crews have never seen anything like this. the rocky fire north of the bayrea burningvirtually f control. growing 20 acres in just five anything like this, rocky fire burning virtually out of control. growing 20 acres in just five hours. the plan to put it out. and a hero to the rescue, a deputy pulling the driver in the path of a caltrain out of the path of danger in the nick of time. >> announcer: were nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." a good tuesday morning it's 4020. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. lots to get to this morning. let's first heck that forecast with meteorologist kari hall. >> we start out now with the lower 60s across the bay and it's 64 degrees in the

livermore, san francisco already at 63 degrees and we're watching some clouds moving in, and interest there will be a slight cans that there could be a little bit of some light thing along the co-pacifica reaching 66 degrees, los gatos today 62 degrees and san francisco 70 degrees on the embarcadero in the north bay 80 degrees, in the napa, while oakland tops out at 73 and livermore reaching 81 degrees. another mild day across the bay. there could be a few changes as we head closer to the weekend. more on that coming in the microclimate forecast. how are the roads looking? >> so far looking grood today. in dublin west of el charro a little slowing coming in out of the altamonte pass. as we loo look at or speed sensors it nothing draks tick. starting to go from yellow to green out of the altamonte passing by west grant line road

and we are looking over toward the rest of the bay. no problems heading toward the san mateo bridge or on the peninsula. we begin now with the latest developments on the rocky fire. this morning tens of thousands of acres scorched as the flames still lingering on. right now that fire remains at just 12% containment. >> firefighters are now calling the quick spread of the rocky fire as historically unprecedented. at one point it grew 20,000 acres in just five hours. here is a look at where the fire is burning. evacuations are underway with more than 6300 structures threatened. but for maniless homes it was just too late. "today in the bay" kris sanchez has been following the story for us. what are we learning about this really tough fire fight this morning? >> reporter: laura, firefighters are using words like unprecedented, as you mentioned, and historical because the fire is so erratic and it continues to spread relatively unchecked. veteran firefighters say that part of the problem is that the

fire is burning where there have not been a fire in record history. the fire is voracious, continuing to grow and deny all efforts to contain it. though firefighters were able to hold the line at 12% containment, the fire continues to grow overnight and it jumped a fire line and it it was a big one. the flames spread across highway 20, winds pushing the fire north towards thousands of homes. cal fire says the fire driven by plumes rising up and when they create -- when had he fall they create new paths for that fire. >> once it gets heavy enough it just falls down and spreads the fire in all kinds of directions and that creates all kinds of challenges. >> for the missouri part this fire has a mind of its own. >> reporter: resources are pouring in, we told you about two air force reserve c-130s that are dropping water and fire restarred ent that are cycle through in 50 minutes time. that's on top of the 19 helicopters, four air tankers and 300 fire engines that are

already there in place. there are also more than 3,000 firefighters who are on the ground and they must be exhausted as they have been on this fire fight for six days now. the lake fire just one of many burning across the state right now. firefighters are being pushed to the brink as they battle 21 fires in total. several of them sparked by lightning. 9,000 firefighters out on the fire lines right now. the one near clear lake remains the largest. 134,000 acres of land total burning right now in california. we've posted a slide show of the fire fight on our website. you can see the challenges the crews are facing. all of this is on our front page at nbcbayarea.com. new this morning, flames closer to home now. firefighters battled this three alarm fire this san jose early this this morning. broke out at a barn east of william court near midnight. so far there are no reports of

injuries, crews were able to keep the flames to that barn. in had what could have been a fatality we move now to a dramatic rescue in sunnyvale. incredible video captured the moment the deputies pulled a man off the tracks just before a caltrain passed on by. a move that ultimately saved that man's life. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in sunnyvale with with a we're learning about that amazing rescue. it's hard to believe even watching it. >> reporter: this happened right over there over my shoulder at this caltrain crossing at mary and west evelyn avenues here in sunnyvale. you can see workers still repairing the signal equipment damaged during this collision. it was captured by more than one camera and posted to you tube. a driver who law enforcement believes was under the influence tried to beat a train across the

tracks, got caught by the crossing gate and sat there. fortunately for him two san mateo county transit deputies happened to be nearby, one ran down the tracks it to try to warn the train and the other went to the car. inside he found the driver. a man in his 20s conscious, but impaired, according to the deputies, and not getting himself out of harm's way. as you can see in this video one of the deputies dragged him from the vehicle and then a moment later the northbound 385 plowed into the front of the man's car, spinning it off the track. >> it was close, yeah. just glad that we were here because obviously it would have been a different result. >> reporter: and that was one of the deputies who pulled the man from the car. deputies did have to handcuff him, again, her looking into whether he was upped the influence of alcohol. the crash did delay service for about an hour. caltrain does not expect the work going on right now behind me to affect this morning's commute. reporting live in sunnyvale, bob redell, "today in the bay." a follow-up now at 4:36 to a

story we told you about yesterday. an suv suddenly accelerated after going through car wash. no you car wash lois say it wasn't the first timefemtime. the 1999 jep grand cherokee accelerated out of a car wash am in green bay over the weekend and across 101 all with a wash employee inside. he said the jeep was in knee tropical when it took off. people at other car washes have reported similar problems with that type of car. the chp says water may be short-circuiting the vehicle's electronics. >> we are to go research that indicates there may be a recall involving these vehicles. we did take the vehicle to be inspected by chp investigators. >> no word from jeep this morning. a source tells us the car wash is considering banning some jeep grand cherokees. a car wash back east has said a

similar move. heels burring is part of a list to offer free recycled water during the drought. people can get highly treated recycled water from the city's sewer treatment plants. it is only good for using on grand earns and land. until this year recycled water hadn't been used approximately this year. >> pretty soon we will be drinking recycled water as well. we have definitely in the tuesday state of mind right now of. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. >> it is looking good. we starting to see a few more clouds rolling in on shore and the cloud cover is all because of the moisture streaming in from tropical storm gillermode that's well to the west and continues to move towards hawaii. a very slight chance there could be sprinkles along the coast, maybe lightning. otherwise it stays mainly quite

all across the bay. lower 60s right now, into the afternoon highs reaching into the 70s and 80s. south bay 80 degrees, 81 in the north bay, east bay 72 while the tri-valley tops out at 83 and san francisco today look for a high of 69 degrees. i will have more on what to expect as we go through the week as we start a slow warming friend that's coming up in a few minutes. right now let's get a look at traffic with mike. we are looking at not a slow trend, that's good stuff, for fremont. this is 880 past the truck scales. heading south with lease headlights past mission boulevard let's take a look at your map. we do have an early morning crash westbound 237 that's circled there. it had your right two lanes blocked early morning just after 3:00 but there has been no real update. chp still reports being on scene there. don't see any slowing. the rest of your bay looks nice, no problems across the golden gate bridge or bay bridge.

the palo alto tens lpeninsula, smooth drive. happening right now, if you have to drive through palo alto this morning, a reroute might be in order. a busy intersection is closed to crews can install new traffic signals. this is new video of the area that we're talking about. several lanes of embarcadero -- of embarcadero road, i should say, near town and country village are going to be shut down until 7:00 this this morning. that is right near stanford stadium. traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction and there will be crews out there directing you if you get caught up in the crunch. if you are familiar with at that area you know it can get pretty crammed. the new signals prorpdly come with a new timing program. happening now -- no, you already read that one. >> we already talked about palo alto. silicon valley has long been suck in the stone ages when it

people are dead after a building collapsed in india. all new in morning, at least 11 people are dead after a building collapsed if india. right now india's national disaster response force is hz to save anyone trapped underneath the three-story building that's collapsed. all of this happening on the outskirts of mumbai. investigators right now looking into the cause of the collapse but reports say that authorities had previously declared that 50-year-old structure too dangerous to life? a construction company owner and a project manager will spend the next two years behind bars for the death of a worker in milpitas. the two men were sentenced after they were convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the death of raul zapata. he tied after a wall david in at a construction site in in 2012. it happened three days after city inspectors said the project wasn't rain because of recent rain. lawyers for an estranged couple in a fight over their

valley rising into the mid 60s. it won't be a very arm day, i think you will have for cloud cover in san francisco an eventually just maybe for an hour or two a couple spots hitting 70 degrees but mostly 60s throughout the day. the rest of the bay can expect mild weather, in san jose a little bit more sunshine, up to 80 degrees, palo alto 79 degrees, mission district at 67 degrees and the north bay healdsburg reaching 83 degrees, 73 had this oakland, pleasanton 82 degrees. the next couple days a little bit more cloud cover with some subtropical moisture rolling in. that unfortunately doesn't look to bring us any rain but there may be a couple of lightning strikes near the coast. into the day tomorrow a little bit more sunshine and then the temperatures start to warm up and that will be the trend heading into thursday as well. we've been tracking what's happening out there in the central pacific here is tropical storm guillermo that continues

to more close to go hawaii and that's what's bringing the clouds to us this morning. looks like that storm stays just to the north of hawaii which is great news, but may create some higher waves there. into the weekend highs will be topping out in the 70s and 80s, in san francisco highs right around 70 degrees and then elsewhere like the tri-valley it will be a little bit warmer as we head into sunday with a high of 86 degrees. to many people this summer heat sparks lots of get together, cookouts, tonight it also means community. thousands will rally for national night out as bay area leaders ban ogt to bring down crime. and a live look here, san mateo bridge moves very smooth ri. we will show you what's going on a little farther on the coast today. a little warning. and a live look outside right now, downtown san jose, one of the many cities that will

a live look outside at the bay bridge. lit brightly, cars are flowing, everything is in order on this tuesday morning. >> let's get the week going. it is 4:54. neighborhoods around the bay area getting ready for national night out. the annual event to fight back against crime. in san jose along 133 national night out events are scheduled for a evening. that's according to the sort of mayor sam liccardo. thousands are expected to take part, that includes the mayor and others am his office. across the u.s. close to 40 million people will participate in national night out events. >> it's really about safety and in martinez today bike safety will be the focus of a national night out give away. the group promises to hand out free bicycle helmets and lights. it happening at the chp office in martinez, it starts at 3:00 p.m. they will also do free child car seat inspections.
