santa cruz for the missing eight-year-old. and four firefighters burned while battling a fire near lack tahoe. their conditions this morning. plus a bay area community told to boil their water before they use it. where cal water found races of e.coli. >> announcer: from nbc bay area this is "today in the bay." a very good monday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. we start with a developing store and a desperate search underway right now for a missing eight-year-old girl out of santa cruz. she vanished from her apartment complex yesterday and now authorities are doing whatever they can to try to find her. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuang live in our san francisco newsroom with what we know so far. >> reporter: i mean this is hour 14 now and these are rhetorical hours in the very beginning. it was nice outside yesterday, you have an eight-year-old girl playing this her apartment complex riding her scooting and just vanishes in the afternoon. take a look at her picture. this is eight-year-old madison

middleton, also known as maddie. she is 4 feet tall, 48 pounds last seen at 1030 river treat riding a scooter. she was wearing a purple knee-high dress, black leggings helmet and long brown hair pulled aside in a braid. >> this is the command post that they've set up the police have set up. we are waiting for an update from them. this is near madison's affordable housing complex, apartment complex, the tannery along highway 1 and highway 9 next to the san lorenzo river. this is where police have focused their search extensively looking around the neighboring wood land areas and river. you've got sheriff's office and the state emergency services with highly trained search and rescue units helping to scour the areas nearby. police say it is critical that if you may have seen her, you think you may have seen her, just to go ahead and call them because any little bit of

information can really be very crucial at this stage. laura and sam, you saw that live shot, we are still waiting for an update from police. we are understanding that a public information officer may be on her way. of course, we will bring you the latest when we can. police are gathering all of their resources. one of four firefighters who was injured in a wildfire in nevada county still in the hospital this morning. three other firefighters were scheduled to be released overnight. all four sustained burns while battling the lowell fire just north of interstate 80. this morning there are still mandatory evacuations in place there and so far that fire has charred about 1500 acres. it's not clear exactly how those firefighters got hurt. >> we do have four firefighters that suffered some burn injuries that were transported to uc toews. right now the exact incident is still under investigation to determine what exactly happened why the firefighters were on the line. >> this morning 800 firefighters are on the front lines with more

on the way. the fire is 15% contained and firefighters are cautiously on pi i can opening that the winds stay in their favor today. the fire fight could get tougher as temperatures soar this week. meteorologist kari hall, it's going to get pretty hot. >> it will. and the weather conditions have been favorable the last couple of days for them to try to get that wildfire under control but now we are getting ready for a shift in the wind, coming from the south to the east at 6 miles an hour but into the afternoon the winds will gust from the northwest at 15 to 20 miles an hour and the temperature now at 58 degrees and the humidity at 59%. when the wind shifts that may turn the fire in a different direction and also with those temperatures going up that may cause another issue. humidity this afternoon will be at 15% and overnight back up to about 45% with temperatures today in the mid 80s. by the middle of the week it could be climbing to near 100 degrees in that area. so is that will make conditions very difficult. i will let you know what the

rest of the bay area can expect as far as the microclimate forecast. that's coming up in about four minutes. in the meantime cooler weather this weekend actually helped fire crews battling a fire near lake berryessa. the nearly 7,000 acre wragg fire is now 60% contained. firefighters expect it to be fully under control by tomorrow. all road closures and evacuation orders have been lifted. the fire was initially thought to have been started by a vehicle crash but the official cause is still under investigation. we are staying on top of the wildfires that have been burning all summer long. for the latest updates head to nbcbayarea.com or you can download our free mobile app. we are also on facebook and twitter. a suspected car jacker is recovering this morning after police shot him near san francisco international airport. investigators say around 7:00 sunday morning they found a stolen car crashed into a pole. when officers found the suspect

they say he took off and then tried to car jack other cars. police say the suspect eventually turned on an officer. witnesses say the suspect told police to shoot him. >> the first shot is heard by an officer and by the driver of the vehicle that the independent witness, that appears to have gone into the ground and then the second round as the suspect advances on the officer -- >> the suspect is in serious condition, the officer was not hurt. thousands of people are expected to attend the funeral for hayward police officer killed last week this in the line of duty. sergeant scott lunger was shot and killed during a traffic stop early wednesday morning. he was the pear of two who served with the hayward police department for 15 years. lunger's funeral will be held thursday at 10:00 in the morning. his family has moved the service to oracle arena to accommodate the large crowds expected to attend. the accused shooter mark estrada

remains in police custody and investigators continue to look for this this four-door is sed tan near estrada's east oakland home shortly after that shooting. police hope someone can tell them more information about the driver. if you live in los altos you should be warned you may need to boil your water before you drink it. cal water says traces of e.coli have been found in the water of south el monte of los altos. cal water is urging people to boil water for at least a minute before using it to cook or drink. officials are keeping a close eye on the cot facial and will let residents know when that water is safe again. so far the problem is limited to the south el monte area. happening today san mateo city leaders planning on discussing a new ban to further limit what and where you can light up. city council hopes to follow other san mateo county cities by including a new ban on e-cigarettes. it would also extend the ban to multi-unit dwellings along with

parks and service areas. no action is expected to be taken before next month. the fight over san francisco's new legislation on soda is heating up. the american beverage association has sued the city of san francisco according to the san francisco chronicle. the beverage association claims the legislation requiring health warning labels on sugary beverages an bang soda ads on city property violates the first amendment. the san francisco board of supervisors unanimously approved the sewed at that ordinance last month. all new at 6:00 an unusual response reportedly planned to the where had of a police crack down on bicyclists in san francisco. the examiner reporting that cyclists are upset about a plan to get tough on running stop signs and red lights. on wednesday opponents will take to the streets with a stop in. they will ride san francisco's wiggle route from market street to golden gate park obeying every stop sign along the way single file.

they call the law misguided. it's time to check that microclimate forecast for our monday morning. let's take a peek outside. can you make it out through the haze? that's a look at the eastern span of the bay bridge this morning. things are going to warm up inland. want to check the forecast now. >> and a hot hazy day ahead. it gets hotter heading through the week. today probably the mildest day at least to start. look at these temperatures now in the upper 50s to lower 60s as the is sunrise rising and you can see the clear skies and we get a look at that clear video from san francisco. today's high will be 76 degrees. in the city north bay 92 degrees, 82 degrees in the east bay. let's check out the tri-valley today, 93 degrees. the mid 80s in the peninsula and 94 degrees -- 92 rather in the south bay. so starting to get hot today and even hotter for wednesday. i will show you the whole microclimate forecast which you may not want to see, especially this early on a monday morning,

fremont 880 starts the build, starts to low heading from the truck scales to the mission. your jack 680 approaching mission your earlier crash now on the shoulder. 6:12. happening today, big changes coming to palo alto train tracks and residents get a chance to hear what's in store. in an effort to boost safety cal train and the city will try to further limit access to the cal train corridor. it comes in response to a high rate of suicides especially among teenagerers. it includes cameras and higher fencing. crews will do the work next month. the nation's vehicle safety agency slapping fiat with a record $100 million fine. this culmination of a federal investigation into fiat's handling of 23 recalls involving 11 million cars. in those cases federal officials say fiat was slow to pro he do you say replacement parts and gave misinformation to owners about recalls and made repairs that failed to fix the defects.

today we could learn more about upgrades coming to u.s. airport. vice president joe biden and new york's governor expected to make an announcement about the changes. they report this comes nine months after they announced proposals to upgrade the city's airports especially new york city airports. in february biden said laguardia airport felt like quote, a it belonged in some third world country. another bay area company going public maybe. san francisco swear has filed for its ipo. >> scott mcgrew for investors looking for detail a lot still up in the air. >> it's one of those tunnel secret filings. that square filed for an ipo at all is not completely certain but they say yes the ipo is real. the journal says square filed it's ipo paperwork under that new jump start our business startups act that president obama signed last year it allows small businesses to file

secretly. now, normally when companies file for an ipo they file in public, something called an s1 we can look through it and pull out interesting detail. it doesn't remain secret forever. we will get a chance to look at the books shortly before the stock goes on sale. a secret ipo just let's them file and then if they decide to cancel that ipo without giving away any of their secrets. the founder and ceo of square is also the founder and interim ceo of twitter. he came back to twitter temporarily early this among as dick cost low stepped down. dorsey runs both of these companies but he is going to have to choose one of these. he really has to choose square. square can't filed for an ipo and then swap ceo's midstream. that means we are going to hear about a new twitter ceo very soon. chinese stock markets crumpled overnight.

a fourth said they tried e-cigarettes and almost 10% are current users. that's nearly double the number of teens who smoke traditional cigarettes. experts say more research is needed to determine if these cigarettes are a gateway to is cigarette use. a new report finding that car owners are paying billions of dollars in repair bills due to the nation's rough roads and the worst ride right here in the bay area. a new report by the transportation research group trip finds more than a quarter of the nation's major urban roads are in bad shape. and the cost of repairing the resulting broken axles and blown tires and battered shock absorbers is costing the average driver $516 a year. the worst conditions in the country are in san francisco where 74% of the roads are damaged. so we are closing in on august rather quickly. if you feel like your hands to take a trip this summer has passed you by the travel city wants you to think about.

experts say airfare to pretty much anywhere is especially cheaper in august because most people took their vacations in this june and july. many hotels are trying to fill up their rooms as well causing them to drop their rates. hitting the road will be a little easier on your wallet too. >> gas prices on average 89 cents cheaper this summer than last summer. >> a survey found the best bargain destination this summer sunny las vegas. >> pack up the family. >> rather hot. >> it is. it is here too. one hotel in vegas is mostly back open for business following a massive fire on the roof. check out that video. guests captured video of large flames and billowing black smoke as fire burned palm trees on top of the cosmopolitan hotel. two people suffered smoke inhalation. hotel rooms on the 14th floor were damaged and remain closed. investigators think that that fire started in unone of the palm trees and took off.

it's time to check that microclimate forecast. you are going to need somewhere tool if you are inland at all across the bay area. here is a live look from unat san bruno mountain this morning. >> find your friend with the pool and get there today, tomorrow wednesday -- how many days are we watching? >> at least through thursday. even if you are in san francisco it will be pretty warm. you want to find that friend with the air conditioning if you don't have it. we take a live look at san jose. we are starting with hazy conditions and temperatures are still thighs and cool but come over and check out this seven-day forecast it's coming up now at the bottom of the screen. you will see just how hot it will get this week with wednesday the hottest day and then it starts to come back down on thursday but then the humidity coming this by friday. so mostly clear morning and also cool but quickly warming as we go through the day. by late morning early afternoon you will start to feel that heat going up with a breezy wind

coming out of the northwest. once again that heat peaking on wednesday. now our temperatures are around 60 degrees all across the bay, but 51 degrees now in napa. wind speeds not really coming in that strong and we won't have the nice on-shore flow bringing in that ocean breeze. in fact, with the wind coming in from the north it will make those temperatures very hot. we don't feel the winds kicking up until later on today, maybe 7:00 or 8:00 we have an on-shore flow and by then temperatures will be hot already peaking at 95 degrees in gilroy today, burlingame 79 degrees and 78 degrees on the embarcadero. napa 90 degrees, oakland 82 and danville today reaching 94 degrees. with a breezy northerly winsome of that heat coming in from high pressure building with that highest heat on wednesday also creating a fire danger and you just want to be careful with burning anything also with cigarettes, too, don't just flick them out the window. 84 degrees on wednesday in san

francisco and then feeling a little bit more comfortable just in time for the weekend. now let's check in with mike for a look at traffic. overall a nice monday easing into the workweek but fremont has this issues. we have the build southbound 880 toward mission. this is typical timing here but 680 counterpart down in toward the same area that is starting to recover a bit for those speeds the crash over on the shoulder right at south mission boulevard. a bad time. there's the building and more slower -- a slower drive out of sunol as more folks travel through the area. the bay bridge toll plaza and maze is looking really good the metering lights are on but no surprising. san jose the volume just starting to build for 101. still ahead on "today in the bay," streets shut down and officers with a rifles drawn. seems like something we would see in a s.w.a.t. standoff but these officers were looking for something that might not exist. and a reminder for giants

>> announcer: you're watching "today in the bay." if you are a runner hopefully you got a massage yesterday after the big marathon but there are a lot of sore legs in the bay area this morning. thousands still recovering from yesterday's 38th annual san francisco marathon. it was still dark out when the first wave of runners started. that race began at 5:30 yesterday morning. they weren't watching "today in the bay." top finishers this this a chance to qualify for a spot at the 2016 olympic team trials. the course started on the embarcadero and then headed west toward the golden gate bridge. runners then made their way through golden gate park and back toward the embarcadero. the top finishers were both from the bay area. chris macco of san francisco finished it in 2 hours 26 minutes and the top women's finisher was anna brede this.

of berkeley. congratulations to them. >> that is to impressive. california lottery bringing this pretty big bucks. it posted more than $5.5 billion in total sales last fiscal year, the highest sales total in state's history. 10% more than the previous year's record. all that money is expected to generate about $1.3 billion for schools. california lottery says scratchers drove last year's sales growth. earlier you mentioned the fact all these armed police officers are rifles. >> that's right. >> the armed officers shut down streets in milwaukee to hunt down a lion. maybe even two lions. >> you may recall we told you about people claiming they saw a lion roaming the streets of milwaukee. yesterday someone thought they saw a lion and cub in a park so officers shut down that area to search but didn't find anything. one woman took that video last week causing a lot of the hype you see it there.

this is more than me. this is a movement going on. people are tired of these incompetent politicians in washington that can't get anything done. >> reporter: in a pair of new nbc polls trump has a 7 point lead over bush in new hampshire. in iowa he is a couple of points behind wisconsin governor scott walker. other candidates are fighting for attention into i want to reach out to new people go places in republican has been going. >> but the nbc polls also show trump's unfavorable rating higher than any other candidate, a whopping 60% in iowa. hillary clinton's just a few points behind. later this morning clinton is talking climate change in iowa into i want more wind more solar, more advanced bio fuels, more energy efficiency. future generations will look back and wonder what were we thinking. >> reporter: in this new video she's promising half a billion solar panels by the end of her first term.

now, looking at her numbers she's strong in iowa a clear front runner there and also ahead of the polls in new hampshire, but not by as much. that gap is closing with senator bernie sanders who represents vermont, the state next door. those trump poll numbers fascinating. a historic decision expected today by the boy scouts of america. the group could begin allowing bay leaders into its ranks. the group's executive board considering a resolution seeking to overturn it's long sang blanket ban on gay adults. if it's approved the rule would still allowed religious chartered boy scout units to choose leaders whose beliefs are consistent with their own. two years ago the boy scouts council voted to allow gay youth to be leader but not adults. a san francisco muni station is back home in morning. a suspicious briefcase shut it down for two hours yesterday. authorities found the briefcase about 8:00 last night at the

church street station. they safely evaluated the station and removed the briefcase. no word what was in it. this morning search dogs joining the effort to find a san francisco teacher who disappeared in el dorado national forest. ed cavanaugh has not been seen since last friday. he decided to continue on his own. police and volunteers are searching area in the georgetown divide an area between the towns of mesquite to and garden valley. he worked at downtown high school where he taught his students wilderness skills. friends and family described the 46-year-old as an avid jouts doors man and are hoping to his survival skills will keep him alive alive, but also say he is diabetic and they are not sure that he has the medication he needs. time to check our microclimate forecast on this monday morning. let's take a peek outside from the east bay overlooking oakland. a little hazy start to our day, kari into it will be hazy into the afternoon. temperatures start to rise. nice and cool starting out the day as we are seeing tease

temperatures now in the upper 50s to lower 60s. this is where we're headed this afternoon in the south bay, a high of 92 degrees today, 84 in the peninsula and east bay at 82 degrees. in the tri-valley look for highs in lower 90s, san francisco 76 degrees and the north bay today reaching 92 degrees. here is a look at the trend adds we head into the tri-valley, look at livermore's forecast for the rest of the week. look at that, triple digit temperatures and the heat peaking on wednesday. tell take a look at more of the microclimates and what to expect as we head into the next of the weekend coming up in just a few minutes. we will start with the big view of the bay and hoe you the map. there are no real surprises although we are getting over one for fremont. here is the big view south bay just starting to show that build speeds going from orange out of the yellow area, over there the recovery for southbound 680 the earlier rash has moved to the shoulder and some cars are clearing right around the south

welcome back. taking a live peek outside overlooking fremont this morning. looks like folks are getting their monday morning going. the full ton county he coroner says an autopsy will be needed to determine what killed bobbi kristina brown, the daughter of singer kari hall whitney houston. her passing comes nearly six months after being found unconscious in a bathtub. they found her boyfriend performing cpr. according to family members

brown struggled to cope after her mother's sudden missing. the months that passed between the time she was pound and the time she tied will complicate things. the tragic similarity of events so close to the anniversary of whitney houston's death sparked questions. >> it is bizarre that the same type of incident would happen involving a mother and a daughter. >> bobbi kristina brown underwent treatment at two atlanta hospitals and rehabilitation facility but never regained consciousness. she was 22 years old. the pilot of a single engine plane died in a fiery crash in southern california. authorities say the unidentified pilot reported a loss of engine power yesterday just before going town about a half mile east of riverside municipal airport and within a few feet of homes. the aircraft caught fire after crashing. people immediately tried to put out the fire with garden hoses. no one was hurt on the ground. the pilot the only person on board. we will take all of the rain

we can get. new forecasts p indicate we may be in for more rain than normal in winter and higher flood risks. the latest long-term forecasting projects el nino conditions. in the event of flooding uc santa cruz skype tests have published a flood risk reduction report. that highlights coastal developments most am in danger of flooding and methods to reduce risk. a pesky drought related problem you can probably taste is vexing people along the delta. the problem is salty water pushing inland from the bay. it's worse than ever because there is not enough river water flowing in the other direction to keep the salt at bay. federal regulators recently granted a state request to temporarily weaken salt level standards. now environmentalists are challenging that decision. salt water can be disastrous if pumped into california farms. frantic and critical moments right now at 6:41. we are following a story a command post set up overnight as crews searching for a little eight-year-old girl missing in santa cruz. what we know next.

eight-year-old's apartment complex, taken down the crime scene tape and moved it a little downriver street. not sure why. it does seem there's less access for journalists. but take a look at the picture of eight-year-old madison middleton, she is 4 feet tall 48 pounds and also goes by maddie. she was last seen yesterday playing near her apartment complex the tannery that's at 1030 river street highway 9 by highway 1 riding a razor scooter, she had on a helmet purple thee high tress, black leggings, her hair pulled to the side in a braid. let's take a picture at the new command post. you can see the command post there and some officers that are just kind of standing around discussing. we are not sure when they are going to give us an update. it's moved from the apartment complex where you could see officers earlier. this area still in the same neighborhood around the san lorenzo river and also neighboring wood land areas.

talking with people in the driveway of a house when the car pulled out and passenger jumped out and opened fire. the gunman jumped back into the car and the driver took off. sources tell us the victim was only 19 years old armed officers shut down streets in milwaukee to hunt a lion maybe even two. >> imaginary or real that is the question. we told you about people claiming they saw a lion roaming the streets of milwaukee. yesterday someone thought they saw a lion and cub in a park. officials shut down the area to search it. they didn't come up with mig. the mystery continues. one woman took this video last week and it certainly sparked hype. a day later someone thought they spotted the big cat and shot it in the paw. that turned out to be a dog. the milwaukee zoo says all of its lions are present and accounted for. an ohio man is being charged with trespassing after posting a video of himself petting this cougar cougar. he reportedly reached through the fence, stroking the cat behind the ears at the zoo. the video was posted on youtube

last week. despite seeming to face mounting opposition a new waterfront arena for the golden state warriors still moving forward. today makes the last day to submit public comments to the san francisco planning department. the warriors hope to build a state of the art arena in san francisco's mission bay right on the water but critics worry that the arena will bring too much traffic to the area especially for the nearby hospital. overall support for that plan still very high but the team did recently push back its timetable and now expects to have a new facility by the start of the 2018 season. new at 6:00 an unusual response reportedly planned to the idea of a police crack down on bicyclists in san francisco. examiner reports cyclists are upset about a plan to get tough on running stop signs and red lights. so wednesday opponents will take to the streets with a novel protest called a stop in. the group will ride san francisco's low climb wiggle route from market to golden gate park obeying every top sign

along the way, single file. they call the law requiring full stops at stop signs misguided. police in novato are crediting license plate readers with alerting them to two stolen cars. officers say the readers are mounted on several is patrol cars. the devices scan plate numbers and try to match them with numbers in the database. over the weekend the readers let officers know two cars parked in an apartment complex in the lake view court area of novato were reported stolen. it's not clear in any arrests have been made in the case but the cars have been recovered. some cars also broken into now. this sounds simple but not everyone is look locking up their vehicles. it is leading to a rash of thefts. officers are asking you to do the following, lock your car even if sitting in the driveway or garage. remove visible valuables from your car. tone leave your keys in the car and report suspicious persons and vehicles in your neighborhood. also check your security camera
