republicans in congress are renewing their effort to defund planned parenthood. democrats and liberties are calling it a war on women. what could be the cons fences for the republicans and democrats in the upcoming 2016 national election. we talked with larry gerston. >> like a smoldering volcano. the use of federal funds for planned parenthood is always simmering no matter what for these pro life folks. it is a tough issue for them. the latest eruption stems from videos where planned parenthood leaders discussed selling post-abortion fetus parts to researchers. pro life republicans in congress says this is a callus disregard for life. they want congress to stop funding planneded parenthood to put this issue behind them once and for all.
7:48 am
>> that's a very strong position but also a historical part of the gop's position. planned parenthood defenders deny these claims that they were selling fele tall tissue and that fetal tissue is legal albeit in a small amount of states. what else are the defenders saying? >> they are saying the facts aren't like the republicans say. the videos have been edited, twisted, if you will. they don't really reflect the goal of putting post abortion parts in the hands of researchers that need them. they point out that $500 million congress gives annually to planned parenthood provides much more than just abortions, mammograms, women's health issues, all kind of things that mostly poor women need. all 2.7 million women use these

benefits annually. >> put this into perspective as far as the 2016 election goes. are we going to see this become a corn a corner sto a cornerstone issue between the democrats and republicans? >> abortion is what experts call a wedge issue. it always separates republicans from republicans, democrats from democrats. people are really upset one way or the other. most republican candidates for president as we would expect have vowed to eliminate federal funding for planned parenthood. some have gone so far as to say they would rather shut down the federal government than pass a budget with that kind of funding. for their part, the other side of the story here, the democrats, all the democrats running for president are pro-choice. they insist on funding. there is a big difference here. >> just this week, louisiana bobby jindal said, under president jindal, january 17th,
7:50 am
the department of justice and irs and everybody else we can send from the federal government, will be going into planned parenthood. do you think this issue goes beyond the beltway and starts to become a part of the candidate's platforms? >> jindal and others said that again at the debate. this remains very hot with those candidates. whether it becomes an issue depends on a couple of things here. this could draw a lot of attention downstream. we know three important things. first, traditionally, a gender gap where democrats receive about 10% more votes from women than men in any presidential election. in 2012, that gap was a whopping 18%. second, women vote more than men by a 54-46 majority. you have the gap and women voting more. finally, third, according to the latest polls, guess what? women want congress to fund planned parenthood by a whopping
7:51 am
margin of almost 2-1. put those together. a lot of other issues. the extent to which the republicans can go ahead and leave that effort to defund planned parenthood, it could generate a tremendous amount of momentum, not only for them but also for democrats who, yes, will pounce on this as another example of the war on women. >> larry, as always, thank you for your time. stay with us. we'll be right back. this out. with xfinity home
