with someone at cal fire who says we should get an update to the numbers maybe in the next hour, but it does seem more calm. we are at the new command post in vacaville. this is to accommodate the large number of people fighting this fire. we are at almost 1,400

firefighters and support staff and that is just about triple the number we had starting yesterday. the wragg fire is still at 6,900 acres, still just the one barn that burned down and one house damaged. that's all good news. containment rests at 15%. firefighters have been working this in what they call, quote, treacherous terrain, rugged, steep, and covered in dry brush and grass. their goal is to protect lives and properties and have saved many homes. >> it's about 40 feet. yeah. burned a lot of my irrigation tubing, but didn't damage much else. we are in good shape here. >> reporter: now, this san francisco fire crews scans neighborhoods checking for hot spots. many bay area fire departments are out here helping along with a lot of air support. four air tankers and 13 helicopters helped fight with water drops. we should be expecting to see more firefighters coming in in

the next hour i'm told, there is a briefing ear at 7:00 in the morning where they are going to talk about the the attack plan. of course, we will keep youup dated with the numbers with the numbers when we get them. we're following the kybers fire. right now highway 50 is closed as crews battle the names there. about 100 acres are burning on both side of the highway near sly park road west of myers. a campground in the area is also under evacuation. firefighters say the flames are only 5% contained this morning. ironically the cause of this fire might be the same as the one this in napa solano counties. a crash, investigators are looking at this video of a truck that lost a wheel, then caught fire on the side of the road. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall to find out what kind of conditions firefighters are facing today. >> today and tomorrow will be the best days to try to get this under control because weather conditions are still fairly

favorable. not much of a wind, right now the wind coming out of the southwest at 5 miles an hour and for that fire that is just south of lake berryessa the temperature is at 57 degrees, humidity at 85% and that of course goes town as we go through the day. as you head out today across the bay we will have the morning clouds and fog, sunrise ats 6:06. a warmer day. more sunshine at the coast than yesterday, more peeks of the sunshine coming out and the fog returns tonight. sunset will be at 8:22. the warming trend begins today and as we head into the weekend i will show you just how hot it gets and what to expect and maybe help you plan what to do this weekend, too. that's coming up in the next microclimate forecast. we're going to look toward the peninsula where i told you about an obstruction. that was the general term. still no specifics, but i do know it's the off ramp for belmont. that's the only thing that was affected and it sounds like that's not a big deal. chp going to clear that from the

report. no problem for the san mateo or dumbarton bridge. easy flow of traffic except for here. west 580. let's take a look at the dublin area. look at the good spacing right here. an easy flow of traffic despite the signal. a little bit of break up. enough to show you it's an easy drive out of the altamonte. a popular east bay pier is now off limits due to safety concerns. inspectors noticed trouble with berkeley's municipal pier before the july 4th celebrations. at the time the city closed the pier to all vehicle traffic citing a crumbling concrete deck and corroded steel supports. now pedestrians are not going allowed either. happening today, you might want to load up on your breath mints. garlic breath abounds in the best possible way. looking live at the gilroy garlic festival and we love to see this. they are flaming hot, who knows

with the relaunch of a historic streetcar line. get ready for a ride on the e train. that is the embarcadero streetcar line, the e train. for now it's only going to run on weekends. next day it's going to go for seven days a week. using track for the f line and t line which passes the ballpark. the city last ran an e line in 1947. and what is art? it depends on who you ask in oakland apparently. that's where a legal battle is brewing over a city ordinance requiring art installations for all new development projects. right now developers are suing calling this requirement unconstitutional. the city passed the measure last year requiring up to 1% of development costs be used for on site public art. there are at least five other bay area cities that do the same sort of thing including san francisco and san jose. a hayward man is going to break ground on a new con umt

commemorating the victims of the september 11th terror attacks. it will be next to the old city hall building on mission boulevard in hayward. michael emerson designed that memorial which is going to feature four granite mono lits representing the planes in the attacks. he has made a name for himself building other 9/11 memorials. he helped produce the flight 93 memorial in shanksville, pennsylvania. watch where you pee if in san francisco. the city is fighting back against people who decide to urinate on city streets. it is a splashy new idea we will say. the public works department is installing liqucquid repellant paint this in ten locations around the city. >> when people urinate on the wall the pee actually bounces back and hits your pants or gets you wet. so we are piloting it to see if

we can discourage people from peeing on many of our hot spots. >> some german cities have had success with this pee repelling paint. the paint is haired with signs saying hold it, this is not a public restroom, please respect san francisco, but as we all know in san francisco sometimes a potty is hard to find. >> no splash guards available. you are just walking around. all right. presidential candidate hillary clinton planning to make a major economic address later today. >> scott mcgrew, she wants american companies and investors to think more long-term. >> and we are all guilty of this. i contribute to it. i tell you how stock is doing over the course of a day or two or how a company did over a quarter. secretary clinton plans to ask american businesses to think longer term. one of the things she's going to do is criticize the stock buy back, that's when a company uses the extra cash it may have to purchase its own shares back from the shareholders. the shares then cease to exist with fewer shares in the mix the

value goes up. that's great short term but clinton is going to say wouldn't it be better if those companies took that money and used it for something, to build something something or use it for research is and development. meanwhile, back in washington there are calls for the justice department to investigate secretary clinton's e-mails. you will recall she sent tens of thousands of e-mails from a personal account while she was secretary of state. the wall street journal says this morning inspectors general at the state department are recommending the justice department launch an investigation into whether any of those e-mails were classified and should not have been sent through a personal server. let's check your news before the bell, landon dowdy is live at cnbc headquarters. >> wall street looks to get back to its winning ways after the markets fell for a third straight day on thursday. the dow falling back into the red for the year and it's on its longest losing streak in more than six weeks.

futures are higher thanks to amazon, starbucks and others. amazon soaring in after hours trading as it reported a surprise profit thanks to amazon prime. that jump helping to push its market value past walmart. investors will get new data on this new home sales. the dow falling to 17,731, the nasdaq down 25 to 51.46. back over to you. the head of google's is self-driving cars made a rare speech defending google's safety record. they reminded an audience that the automated vehicle symposium in michigan that while google cars have gotten into accidents in each and every time it was the fault of a human. then he said gently that the press was inflating the issue. you will recall, we kind of went over some of those headlines when this first came out. the press got it wrong basically. i mean, google cars are perfectly safe as long as humans don't get anywhere near them.

as long as the user base keeps growing. the service recently passed 65 million subscribers worldwide. uber is hoping to bring a few smiles to people in in san francisco today. the ride sharing service will deliver ice cream on demand in the city by the bay. all you have to do, open up your uber app, set your location, select ice cream. they will deliver ice cream anytime between 11:00 this this morning and 5:00 this afternoon. it will cost you $25 but there will be enough ice cream to share with your friends. happening right now, you are taking a live look out in louisiana this morning. in lafayette we're awaiting a press conference which is about to take place about the theater shooting that happened yesterday. three people killed, several still in critical condition this morning in the hospital. sounds like they are starting right now. let's take a quick listen in and find out what's being discussed. >> -- our victims are macy brow

a white female, 21 years of age, she died on scene. gillian johnson, a white female, 33 years of age, died at the hospital. of the nine victims that were hospitalized, two have been released, one victim remains in critical condition. the quick response by law enforcement is believed to have prevented further death. >> it looks like we are listening to representatives of the lafayette police department address ago major shooting. three people died, nine injured. for the first time we are learning the identities of some of the victims. this is a story that has gripped the one tree and we will continue to follow that story as we learn for information. we do want to check in with meteorologist kari hall. we're expect canning hot temperatures for next week, but the weekend sounds like it's going to be pleasant. >> the weekend is nice, but next week the heat gets cranking and goes way up.

you just want to get outside and take a nice long walk and take it in while you can. as we take a look outside at what's happening right now, temperatures starting out in the 50s and 60s with mostly clear skies for the south bay and some morning clouds for san francisco and also the north bay, coastal fog developing there. 48 degrees in the north bay. so chilly, warming up to 82 degrees in the north bay today a lot of sunshine, mixture of sun and clouds in san francisco, and the peninsula today reaching 77 degrees. checking out what's happening in the tropics, felicia yesterday developed and it was a tropical storm, now a tropical depression and it will continue to diminish as we go into the next couple of days so that will not be an issue as we go into the new workweek. what will be an issue will be this heat. now, this weekend will still be nice, we will have 60s across the bay, 70s inland, 80s, look at what happens in the middle of next week. we could be talking about triple digits again for the tri-valley and the far east bay and for the

south and north bay 90s and even 80s along the coast. san francisco will also be really hot as we go into next week. so as you enjoy the weekend here is one event you will want to check out, the gilroy garlic festival. yes, they have garlic ice cream. it will be warm with a lot of sunshine in the next couple of days so o maybe you will want to try that out. this weekend it will be once again nice, mild and highs reaching into the 70s and 80s for most across the bay. in san francisco expect highs near 70 degrees. let's see how that traffic is moving with mike. overall things are very easy right now, it's early on a friday, just a little build out of the altamonte in toward livermore for west 580. i want to warn folks about the garlic festival starting today and activity even this morning, 101 near 152 christmas hill park over on the west side, that will be crowded all week. even if you're heading past or

in the school. a forest official suffered injuries after that cat bounced on him when he got too close. eventually a team of vets with tranquilizers showed up to get the leopard out of the school. luckily no kids were hurt. today we could get a closer look at pluto. more images are on their way and members of nasa's in new horizon's team will give us an update this afternoon also as they release the new photos. they are expected to discuss the latest results from the spacecraft's flight through the pluto system earlier this month. last week new horizon space chaff flewrq past pluto. >> an update on that napa fire right after this break. death of hayward sargeant scott

to the santa rita jail around 9:00 last night after an oakland hospital finished treating him for at least one gunshot wound he received during his encounter with hayward police. later today estrada will make his first appearance in court where we expect he will be formally charged. police say estrada shot and killed sergeant lunger without warning during a traffic stop. again, this was early wednesday morning. estrada was hurt when sergeant lunger's partner fired back at him. estrada's who are, the suspect's mother, tells our sister station telemundo that estrada is a good son with a good heart. here is what his family's attorney this to tell us yesterday. >> they ask that no judgment be passed until the entire case is before a court of law. >> reporter: hayward police would like you to take a look at

this surveillance video and see if you recognize this vehicle. this is a sedan that was recorded this mark estrada's oakland neighborhood shortly after the murder of sergeant lunger in hayward. hayward police would like to speak with the driver of that car. officers won't say why, but they teal that that person could play a significant role in their investigation. reporting live here in dublin, bob redell, "today in the bay." now to a developing story overnight in louisiana. within the past 15 minutes authorities have identified the gunman who opened fire at a movie theater. police say 59-year-old john houser killed two people and wounded nine others before taking his life. he has been in lafayette since the beginning of this month. he was staying at a hotel there where officers found wigs, glasses and disguises in his room. lafayette's police chief say they are still looking for a motive. >> it is apparent that he was intent on shooting and then

"today in the bay" stephanie chuang is live at the incident command post with the latest numbers. steph, the fact that the command post has moved to another county is an indication of how the fire is spreading. >> reporter: it is. it does seem calmer. i want to tell you that in just the last few minutes i have seen ten cal fire vehicles coming am am, so fire crews are moving in for the shift change. you can see a crew here. this includes support staff,

equipment folks and dozers getting some coffee during a break. there is a briefing set to be here at 7:00 this morning focused on the attack plan for the day. now, we got video of the only building to burn down, it's this barn near highway 128 west of winters. thankfully no one was in or near it when it went up in flames wednesday night. the only other structure impacted by the wragg fire was a house damaged by flames. at 6,900 acres the size has not grown since yesterday afternoon. firefighters battling rugged steep terrain and very due roads to limited access. with homes still in the path of flames cal fire says it's not letting up on the attack. >> we are not taking any channels with the percent contained. we still have a lot of open lines to build. so we are not taking any chances. >> reporter: so this is a fire tight heavily dependent on air support because of the topography. yesterday they used four air tankers and 13 helicopters. the number of people fighting it

has ballooned from 500 at the start of yesterday morning to almost 1, 400. i want to bring you back life where an entire group of more than a dozen cal fire firefighters have just walked in, they are here also to get their little morning break and again this is a shift change, they are having their briefing in a little over an hour, maybe an hour and a half at 7:00 this morning. again, they will go over exactly how to attack this fire. live here in vacaville, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." more than 1,300 people working to put that fire out. we are also following this fire ripping through south lake tahoe. right now highway 50 closed off as crews are battling the flames. 100 acres burning on both sides of the highway near sly park road. a campground in the area is being evacuated as well. firefighters say the flames are only 5% contained this morning. ironically, the cause of this fire might be the same cause of the napa county fire. a crash. investigators are looking at this video of a truck that lost

its wheel, you see it right there, and caught fire on the side of the road. we saw that those firefighters there at the command center in solano county were getting their briefing this morning, they are definitely going to be talking about the weather. meteorologist kari hall, what do you think they are going to hear about the fire fight? >> right now the conditions are favorable, i think that's what we will talk about because the humidity still high, temperatures are low but becomes more unfavorable as we head into next week. as you head out today it is all clear across the south bay. we still do have the morning clouds and fog along the coast. it will be a warmer day with more sunshine at the coast. you had the cloudy day the past couple of days. today expect a little more sunshine and then the fog returns tonight. sunset will be at 8:22. heading into the weekend we will start a gradual warming trend, meaning each day it will go up a couple of degrees and next week it will be down right hot.

i will have more on that coming up in a pew minutes. let's see how traffic is moving with mike. we just saw these fast track lanes over the last 40 seconds go from no problem to filled up. still not a problem, the metering lights just turned on a pew seconds ago and there is the backup at the bay bridge. we don't have is a big problem as you travel through the area. reminder, giants/a's tonight at 7:15 and through the weekend so there will be bridge traffic as well. over in concord we do have that slowing for highway 4, but there was a crash and there is a motorcycle involved. one of the bigger ones, one of the during bikes and it's over on the shoulder. no major injuries reported but we still see a lot of slowing over the last few minutes. even getting over toward 242. there's the rest of your bay. crash southbound 101 right toward highway 85. farther south you are going to hear the phrase -- that's my breath, right, kris? >> i think so. happening today, it is the start

they couldn't solve it here in washington. now they are giving it a full review on the campaign trail donald trump at the u.s./mexico border still on message but not calling immigrants racist or murderers. >> we have a tremendous problem on the board with the illegals coming in. the union that invited trump bowed out, but protesters showed up. >> how can he disenfranchise over 50% of the population. >> reporter: in washington the so-called donald trump act cleared the house. it would prohibit federal funds to sanctuary cities that protect immigrant suspects from deportation. >> there are cities more interested in providing a sanctuary for those criminals than they are providing a sanctuary for their law abiding citizens. >> hillary clinton tells supporters we need more. >> we are not going to deport 11 or 12 million people. we are not going to do it. the best answer for that is comprehensive immigration reform. >> p fixing our broken

start out with temperatures in the 50s and 60s across the bay. we are still in the 50s. look at the north bay, 48 degrees, still some fog along the coast, you can see a little bit more clearing this morning compared to yesterday. i think that will be what we can expect over the next few face. the high today 67 degrees in the city, 73 in the east bay, peninsula 77 degrees, while the south bay makes it up to the lower 80s. big game tonight at at&t park, the battle on the bay. the first pitch will be televised right here on nbc bay area, 63 degrees, into the upper 50s if you are heading out to the game bring something nice and warm to wear. it will be breezy. a lot going on this weekend like the berkeley kite festival. both saturday and sunday a lot of sunshine and highs reaching into the low 70s and if you are heading out to levi stadium for football it will be in the lower 70s at 11:00 in the morning, by 3:00 in the afternoon 81 degrees, a lot of sunshine and warm temperatures. it gets even warmer as we go

into next week. now, this weekend once again, will still be mild, but next week the heat begins to build. we could be talking about triple digits here, especially for the east bay. the north and south bay highs in the 90s and 80s along the coast. to this weekend once again still some warm temperatures but nothing compared to what we will experience next week. i will have another look at the microclimate forecast coming up. the bay bridge toll plaza this is not a surprise the metering lights are on, the fast track lanes are creeping along and that's visible and that's good over here. look at your maps, we are also talking about the approach, which there's no drama for the east shore freeway or for the pays. concord the slowing halves going on between port chicago highway and 242 that completely cleared up in just a few minutes as they cleared that motorcycle crash off the roadway. no major injuries reported but there was a good teal of slowing just a few minutes ago that cleared up. west 580 into livermore a little

slowing, a slight build at the dublin inter change. giants play the a's tonight. keep that in mind. we are learning more about the knife wielding man who was shot by fremont police earlier this week. fremont police say troy francis threatened and chased two women that he lived with and chased them in their own home. when officers got to the home police say francis charged at officers still holding that knife. both officers shot francis. he is now recovering in the hospital. the officers were not hurt. a big break this morning in a recent deadly south bay shooting. police now say they have made two arrests. this happened on june 26th in east san jose near terilyn avenue and tens cola drive. the victim 17-year-old jonathan natareno died on the scene. police say that two san jose men ages 18 and 21 are now facing murder charges. investigators say one of the two opened fire after some kind of argument. a bay area woman is accused of embezzling who are than a

million dollars from the landscaping company where she worked. police asian noncarzenas allegedly stole the money from creek side landscaping. over a two year span she wrote and signed company checks for herself for unearned overtime and bonuses is. she is also accused of using the company credit card to pay for trips and for cars. homeowners on alert. five east bay homes burglarized in less than 24 hours. was it the work of one crew or thieves multiple? police in elsa read dough say one of those homeowners returned to find this, a bedroom ransacked, belongings pulled from shelves. the burring glars likely entered the home by prying open the front door. police say two burglaries in a day would be unusual, but five is outright stunning. >> we did have five residential burglaries that happened yesterday on wednesday. we do have some suspects for at least one of the residential burglaries and we are trying to

figure out if maybe those suspects were tied in with q$9c of the other burglaries that day as well. there is a vague description of three suspects but still not certain if all five burglaries are related. a major development project in san ramone is reportedly getting a mixed response at this point. the contra costa times reports that developers want to build a 169 unit apartment complex with commercial space on deer wood road and san ramone valley boulevard not far from 680. in an interview with the times a planning commissioner says she likes the idea of development there but that this project is lacking cohesion. they've built an empire, amazon is now bigger than walmart, at least in one way you can measure. wall might might sell more stuff but amazon worth more on wall street. >> this is a first for amazon, topping walmart like this this. amazon turned a profit in the last quarter, it's stock jumped on the news and it puts amazon's

water. looking at all the microclimates today, highs reaching into the upper 70s, lower 80s in the south bay peninsula. 76 degrees in mountain view, 67 degrees in san francisco. north bay in the 70s and 80s as well. fairly mild and about average for this time of year, but once again we are expecting a heat up as we head into the next week. are the roads heating up? a little bit. san jose and it's a friday so this this mild build, actually we just missed the shot of a nice good heavy volume of traffic for a few seconds was right here. 101 north of 680 for those sensors to turn from green to yellow to orange now. same thing for 87, a slight build for the south bay. we see the only real issue heading south toward gilroy 152, that's where we also see traffic all weekend for that gilroy garlic festival. we will just keep mentioning that because that could be a surprise for some but shouldn't be because we have been talking about that. the approach to the bay bridge

gunman. police say 59-year-old john houser killed two people and wounded nine others last night before taking his own life. they said he had been in louisiana for a month staying in a motel. police say they found wigs and disguises when they purchased his room and police believe that housier intended to escape afte the shooting. >> the gunman's original plan was to he leave the theater alive, his car was parked at the exit. as he was leaving in the crowd, he saw the law enforcement, local police officers, went back inside, that's when he shot and killed himself. >> police say of the nine people injured in the shooting two have been released from the hospital, one is still if in critical condition. authorities have not identified a motive for the shooting but they believe houser wasz8sñ wor alone and there are no other suspect or threats. happening today, the man accused of killing a hayward police officer heads to court into this afternoon mark estrada is going to make his first court appearance
