it's monday, august 10th. coming up on "early today," shots fired in ferguson on the one-year anniversary of the shooting of unarmed teenager michael brown. breaking details overnight. donald trump continues to change the political equation with his outspoken and controversial comments. an nfl hall of famer has passed away. frank gifford has died. that and much more. "early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm melissa rehberger. we begin with breaking news out of ferguson, missouri. multiple shots were fired during a protest overnight. sunday marked the one-year anniversary the death of michael brown. the unarmed teen was shot and killed by a white police officer. right now, we know at least one

st. louis county police officer was involved in a shooting after reportedly coming under heavy gunfire. at least one person was taken to the hospital. st. louis police held a news conference just moments ago. >> well, this is a tragedy for the family of this man and certainly for the officers involved, and it is truly a tragedy. there is a small group of people out there that are intent on making sure that we don't have peace that prevails. i don't know how else to say that, but that is just -- that's just the bottom line on this, and that is unfortunate. >> the st. louis police department tweeted this photo of a bullet hole in the windshield of a vehicle. according to police two unmarked cars took shots. nbc's jay gray is live in ferguson right now. jay, what more can you tell us this morning? >> reporter: we know 40 to 50 shots were fired, according to police, melissa.

just behind officers watching over what was a peaceful protest at the time. the chief of the st. louis county police describes how it happene happened. >> a lot of emotions. i get it. we can't sustain this as a community. we have other individuals armed right now. they are part of this group. we need the publics' help. we can't do it by ourselves. we have to have a community out here working with us and identify this to make it stop. >> reporter: a small group, as he described, not protesters, quick to point that out. he calls them criminals. they initially were apparently firing at one another. one man police detectives have been following turned his attention to the police vehicle, opened fire, they chased him, opened fire and wound up in the hospital critical and unstable

condition. we know two businesses were burglarized overnight. one police officer treated after he was hit with a brick. two others were sprayed by pepper spray by some in the crowd. uneasy tension here. we'll continue to monitor. for now, back to you. >> jay gray, thank you very much. days after the high profile gop debate, donald trump is once again stirring controversy. he is refusing to apologize for comments he made this weekend about moderator megyn kelly and trump's rivals are lining up to criticize him. nbc's brian moore joins us from washington. what exactly did trump say this time. >> reporter: what he said might be open to interpretation, but it has donald trump in a very familiar place -- on defense. fresh controversy and a familiar response from republican front-runner donald trump. >> i apologize when i'm wrong but i haven't been wrong. i said nothing wrong. >> reporter: trump, on defense for marks about fox debate moderator megyn kelly. >> you could see there was blood

coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her -- wherever. >> reporter: trump says he didn't mean the anchor was hormonal but finding no sympathy from his fellow gop candidates. >> they were completely inappropriate and offensive comments. period. >> reporter: trump wants to change the conversation and so do his rivals. >> if i comment on everything he says, my whole campaign will be consumed by it. >> it's up to me to tell people about me and not be worried about somebody else. >> reporter: this latest controversy isn't helping trump's run for the white house but it's not clear whether it's hurting him in the polls. overnight survey conducted for nbc news shows that even many of trump's supporters believe he flopped in the debate. but, melissa, he still is leading the pack this morning. >> brian moore, thank you. this morning, the sports world is mourning the loss of an nfl icon. player and broadcaster frank gifford. nbc's willie geist reports.

>> reporter: his southern california good looks just as easily could have taken him to hollywood. but frank gifford was a football player. all-american at usc. first round pick of the new york giants. eight pro bowls. the 1956 most valuable player of the nfl. the hall of famer caught a touchdown pass in the giants dramatic overtime loss to the baltimore colts in the 1958 nfl championship game which earned the title the greatest game ever played. gifford's career was put on hold for nearly two years after an infamous hit he took from chuck bednarik from the philadelphia eagles. he returned from a head injury and made another pro bowl before retiring in 1964. frank's charm made him a popular choice for advertisers. >> nothing like them. >> a familiar face in popular culture. >> where are you from? >> bakersfield, california, john. >> reporter: in a raucous "monday night football" group where he was joined by howard cosell and dandy don meredith.

gifford spend 27 years on the show. in 1986, gifford made his wife kathie lee, a beloved member of our nbc family, with whom he has two children. >> congratulations. >> and these have been recycled yet again. we are green around here. thank you, sweetheart. thank you! >> cheers. after a standoff saturday night six children and two adults were found dead in a houston, texas home. officers were called to the home after 9:00 p.m. on saturday after seeing a body of a child through the window. officers went in the house and discovered eight bodies. the suspect 48-year-old david connolly was taken into custody after firing a gun when officers entered, they discovered that connolly had an outstanding warrant for aggravated assault and the motive appears to be related to a dispute with connolly's former domestic pattern according to officials. the epa is coming under fire

after causing a toxic spill in colorado. more than 3 million gallons of trace water containing trace amounts of led and arsenic into the river. crews broke an outside wall of an old goal mine causing the water inside it to spill into the river. the waste now stretches into new mexico. more than 200 miles from where it started. residents are understandably upset. >> it makes me want to cry. i mean, it's a disaster here. >> and epa official claims no evidence of harm so far but people in that area get drinking water from wells and have reported water discoloration. here is nbc meteorologist domenica davis. >> we're looking at cooler temperatures on the west coast. it's not cooler down to the south. once again the heat is continuing. this is a look at the heat index for the next three days.

we saw it in a lot of places around the gulf. heat indexes as high as 115. that will be the case, again. as triple digits heat indexes in parts of little rock, even memphis today will make it up to 111 for the feels like temperature. we're looking at actual air temperatures in the triple digits. yes, that will continue. much cooler, though, off to the west coast. seattle 86 degrees. still warm in boise and salt lake city they'll be in the 90s but san francisco 68. so monsoonal moisture coming through the rockies as well. we'll see it today and tomorrow west coast. we'll see 70s and 80s. and that's a look at your monday

privately-led search on saturday. the boys were reported missing when they didn't return from a fishing trip on july 24th. through a family spokesperson, they said, in part, we love our boys and want them home. today, our hope becomes our prayer that one day perry and austin will be returned to us. the u.s. coast guard officially suspended their search at sunset this past friday. in los angeles, yesterday, police car chased this car that was missing a tire for more than 70 miles over several freeways. the pursuit finally ended when the axle worn down. bringing that car to a halt. the driver suspended to police soon afterwards. taiwan is cleaning up after a typhoon that hit the island nation on saturday and turning roads into rivers. six people were killed when 185 people were injured. the storm is now sweeping through china and has been downgraded to a tropical storm. in eastern indiana, at least ten people were killed in a

stampede outside of a hindu temple during a religious festival. last thursday, two teenagers in clairmont, california, were struck by lightning knocking them to the ground. but miraculously, they were unharmed. a passer-by reportedly seeing lightning hit them. their doctor believes the fact they were holding hands probably saved them because it's diffused the electrical current. wow. the first family left for a 17 day vacation. over the weekend the top order of business for the president was golf. he hit the links with larry davis. good morning, landon dowdy. >> good morning. hillary clinton will unveil a plan to make college for affordable and reduce student debt, which has come to $1 trillion. states would have to increase their spending on higher education to secure federal funds. students wouldn't have to take out loans to attend public schools. the plan is estimated to cost $350 billion over ten years. apple may take the wraps off a new iphone next month. reports the company will hold an event on september 9th. the iphone is expected to have a

breaking news out of ferguson, missouri. sunday marks the first anniversary of the death of mierk michael brown. police say the shootings involved criminals and not the protesters who were simply expressing their first amend rights overnight. according to st. louis county police four officers are on administrative leave after coming under heavy gunfire. at least one suspect was taken to the hospital. according to police chief that a man is in critical condition after a remarkable exchange of gunfire. a news conference was held about an hour ago where police asked for the publics' help. >> a lot of emotions. i get it.
