7:04 am
they're not sending their best. they're bringing drugs. they're bringing crime. they're rapists. and some, i assume, are good people. >> now, a new controversy is brewing after michael cohen, a lawyer for the trump organization, reportedly made these comments to the daily beast. you're talking about the front-runner for the gop presidential candidate. as well as private individual who never raped anybody. and of course, understand that by the very definition, you can't rape your spouse. the comments coming in response to an article published monday that resurfaced allegations that trump raped his then-wife evonna back in 1989. >> i don't think anybody could have anticipated that sort of response. >> trump has denied those accusations in the past. his campaign releasing a statement overnight saying this is an event that has been widely reported on in the past. it is old news and it never happened. it is the standard lawyer technique which was used to exploit more money from mr. trump, especially since he
7:05 am
had an iron clad prenuptial agreement. it's just a way for the daily beast, which has been reporting inaccuratery on mr. trump for years, to get some publicity for itself, but it's cohen's comments on rape that went viral overnight. senator claire mccaskill reporting, most shocking part of this? trump's lawyer thinks it's legal to rape your spouse. the daily beast also reports cohen said i think you should go ahead and write the story you plan on writing. i think you should do it because i think you're an idiot and your paper is a joke and it's going to be my absolute pleasure to serve you with a $500 million lawsuit, like i told you i did to univision. >> he said things not fit for "today," so i won't say them here. he said he would do disgusting things to us in addition to the multimillion dollar lawsuit. we're just waiting for that. >> ivana just released a statement from trump's campaign saying the story is totally without merit. i have nothing but fondness for

donald and wish him the best of luck on his campaign. incidentally, i think he would make an incredible president. meanwhile, bloomberg did the math on trump's wealth using his financial disclosure statement, valuing him at $2.9 billion, not $10 billion. >> another republican candidate facing criticism this morning, forker arkansas governor mike huckabee after he called the iran nuclear deal the equivalent of walking the israelis to the oven. peter alexander has the latest on this. >> good morning. you said it, this time the republican candidate who is stirring up the conversation with his contentious comments is not donald trump. it is mike huckabee, standing firlly behind his statement linking the president's iran nuclear deal to the holocaust. israel's ambassador to the u.s. called the language inappropriate, but several republican candidates have been less critical, including ted cruz, who said huckabee is
7:07 am
exactly right. >> you have a little bit of a follow-up. >> mike huckabee monday not backing down. >> i will not apologize and i will not recant because the word holocaust was invoked by the iranian government. i have stood at that oven door. i know exactly what it looks like. >> on the defensive over these comments criticizing president obama's iran nuclear deal. >> he would take the israelis and basically march them to the door of the oven. >> one prominent jewish advocacy group saying the comments were completely out of line and unacceptable, and other republican rivals weighing in. jeb bush, who says he respects huckabee, condemned that type of language. >> this is not the way we're going to win elections. >> president obama agreed, traveling in africa, he insists americans deserve better. goding republicans like huckabee and trump. >> would be considered ridiculous if it weren't so sad.
7:08 am
>> looking to raise money off the controversy he started, huckabee responded what is ridiculous and sad is that president obama doesn't take the iran threats former arkansas governor has seemingly changed his tune. he said the u.s. might be able to live with a containing iran. several contenders are using the same playbook. ratchet up the rhetoric like trump if you want to be heard. lindsey graham. ted cruz, and rand paul, all resorting to stunts. but paul concedes, even he has his limits. >> i'm traing the line of self-immolation. none of us are going to set ourselves on fire. >> well, critics say mike huckabee's language obscured his point. the new polls this morning shows a majority of americans want congress to reject the iran deal. there are the numbers on your screen. 52% say reject it. 44% of americans want it approved.
7:09 am
>> peter alexander, thank you very much. governor mike huckabee joins us now. governor, good to see you. >> great to be here. >> it seems to me the irony is you're taking a pro-israel stance, but in explaining the stance, you have offending people in israel and jews all over the world. >> heartily. >> they write inappropriate. fellow republicans have called them offensive and outrageous and the anti-defamation league spokesperson called them out of line and unacceptable, and you're not backing down an inch. >> not at all. the response from jewish people has been overwhelmingly positive. the response from holocaust survivors, from the children of holocaust survivors. i was last night at an event, probably one of four gentiles in the entire event, jewish event. people were overwhelmingly supportive. >> here are the people who are saying just the opposite. >> you're hearing from the adl, from the democrats. >> we're hearing from people, by the way, like you, oppose the iran nuclear deal.
7:10 am
>> some of them just need to go back and read what the iranians themselves said. we have developed the missiles that will replace israel with a big holocaust. >> but that's their words. why would a presidential candidate echo those words? if you're elected president and you're the one negotiating with the iranians in the future, would you stand in the oval office and address the american people and say my fellow americans. i'm rejecting the iranian people because it will march the israelis to the door of the oven? would you say that as president of the united states? >> that's exactly what i would say. we don't trust people who would threaten to kill israel, threaten to wipe them off the map. who have said that they are glad they're -- that they're a one-bomb country. >> as president of the united states, would you use the words march the israelis to the door of the oven? >> yes, i would. let me tell you why. because i have been to auschwitz three times. i have stood at that very place.
7:11 am
i have been to israel dozens of times. my first trip there was 22 years ago. the one thing i was sure of is for 6,000 years, jews have been hunted down. the last time the world did not take seriously threats against the jewish people, just before world war ii, this ended up in the murder of 6 million jews. >> but as the president of the united states, you would use words to express your policy and views on israel, even if they offended millions of jews around the world. >> we need to use strong words when people make strong threats against an entire group of people, as the iranians use against the jews. this is not part of the iranians. this is something they consistently say. even as we're sitting down having a negotiation with them, and they're crying out "death to america." what kind of negotiation is that? >> answer the critics who say you and other republican canddous are doing and saying anything right now simply to be heard over the roar of donald trump. is there truth to that?
7:12 am
>> no, it's not, if i were going to make noise about this, don't you think i would have a wetter forum than a weekend satellite radio show that i didn't think many people would listen to. >> you say it there, end up here. >> because you invited me. by the way, it's nothing i haven't said for the past 42 years having been in and out of israel and having been a strong believer that the reason that the holocaust happened was because so many people naively believe neville chamberlain's ridiculous statement that we're going to bring peace in our time. we ended up seeing 11 million people murdered, six of whom were jews who marched to the ovens i stood in front of. >> in about a week, there's going to be the first debate on the republican side. based on polling numbers you'll be on the stage along with the front-runner donald trump. do you think it's time for you and other republicans to stop treating him as some kind of a side show and start treating him as a real candidate and ask him his views, his policies and his vision for the future of the
7:13 am
country. >> i never treated him as a side show. anyone who has $10 billion is a player in an election because he can afford to make things happen. you know, he's striking a nerve with a lot of people. my job is not to react to donald trump. my gosh, he's getting all the attention he needs without my help. my job is to focus on what i stand for, talk about how to get jobs back in this country, talk about how to keep america safe, and how to return us to our basic moral conscience at a country. those are the issues i'll be focusing on. i'll swim in my lane, i'll let donald trump swim in his. thank you. meantime, another big story we're following this morning, the expanding search for two florida teenagers missing at sea since friday. as the coast guard offers hope of finding them alive. nbc's kerry sanders is on the story in jupiter, florida. good morning to you. >> good morning. the coast guard says searching for somebody out on the water
