outrage, anger grows over an american dentist who killed one of africa's most be loved lions, online death threats forcing him to close his practice and go underground. zimbabwe police wanting to question him on whether he knowingly broke the law for thrill of the hunt today, wednesday, july 29th, 2015. >> from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning. welcome to "today" on a wednesday morning. >> let's get right to this breaking news. there are reports that one of the most sought after terrorists in the world may be dead. >> nbc's bill neely has the latest. what can you tell us? >> good morning, matt, mullah omar is one of the most wanted men in the world. the one eyed leader of the afghan taliban almost a quarter

century. he welcomed osama bin laden as a guest into the country and after 9/11 he was head of the government that refused to hand bin laden over or to expel him. he fled as u.s. and coalition forces swept in and led the insurgentcy that claimed the lives of 3,000 troops. the u.s. offered $10 million for his capture. now the afghan government is looking into reports that he is dead. one afghan intelligence official telling nbc news, the government has not come to that conclusion. he didn't say what the evidence is but the government is convinced mullah omar died about two years ago of hepatitis and his death was kept secret to keep the taliban united. nbc news cannot confirm he's dead and indeed there have been many reports of omar's death the last in may of this year. he's been in hiding since 2001 and in ill health. he's normally so reclusive, it's

thought he's only been photographed twice. one senior taliban official saying he's 100% sure that omar is dead. >> look into these reports yet they haven't been able to find him or track him down since 2001. i don't know how they are going to do that. >> i think what's extraordinary, there's rumors circulating but an afghan official confirmed reports and we are looking into it. the news at home, the heat, oppressive and not going anywhere. let's go right to al for today's high temperatures, pretty darn hot. >> it is going to be really toasty and no relief in sight. more than 40 million americans today in the midst of an official heat wave. temperatures entering a third day above 40 degrees, hottest week of the year for a good portion of the country. so where is the heat the most dangerous? well, parts of missouri, the heat index could climb to 110. normally cool great lakes where folks go to vacation, it could

top 90 degrees for first time since 2013. northern part of michigan, 92 degree heat tieing a 21-year-old record. if you're in texas or florida, you could be looking at temperatures above 100 degrees. here in new york and along the eastern sea board we're in the throws of the longest stretch of 90 degree plus days so far this year. three consecutive days 90 degrees combining with high heat and humidity constitute a heat wave. we have forecasts from new york to philadelphia, you could be looking at at least eight straight days of heat. and hey, if you live in the pacific northwest you're not out of the woods either. we'll look at that coming up a little bit later. >> al, thank you very much. appreciate that. officials are trying to figure out what caused a massive tree to suddenly fall on some children outside of a museum in pasadena, california, sending at least eight of those children to the hospital. nbc's jacob rascon has the latest on that. good morning to you.

>> reporter: matt, good morning, we're talking about children and this morning two of them, a boy and girl, remain hospitalized crushed by this giant pine tree as a day camp turned into a parents' worst nightmare. summer camp may never be quite the same in pasadena after a 75-year-old 75-foot tall pine tree came crashing down on campers without any warning. >> i heard a giant kprash and all of a sudden, people started to run and then screaming. >> i just went out there and started grabbing little kids out of the way. >> reporter: 33 campers ages 6 to 8 scrambled for their lives. eight of them didn't escape the fall. as frantic parents became first responders. >> the teachers were just besides themselves, just screaming and i tell you u. the sight of a child's injured body. >> reporter: firefighters armed with chain saws pulling children

out from underneath the branches. >> we have three patients, two critical. >> reporter: rushed to the nearest hospital in critical condition, suffering blunt force trauma. >> we need two companies, one company per patient and we're going to be transporting them. >> reporter: a half dozen other campers treated for bruises and cuts and scrapes. >> there were a lot of panic with the parents crying and everybody scattering around. >> reporter: a harrowing scene as a day at camp turned into a nightmare. the city of pasadena owns this land and this tree and later today will send a tree expert to determine the cause of the fall. right now they just don't know. as the camp is scheduled to reopen later today. matt and savannah. >> jacob rascon, thank you very much. >> the new york prison worker who helped two killers stage a brazen escape will be sentenced next month. she has pled guilty to her crimes. joyce mitchell's confession has been obtained from nbc news and

it is revealing never before heard details about her involvement in all of this. john yang has details on this. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, joyce mitchell wakes up here in the county jail a convicted fell on after pleading guilty to the charges. that document obtained by nbc news details her crimes. >> are you plead gs guilty because you are in fact guilty? >> reporter: for first time joyce mitchell's confession, obtained by nbc news, detailing in her own words over the course of 20 hours what she did for convicted killers richard matt and david sweat and why. i was caught up in the fantasy, she said, i enjoyed the attention and feeling both gave me and thought of a different life. >> matt got her to feeling good about herself, better than she had for a period of time and she was swept off her feet a bit. >> reporter: she got to know matt and sweat from her work in

the prison tailor shop giving them rum and coke and performing sex acts on matt and sending them both x rated notes and pictures of herself. she admitted smuggling in tools like drill bits, chisels and padded gloves and glasses with lights. at first she thought they were using them to make picture frames. she known for two months they intended to escape and eventually agreed to be the getaway driver. >> the aspect of the three of them being the primary people involved is somewhat, you know, unbelievable. >> reporter: matt and sweat gave her a list of supplies to bring when she was to pick them up. c phones, shotgun, tents, sleeping bags, fishing pole and money. what to do about mitchell's husband, lyle, who matt called the glitch? matt would kill him, even giving joyce two white pills to drug him. in the end she backed out not showing up at the appointed hour. i really do love my husband, she

said and he's the reason i didn't meet inmate matt and sweat. still standing by his wife, lyle mitchell was in court and visited her in jail. >> why? >> because i love her. >> reporter: as part of a plea agreement, mitchell has agreed to serve up to the maximum term in prison of seven years. she'll be sentenced september 28th. matt and savannah. >> thank you very much. >> the nfl's deflate-gate scandal appears headsed to federal court after tom brady's four-game suspension was upheld by the nfl commissioner, roger goodell. the ruling also containing a bombshell, that brady had his cell phone destroyed just before he met with investigators. nbc national correspondent peter alexander has the latest on this. good morning. >> good morning to you. tom brady posting his response on facebook page early this morning writing i'm very disappointed by the nfl's decision. i did nothing wrong and no one in the patriots organization did either.

right now at gillette stadium at new england, bob kraft, the owner of the patriots is addressing the media responding to that 20-page decision that it's not the crime, it's the cover-up. >> was never -- >> biggest quarterback playing defense this morning. tom brady teeing off on the league's decision to uphold his four-game suspension over deflate-gate, calling it deeply disappointing. in his report tuesday, roger goodell said that brady had the cell phone and sim card he used throughout the scandal destroyed. ordering his personal assistant to do so on or about march 6th, 2015, the very day brady was interviewed by independent investigators. the report says that kept some 10,000 text messages away from those investigators. the league instead receiving a letter saying that electronic data could no longer be recovered. goodell wrote, rather than failing to cooperate, mr. brady

made a deliberate effort to conceal relevant evidence and undermine the investigation. bratddy's camp insists tom was completely transparent and patriots blasted the suspension as unprecedented. the players union said the league based on the suspension on the smoke screen of irrelevant text messages and plan to appeal in federal court on brady's behalf. brady has maintained his innocence publicly at news conferences. is tom brady a cheater? >> i don't believe so. >> in high profile interviews. >> all of the facts will come out after the super bowl and how will those facts come out? that will be news to me as well. >> reporter: the new revelation could be a lasting tarnish on his golden boy reputation. >> i think what happened today has given the people already inclined to be against tom brady to presume he is guilty. they have more ammunition to argue he's guilty. the people on the other side of that coin, they don't know what to say.

>> some of tom brady's rivals are piling on. former ravens wide receiver smith tweeting, you can't say cheaters never win. brady reported early to patriots training camp. next stop likely to be in federal court. the league preemptively filed a suit to confirm brady's suspension. >> yes, they did. bob costas, the host of nbc's "football night in america" joins us. you're a lifelong football fan. you wake up this morning, are you feeling better or worse about the integrity of the game? >> i think it depends emotionally on where you're waking up. >> i'm talking about you. >> i think they turned a misdemeanor into a federal case, both figuratively and literally. there's no question consciousness of guilt both in his interview with me super bowl week and press conference, destroying the cell phone, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, but guilty of what? to me this seems more like watering down the infield or

playing field to slow down a speedier opponent or pine tar on a bat. it's not awful but it became awful because of the way the league overreacted and brady himself didn't say what he could have said. >> i think if you read that 19-page report and i know you have, to me i felt like this isn't about deflating footballs anymore, this is about a cover-up. this is about someone who didn't cooperate and someone who destroyed evidence. >> it's always the cover-up rather than the crime. i've been thinking from the beginning, why didn't he just say, look, the equipment people knew i wanted the footballs at the lowest per missible end of inflation. if accidentally or purposely they went beyond that, i take responsibility for it because i've communicated my preference but didn't order them to do that. >> the league gave him an out on text messages and e-mails, they said your lawyer can go through these communications and hand over to us the ones that are pertinent. >> yes. >> the notion that he was doing

what would be understandable, trying to protect private information, that doesn't apply here. >> now what's the next step? it's going to federal court, that we know. if he applies for an injunction, fine, that means the case goes ford and he gets to play the first four games. if he loses, he could face suspension in the middle of the season. >> the legal experts that i've read and listened to weighing in on this have said, generally speaking, a court won't grant an injunction unless they believe you have a good case and good chance to win it after its reheard. he's going to have to make that case and what it hinges on isn't whether the evidence would stand up in a criminal court. it's whether under article 46 of the agreement between the players and the league, they have the right to do this. whether it was the right decision is a separate thing from whether or not he has the right to impose the penalty and hear the appeal. >> all about process, not going to go to permit. >> four-game suspension, a lot of people are arguing and comparing that to greg hardy of

received what he thought was a bomb that he asked someone else to build for him. prosecutors say he told undercover sources working for the fbi he wanteded to bury and set off a bomb on a florida beach. in south beach miami or florida keys or both. prosecutors identify him as a 23-year-old from key west, florida, harlem suarez, he made an ice is recruitment video saying we will destroy america and divide it in two and raise our black flag on top of your white house. court documents say he placed a mail order for an ak-47 assault style rifle like this in may but never got it because he mixed up the paperwork. prosecutors say though he wanted to build a bomb, he didn't know how and never had any explosives. he paid one of the undercover operatives $100 for what he thought was a bomb and arrested when he received it made by the fbi, it was a dud. his lawyer said harlem suarez is

no terrorist. >> he's never been arrested before. he has no criminal history prior to this arrest. so he's very distraut. >> he's been ordered held in a federal detention center for now and will be in court next week for a detention hearing. one woman was killed and ten others injured when a bible school van crashed into a freight train in middletown, ohio on tuesday. the van was carrying mostly children and officials say the crossing gate was down and the lights were flashing at the time of the crash. all of the injuries are believed to be nonlife threatening. to a major leaguer who went over the top in an effort to make a spectacular catch for his team. on tuesday night, sends a drive towards right center field and boston betts makes a great running catch before tumbling over the wall and landed awkwardly on his upper back. he appeared to have ended that inning with that catch, however,

you're watching "today in the bay." >> very good wednesday morning to you. 7:26 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. a developing story in the east bay. big traffic problems this morning, after a deadly crash on southbound interstate 880 near high, through oakland. it happened before 5:00 this morning. just north of the coliseum. three cars were involved and the chp says the driver of one of the cars died at the scene. for most of the morning the chp closed all but one southbound lane. mike inouye will have an update on current conditions coming up into prosecutors plan to talk in santa cruz about the death of 8-year-old madison middleton. authorities discovered her body if a recycle bin at apartment complex where she lived. a 15-year-old suspect in

>> reporter: he was known as the pride of zim it isbabzimbabwe cecil the lion. a favorite around the world until this month when the 13-year-old big cat was killed by an american hunter. according to conservation officials cecil was lured out of the game preserve shot first with a bow and arrow. then 40 hours after being stalked the severely injured animal was finished off with a gun, skinned and beheaded. tuesday the name of the man responsible for the killing was revealed. 55-year-old walter palmer a minneapolis dentist and life long game hunter. the killing sparked outrage from around the world and on social media. >> rich americans flying to africa and killing animals for sport on the wall is unacceptable unacceptable. >> reporter: comedian jimmy kimmel choked up talking about the death. >> why are you shooting a lion

in the first place? i'm honestly curious. you want to make this into a positive you can -- [ voice breaking ] -- i'm sorry. okay. i'm good. >> reporter: in a statement, palmer who pled guilty to a license violation after shooting a black bear in wisconsin in 2008 says he hired professional guides secured all the proper permits, and has not been contacted by the authorities. adding in part i deeply regret my pursuit of an activity i love and practice responsibly and legally resulted in the taking of this lion. for critics it wasn't enough. some leaving stuffed toy animals at his home and dental office which abruptly closed yesterday. game officials have arrested his guides on charges of poaching and are looking to talk with the dentist. for "today," kevin tibbles, nbc news, chicago. >> an incredible reaction to this story online.

incredible. >> he has to disappear because the reaction is so hard. coast guard officials are acknowledging that time is running out to find the two 14-year-olds who vanished turg a fishing trip off the florida coast. kerry sanders is on the search for us this morning. what's the latest? >> reporter: the u.s. coast guard rushed two helicopters and a boat off tieybee island georgia, after someone reported a body in the water. that appears to be a false lead. meantime as you look at the ocean you can see the seas are one to two feet. that's good for searching. in the next 24 hours, weather is expected to move in. that could hamper the search efforts. day five and no let-up. overnight a flurry of possible sightings. this video from a coast guard search plane checking out a report near savannah that turned out to be nothing.

but in the air and on the water the desperate search for perry cohen and austin stephanos goes on. it's a race against time and the window is closing. former coast guard rescue swimmer george hathaway told reporter brian entin under the right conditions the teens could survive in the water for quite a while. >> it's 90% now. if you panic you're done. >> reporter: in jupiter, friends and neighbors are holding out hope. >> i feel as long as they are searching and they are the experts then we can continue on and on. >> reporter: on instagram there are almost 6,000 posts under the hashtag find austin and perry. perry's mother pamela writing, hold on tight. we are coming my love. midday friday the first inkling something was wrong. >> we are calling their cell

phones. the boy's cell phone. nobody is answering. >> reporter: the boys' boat was found sunday capsized 170 miles from where they set out. >> just confirmed, nobody is on board. >> reporter: the coast guard searched nonstop. 39 missions. almost 31,000 nautical square miles from central florida to charleston south carolina. >> we know some of the tables are starting to say you are getting to the top end of the survivorability. that's not the only thing we take into account. >> reporter: this is a device that may have been helpful in finding the boys if they had had it. it's a beacon. when it hits the salt water it immediately begins transmitting a fwps location and connects to the coast guard saying there is trouble and help is needed. some of these units cost as little as $250. something i'm sure the family and everybody else wish it is boys had had on their boat. savannah? >> kerry sanders with the latest

day care or camp to see they have been so badly sunburned they are in excruciating pain and end up in the hospital. that's what happened to one oklahoma mother. now she's fighting back. some of the images are graphic. >> ow! >> reporter: two young brothers are recovering from second and third degree burns this morning after being left to utside by their daycare without any sun protection, according to their mother. >> i can't explain to people what it's like as a mother to see your children going through that kind of pain and not being able to answer certain questions that they are, you know, why this happened or mom, please help me, make it stop. it's really been hard to see them like this. you know? >> reporter: the mother says she picked up 5-year-old trey and 7-year-old connor from the happiness is a daycare center on friday afternoon. she said she found both boys in severe pain with burns all over their bodies from their field trip to a nearby water park. she said the day care told her

they ran out of sunscreen and her boys refused to wear shirts for protection. when their sun burns became progressively worse and their skin began to blister, she took the boys to a nearby hospital for treatment. they were airlifted to shriner's hospital in galveston, texas. >> knowing that was obviously very seriouspy. it's overwhelmingly very upsetting. >> reporter: it's raising questions about who, if anyone, is at fault. the mother believes the day care center is responsible. she's filed a police report and hired a lawyer. happiness is a learning center remains closed while the police department looks into the case. the oklahoma department of human services is also conducting an investigation into the incident. the day care facility has been cited by the department of human services 19 times in the past year, mainly for staffing, signage and scheduling issues, records show. its owner geneva young tells nbc news she can't comment until the investigation is complete.

strawberries. you can use blackberry blueberry or nutella, cook' putie butter. and it is reminiscent of the funnel cakes on the boardwalk. >> speaking of the boardwalk, is it hot out there, guys? >> oh so hot. >> borderline uncomfortable. >> so i am going to fold in heavy whipping cream. >> how hard is that? >> that's how i get these guns in the kitchen. i just whip all day -- whip all day long. you just add the ice cream here. after a couple minutes you'll have stiff peaks. it keeps its shape, there we go. i'll help you out. and because you work so hard to fold in all of the whipping cream, just gently fold it into your ice cream. now this is -- >> why do you have to be so gentle what is the big deal? >> the big deal behind the ice cream sandwich is the consistency is nice and creamy. sometimes ice cream sandwiches the ice cream is too hard and the ice cream squirts out the

side. so after that you'll just pour it into a freezer-safe dish like this pyrex dish right here. >> lined with seran wrap? >> and that help later when we cut out the ice cream sandwiches. help me pop this in the freezer. >> okay. i'll meet you around. >> and if you can grab the finished one in there for me that would be awesome. >> okay put this one up here. out comes the finished one. >> yes. >> how are you going to cut these? >> we'll let them hang out a bit, they are too cold. we are going to make funnel cakes. have you made a funnel cake before? >> i have not. what kind of oil is that? >> this oil is at 150 degrees. add this into my funnel. the way a funnel cake works, i don't know if anyone knows this you hold a funnel close it with your finger at the very bottom. to help the batter move along, just spray it with a little nonstick cooking spray. and then carefully you're going to drop the batter into the oil. and this takes a little bit of
