just yesterday. we are about to go from hot and dry to warm and muggy as we head into the weekend. more on that coming up in the microclimate forecast. and already going from clear sailing to a bit of a backup over here at the bay bridge. we will talk about the slowing that i can forecast as welcoming up for the east bay. >> announcer: this is "today in the bay." a good thursday morning. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. he died in the line of duty. he died just to go his job. today the city of hayward is sparing no expense laying police sergeant scott lunger to rest. >> law enforcement officials from around the state and even governor brown plan to attend sergeant lunger's funeral. kris sanchez is outside oracle after fast where that service will take place in just a few hours. >> reporter: there is a long list of dignitaries who are going to speak here at the

celebration for life for sergeant lunger, but the folks at that people might be most interested in hearing from are the sergeant's family that had asked for privacy in the days following his death, they are going to speak later this morning as well. the sergeant's body will be brought here to oracle arena in a few hours in a procession slightly similar to the one that he got on the day that he died but larger. the motorcade will depart chapper of the chimes in hayward this morning. that will follow mission boulevard to foothill, a street then 880 to oracle arena. there were viewings last night for the family and public where people shared stories about the man who was dedicated to family, duty and community. sergeant lunger not only worked s.w.a.t. and the gang unit he also trained new officers and coached a girls softball team at a high school in oakley. other agencies are covering hayward today so that nearly all members of the police force could be here. some of them were working the night that sergeant lunger was shot and killed by 21-year-old

mark estrada during an early morning traffic stop. we are also expecting officers from across the country. during the celebration of life we will hear from sergeant lunger's family, his towers, father and brother will speak, his sister is going to speak and a the police chief along with other members of the force are going to speak as well. the celebration of life is to begin at 10:00 this this morning. organizers are asking if you are going to attend the service pleasing romt. they will trying to get 10,000 people into oracle arena for the service and the family really doesn't want to have their private burial on time this afternoon. in oakland, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. rolling road closures for the funeral procession begin in a few hours. >> let's turn to mike inouye on what to expect. >> over here this is when we put this into context, hayward they will start their procession over

toward oracle arena. happening between 8:00 and 9:00 and this will be the worst time of the morning commute as well as all this traffic heads right through the same section for 880. mission boulevard a huge thoroughfare as well as a street. this will be a rolling closure situation as they move. the best advice i can give you allow extra time through the area. reroute to 580 if you can through that portion of the east bay. anywhere north of the san mateo bridge likely to get a lot of congestion between 8:00 and 9:00. this will be a speck cal. keep those vehicles moving and obey law enforcement as they travel through the area and do what you need to do for safety sake. more follow-up now. two local law enforcement agencies are stepping in to help cover the city of hayward so every officer with the department can attend this morning's funeral. they are going to answer 911 calls and cover traffic in hayward for 36 hours. police say the city of hayward is going to be staffed more than it would be on a normal day or

prepares to add extra patrols. starting this weekend the department will partner with other agencies to have more officers on the streets. this comes after an extremely violent weekend that saw two homicides. the department will rely on more overtime and probation officers as well as state parole officers to help keep the streets safe. >> the chief and his command staff got together to ensure that we have a plan to curb the violence for this coming weekend and any other weekend. the department says it's looking at its five designated gang zones to see if they need to be modified. happening today, the teenager accused in the killing of maddy madison will make his first appearance in court. >> this as a community still reeling from that incident. "today in the bay" bob redell joining us live. what are classmates saying about the murder suspect? >> reporter: we are live outside santa cruz county superior court where in a few hours that accused killer of maddy madison will be making his first appearance before a judge.

we are talking about 15-year-old adrian gonzalez. when you do talk to his classmates at santa cruz high school where he would have been a sophomore you get two pictures of a 15-year-old boy now accused of murdering his eight-year-old neighbor. one paints him as the kind of student who stirred up trouble with classmates, another shows him as someone who was kwie he et and shy, but to hear what he stands -- but to hear what he stands accused of murder, it's a little bit different. >> i was pretty shocked when i heard it because he was in pie class and never really expected someone to do that that i knew. >> reporter: yesterday the santa cruz county district attorney announced that he would be charging the 15-year-old gonzalez as an adult. the da wouldn't divulge details about the case as far as motive, for example, but did say that gonzalez faces charges including murder, kidnapping and sexual assault after he allegedly lured his eight-year-old neighbor sunday evening into his family's apartment unit before killing her and dumping her body in a

recycling bin. reporting live in santa cruz, bob redell, "today in the bay." claims of racial profiling in san jose. this morning an officer is accused of pulling a gun on a man in front of his children for no reason. a couple from almaden valley is suing the san jose police it department in federal court. the suit claims officer alex der teller pointed a gun at emanuel stevens and cuffed him after following his car home from had his daughter's school. another officer later told the couple they were following up on a call about a suspicious black man with a backpack. no comment so far from the police department. new flames but a familiar sight, firefighters kept busy by three overnight fires burning suspiciously close to each other. it happened in lafayette near the same spot where a separate fire burned eight acres yesterday morning. >> those flames started to peek out on to the highway at one point. stephanie chuang joining us live. do firefighters think this is

coincidence or that they might be connected? >> reporter: that's the question. nothing official out yet but we are talking about three overnight fires happening within 20 minutes and two miles of one another. so is far definitely no link to yesterday morning's fire. with our fresh video from this morning you can see firefighters, ten fire ruse, in fact, called to put out these three small fires all along highway 24 in lafayette. they happened along the stretch of oak hill road. the fires were not big in size, but they are suspicious in nature. that's according to contra costa county fire which adds all these fires are a good remainder to everyone in the bay area to take fire danger especially seriously as the hot weather and dry conditions persist. >> the biggest thing is just to stay vil plant. it is high fire danger still, it will be for the rest of the week. fires can start very easily right now because of the weather conditions, they are just right for that. >> reporter: last might's fires

are a couple miles from yesterday morning's eight acre grass fire above highway 24 near pleasantville road. firefighters are trying to determine the cause of that blaze. firefighters say the best bet to determine if these are cases of arson is if people can call am this if you were in the area of highway 24 in lafayette and a rind da between 10:50 and 11:30 last night. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." obviously conditions right now ripe for fires and we are worried about that, hoping that we are going to see some sort of cool down. meteorologist kari hall joining us with the latest. >> and it will still be warm today, a little bit more humidity but the wildfire conditions still a little bit unfavorable today because we have had these shifts in the wind. now the winds will come from the southwest today and it may be a little bit higher with gusts up to 20 miles an hour, the humidity high this morning, but the daytime humidity drops to 23% during the overnight hours it rises up to 75%. we are not dealing with the

widespread triple digits today, temperatures climbing into the 80s and 90s. a look at the humidity this morning in the mid 70s as far as the percentage of the air loaded into that moisture loaded into the air and the highs today will still be warm in many spots like los gatos reaching 92 degrees and san bruno 77 degrees, the embarcadero will be at 72 degrees. a lot more sunshine elsewhere across the bay, but some more clouds in the city. 85 degrees in napa, walnut creek 98 degrees and we could still have a couple of spots hitting 100 degrees like pleasanton, but not as many as yesterday. this trend continues into the weekend with some slightly milder temperatures, more on that come canning up in a few minutes. let's see how traffic is moving it this morning with mike. the bay bridge moves pretty well but i'm watching the eastbound direction out of san francisco and out of trez from this view. reports of a bump and run involving a truck and smaller vehicle. no one injured from what i

thside sourceconfirm tus -- "today in the bay." this might seem like kind of a foreign idea, teaming up to host the olympics. inside sources confirm to us that the u.s. olympic committee has reached out to san francisco and los angeles for a joint bid for the 2024 games. boston backed out of its chance to bid for those games on monday. if this new found arrangement works out, it would be the first time that two cities are awarded the games together. now, there is a time limit to make this decision. the usoc will submit its choice for a bid to the olympic committee in mid-september. giants president and ceo larry baer led the previous

unsuccessful bid but says he likes this new idea. >> i think the best approach to -- for the games actually to come to the united states this 2024 would be san francisco and los angeles pairing up. >> a combination bid? >> combination bid. >> never done before. so since it's so early right now in the proposal's timeline it's unknown how the events would be splid up. it's believed the track and field events would be in the los angeles while the swimmer and water events date of birth in the bay area. an angry mob attacked uber drivers with clubs and stones outside the mexico city airport. it was all part of a demonstration by licensed taxy drivers to call for a total halt of the ride sharing service. it's video showing people flashing windows, throwing eggs at cars. one man destroyed a rear window with a large rock. the attack damaged between 10 and 12 cars.

watch. the bbc canceled the show after a fistfight between the show's host and producer. this morning we hear amazon is going to pick up the show or at least do a car so he with the same host and same idea. they probably can't call it top gear. top gear will be available to amazon prime customers starting next year. a new age of television where the show that people are talking about, "house of cards," top gear, really aren't tv shows at all. we had expected top gear to go to the house of the house of cards, netflix. a bit of a surprise, honestly, that they ended up with amazon. both are fully capable of producing tv shows, they have proven that in the past. it's still a surprise. you can still watch old episodes of top gear on netflix. let's check your news before the bell, bertha combs is live. good morning. >> good morning. i see they took at gear, you can buy it on amazon. sounds like brilliant marketing to me.

the markets this morning, though, are looking to extend their winning treek but futures reports to a lower open at least. stocks rose tuesday boosted by rising oil prices even as the feds signal its closer to a possible interest rate hike this year. in focus today we will get report on second quarter gdp, which is expected to show the economy rebounded this spring, thanks to higher consumer spend ping. the dow rising 121 points to 17,751, the nasdaq up 22 to 51.11. i admit i have watched top gear. it was kind of whacky and fun. >> it's whacky and fun. you are one of the 350 million. all right. bertha combs, thank you. facebook reported its profits wednesday afternoon, we will hear were linked in tonight. facebook did just fine, its stock is slightly lower this morning, but you can ignore that. just saying, guys, just fine is nice to say considering how badly yelp and twitter did. just terrible.

out the door. here is a look at what we're looking at now as far as our temperatures across the bay. patchy fog in san francisco, it's 60 degrees, south bay 63 degrees, come on over and take a look at this seven is day forecast at the bottom to of the screen. not a huge change in tease temperatures, but the trend will be for some slightly milder air to roll into the bay as we head into the weekend. today's forecast still pretty hot in the south bay, 93 degrees, 79 degrees in the peninsula and the east bay 78 degrees, san francisco 75 and the east bay reaching into the lower 90s. also better air quality. remember yesterday we had that spare the air alert? well, today it will still be moderate, but not healthy, which is a much welcomed sight, and also the winds now shifting directions. we will have more of an on-shore flow as we head into the afternoon. winds picking up to about 10 to 15 miles an hour at times, a little bit stronger, especially in the north bay and that helps

bring in some cool ocean air, but the heat fades over the next couple of days. we will replace that dry heat with some milder humidity and that pay also help spark off some showers and some storms for southern california as well as the sierra, but it doesn't look like we will see much of that moving into the bay unfortunately. here we are with our temperatures this weekend. great weather to get outside and the lowest humidity will be on sunday. in the south bay highs reaching he into the mid 80s and still hot in the north bay, 91 degrees. that's a look at weather. now mike gets you out the door and at work on time. we are hoping so. kari, i want to warn these folks for 580, extra slow. eastbound just past he will char row slowing sews up here. >> look at the map, we are talking about the construction overnight road crew eastbound and westbound. this is a late pickup for the eastbound direction causing more speck taker plowing and

website. nbcbayarea.com. happening later today the teenager accused in the brutal killing of maddy madison is going to face a judge for the first time. >> "today in the bay" bob redell live in santa cruz. what else are we learning about this case, bob? >> reporter: 15-year-old adrian gonzalez expected here in santa cruz county superior court at 8:15 to learn of the charges that he faces and also to possibly enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. now, because of the brutal murder of eight-year-old maddy madison the brutal nature of the murder, the district attorney has decided to charge her accused killer as an adult. some of those charges include murder, kidnapping, sexual assault and a special circumstance of lying in wait. if convicted, gonzalez faces life in prison. not the death penalty because he is a juvenile. >> we have charged this individual as an assault with the crimes for which he is responsible. we are going to bring him to

justice and at this point there is no plea deal on anything. >> reporter: this is a picture that gonzalez posted to instagram during the 24 hours maddy madison was missing from her santa cruz apartment complex where she and gonzalez were neighbors. police believe on sunday evening gonzalez lured maddy into his apartment, killed her and dumped her body into the recycling bin. coming up within the half hour we will hear what one high school classmate had to say about adrian gonzalez. bob redell, "today in the bay." new this morning, the fires are out but the investigation far from over. investigators are looking into three overnight fires all in the same location. this happened in lafayette near the same spot where a separate fire burned eight acres yesterday. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuang live in lafayette this morning. do firefighters think those fires are connected? >> reporter: well, that is the big question. fire investigators were sent to all of the scenes, but they are being called suspicion in nature. so far happening all along

highway 24 and happening within 20 minutes and a two miles of one another and that is what is worrisome to firefighters that the small fires were right next to the freeway, happening so close this had time and place, spanning around oak hill road west to el nido ranch road. the three fires were less than an acre but drew out ten fire crews and four battalion chiefs >> this one is a little strange in that it's right on the freeway, very visible. so if anybody has any information they should give contra costa fire a call and ask to speak to our fire investigators. >> reporter: tease are just a couple miles from yesterday morning's eight acre grass fire that forced one family out of its home near pleasant hill road. firefighters still trying to determine the cause of that fire. investigators again asking people to call if they saw anything along highway 24 last

the search for at missinmalaysi. major developments overnight in the search for that missing malaysia airlines jet. just hours ago malaysia's deputy transport minister said he is, quote, almost certain part of a plane wing found on an island is from flight 370. >> "today in the bay" tracie potts joining us live were washington, d.c. this morning. we have just learned that jet wing is going to be sent to france for an investigation. >> reporter: exactly. authorities said this morning it could take a couple of days to determine if the number that should be stamped on what they believe to be a wing flap from that boeing 777 is, am in fact, from the missing malaysian flight. it's the only one that's missing

in the world right now, that's why they highly suspect that this airplane part that washed up on the beach of a french island is in fact from that plane. beach combers were cleaning up the beach, they found this part, said it was covered in shells, it's about 6 by 8 feet wide. we're told pictures have been examined and video but they're waiting to get that plane part in the french lab to take a close look at it. the plane of course malaysian flight 370 disappeared over 16 months ago now with 239 passengers and crew on board. many say it disappeared into thin air after months and months of searching in the south indian ocean they couldn't find it. it this part washed up on the western part of the indian ocean near that island not far from madagascar and scientists say yes, because of the currents in that area it could have drifted that far. so we're waiting to get confirmation that what's been found is actually part of that plane. it would certainly begin to

solve a huge mystery and begin to provide some relief from those families who have been devastated waiting so long for answers. >> of course. we've all been waiting. thank you so much. now 5,000 acres and growing, a wildfire ripping through lake county and this morning no relief in sight. you can see cars engulfed as firefighters try to hold those fire lines. we are told several buildings are threatened and so far at least one burned down. right now the wildfire is sweeping through morgan valley on the south side of clearlake in lake county. at least 500 people are under evacuation orders. no word on what sparked the fire. just a sea of orange there. yesterday's triple digit temperatures are also helping fuel a wildfire still burning east of napa valley. not far from lake berryessa. we're talking about the wragg fire which has been going strong for a week now charring more than 11 square miles. still at least 136 structures

counties accountable. what's going on right now in lafayette, this morning three separate fires broke out within minutes of each other along highway 24. all combined those fires burned less than an acre, they were relatively small, but this is from oak hill road west just a couple miles away from yesterday morning's eight acre grass fire. coming up in the next hour stephanie chuang joins us with more on this investigation and why these fires are being described as suspicious. it is to dry out there, been hot lately, too. >> the tri-valley, it will still be a hot day and then we will trade that dry heat for humidity heading into the weekend. that may also help spark off a couple of storms in parts of the bay area. i will talk more about that. let's get a look at what's happening outside right now it's in the mid 60s in the peninsula as you start out the day heading out the door coastal fog, too. that is back this morning. something we didn't see yesterday. into the afternoon, highs

reaching into the 70s in the peninsula, as well as the east bay and a san francisco, not as hot as it was yesterday, but look at the north bay and south bay. still in the 90s today. as you head out this is what you need to know. there will be areas of coastal fog, the sunrise coming up in about 20 minutes and temperatures not as hot inland today. a cool breeze returns and clouds and fog, but the sunset coming down at 8:16 this evening. here is a look at the fog forecast. here we are at 8:00 in the morning, the dark shades of gray show where visibility will be the lowest. we see that in san francisco, it clears out for parts of the city throughout the day and rolls back in tonight. we will start out tomorrow morning with more of the same. maybe even a little bit more widespread fog and the lower visibility at times as we start out the day tomorrow, but also our temperatures coming down. here is a look at what to expect as we go through the day in san francisco. some temperatures in the upper 60s, even low 70s with more of

those clouds throughout the day, but then we are going to see that high pressure shifting to the east and that's what brought us those scorching temperatures the past few days, but that could also bring a chance of higher humidity for the bay area as well as some showers and storms for the sierra. maybe a slight chance for us as well, but the chance of that very slight. so expect a mainly dry weekend, highs in the 70s and 80s all across the bay. now let's get a look at traffic with mike. we have two key spots we are watching, of course we have the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on, fast track lanes an advantage still. look at your map, the maze is not a problem, however, coming into the maze west 24 at 580 a report of a disabled vehicle. no additional slowing shows up yet. no real surprises for the rest of the bay except for the tri-valley slow down. westbound we expect that, but eastbound as we take the live look there is that section of slowing, the live camera shows you you're jammed up heading to
