the marathon. thank you, we will check back in a bit. happening now. let's give you a live look at the golden gate bridge. thousands of runners on the streets of san francisco. take a look, there they are. these are some of the elite marathoners as they start to wrap up the end of the race. 38th annual san francisco marathon, half marathon started 5:30 this morning. this is a look at the flurry of activity on the embark der oh yesterday. dozens of people working to make sure the event runs smoothly. there's a new element this year. top finishers qualify for a spot at the 2016 olympic trials to represent the u.s. in brazil next summer. we want to give you another live look at the runners on the golden gate bridge, a special marathon. not many you get to run across with a view like this. still to come, the 5k. second half marathon at 8:15 in golden gate park. about 100 people are running the

missing san francisco teacher. crews spent all day looking for ed cavanaugh. they're expected to be out this morning in eldorado county. he was last seen friday, july 17th. he was reportedly riding his dirt bike with a friend in eldorado national forest. that's when he split from his friend and decided to continue himself. he worked at downtown high school where he taught students wilderness skills. friends describe the 46-year-old as an avid outdoorsman. >> hoping for a miracle. i am. because i know that ed has all of the skills to survive in the wilderness. >> friends say cavanaugh has diabetes and they're concerned about whether he has the medication he needs. a wildfire burning in nevada county is forcing dozens of people from their homes. the lowell fire started at 2:30 yesterday afternoon and quickly burned through 4,000 acres. crews are having a hard time breaching the fire because of the steep terrain.

the fire is about 45 minutes southeast of sacramento. several neighborhoods in nevada had to be evacuated. investigators are looking for a jeep wrangler that was seen in the area about the same time the fire started. meanwhile, those evacuated because of a fire near lake berryessa has been contained. firefighters caught a break when winds backed off. it allowed them to gain more ground. in ten minutes, how new technology from a bay area university is helping the firefight. new details this morning on a deadly shooting in the east bay that stunned neighbors. san leandro police are asking for help catching the person that shot and killed a driver. this happened yesterday about 1:00 a.m. on northbound 880 near marina boulevard. chp officers were investigating

an unrelated multi car crash yards away, but the sound of gunshots led them to discover the body of a man, they haven't released the victim's name. >> it is scary, it didn't used to be like that. it was more quiet. lately it has been happening, seems like the violence is getting closer and closer to the area. >> if you pass the scene yesterday, 880 near marina boulevard around 1:00 a.m., you're asked to call the san leandro police with any information. no arrests have been made. new this morning, be aware of a possible sex offender in san rafael. police are investigating a sexual assault near dominican and alden avenue. officers say the victim wasn't a student or employee at the university. they have not arrested anyone. thousands are expected to attend the funeral for a hayward police officer that died in the

line of duty. scott lunger was shot and killed in a traffic stop early wednesday morning, the father of two served with hayward police department for 15 years. mark estrada is accused of firing shots that killed him. the funeral has been moved to oracle arena to accommodate the number of mourners. here's a live look at the stadium where the funeral will be held thursday at 10:00 a.m. viewing is at chapel of the chimes wednesday night. a unique tribute to another police officer on the anniversary of his death, for the first time in police department history, leaders renamed a street in honor of a fallen officer. a portion of hay street will be known as dan niemi way. he was shot while investigating a neighborhood disturbance. those remembering him say the tribute is a testament to the sacrifice he made for the

including small children. the accident happened at the beach ben park in bowling green, kentucky. no one is in critical condition because of the ride's malfunction, it is under investigation. frightening moments for tourists in las vegas this weekend, flames burned at the top of a popular hotel, sending large plumes of smoke high above the strip. a fire broke out at the cosmopolitan hotel yesterday afternoon. tourists at nearby resorts captured palm trees and cabanas on fire. one person went to the hospital. it is not clear how the fire started. investigators say it may have been ignited by a cigarette thrown down from a higher floor. still to come. academics and technology are coming together to fight fires. we will show you which local

cam pell city officials say the cost is too much. they're reporting the south bay city made the decision thursday. city leaders worry hosting a multi day fan event would be large financial undertaking for the city. instead campbell will host a smaller event. the super bowl event could have brought more than 100,000 to the city. it is an active weekend for hundreds of firefighters battling the rag fire. we told you earlier, the blaze is 55% contained. fire crews getting support from an unlikely source, a bay area university. scott budman has more about it. >> reporter: while crews battle the fire, chris uses technology to help the crew. chris is a graduate student at san jose state department of

decades across the united states. over the last two days, more than 120 new fires popped up across the country. and warm, dry weather and drought in california, the fire danger is very high for the rest of the summer. anthony slaughter joins us now with a look at the forecast. you were talking about the winds picking up and temperatures spiking later this week. unfortunately it is not good news. we could use the rain like we had last week, a few areas saw showers. the next week ahead will get hot and the wind will start to pick up. and that's the key component when it comes to the fires. you have winds, it goes all over the place. that will be with us through the remainder of the upcoming week. hot temperatures. get ready, bay area. it is about to feel hot across the bay. if you don't have air conditioning, want to make plans now. we are talking about a few days of triple digits and 90 degree heat, even for san francisco,

talking 80s there. san jose is looking at sunshine now after low clouds cleared out. across the rest of the bay area, dealing with cloud cover from the north bay into san francisco. east bay, oakland hills clouded over. the peninsula seeing sunshine, and that's the general trend heading through the day. sunshine comes back. 83 degrees in the south bay. east bay at 73. san francisco up to 68 degrees. couple degrees cooler from yesterday. 85 for north bay. hot spot without a doubt, 84 degrees for the tri-valley. another warm day, especially if you make plans to head to gilroy garlic festival. 86 degrees expected there. it will be toasty with lots of garlic. the other thing, the berkeley kite festival. 74 degrees expected for your high there. it will be a great day to fly a kite. winds start to pick up as i was telling vicky. i want to show you the wind future cast. winds this morning are light. as we head through the day,

watch half moon bay, watch how the winds gust up, 15 to 20 miles per hour. especially tomorrow morning. winds begin to shift offshore. that's going to drive the warming trend this upcoming week. that will mean dangerous fire conditions moving toward the next couple days. today will be kind of nice. we will talk about sunshine, 70s and 80s most of the day. notice as we move into the next couple days, look how the 80s move from inland valleys to the coastline. 90s for most of the bay by wednesday. we're talking inner valleys and tri-valley could see temperatures as hot as 103 for places like livermore, pleasanton, antioch, brentwood, places like that may get up to 110 by wednesday. it will be a scorcher of a day by wednesday. tuesday and wednesday the hottest days this upcoming week. show you that trend now. san jose, 83 degrees today. 86 tomorrow. by tuesday, we jump into the 90s for san jose. by tuesday, east bay valley

killer whales hunting on canada's west coast. during the hunt, the young whale found herself stuck on the rocks at the time tide went out. luckily, a nearby whale research team spotted the animal, radioed for help. they worked with whatever they had on hand to keep the orca wet and cool. >> at first you could see her breathing was getting faster. after a little while, she knew we were there to help her. >> that's amazing. they had to wait for mother nature to help out. they stayed with the whale for 8 hours until the tide came in, lifting the whale, allowing her to join her family which was waiting nearby. coming up, a different type of football takes over levi stadium. and the battle of the bay continues at at&t park. madison bumgarner had plenty to say about the game. highlights are next. golden gate bridge (adlib)

kmejts from senator mccain not being a pow to the feud with graham and the cell phone number, taking on hillary clinton. it is comments on undocumented immigrants that may have upset residents in california. give us what's happening nationally and versus what's happening here. >> everywhere, but yes, emphasis on california. first picture first. nationally remarks by trum caused an uproar, particularly in the republican party. most leaders in the party condemning trump's portrayal of undocumented latino immigrants. this comes with an awareness that every month, it is a startling figure, every month 50,000 latino citizens become 18 years of age and therefore eligible to vote. that's 2.4 million new latino

voters between 2014 and 2015 presidential election. but in california, trump's remarks have brought pain to republican leaders. why? because for the past few years, republican leadership here, they worked hard to embrace minorities, including latinos. needless to say, for many latinos, trump's remarks are an ugly wakeup call no matter where you are. >> we know the population here has grown significantly in size. talk about growth and significance of the latino vote in california. >> it is massive. take a look at the breakdown we have. breakdown between the state's population and voters. you can see that while whites are about 39% of the population, they still comprise 62% of the state's voters. with 39%, just a little more of the population, latinos are only 17% of state voters. guess what. that differential is shrinking

all the time. in 1990, 25 years ago, a generation, whites made up 79% of california voters, latinos only 10% of the state's elected. asian american, african-american voters, both percentages roughly equal to the population. but the potential growth area, it is amazing, seismic, comes with the latino vote. >> clear the demographic shifts are producing changes in voters. forecast what that means for us in 2016 with this new trend and voters becoming disproportionately minorities. >> it means a lot. look, these changes are likely significant throughout the nation, but in california, yeah, big things coming. in this state alone, there are five republican held latino congressional districts where latinos have 40% or more population. those populations are growing. one of them is nearby.

10th congressional district south and east of bay area. when you have 40% plus, watch out. incumbents have to consider what's happening, they're under tremendous pressure. if a major latino voter registration drive occurs, they could be next to go. for the moment, trump immigration accusations, what have they done, put republicans here and elsewhere on a defensive note that don't want to be on the defensive posture. would rather be attacking records of the democrats and that's something they're going to need to do if they hope to hold congress and more importantly win the presidency in 2016. the growing latino vote is what some may call the 800 pound gorilla in the room. it is growing so much. republicans so far haven't mastered it, especially with remarks like those given by trump. >> i have a feeling they're going to keep coming. larry gerston, pleasure to have

68 for san francisco, 83 for south bay. 73 for the east bay. nice and comfortable there. even the peninsula at 78. tri-valley, one of the hot spots with temperatures reaching back into the mid-80s. in the next couple days, you're going to notice one of two things, the heat, but first you'll notice the wind. wind will start to pick up tonight through tomorrow. that's going to be the key component in changing the weather forecast. it will start to gust. that also means fire danger, starting to increase. this is 5:00 this evening. notice winds out of the northwest 15 to 20 miles per hour at the coast. very calm in spots. only 5 to 15 from half moon bay to redwood city. as we move through the overnight hours through the day tomorrow, that's when winds will start to rev up. half moon bay, gusts up to 20 miles per hour tomorrow morning. then tomorrow afternoon, winds start to subside. that's going to leave us with an offshore wind, starts to heat us up toward tuesday and wednesday. that makes for temperatures in the 90s and triple digits.

all because of high pressure across parts of the four corners. that starts to move this way. that heat will surge in as soon as tomorrow. tomorrow it will still be comfortable at the coastline. san francisco, half moon bay, looking at 60s. 70s for inner bay and most of the north bay and toward the peninsula. 80s move in. look at the 80s moving toward tuesday and wednesday. they come from inland valleys to the coastline. it will start to heat up for the coast. not going to be overly warm. still a few 70s, but 90s for inner bay toward san jose and triple digit heat for places like morgan hill, tri-valley, antioch, dublin toward brentwood, could be looking at temperatures near 110 by wednesday. get ready, it will be hot as we head the next couple days. 83 today for san jose. 86 for east bay valley. tomorrow in the 90s. tuesday, in the triple digits for places like east bay valleys and same deal for wednesday. cool and comfortable in san
