"today in the bay's" bob redell live in san francisco this morning. bob, police say those suspects rammed an undercover officer's car while trying to get away on a chase that lasted several miles. >> reporter: fortunately, from what we're hearing, the police officer or officers doing okay, the chase ended behind me. that's clara street, alleyway there, between 4th and 5th street in the mission district. as you heard in the video, did

capture some of the chase this morning. this all started around 1:50 with a 911 call about a burglary in progress. 2200 block of sacramento street, 3 1/2 miles where we're at. undercover unit nearby, they responded. they spotted the getaway vehicle. the suspects used their get away vehicle to ram the police car and then take off. there was a police chase, as you mentioned. it went through mission district, ending here in the south of market. and the police did catch all three suspects from the overnight burglary. they arrested one man and two women. live here in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> you don't touch me, you don't touch me! >> police crossing the line? encounter between a north bay officer and a manes ka lates after the officer pulls out his gun. the whole thing caught on camera. now, an investigation is under way. newsroom this morning. what's the officer saying? >> nothing officially but you can hear him say plenty of things in the video posted a week ago with more than 715,000 views on facebook. to set the scene, a man is tying up his boat in front of his house when an officer pulls up, then this -- >> take your hand out of your pocket. >> i haven't done nothing. i've done nothing, to. >> seriously. >> put your gun down, really? >> it's unclear what the history is between the police and don mccomas. he's saying you have done enough to my family. the officer was in the neighborhood after getting a complaint about parking. the officer can be heard saying that mccomas should have listened to him in taking his hand out of his pocket. an auditor says that's true, if an officer gives a lawful order you're supposed to follow but adds, the video's trouble because tmessage the officer's sending is i will use this gun

for you to comply with the order. >> anything you want in public, with respect to police, as long as you don't interfere, you can record them. >> the city of rohnert park says it's taking the matter seriously and conducting an internal review to ensure the police officer followed right protocols. the city will revee protocols to make sure they're keeping police and community safe. mccomas did not want to talk on camera but did say that he has hired an attorney. l live in san francisco newsroom, stephanie chuang "today in the bay." follow-up to another story involving law enforcement. former san francisco deputy guilty of attacking a homeless man inside a hospital. they asked him to remove the homeless man because he had been verbally abusive. prosecutors say llewellyn grabbed and choked the man. he said the man started it all by attacking him with his cane but video showed the deputy was

the aggressor. he was convicted of assault and could face three years in prison. 6:03. east bay community remembering a recent high school grad gunned down walking on a hayward street. we first brought you this as breaking news yesterday morning. family, friends and former classmates gathered to honor the life of kionta murphy. the 17-year-old just graduated from mt. eden high where he was a wrestler and played football. his mother spoke about her son's dream. >> this isn't a man that was a hoodlum on streets. he wanted to be a marine and died for his country. he wanted to be for his country. and you took a life from us, from me and his father from his sister, prematurely! >> police say murphy jr. walking with a girl near morning side

drive 1:00 yesterday when they crossed paths with three young men. one of them opened fire killing murphy jr. the girl was not hurt. police say the suspects took off in a silver suv. there are no arrests in this case. so-called ghost guns weapons used in the murder/suicide in walnut creek. police say scott berdych, an engineering student on leave from stanford killed his former girlfriend at her parent's house. home for the summer from san diego state, investigators revealed that he made the guns out of parts ordered through the mail. they're called ghost guns because they don't have serial numbers and they can't be traced. police say there's no evidence suggesting the retailers who sold parts did anything illegal. we know more about what happened to the firefighter who died while trying to keep a wildfire from spreading in northern california. investigators say david rule died of carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation

battling the progress fire northeast of redding. the 38-year-old volunteer firefighter vanished thursday. his body found on the fire lines the next day. rule he was from south dakota. father of two was here to help california. developing right now, brave efforts from firefighters who are hoping today could be the turning point in that massive fire burning out of control near clearlake. that fire's now 20% contained and crews hope to gain more ground as the morning goes on. kris sanchez joining us now. making progress but we learned the number of homes and structured damaged jumped significantly overnight. >> the numbers are not good, neither is the news for schoolchildren. they are getting an extra week of summer vacation but for one of the worst reasons possible, of course. here are the latest numbers. 39 homes now confirmed burned, that is an increase over yesterday, 52 other structures destroyed. 7,000 are still under threat

according to lake county news. and the first day of school pushed back to august 18th because three schools in middle town are being used to house evacuees. the rocky fire continues to grow at what officials call an explosive rate. it is now closer to the town of clearlake, where summer vacationers have been replaced by the 13,000 evacuees, some of staying in tents. >> we could see the flames cresting up over the hill and coming into the back of the valley, that's when we decided we need to go. >> firefighters are seeing the fire create its own weather like this fire tornado that can suck in debris and shoot embers out for miles. it that erratic behavior the reason the fire's spread in many different directions as you can see on the map. the fire's 67,000 acres and 20% contained. firefighters don't expect to get much more of a break in the weather. we talked with meteorologist kari hall. it is supposed to be hotter

on a rule forcing companies to make those numbers known. the pay gap has gotten extra tension as workers from companies hole protests for raising the minimum wage. the s.e.c. considered because investors have problems with the pay difference. last year, ceos made more than 300 time as much as the average worker. there's a lot of dirty laundry in san francisco. we mean that literally. >> scott mcgrew, is there an app? laundry crisis, thanks to rich, young tech workers. >> there is an app. we'll get to that. this laundry crisis is a problem. laundromats are closing down because they can't afford the rent or in the case of this laundromat it may close down and be torn down to make way for a new condo complex. laundromat crisis. families able to hold on to their own and not get displaced have the very strange problem in san francisco of nowhere to do

their laundry. somebody mentioned that on twitter, six months ago there were three laundromats, now two one may be evicted. what happens when basic services can no longer afford the rent? to which he got the response, the cost of disruption. washeo and others removed the need for a laundromat on every block. in other words, it's no big deal. you can hire somebody to do your laundry. as you might imagine, this launched a debate with the check your privilege as one of the main themes. speaking of high prices, the "wall street journal" says chase will ease the terms of its jumbo mortgages. jumbo are mortgages that chase can't sell to the u.s. government because they're too big, bigger than $625,000. jumbo mortgages, or as we call them around these parts, regular mortgages.

time to check the microclimate forecast this morning. nice start to our day. city by the bay. a look at the forecast. >> it's clear. >> pretty. >> we're getting ready for warmer air, moving a lot of sunshine in that forecast today and tomorrow. but then friday more clouds rolling back in. every day changing, as we take a live look now at san jose we see a nice clear start and as we look at seven-day forecast temperatures will be going up the next couple of days, peaking on tomorrow and by friday we may have a couple of light sprinkles, some of you saw those light showers yesterday. now as you head, this is what you need to know. it is clear, mostly across the bay and slightly warmer. more sun, less clouds. and generally clear again tonight with the sunset at 8:11. temperatures are right around 60 degrees for most of the bay. but then as you head up toward the north bay, 52 degrees in santa rosa and napa. cool in spots.

what we're noticing here in the wind forecast, we start out with a calm wind but notice the direction of the arrows coming in for a northwesterly direction. with the shift in wind today that may cause more problem for the wildfires. for us it warms up temperatures we don't have a directly onshore flow but it does turn westerly into the evening as temperatures cool off. and then it goes back northerly as we go into tomorrow. also tracking tropical storm guillermo that continues to weaken. upper level winds are sheering out this storm. and it brought those clouds all the way to the bay area yesterday. but look at how far it is away from us. it is near hawaii at this point. and will continue on as a weak tropical storm the next couple of days. as it moves to the north of the hawaiian islands. today a high of 86 in los gatos, pacifica 73. sunset at 70 degrees. more sun, waking up to clouds right now.

it will be 78 degrees in healdsburg, walnut creek, 86. livermore high of 86. but then as we head toward the weekend we may have some warmer air moving in. really warms up as we head towards sunday. tomorrow, once again, peak of that heat. more on that coming up in a few minutes. let's see how traffic is moving with mike. >> good morning. let me previous face this saying the bay area moving smoothly, light so far, except san jose. one key spot north wound 101 crash, approaching the camera shot. southbound side, the exit sign says tully road one mile away, you see the video. that's where it's jammed up. from a few minutes ago we had the crash scene. the truck on its side and the flatbed tow truck. they cleared the truck. look at speckel of debris around the area. there are bolts across the roadway, trying to clear that up to prevent punctured tires. that will remain with the backup. you have your jam from 680 where we had the live camera down

authorities believe that plane likely crashed in the east indian ocean back in march of lastier. was headed from beijing to kuala lumpur with 240 people on board. time to check the microclimate forecast now. take a peek outside. sun's arrival over the bay area making for a nice day. >> makes it easier to get through the middle of the workweek. when we wake up and see the sunshine, it's around 60 across most of the bay. north bay cool 52 degrees now. highs reaching 84 degrees in the south bay. 81 in the peninsula. east bay 78 degrees and we'll also have more of those temperatures that will be a little bit warmer than yesterday. so mainly clear start to the day. less clouds than yesterday. by sunset, temperatures will be turning a little bit cooler before we warm up tomorrow. we've reached the peak of the heat before more clouds move in

friday. may give us showers before the weekend. i'll talk about that what to expect, coming up in a few minutes. mike. >> they're not flowing in one key south bay spot. let me show you why. first, video where we have this overturned truck that crash started thing off southbound 101, just north of tully road. down to one lane at the time this video was taken. down to no lanes southbound now. a lot of debris from the crash. they've closed all lanes to clear the debris. bolts reported there, they don't want to puncture tires. slowing northbound approaching that speculator slowing as well. a crash on the north side as well, past tully. that's the big jam. the rest of it smooth. not a lot of slowing for 680 for tri-valley or east bay. mild build toward toll plaza. southbound 101 approaching tully because of the crash, all lanes.

someone wrote "lion killer!" across the garage door. palmer has been in hiding since news of cecil's killing spread. iowa, taco bell closed for some deep cleaning, while two men facing charges of running a meth lab out of the fast food joint. cedar rapids police called to the restaurant early yesterday on reports of a suspicious person lingering outside of the restaurant. officers found a taco bell employee and another man in the back of the building and inside signs of a meth lab in a utility area. the restaurant is being sanitized. pg&e fighting back. asking a federal judge to dismiss seven of the 28 counts file against the company for the deadly san bruno gas explosion. the bay area news group reporting the court is considering the request. pg&e facing nearly $2 billion in fines. explosion killed eight people

there's a bit of good news, firefighters say they are slowly making progress. today show's joe fryer in lake county following the fire for several days now. we've learned the acreage has grown but positive signs here? >> reporter: yeah, positive sign. the cooler weather making a different. the acreage did go up to 68,300 but flames spreading at a slower rate when you consider how quickly they grew over the weekend. firefighters hope to stay on the offensive today. but we are expecting hotter, drier weather so that could create challenges when you consider how erratically the fire has been behaving. this morning, 1400 people under mandatory evacuation and unclear when they might be able to return home. we've learned number of destroyed homes has gone up from 24 to 39. that's not because of new fire activity. it's because crews got into the burned out areas and got a better look at the damage. across california right now,

warmer. as we get a view from ocean beach, you see a few clouds in the distance. temperatures are around 60 degrees for most of us waking up. but in the north bay it's 52 degrees in santa rosa and napa. notice by the wind direction arrows here, it shows that the wind is coming in from the northwest. now yesterday it was straight onshore. coming from the west. so we won't have that breezy wind and it only picks up to 15 miles an hour today. so it won't be as strong as yesterday. but that allows heat to build. and a great day, though, spend out at oakland at the a's game. first pitch it will be 73 degrees. it starts to warm up but 76 degrees isn't bad for the fifth inning by the end of the game, more sunshine and 70 grease. highs reaching 83 degrees today in san jose. pacifica tops out at 73. 71 in the mission district, outer sunset at 70. na napa, 79. 77 oakland. pleasanton reaching 87 degrees.

we're also keeping an eye on tropical storm guillermo. it's far away, but had an impact on our weather yesterday with those clouds rolling in. into the next couple of days, north of hawaii. but we can see the connection of the winds, all of the clouds across the pacific in through southern california. for us and another system moving in by friday, giving us a chance of showers. most of that stays in the sierra. there may be lightning across the bay. but something to watch before we head into theened and weather quiets back down. look at microclimates, not a huge swing in temperatures. 70 and 80s across the bay. make plans to get outside. sunday will be the warmer of the two days this weekend. another look at weather coming up in a few minutes. let's check in with mike. >> slowest spot for the bay here in san jose, looking at just north of the incident but southbound 101, sign, barely make it out, tully road one mile down. one mile of backup slowing to the scene of the crash.

let me show you the map. what's going on, you have two lanes blocked, should be reopening a third lane here. southbound jammed up approaching tully. earlier crash cleared. northbound side has spectator slowing. we've seen a couple of fender benders. the whole corridor for 101. look the rest of the south bay, just starting with your build there 87's a good alternate and king. the other bigger issue for the bay, westbound 24, right past that lafayette off-ramp a crash blocking much of the off-ramp. distraction off the walnut creek interchange. no problem. crash in san pablo clearing quickly. down toward the bay bridge toll plaza which is a mild backup considering metering lights are on. >> you don't touch me. you don't touch me. >> policing or crossing the line? encounter between an officer and manes ka lates after the officer pulls out his gun. the whole thing caught on camera. now an investigation is under way. independent police auditor says it is troubling the officer pulled a gun to get a citizen to comply with an order. mccomas didn't want to talk on camera but hired an attorney. that video has gone viral. since our morning show began at 4:30 it's been viewed almost 40,000 times making the total 750,000 just about on facebook alone. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." 6:52. contra costa county d.a. office inspector under investigation after police say he shot a suspect near the oakland airport. police say it happened at hilton airport hotel monday night. two inspectors trying to arrest a man when shots were fired. the suspect reportedly pulled out a gun and that's when the district attorney's inspector fired hitting him. the suspect is not being identified yet but said to be in critical condition. final warning, hayward's fire chief told to clean up his act or out of a job.

the city served the chief a month-long suspension for issues involving alcohol. an investigation revealed he drove city vehicles under the influence at least four different times. he also got into a physical fight with a subordinate. in march the chief allegedly drank while on a call and did not respond to a significant fire. yesterday he apologized. >> it's incredibly embarrassing for myself, fire department, community, a dedicated public servant to this community and i plan on winning back that trust through the same effort that i've put in through the last 20 years. >> the chief cannot take city vehicles home for a year and is no long ar howed to drink alcohol while in uniform or at city functions. he also took a 9% pay cut. corruption at san francisco's city hall? the attorney for known chinatown gangster raymond "shrimp boy" chow says there's evidence of dirty politics happening in the city at highest levels.

curtis briggs says the fbi was investigating his client and former state senator leyland lee, undercovering as proved some current politicians are guilty of mistuck. wiretaps reveal mayor ed lee took bribes, a claim that the mayor says is untrue. but briggs says the fbi should be going after lee. he outlined the alleged corruption in a motion that he filed yesterday. >> some of the other people here were pretty culpable and didn't get indicted. >> a legal long shot because "shrimp boy" is not saying he's innocent but saying he should be dismissed from the case because he's the only one being prosecuted. >> that was former prosecutor steven clark, saying it's unlikely that this court will dismiss the case against chow. a teenager behind bars, accused of hit-and-run that sent a 4-year-old to the hospital. police say it happened on la nei avenue last night. the 16-year-old hit the child,

then kept going. officers caught up with the teen. the child is said to be okay and treated at the hospital. after two week search, the family of a missing bay area teacher say his body's been found. ed cavanaugh last seen riding his motor bike in the forest. a member of the family search effort found the body yesterday. the 45-year-old a well-liked teacher in san francisco. taught wilderness and survival skills. but needed regular insulin medication. the family released a statement saying, ed has touched so many lives and countless ways. we hope all who loved ed find comfort in knowing that his bright spirit is with us all during this heartbreaking time. >> sex offender just released from prison is back in jail this morning. police say he was discovered naked near a preschool. 41-year-old parolee randy smith arrested in fairfield yesterday. an employee of a community center on kentucky street says

workers found smith make itted in a bathroom stall. he was discovered before a preschool at that center was about to open police say smith did not come into contact with any children. 6:55. los angeles taxi drivers waging a bitter battle against uber that's led to scathing accusations. taxi drivers dug up the records of l.a. uber drivers and found at least four have criminal convictions, including manslaughter and dui, that would make them ineligible for the l.a. taxi permit. "the l.a. times" says it verified the claims. the times says criminal history came to light in a binder of court records of uber drivers cited at l.a.x. battling to keep uber from getting a piece of the taxi business. an environmental health group plans to ask b.a.r.t. to inspect hundreds of train cars. looking for asbestos. according to "the chronicle," the train cars built by the same
