the city. if you're trying to get between sf and oakland there's an lter gnat. this is so workers can repair the old track. that means no service between west oakland and the station here in the city. the other option and it's not much better but this is an alternative. bart is offering what they're referring to a lifeline bus

who lost everything began the difficult path trying to move forward. today in the bay stephanie the live this morning and steph, one man said it was just raining fire. >> reporter: that's right, chris. and i just spoke this morning with lauren whose family owned the mobile home park and she couldn't sleep and i'll show you why. this could be happening overnight smoldering in the area that already burned yesterday and if you go to the left you can see that this was the first area to go up in flames and there is a home where you see a shell. you can't make out a what was a bed frame.

>> even still the people who lost everything are keeping focused on staying positive and rebuilding. >> she still had a smile on her face and everyone, even the people that lost everything they're like it's just a home and we're okay. so that's really all that mattered. >> such a great at tut. the aftermath is incredible here at the mobile home park that's been here since the 30s. i want to show you what neighbors are saying was the cause of the flames. the palm trees are beautiful but they kept jumping from tree to tree and that is why the fire moved so quickly across the mobile home park and destroyed so many homes.

gonzal gonzalez is accused of luring 8-year-old mad di in his apartment. police say he sexually assaulted her and killed her there and dumped her body in a recycling bin. gonzalez back in court in september. >> new at 6:07 governor brown granted parole for one of the three men convicted in the kidnapping of 26 killing and their school bus driver nearly 40 years ago. james was convicted of kidnapping in 1976 along with his brother and a friend. they hijacked a bus a bus full of school children and forced them into a trailer. the kids and the bus driver

escaped. >> they kidnapped a girl they killing the kidnapper. the suspect was 40-year-old james. the fbi agents tracked the two to the idaho wilderness and they shot and killed him. his family plans to sue the agency saying he never got a chance for a fair trial before he was killed. >> follow up now going to take a couple more weeks for the park to reopen. a busted pipe sent millions of gallons of water gusting into the gutters this week. crews need more time to complete the repairs. in all, about 15 million gallons of water was dumped from that pipeline. they say they are working around the clock to get everything back

families being priced out of the bay area -- crews on the peninsula will break ground on a new affordable housing complex. welcome back. in the midst of the families crews are going to break ground on a new affordable housing complex. it's going to be built on mission street right next to west lake avenue. housing advocates have been calling for low income families to be forced out of cities because they can't afford the rent. >> new this morning beijing good as gold for the winter olympics in 2022. a short time ago they selected

money. >> it's a short time. >> well, as you lookout side tonight you may notice a rare blue moon. the flame, however, a little misleading. we were just talking about this. blue moon, what makes it rare is the timing. tonight's moon is the second blue moon of the month. this happened because of the calender year. we get the rare blue moon once every three years. >> i will explain that to a little kid. one place relatively speaking from the heat we've seen in the bay area recently. >> it will be nice to get a break all around the rest of the bay though. >> i don't think we'll see much

of the blue moon tonight because it will be cloudy. we've seen the clouds rolling in during the evening hours and continuing through at least mid-morning and temperatures are a little bit on the warm side especially when you factor in the fact that it is a little bit more muggy this morning as we get a look at the 7-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. not much of a huge change in the temperatures. with the mugginess and the temperatures in the 70s and 80s, it will be warm to you, especially during the middle of the day. right now, temperatures are in the mid-60s and today reaching into the 70s and 80s. 86 in the south bay after the clouds roll out of here. east bay 74 degrees and trivalley 93 degrees. san francisco, look for a high today of 70 degrees with breezy wintds and warm in the north bay with a high of 83 degrees. here's what's happening. we're getting monsoon al moisture rolling in here that's going to cause rain across southern california.

for us, we'll see increasing cloud cover and pop up shower or storm for the south bay and a possibility of lightning especially in the south bay and the east bay hills. no major problems expected in the next couple of days. if you're traveling, keep in mind for the sierra as well as southern california there may be storms developing there also in loss las vegas. tomorrow starting out with cloudy skies. 62 degrees and warping up to the 70s and sunshine. the county fair will be warm today. humid but a lot of sunshine this weekend and highs in the mid-80s. low 90s with a mixture of sun and clouds. around 70 degrees in san francisco. now, let's check in with mike to see how your commute is going.

>> it's friday so it's a light volume and pleasant drive right now. you see a good number of cars close to the speed limit approaching the change out of liver moore. the lights are turned on here just before 6 tim testimo:00 ane fast track lanes as well. we'll she you the same thing on our maps and speed centers. eastbound 24, the crash on the shoulder there. no delays are approaching or departing from the walnut creek interchange. over on the hayward side of 92 you have build for the volume. the rest is nicely. note because of the hot temperatures we've had, the warm conditions today as carrie is talking about the weather, we're talking about beach traffic heading towards highway 17. >> it always seems to get jammed up there, mike and those trooiftrooifdrivers are migrating. that city not thrilled about it. it's taking action to try to

keep drivers from using short cuts. 20 miles away but on the weekend the beach crowd is using surface streets to get around the traffic back up on highway 17. at least temp rarely. emergency vehicles could get caught in traffic jams. starting tomorrow more police are going to be directing traffic and extra signs point drivers back toward the freeway and away from downtown. >> uc burkely getting a million dollar grant to help turn the shake alert earthquake system into a reality. the u.s. geological survey says cal is one of the universities that will get $4 million in grants. they're spending 1 million bucks on new sensor equipment. they're hoping to provide people a few second warning before a major earthquake. >> as soon as possible. >> that would be nice. 6:22. ahead on today in the pay a major pharmacy accused of charging people too much for

will spend some big bucks in hopes of crkg down on alcohol-r crimes. ==vo== over the next year - police wi use a 41-thousand dollar grant to cut down on alcohol sales to minors, drunk driving - and public intoxication. the money is coming from the over the next year police are going to use a $40,000 grant to cut down on alcohol sells to minors and drunk driving.

some of the money is also going to be used to fund alcohol education classes. >> if you buy generic drugs from cvs, your local pharmacy, you could be entitled to some money. a lawsuit filed yesterday in federal court in san francisco claims cvs overcharged customers for generic drugs. they estimate hundreds of thousands of people may have been effected since 2008. cvs has not commented on the case. >> i know this is a problem for many sports leagues across the country. they're hoping a new device is going to keep young athletes from getting concussions. within milliseconds of any impact to an athlete's head, that headband is going to send information to a doctor's smart phone. >> more challenging to get the kids to wear the headband. still ahead, a big bart shut down could throw a big wrinkle

town. last night's fire destroyed several homes. >> about half the people in attendance were fellow police officers. the family laid his body to rest later in a private ceremony. >> touching ceremony. >> at 6:31 now, a helicopter skouerring the waters in hopes of spotting more debris that could have come from flight 370. tracey, are officials any closer to answering the big question verifying if that piece of wing is from the missing jet? >>. >> reporter: well, they're getting closer. they put that piece of the wing into the lab.

this stickiness as you head out the door. today highs will be in the mid-70s. 77 degrees in the peninsula and the south bay. 86 degrees and temperatures climbing to the 80s and you have the relative humidity coming up in the 60-70% range. very comfortable today. muggy weekend all across the bay and a slight chance of a pop up storm and a better chance of rain for the sierra. keep that in mind if you're headed that way. otherwise, enjoy some nice milder temperatures. 71 degrees at the oakland as game and by the end of the game it will be in the mid-60s as the clouds start to roll back in. i'll highlight other events going on this weekend. >> carrie, lots of events in the bay and going on today. we'll look at the traffic but not a lot of back up. that's typical for a friday.

the lights are on at the bay bridge. as we're looking at the map we're talking about westbound commute direction. a crash going away from the bridge on the shoulder. that's the only distraction. a note as we're talking about the tube closure that starts tomorrow. tonight everything runs smoothly. we have a crash approaching. no major slowing. a smooth drive across and the bridge and here's the south bay. the live look shows you easy slow of traffic here. >> you need more of a challenge. thank you very much. 6:35. we move now to an investigative unit. exclusive candid comments coming from the new president of the public utilities commission. he's in charge of the state agency from controls from many californians pay for.

we are taken inside the controversy with an exclusive indepth interview. >> imagine for a moment taking over an agency under investigation by the u.s. attorney, state attorney general and a federal grand jury. that's what michael walked into when he became president back in december. this morning we give him a lot of credit. he did something his predecessor, controversial michael never did. he set down in front of our cameras and answered tough questions. it was a no limit 60 minute interview. michael told us it's probably to most frustrating job he ever had. the e-mails are at the center of that state and federal investigation. he said he's read them and found them both troubling and distressing. finally, and perhaps most importantly, the new puc president says he plans to hold them more accountable.

there will be no bart service between oakland and san francisco this weekend. crews are going to work on repairs inside. today in the bay is live at the bay bridge toll plaza this morning. bob, even if you don't take bart, this closure could make getting around the bay and across the bay tough for everybody. >> reporter: sure because the people who would have been taking bart will be joining you here at the toll bridge plaza. here's what happened, the agency will be shutting down the trans bay tube so workers can start repairing the entrance itself. this means no service between west oakland bart. shut down lasting all day tomorrow, all day sunday. regular service will be resuming monday in time for the dmcommut. if you're trying to get in the city, you have the option of the bay bridge again. as i mentioned, that's going to be a much more of a traffic headache than you normally have

to deal with. here's the other alternative. bart is offering whether it referr refers to as the bus line service this is going to be between oakland and the temporary transit bay terminal there. this is not intended for every one, just for people who need it. it's not going to cost extra for bart passengers in terms of money but in terms of money. an extra hour or two more than regular train service would. bart will also offer limited shuttle service to 19th street station again there in oakland. that's going to be happening this weekend. another shut down scheduled for labor day weekend. reporting live, bob today in the bay. >> thank you, bob. a lot of people got to find another way to get around as we

to 1:30 in the morning. >> 6:38 let's get a check on your forecast. mike talked about the armpit index. especially for us, the humidity doesn't kick in this high this time of year and we are feeling it this morning and it will stick around all weekend. a live look at san jose. you see the low clouds and it's all because we have that monsoonal moisture rolling in. as you come over and take a look at the 7-day forecast it's now up at the bottom of the screen. add a couple of degrees to that because of the way it feels with the humidity. also, the monsoonal moisture streaming in the areas. lightning strikes there. i've been strtracking rain movi

closer to the bay. a shower and thunderstorm to the north of that. you may get in on wet weather too this morning within the next couple of hours. it will be fizzling as it continues to move across the rest of the bay area. the temperatures now are in the mid-60s. as we go to the weekend we'll feel this humidity being pumped in as high pressure stays to the east of us and into the weekend more cloud cover. the possibility of lightning strikes and rain rolling into the sierra as well as southern california. the weekend forecast does bring in some of the showers and storms. if you're heading over the i don't similarity, las vegas may have the pop up showers or storms with high humidity and highs reaching into the 90s. let's stay at home. we have a lot coming on here. it will be sunny after those clouds clear out and highs in the 70s. also the aloha festival starting

in the low 60s reaching the 70s. let's get a look at how things are going in the news. the fire grew more than 13,000 acres. the fire started near rocky creek road 50 miles north of santa rosa. t it's in an area easy to access. so far destroyed at least three structures and monday tear evacuations for people who live in at least 500 homes.

you can follow us on facebook and twitter. >> far too many images that look like that. a small grass fire quickly turned devastating as fierce flames ignited a mobile home park. several homes are nothing but burned out shells at this point and this morning seven families began a difficult task of trying to move forward. this happening in the small city north east of antioch. stephanie joins us live and one man said it was just raining fire. >> reporter: it's a bit eerie now because it's so quiet. homeowners have started to come back and also, one man just now trying to put out some of the hot spots here where you see smoldering. you can see this is the area where it was burning or started

these were the first two to go up. you cannot make out what these were. firefighters were called overnight to come back and put up hot spots as well. yesterday you can see just how big the flames got. how this was a wind field fire spreading quickly the fire destroyed at least seven mobile homes and danled six others and this morning people are keeping an eye out because they're worried about more damage caused by flair ups. >> it's scary because there's a lot of forest behind my house. >> fire investigators are determining on finding the cause

of the fires. one neighbor is saying these were actually for sale. it's absolutely devastating to the community but amazing how resilient they are. they're keeping a positive attitude and all they can think about is rebuilding. >> thank you, steph. we have new details in the death of a man in san francisco police custody. the man was also wanted for severely beating a senior citizen in sonoma county. the man got in a fight with two officers and walked away from the scene. both officers were hurt and had to go to the hospital. several more officers eventually hand cuffed that man. that's when police say he suffered some sort of medical emergency and stopped breathing. >> i viewed a video of that teen we have and it appears that the officers used a reasonable

amount of force until he was able to, until they were able to get him hand cuffed and stopped. >> police did call in paramedics and performed cpr but the man died at the scene. police say after the incident they learned he was wanted in the beating of a 97-year-old sonoma county man and he is not expected to survive. >> a new development in the mask case. a tentative ruling could cost the family millions of dollars. mercury news reports the judge is inclined to uphold previous findings that the oakland girl is dead. if that's the case it would limit the malpractice case to a few hundred dollars. her family accuses oakland children's hospital of ignoring their calls for a doctor and hounding them to donate their daughter's organs. >> thu this morning, dark
