bobbi kristina face down and unresponsive in her bathtub january 31st the for months her family kept vigil as she was put on a ventilator, moved to a rehab facility and finally placed in hospice care. ♪ >> as the daughter of two stars, 10-year-old bobbi kristina's childhood was documented in a reality show about her father bobby brown. fight at 14, her parents divorced. five years later, houston was found dead in a bathtub at a befr i had hills hotel. soon after, bobbi kristina spoke with oprah winfrey. >> does it seem real? >> sometimes, no. sometimes it's so surreal that, you know, i still walk in the house, mom? >> a year ago she said she married nick gordon, a controversial couple her mother had taken gordon in when he was younger and he was often seen as bobbi kristina's adopted brother.

the federal government is slapped fiat chrysler with the largest fine ever in the wake of a string of recalls. the company is being forced to buy back some cars that admits are defective and potentially dangerous. nbc's tom costello has more on this. tom, good morning. >> hi, matt. it's a 70-million fine. if you didn't add in the fines and penalties, it could add up to $105 million, that's a record. but this is what is really unusual. fiat chrysler buying back half a million vehicles that it has already recalled. the national highway traffic safety administration is imposing the fines and penalties because of what it says the company -- what it calls the company's lax attitude and notifying customers of the recalls and in fixing the cars that were recalled. the vehicles included in the buy back are the dodge suv and ram pickups built between 2008 and '12. owners are more than a million jeep cherokees from the 1990s that are prone to catch fire will be able to trade in

vehicles for above market value or receive a financial incentive. in a statement, fiat chrysler agrees to the record penalties and says we also accept resulting consequences with renewed reso many of to improve our handling of recalls and re-estabilsh the trust our customers place in us. matt? >> tom, what if you own one of the cars and we can put that list back up that is involved in this buy back program. what do do you? >> go to your local dealer to get the ball started. but give them a few days. they may not have all the detail right away. just two days ago the company recalled more than a million cars and trucks that could be prone to cyber hacking. but today's fine and the report of national traffic safety administration's effort to get far more aggressive in investigating automotive defects and holding automakers accountable after they took heat for taking so long on the gm switch ignition recall that killed more than -- i'm sorry, killed more than 100 people. >> exactly. all right. we want to put that information

on our website as well. tom, thanks very much. >> in the presidential race, donald trump is riding the wave to a lead of a crowded republican field. two new nbc news marist polls have him at or near the tom in new hampshire and iowa. we're going to talk to the republican chairman about the state of the race in a moment. but first, let's get to nbc national correspondent peter alex ander. good morning. >> good morning. another day, another new poll with donald trump in the lead. while the national polls are usually driven by name recognition, these new polls matter because the voters in iowa and new hampshire, of course, the first two states to weigh in on a presidential race, they're paying attention and trump is hovering at the top. >> we want to take back this country. we have to take it back. >> call of the trump insurgency, the brash billionaire in first place of new hampshire rendz far ahead of jeb bush.

and in iowa, trump has erased scott walker's lead. his surge up ended the republican field ten days before the party's first debate. with rivals complaining trump's campaign is light on specifics and heavy on controversy. >> i think he's appealing to the dark side of american politics. he is not offering solutions to hard complicated problems. >> reporter: trump's campaign hasn't identified a policy director and the website makes no mention of his policy positions. critics highlight trump's past registration as a democrat and public statements in support of universal health care. >> liberal on health care. we have to take care of people that are sick. >> reporter: trump faces a big hurdle. 44% of iowa republicans view him unfavorably, a3% in new hampshire. looking to breakthrough in a new ad, new jersey governor chris christie blasted president obama's nuclear deal with iran. top priority is to protect the united states of america. and i'm the only one in this

race that has that responsibility. >> hillary clinton still defending her use of personal e-mails. >> the fact that s. that what she had done is criminal. i mean what she has done is criminal. >> the facts are pretty clear. i did not send nor receive anything that was classified at the time. >> reporter: the controversy could be taking a toll n iowa, 56% of voters say they view clinton unfavorably, in new hampshire that number is 57%. this morning president obama criticized several republican candidates, donald trump among them and mike huckabee who this weekend said the iran deal will take the israelis and march them to the door of the oven." the president set it was part of a general pattern considered ridiculous if it weren't so sad. and he added presidential debates deserve better. savannah? >> we turn to the chairman of the national committee. he joins us exclusively. good morning you to. >> good morning, savannah. >> to briefly recap and i won't go into everything, since trump

launched the run he insulted the mexican people. he has questioned the war hero status of john mccain. he called his opponents everything from stupid, dummy, idiot. he gave out the cell phone number of one of his rivals. why do you think republicans are responding to him? he is zooming ahead in every single poll. >> well, first of all, i think you recognize this is very early. but i also think that he's speaking out to people that are really frustrated with washington, frustrated, i think, in many cases with both parties. and so i think there's an element of that. i think there is an element of that in both parties. i think you see bernie sanders at 35% on the democrat side and, you know, quite frankly, you know with, 16 candidates and 16 choices, i think that you're going to see a lot of different people surge and move ahead, move behind. i think even donald trump had recognized that. and so it's going to be a long process. i think we've got a varsity squad on the field. and what i'm excited about is

the fact that a lot of our candidates are already beating hillary clinton in the important states. that's important, sa van yashgs because hillary clinton is at 100% name id and our candidates are already beating her. >> i want to get to hillary clinton. let me stay on trump for one second. do you worry that there might be long term damage to the republican party brand? i mean he's got an unfavorability rate among general election voters anywhere between 57%, 59% depending on the poll. so people general election voters think republican party equals trump, is that bad news for you? >> well, i actually don't think people think that. i think that all these candidates speak for themselves and it's a long process. it's going to be, what, 15, 16 more months until november. i don't see that, savannah. i think people understand that everyone speaks for themselves. and i'm not worried about that. i do agree that tone matters and how you speak matters. it's kind of like what our moms told us. sometimes it's not what you say,

it's how you say it. and that is very clear. i think most people understand. that. >> last thing on this. do you fear an independent run from donald trump? most political analysts say if he ran an independent campaign, it would peel off enough republican votes to assure a hillary clinton victory. do you have to tiptoe around him to make sure that doesn't happen? >> no. i don't think so. i think every candidate -- my job is not to call balls and strikes but to treat everyone respectfully and fairly. but certainly i think our candidates should pledge not to run as a third party candidate. i don't see that happening. i think everyone understands that. if hillary clinton is going to get beat, she's going to get beat by a republican and most people that run for president run to win. and if our candidates want to win, then they'll have to run as a republican. and i don't fear that. i think that -- i think you've even seen donald trump watch that backward the last few days.

>> you have a slast 16 candidates. many, many of them experienced, qualified, thoughtful, have the policy positions and many of them are worried about getting on to that prime time debate stage. have you heard complaints about the fact that only 10 of them are going to be able to be in that top tier debate? >> well, i mean it's really clear for everyone to understand if you go back to the beginning, back to 2008, back to 2012, we had 23 debates and a traveling circus. no control over the moderateors. we have taken control of the debates. we'll have fewer debates. we have some say over who the moderate moderateors are. not completely, but. some and we'll have a definite calendar. here's the other thing that people need to understand. every candidate is going to be able to compete on debate night. and it was announced that there is going to be two rounds of debates. there is an early debate and then a debate a couple hours later featuring the top 10. so all 16 are going to be debating on debate night. it's just that, savannah, i

think people understand we can't fit 16 candidates on a stage. so we're splitting up the debate in the two different heats. >> with all of the candidates vying because they do want to be on that main debate stage zshgs that mean hillary clinton is getting a free pass this summer? she can go about her business because the republicans are all having to battle to get on to that stage? >> yeah. you know what? that's not bad to have a battle instead of a coronation like hillary clinton. it's interesting, everyone is so curious about how the debates are going to work on the republican side and no one's asking the question, you know, when is hillary clinton going to debate bernie sanders? there is no interest on the other side as far as what's happening. i think the interest on our side just gives us a leg up and as i said earlier, you're seeing it now. people across the country know that one of the biggest problems hillary clinton has with americans is trustworthiness. it's why our candidates with a lower name id are already beating hillary clinton in important states across america.

reported engine trouble shortly before crashing in a yard of a home. no one on the ground was lion saga rolls on. police spotted the large cat in a ravine and set up a perimeter to try to contain it. but it ran off into the woods. coming up how safe is your rental car? on rossen report a hidden camera investigation showing popular chains putting you behind the wheel of cars with potentially dangerous problems. >> lots to get to. let's start with the desperate search for two 14-year-old florida boys missing at sea. they went out for a day of fishing on friday and haven't been heard from since. sunday crews found their capsized boat. kerry sanders, what's the latest? >> reporter: the latest is that the u.s. navy has joined the u.s. coast guard in what they are classifying still as an active search and rescue

mission. they are also not downplaying the enormity of the effort that's under way here. as we look at a live picture of the area where they are searching, they have every minute more area to search because of what's known as the gulf stream a flow of water going north at 6 miles per hour. the area they are now searching exceeds the size of the state of maine. all night the desperate search went on. nbc news was allowed aboard one of the coast guard planes searching for a sign of 14-year-olds perry cohen and austin stefanos. sunday night friends and family packed the gym at jupiter christian school to pray for their safe return. >> kind of a shock. hopefully they come back safe. >> reporter: for two days searchers turned up nothing. sunday morning -- >> coast guard received report of an over turned vessel black bottom. >> reporter: the coast guard found the boys' 19-foot boat

capsized 67 miles east of daytona, 170 miles north of where they set sail at jupiter inlet. it gave searchers something to work with. but the search area is more than 33,000 square miles. that's the size of maine. >> i just want him home. i know he's coming home. i just want him home now. >> reporter: austin and perry were last seen buying $110 of gas friday afternoon before setting out for a day of fishing. >> oh he ate it! >> reporter: that afternoon the weather was threatening. the national weather service issued a warning to boaters saying they should seek safe harbor immediately. their families say the two were not supposed to leave the safety of the inlet but they were experienced sailors. >> they have been through rough water, thin water. it opportunity matter. those are salty dog kids. >> reporter: neighbors and friend jay namath is lending his support. >> we just keep on praying, man.

back now at 7:40 with a new rossen reports hidden camera investigation. as we told you earlier, car recalls making news this morning with fiat-chrysler slapped with a fine for failing to complete safety recalls. >> how safe is your car? any open recalls? jeff rossen uncovered a dangerous loophole and it will get people talking. >> it should. we should all pay attention. it's easy to walk out to the driveway and find out if your car has been recalled. what about when you go on vacation and rent a car? you expect it to be safe recalls fixed. believe it or not, while it is against the law to sell a car with an open recall it is not against the law to rent you one. wait until you see the cars we were able to rent from some of the most popular companies. we are on the open road behind the wheel of rental cars.

but these cars have a dangerous secret. when air bags go off, this could happen. te if he can tif air bags rupturing, shrapnel sent flying. over 34 million of these air bags recalled. the largest in u.s. auto history. over 100 injuries. even eight deaths. are there rental cars out there now with the defect? our rossen reports team scanning the most popular companies. it's easy to see if a car has an open recall. just check the vehicle identification number or vin here. it's on every car. then enter it into a government website, safercar.gov at this dollar rent a car our producer called the vin on this ford mustang to another producer in a nearby car. >> looks like we found one. >> reporter: she typed it in and, boom we have a hit.

>> recall status is incomplete. air bag recall. >> reporter: they rent it to us anyway. >> all set. check out at the gate. >> reporter: imagine driving with your family and having no idea about the open recall. scary. over at avis we spot another mustang with an air bag recall. >> i have keys to another one. >> reporter: we trooif off, no questions asked. >> sign there for me. the keys are inside. >> reporter: watch what happens at this hertz location. we find not one but two mustangs with the recall, ready to rent. >> that car is safe and everything right? >> all the cars are safe. >> reporter: outside we have assurances too. >> is that an air bag? >> they all have air bags. >> reporter: these are good? >> yeah all good. >> we were able to rent four cars from three of the most popular rental companies with open recalls that have killed people. is that acceptable to you? >> absolutely not and it shouldn't be acceptable to the

public. >> reporter: we took our results to washington sitting down with senator claire mcmasskill who is pushing for a bill to make it illegal. >> every rental company should immediately be subject to fines. >> reporter: jeff rossen from nbc news. when we returned the car at dollar i alerted the manager. it has an open recall on it for a potentially deadly defect. >> i'm not sure about that. i will refer it to corporate headquarters and check on it. but, again i apologize. >> reporter: you won't rent this to anybody else until this is fixed? >> correct. >> reporter: at avase they make the same promise. >> can you turn off the camera please? >> will you take the cars out of service? >> can you take the cars out of service? >> reporter: they take the cars out of service to be inspected. the companies saying they ground and remove cars when they have the official safety recall notice and they had not received

them. documents obtained by nbc news show the manufacturer in this case ford sent out not one but two unofficial advance recall notices over a month ago. hertz and dollar acknowledging they received the notice but didn't pull the cars because, as policy they wait for the official notice. >> it's a huge problem. you assume when you rent a car that you are going to get a safe car. >> reporter: our investigation already getting result this is morning. after we reached out to hertz and dollar they have taken all ford mustangs out of service until the recall is resolved. the rental companies and american rental car association telling nbc news safety is paramount and pledged their support behind the legislation to make it illegal. ford has not responded to our request for comment. experts say you should go out to your driveway now, check the vin and do it for rental cars too. you can do it now. we have a link on my facebookle

but one doctor is suggesting the unthinkable. saying it's okay to step away from the sunscreen, at least for a little while. in an op-ed in "the washington post" the sun is not the enemy it is made out to be. face would high cancer rates, health authorities have rushed to dam the sun without taking into account the many scientifically health ben fits it provides. caused widespread paranoia about sunlight. >> we know we're concerned about skin cancer but to avoid all direct sunlight actually increases risk for vitamin d deficiency. d deficiency can potentially increase your risk for many chronic illnesses. >> reporter: dr. holik writes that the danger of sun exposure is exaggerated and he does say to go easy on the sunscreen. >> more and more doctors are now getting onboard and saying that some sensible sun exposure makes

sense. >> reporter: the american cancer society says that's the wrong message. warning the dangers of sun exposure are very real. every year nearly 5 million people are treated for skin cancer. dr. arnold baski says even a few minutes in the sun without protection is risky. >> we know that five sunburns in a lifetime will result in 80% risk increase in the risk of sun cancer. >> reporter: a supplement is just fine. >> the suggestion in the particular article in "the washington post" really fly in the face of fact. the expoesher tosure to the sun to get vitamin d doesn't make a lot of sense when you weigh it against the chances of getting skin cancer. >> reporter: for "today" kate snow, nbc news, new york. dr. natalie azar is a medical contributor. confusing. >> hi, matt. >> we know we need vitamin d. what are the symptoms if we don't have enough vitamin d? >> there are no symptoms.

you can be vitamin d deficient and not know. some people with severe vitamin d deficiency can have muscle pain and the most common association, of course, is with osteoporosis osteoporosis. but cause rickets in children, which can be a painful bone condition. >> this doctor says get your vitamin d in part from the sun and the american cancer society says, no, get a supplement. what do we believe? >> there are numerous layers of debate to this issue. oneshould you get your vitamin d from the sun or a supplement? more debates. the underlying layers of debate, what constitutes a vitamin d deficiency and how much is adequate for bone health? these are issues. all these questions that i am raising have no definitive answer. >> how much sun should we be getting? vitamin d? >> a recommendation for a daily amount of vitamin d. basically very simple from birth to 12 months is 400 international units. from about age 1 to age 70, the recommendation is 600 international units and above

the age of 70 and/or if you're post-menopausal for men and women, the recommendation is 800 international units. this is from a supplement. this does not take into account sun exposure. to give you an idea, if you are going to make the decision, i don't want to get away from supplements, i want to do this naturally. is there a safe way to do it? depends on a number of things. very fair skin, you don't need that much. if you're darker skinned, you need more. if you're near the equator, the sun is much stronger and what time of day and how long? this is, i'm not going to be a tiebreaker today. this is a very heated discussion and debate that happens pretty much on a regular basis amongst those of us who deal with vitamin d on a regular basis. >> we're not telling people to stop going out and using sunscreen altogether. >> absolutely not. up next on "trending" we'll see if you can tell what this 3-month-old baby said to his dad that blew him away. plus, we're tackling your favorite workouts on our summer of secrets.

her health and her condition yesterday. the family confirmed that after six months of unresponsive health conditions. she's only 22 years old. she was rushed to the hospital january 31 after being found in her bathtub in her home outside of atlanta. apparently she never regained consciousness despite conflicting reports of her condition. she was the only child of bobby brown and whitney houston who, of course, died also in the bathtub in 2012. the houston family released a statement saying in part she's finally at peace in the arms of god. we once again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during the last few months. there was an overwhelming response of grief and compassion. but oprah winfrey the houston family think she's finally at peace. since her mother's passing she had turbulent sadness in life.

>> you got the sense even before that. this was a really difficult childhood and young adulthood for this young woman. unfortunately didn't seem she had a lot of people in her life that could help her. >> her death is being invest investigated. there is an autopsy planned as well. in the end, it's one of the stories we all watched play out. you pray for a different ending. >> 22 years old. >> a baby. >> any time a 22-year-old loses her life it's heartbreaking. >> yes. >> we have a different note. >> yeah. here's something we all -- we work in newsrooms -- can relate with. did you know it takes 25 minutes to get back to your original task after an interruption? >> so it shall. >> say you look at twitter. you're writing a script, trying to write an e-mail.

we think the chlorine is mixing with metals causing a reaction to turn the hair green. a couple of tips i thought were useful is to go into the pool with already wet hair. if you think of it simply dry hair is a sponge. the drytrier the hair drier the hair you will absorb more chlorine and get more of that effect. putting coconut oil or conditioner in to seal and prevent more water absorption and most importantly, as soon as you get out, rinse off with clean water to rinse off the chlorine and there are specialty shampoos you can use. >> summer vacation time people think of vejing out, giving your body a break from activity. >> do you exercise on vacation? >> no. >> i do. walk or do a more fun exercise. >> exactly. i still exercise when i go on vacation. do i get up at dawn and get the
