as we go through this week. i will show you just how hot it gets and what you can expect coming up in the microclimate forecast. and a pretty standard view of the bay bridge toll plaza but the upper east shore freeway we have a couple of issues now on the approach. don't let that get you caught napping. i will sort that out coming up. >> announcer: interest from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." a good monday morning. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we do begin with a developing story, a desperate search is underway for a missing eight-year-old girl out of santa cruz. she vanished from her apartment complex yesterday and now authorities are doing whatever they can to try to find her. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuang joining us live from our is service newsroom. she was last seen at 4:00 yesterday afternoon. what do we know so far? >> reporter: that makes it 13 hours now almost that she has been missing. she was last seen riding her white razor scooter. she is just eight years old.

this was around her apartment complex at 1030 river street. take a look at her picture, eight-year-old madison middleton last seen playing along the san lorenzo river, she was wearing a purple thee high dress, black legsings, a helmet and long dark hair pulled it to the side in a braid. madison also known as maddie is 4 feet tall and weighs 48 pounds. let's take a live picture of the search center that's been set up by sanity cruz police. we are standing by waiting there for them to give us the latest. you can see some movement, but they have not spoken with media just yet. this is next to madison's apartment complex along highway 9 by the tannery arts center. sanity cruz police have called in more officers and detectives, also getting help from the sheriff's office search and rescue team as well as a personally trained search and rescue k-9 unit from the state office of emergency services. once again, this is madison middleton. police are asking anyone to report any sightings of her. they say that even if you are

not sure, really anything at this point, any information can be critical in helping to located her. we are entering the 13th hour that she has been missing. you just saw the live shot at the command post the police have set up. we will bring you the latest as soon as they give us the updates. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." at 5:02. happening right now injured on the front line, a wildfire battle in nevada county sent four firefighters to the hospital. the lowell fire is threatening 2,000 homes north of interstate 80. this morning there are mandatory evacuations in place. we've learned of the four firefighters injured, three are expected to be treated and released in the next several hours. >> we do have four firefighters that suffered some burn injuries that were transported to uc davis. right now the exact incident still under investigation to determine what exactly happened, why the firefighters were on the

line. >> this morning 800 firefighters are on the front lines with more on the way. that fire is 15% contained as we mentioned and firefighters are cautiously optimistic hoping that the winds stay in their favor today. as firefighters continue to battle those flames, hot conditions are heightening fire danger here in the bay area. want to check in with meteorologist kari hall with what we can expect this week in terms of temperatures. >> and it will be hot out there and the wind shift will make it harder for crews to try to get those wildfires under control. now we have a wind coming this this from the southeast at 6 miles an hour, but then as we go into the day the winds will turn more of a northwesterly wind at 15 to 20 miles an hour. so when we see the winds shift like that it could turn the fire back on itself and start to affect other areas that have not been affected by those wildfires. hot weather also ahead. so as the crews get out there and are battling those hot flames, the temperatures will be going up, too, as we go through

the week. the highs will be topping out in the 90s even close to 100 degrees am some of those areas. so we will keep you up-to-date on that and of course it make those conditions unfavorable into the next couple of days. i will talk more with about that and what the bay area can expect. it's coming up in just a few minutes. >> thank you very much. search dogs joining the effort this morning to find a san francisco teacher who disappeared in elle national forest. ed cavanaugh hasn't been seen since last friday. he was dirt biking with a friend but decided to continue on on his own. police volunteers are searching areas in the georgetown divide between mosquito and garden valley. cav mau worked at downtown high school where he taught his students wilderness skills. friends and family described the 46-year-old as an avid outdoorsman. they're hoping his survival skills will help keep him alive but also say cavanaugh is

diabetic and they are unsure if he has the medication he needs. at 5:04. vallejo police say a driver is dead, this after apparently being shot and then crashing his car. 911 calls came in around 9:00 last night about shots fired near the area of oak wood and red wood parkway. minutes later more calls about a car crash. the driver of a black acura lost control and hit three other parked cars. firefighters this to use the jaws of life to get the man out of the car, but he still died at the seen. investigators believe a gunshot wound and not the crash likely killed him. a suspected car jacker recovering after police shot him near san francisco international airport. investigators say about 7:00 sunday morning they found a stolen car crashed into a pole near san bruno avenue. when officers found the suspect they say he took off, then tried to car jack other cars. police say the suspect eventually turned on an officer. witnesses say the suspect told police to shoot him.

>> the first shot was heard by an officer and by the driver of the vehicle that -- the independent witness. that appears to have gone into the ground and then the second round as the suspect advances on the officer -- >> the suspect is in am serious condition, the officer was not hurt. support and sympathy on full display. thousands of people expected to attend the funeral for a hayward police officer killed last week in the line of duty. sergeant shot lunger was killed early wednesday morning, he was a father of two who served with the hayward police department for 15 years. lunger's funeral will be held thursday at 10:00 in the morning. his family moved the service to oracle arena to accommodate the large crowds. mark estrada remains in police custody and they continue to look for this this four-door sedan near estrada's east

oakland home after the shooting. at 5:06 happening today, big changes coming to palo alto train tracks and residents will get a chance to hear what's in store. in an effort to boost safety cal train and the city will try to further limit access to the cal train corridor. it comes it if response to a high rate of suicides, especially pong teenagers. the new project includes cameras and higher fencing. crews will do the work next month but tonight are holding a community meeting to discuss the plans. despite seemingly mounting opposition, a new waterfront arena for the golden state warriors still moving forward. today marks the last day to submit public comments to the san francisco planning department. the warriors are hoping to build a state of the art arena right in san francisco's mission bay on the water. critic worry the arena will bring in too much traffic to the area, especially for the nearby hospital, ucsf. overall support for that plan still very high, but the team did eventually push the

timetable back and now expects to have a new facility by the start of the 2018 season. happening today, san mateo city leaders will discuss a new ban further limiting what and where to light up. city council hopes to follow other san mateo county cities by including a new ban on e-cigarettes. it would also extend the ban to multi-unit dwellings along with parks and service areas like atms and bus stops. a serious water warning this loss al toss this morning. cal water says the traces of e.coli have been found in the water in the south el monte area of loss all toss. no one should drink water straight out of the top. they are urging beam "people" to boil the water for at least one minute. officials are keeping a close eye on the contamination and going to let residents know when the water is safe to drink again. so far that problem is limited to that area. want to get a check of the forecast with meteorologist kari

hall. >> no water in the forecast in the form of rain across the bay area. that's really unfortunate because it will be a sizzling week, especially as we head into wednesday and thursday. right now look at these temperatures, so nice and comfortable, it's 64 degrees in the north bay, san francisco 57 degrees and also in the lower 60s elsewhere across the bay. here is a look the at those highs this afternoon in the south bay 92 degrees, 82 in the east bay, peninsula 84 degrees and the tri-valley today 93. san francisco 76 and in the north bay 92 degrees. it continues to go up from here as we go into the next couple of days with the heat peaking on wednesday. i will talk more about that, what to expect, that's coming up in a few minutes. receipts see how the roads are flowing with mike. we have a look at the east shore freeway, this is westbound 80 underneath that silhouette of university avenue coming off of the merge you see those roads

>> announcer: you're watching "today in the bay." welcome back at 5:13. a live look outside of a still darkened sky over san jose. oh, boy, is that heat coming. we will be checking in with kari momentarily. san francisco muni station is back open this morning. a suspicious briefcase found on the platform shut it down for two hours yesterday. authorities found the briefcase around 8:00 last night at the church street station. they safely evacuated that

station and removed the briefcase. no word on what was actually in it. so imagine zipping through airport security with a simple touch of a finger or scan of your eyeballs. it's reportedly already happening in the bay area. mercury news reports alaska airls is doing a first of its kind pilot program at the airport. some 200 regular flyers are taking part. in most cases it involves putting your finger to a screen and you are through. bio metrics is expected to become far more common at airports in the coming years. this next story opened one company's eyes for sure, the nation's vehicle safety agency slapping fee wrat with a record $100 million fine. it's the culmination of a federal investigation into fiat's handling of 23 recalls involving 11 million cars. in those cases federal officials say that fiat was slow to produce replacement parts, gave misinformation to owners about recalls and made repairs that

failed to if i can the defects. california lottery bringing this big bucks it posted more than $5 a.5 billion this total sales last fiscal year, that is the highest sales total in state history, 10% more than the previous year's record. all that money is expected to generate $1.3 billion for schools. california lottery says scratchers drove last year's sales growth. another thing that could be raising money, san francisco square has filed for its first iflt po. >> scott mcgrew for investors looking for detail a lot still up in the air? >> a lot. square filed its paperwork, it's i po paperwork under that if you jump start our business startups act that president obama signed last year. it allows smaller businesses like square to file secretly. square filed for an ipo at all is not entirely certain but the wall street journal quotes insiders at the company says yes the ipo is real.

america eat san mateo according to data from the business intelligence company euro monitor it's more than all of the asia pacific combined. americans will consume nearly 18% of the world's chocolate. that's about $18 billion worth, but still switzerland eats the most chocolate in the world. if you buy a chocolate bar today you better eat it quickly because it's going to melt and then you will have chocolate all over your fingers and nobody wants that. >> and nobody wants the hot weather, you know, the sweating and just feeling uncomfortable throughout the afternoon. that's the kind of weather you can expect for the next few days unfortunately the ac up on full blast for the next few days. let's take a live look outside right now. in san jose you see that we have a very nice cool start to the day as you head out it is feeling very nice. the humidity still nice and low, mostly clear skies. look at these temperatures, it's 59 degrees in san jose, in

concord 62 and napa 53 degrees while santa rosa checks in at 64 degrees. our winds are starting to shift at 7:00 in the morning you can tell by their wind arrows the wind is coming in more from a northerly direction, northwesterly wind throughout the day and it starts out light but picks up this afternoon and gets a little breezy in spots like half-moon bay along the coast the winds picking up to about 20, 25 miles an hour. so the breezy dry conditions will stay with us through the rest of the week. here is the hour by hour forecast in san francisco. at lunchtime it's 73 degrees, nice and comfortable, you will appreciate that warmth today but not so much the next couple of days. as the winds continue to come in we will bring in warmer air and high pressure building overhead. now, when we have high pressure it causes the sinking air clear skies and also allows for some of that hot weather from the central valley to move into parts of the bay area. we will see that heat peaking on

wednesday, up to 98 degrees in san jose, but the tri-valley reaching 103 degrees when the average temperature is just 88 degrees. let's go ahead and look toward the weekend. it does start to come back down, still warm, but not as hot as the middle of the week. let's see how traffic is moving we are looking -- you can visibly see that movement westbound 580, but good spacing. dublin coming in out of livermore and toward the dublin interchange, this is your commute direction and you see the build for 84 as well. no surprises for the tri-valley or rest of the bay. the earlier incidents with the sofa and mattress all cleared from the roadway. giants play tonight keep that in mind. the only thing here one incident san thomas ex were press way, someone trying to fix a it dead battery there. unlike any other flower you have ever seen and certainly any one that you have smelled. we are talking about the corpse

every home in america within ten years. many of those probably right out here in the bay area. many didn't believe it at first but there is video proof. a lion still on the loose in milwaukee. >> officers armed with guns shut down streets to hunt for the wild animal over the weekend. people reported seeing what looked like a lion and her cub if this a park. this is now the second citing. the animal was first spotted last week by a woman who took this cell phone video of that cat roaming the treats. someone was to worried they accidentally so the a dog in the paw mistaking it for the lion. the milwaukee zoo says they are not sure what is running around the city but all of their lions are safe and accounted for. speaking of close encounters, an ohio man being charged with trespassing after posting a have i of himself petting this cougar. he reportedly reached through the fence and stroked the cat behind the ears. the video was posted on youtube

this weekend helped fire crews battling a massive wild tire near lake berryessa. massive progress from last week. that nearly 7,000 acre wragg fire is 60% contained. firefighters expected it to be fully under control by tomorrow and all road closures and evacuation orders have been lifted. the fire was initially thought to have started by a vehicle crash, but that official cause still under investigation. firefighters in lake county have gained the upper hand in a destructive brush fire there. the dam fire broke out around 5:00 last night in the town of clear lake just north of santa rosa. this morning the flames are out but firefighters keeping an eye on hot spots. two homes were destroyed and an apartment building damaged in that eight acre fire. 100 people were evacuated all are back this their homes safely right now but not everyone who was told to leave did so. one man said he stayed behind to keep an eye on his house and he watched as those fire flames came dangerously close. >> the trees all the way over to

findings from an independent evaluation of the teen. shultz is friends with the almgrens and was sleeping over at their house the night of the stabbing. the teen has pleaded not guilty. san jose police are looking for the gunman in a deadly shooting. this happened saturday night in east san jose close to the 680/101 interchange. officers say the victim was talking with people in the driveway of a home when a car pulled up and the passenger jumped out and opened fire. the gunman then jumped back into the car and the driver sped off. sources tell us the victim only 19 years old. now to a story only on nbc. a newark family has a big clean up job ahead after returning home to discover that the house was trashed in a break in. what's unusual is nothing was actually stolen but nearly every item in the house was destroyed. leather coaches slashed, plates shattered and motor oil and bleach poured throughout the house.

even the clothing and toys destroyed. >> just complete shock. i have never seen a house in this type of condition ever. it's -- you can't even walk in here. you can smell the odor of the oil and it smells also like bleach is mixed in. there's glass everywhere. >> what were the intentions? a relative of the family tells us she suspects it might have been a hate crime against the eastern indian family of six that lives in that house. newark police on the other hand say they don't consider it a hate crime but they are investigating the break in. some closure for a child abuse victim who broke free from the shackles in a case that drew national attention. sacramento county has agreed to pay 4 million dollars to the inside if i had victim and sued child protective services. back in 2008 he used a trampoline to jump over a fence in tracie and who believe to a nearby gym where workers called 911. he later told a gir his captors shackled him and beat him with a

baseball bat. four adults were convicted in that case. now to a serious water warping for los altos residents. cal water says that traces of e.coli have been found in the water in the out el monte area of los altos. no one should drink tap water, instead cal water is urging people to boil that water for at least a minute before they use it to cook or drink. officials are keeping a close eye on the contamination and they are going to let residents know and we will tell you when the water is safe again. so far the problem is limited to the south el monte area. you are certainly going to feed to hydrate if you are in the bay area the next couple of days, going to be a hot one inland. >> not just today either this is a trend that we're watching. meteorologist kari hall joins us with more. >> it does start today and continues to go up with the heat peaking as we head into the middle of the week. we start out with mostly clear skies and a cool morning and it does quickly warm up as we go through at least midmorning early afternoon. we will still be breezy, especially along the coast and

as we head into the middle of the week, let's say wednesday, that's when we will have our hottest weather and then it starts to come back down in time for the weekend. highs today reaching 92 degrees in saratoga. pacifica 75 degrees and also in san francisco with highs in the upper 70s. a high of 90 degrees in napa, oakland tops out at 82 degrees. some low to mid 90s in the tri-valley. livermore today reaching 95 degrees. the temperature trend going up, more on that coming up in less than ten minutes. let's check in now with mike for traffic. the bay bridge behind me, the stack up right now, the metering lights just getting turned on here. look at your map, we haven't changed much of the colors from green over toward yellow just yet. just starting to see a build at the toll plaza. the rest of the bay no real surprises except for fremont southbound 680 jams up from auto mall parkway down toward mission south.

daughter. >> bobbi kristina brown underwent treatment at two atlanta hospitals and a rehabilitation facility, but never regained consciousness. a hi rick decision expected later today by the boy scouts of america, the group could begin allowing gay leaders into its ranks. the group's executive board is considering a resolution seeking to overturn its long standing blanket ban on gay adult leaders. they are voting today. if approved that rule would still allow religious chartered boy scouts units to choose leaders whose beliefs are consistent with their own. two years ago the boy scouts council voted to allow gay youth to be members but not a kults. we could learn more about upgrades coming to u.s. airports. joe biden expected to make an announcement about the changes. newsweek reports this comes nine months after they announced proposals to upgrade the city's airports, especially new york city's airports.

5:45. happening today, big changes coming to palo alto train tracks. tonight residents are going to have the chance to hear what's in store. in an effort to boost safety the city and cal train will try to further limit access to the cal train corridor. it comes in response to the high rate of suicides, especially among teenagers. the project includes new cameras and higher fencing. crews are expected to do that work next mob, but tonight city and school officials will host a community meeting to discuss its plan. despite seeming mounting opposition a new waterfront arena for the golden state warriors is still moving forward. today is the last day to submit public comments. the warriors hope to build a state of the art arena in san francisco's mission bay. critics worry the arena will bring too much traffic to the area especially for a nearby hospital. overall support for the plan still high, but the team did recently push the timetable back and now expect to have a new facility by the start of the
