separate investigations. we know at least one of them is a shooting involving a police officer. and a those are the sounds of ferguson one year since the death of michael brown in missouri. the shooting also involved the police. cooler air rolls into the bay area for the start of the workweek. more on that coming up in the microclimate forecast. >> and i'm anthony slaughter in for mike inouye this morning. we do have a serious accident that has closed down the entire highway, we will let you know when and where it reopen coming up in just a moment. thank you for joining us on a busy monday morning. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. we begin with that breaking news in san jose where a neighborhood is evacuated and a police manhunt underway. >> let's go straight to "today in the bay" damian trujillo who

is live on the northeast part of the city. >> reporter: it's still an active seen so far, the police helicopter just arrived above, it's shining a spotlight on one of the homes that police officer are looking for one suspect. sources tell me this may have been an officer-involved shooting as well, the second one in the last 9 1/2 hours here in san jose and it may have involved a shotgun. the s.w.a.t. team is here from san jose pd along with k-9 units and a couple of snipers, also some other technical operations are underway that we cannot reveal at this point for officers' safety reasons, but this also coincides with what happened last night. last night at around 6:30 p.m. a call came in about a man being stabbed on the east side of san jose near 34th street. police say they spotted a suspect a short while later and a couple of blocks away. now, according to police officers they feared for their lives and fired their weapon. the suspect died from those gunshot wounds from san jose

police. that was earlier yesterday about 6:30 p.m. right here now still an active scene, the police helicopter is again shining a spotlight on one of the homes here, a couple of homes have been asked to evacuate here on san marcos drive and san marcos court, another home has been asked to shelter in place with an officer placed inside that home for tear safety as well. so still a fluid situation, we will thing you the latest as it develops. i'm damian trujillo. we do continue to follow this story as it develops. damian is going it provide us with another live report coming up if this half an hour. >> you can get all the latest information on all of our digital platforms. new this morning a deadly shooting investigation is underway in had union city. police say that's where a man was shot dead near 13th and i streets last night. the victim was outside a home with a group of people when two suspects started firing into the crowd there. the gunfire hit the victim and he died. so par police have not released

a description of the suspects. at 5:02 a developing story right now. violence erupting amid protests in ferguson, missouri, overnight. scary scenes there as gunshots ring out last night during protests marking one year since michael brown was shot and killed by a police officer. officers responded with force, shooting and critically injuring a man during those commemorations. police say that there were two more shootings last night in the same area following a mostly peaceful day of protests. for protests are planned for later today. we will follow the story all morning long, including a live report from ferguson in roughly 40 minutes. more breaking news this morning. this time in san leandro where businesses burned nearly to the ground. take a look at the flames this morning as tall as the building itself. firefighters forced to keep their distance. >> this is happening near marina boulevard and doolittle drive

very close to 880. we know at least two businesses are damaged and firefighters had to call for backup three times. >> "today in the bay" chuck coppola live in san leandro where the crews controlled the flames about 30 minutes ago, but it's impacting traffic this morning as well, chuck. >> reporter: it is. we're just a little bit to the west of interstate 880 and traffic is blocked off here at doolittle and marina. i want to show you the scene behind me here at this strip mall, firefighters are still on the roof of this one story strip mall, there are about a handful of businesses there, but this is proving to be a very stubborn tire because every once in awhile there will be a hot spot that pops through the roof and flames will be shooting out. we've seen it happen for the last 10 or 15 minutes or so, about three or four times. so though they are moving -- you might be able to see behind us there -- some firefighters on to the roof and then behind that over toward the left there is another aerial tiller truck, aerial firefighting unit that is

spraying water on the black of the complex here. this is all happening it at the marina supermarket which is at the corner of marina and doolittle, that's where the fire is believed to have started and the fire then spread to another business, the thrifty medical supply. i spoke to the co-owner of that business this morning just a few moments ago who told us of his losses. >> i see that the roof is david in a little bit, but it seems like most of the damage has happened here at the marina part. so we are praying to god that, you know, the building is at least salvageable at this point. >> do you have fire insurance? >> yes, we do, thank god. >> reporter: this was the scene a little bit earlier when some 50 firefighters showed up to the scene. they brought 16 trucks here, a big response. they didn't want this this thing to spread. as it was there was quite a bit of concern that it might spread to an apartment complex at the

rear so consequently a number of units there were evacuated. we don't know how many people are out of their apartments but we are told that they are still out of their apartments at this hour. as far as the traffic scene here goes, we are told that this area will be closed for some time, probably midmorning, it may be noon before this entire area is clear. the advice is for drivers who are traveling along marina or hoping to travel along marina take davis as an alternative. i'm chuck coppola, "today in the bay." several businesses having to pick up the pieces this morning. we move now to a developing story. it's kind of like a game of whack a mole only the stakes much higher. as firefighters getting a handle on the huge fire burning in lake county another one pops up ten miles away. this latest fire is being called the jerusalem fire. fire officials say it started just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. so far it has burned more than 3,000 acres. right now there is a mandatory evacuation order in place for

homes in the jerusalem valley area east of spruce road and it's not clear how many people are affected by that order. this fire just off of highway 29 south of clearlake. firefighters say it's creeping closer to the very tough rocky fire which is only ten miles away. >> we don't have an estimate for the potential growth of the fire or the physical of acres, but it is slowly moving towards the southeast corner of the rocky fire. >> right now cal fire is shifting its resources from the 70,000 acre rocky fire to the jerusalem fire. we are learning more about the death of a firefighter on the front lines of a different wildfire. the u.s. forest service says late saturday night they lost one of their own. michael hallenbeck was hit and killed by a tree white battling the sierra fire. the 21-year-old was from shingle springs. the fire is a small one burning in a remote area near the el dorado national forest. nbc news spokes with one of

hallenbeck's colleagues. >> this is is something that we absolutely hate to see and unfortunately i have to announce this today, it's some of the worst news i have ever had to deliver in my professional career. >> governor brown issued this this statement saying, this tragedy reminds us of the dangers firefighters face every time they suit up. >> and this tragic death coming just a little over a week after another firefighter died in northern california. this morning a memorial service and funeral will be held in rapid city, south dakota, for david ruhl. he was scouting ways to fight that frog fire near the oregon border, a wind shift caused him to be trapped by flames. ruhl was interest south dakota, he was a father of two who was here to help out on the front lines in california. we're going to continue to follow the wind fires burning across the state, you can track them on our website or app. download it for your iphone or android device. a different kind of police search for an escapee in

fremont. this one has a happy ending. this morning a police dog who went on the lamb is safe at home again. the german shepherd named mico is just a rookie. he had just started working for the treatment police department when he koom off from his kennel over the weekend. >> he probably wanted to go exploring, he found somehow he got confused or disoriented or lost. >> officers found nico in a san jose creek hiding behind bran name lane yesterday. the pup seemed pretty happy to see his fellow officers. he is being checked out to make sure he is okay before he heads back to the academy. we know the fire activity has been a real issue for the state here. very close attention now to wind speeds this morning as firefighters try to deal with those. >> let's check am with meteorologist kari hall who has that and more. >> it will be a breezy day, but temperatures will be cooler, too, so that may help out just a little bit and a the humidity going up. as you head out today coastal

clouds with clear skies inland and becoming mostly sunny and once again a cooler day across the bay. mostly clear skies as we go into the evening, sunset will be at 8:05. these days are getting shorter and fast. it is now 61 degrees in hayward, napa 51 degrees, san francisco it is now 60 degrees with highs reaching the upper 60s in san francisco, in redwood city 79 eggs did, los gatos today 85 degrees, in the north bay, tiburon tops out at 79 degrees, walnut creek 89 and in the tri-valley livermore sees a high of 84 degrees. so temperatures today once again a little bit cooler but we start the warming trend as we go towards the end of the week. i will talk more on that coming up in just a few minutes. let's see how the roads are moving. it's a monday and of course that really doesn't always go well, but this morning we to want to keep you up to speed with something that's happening in san jose. there's a very serious accident, 101 southbound, this is northbound, lanes moving without a problem, but on the southbound

"today in the bay." 5:14. a new study finds people with strong spiritual and religious beliefs tend to cope better with cancer. researchers interviewed 44,000 people with cancer about their spirituality, religious behaviors and church traditions. patients who experienced greater emotional aspects of religion reported fewer symptoms along with less anxiety and depression. church attendance, prayer and meditation alone did not benefit physical health. white bread may harm you in more ways than just your waist line. new research is shows eating too many highly processed foods could raise the risk of

depression in older women. the study involved more than 70,000 women aged 50 to 79. researchers found an association between refined carbohydrates and depression. luckily the opposite was also true, so those who ate lots of whole grains, vegetables and fruits appeared to see their risk for depression drop. when it comes to car insurance for young people being independent can definitely cost you. a new study finding it's cheaper for young adults to stay on their parents' auto insurance plan than to get their own policy is. parents with an 18-year-old on their policy pay an average of 77% more than they would without a teen. that's a lot. but on average it's still cheaper than if your child bought insurance on their own. >> that is a tricky time i'm not looking forward to. >> you have a few years. verizon a dropping the entire idea of phone contracts, but with it those cheap upgrades. >> how they were never cheap technically, scott mcgrew. >> you were paying one way or the other, weren't you? the industry called them

lunger. fallen hayward police officer's family there to see it all. >> it means the world to me. ever since the a's came to oakland i've been an a's fan and always brought the kids here. >> the oakland a's law enforcement day saw sergeant lunger's father throw out a ceremonial first pitch to rickey henderson. >> we came to a lot of games here and the kids just grew up with it and my son just cherished the thought of rickey henderson playing, he just loved him, his favorite player and he got so excited when he got up to bat. >> lunger was killed if the line of duty last month. his daughters touched by the support. >> i can't even put it into words. it's -- it's an unreal experience, it means everything and more to my sister and i and we know dad is looking down on us just so jealous right though and i know it means the world to him. >> for a's fans who watched them face the houston astros this was something special, too. >> i'm always out here but that was another reason i came today,

north bay and san francisco is now at 60 degrees. highs today reaching 81 degrees, a lot of sunshine in the peninsula and for the north bay a high of 80 degrees, a breezy day in san francisco, 69 degrees east bay, 72 degrees with skies clearing, a lot more sunshine today and 87 degrees in the tri-valley. so we will be warming up this in a few spots. mostly sunny skies once again. a look at the wind direction coming this from the northwest, turning more westerly today. winds picking up to about 15 to 20 miles an hour, so a nice little breeze all throughout the afternoon and that brings in this our natural air conditioning. so highs today in the mid 80s for the south bay, 70s along the coast and 80s inland. as we go into the next few days this area of low pressure sitting just offshore brings us the strong on-shore flow so once again no changes inner our temperatures, at least not warming up until the end of the week. so now we turn our attention to hurricane hilda that is moving

closer to hawaii and the wind speeds at 100 miles an hour. so this storm is fortunately expected to weaken over the next couple of days as it approaches hawaii by the end of the week. here at home we're looking at highs in the 70s, trending into the lower 80s by the middle of the week. san francisco reaching up to 70 degrees on wednesday and no major warm up in the forecast at least in the near term. let's get a look at traffic now with anthony. this morning we do have some unfortunate thus in san jose is. this is 101 we've been telling you about all morning. 101 southbound is closed at tully. you can see those are the cars moving on southbound lanes which get to tully, crews have diverted you off the highway and you can get back on, but otherwise southbound lanes 101 at tully because of an earlier fatal accident. there you can see on the maps the red tee those the slowing and once you get to tully you do have to get off of the highway. over toward the altamonte pass typical build we see here. no major accidents as we take you outside just a typical

out of alabama after a violtatt coming out of alabama after a violent attack that left a city mayor hospitalized. it happened saturday in talladega, alabama. mayor larry barton tells nbc news someone he knows beat him with a sawed off baseball bat. he says his attacker is a hand he once hosted a radio show with who was wearing a hood that barton managed to tug off during the attack. for though police will only say

they arrested a man who is expected to be charged today, but here is the capper, the birmingham news reports that there may be a sex tape out there involving barton and his attacker's wife. doctors expect barton to recover fully. from the bizarre to the bizarre. yet another outrageous stunt for a tv star steve o. only this time it landed had him in jail. last time he climbed a massive construction crane in hollywood with an inflatable wail and sign protecting sea world. at one point police say he set off fireworks from the top of the crane. emergency crews showed up not knowing if he needed to be rescued. eventually steve o. climbed down on his own and police then arrested him. a tortoise named boris has a much better life ahead of him thanks to a vet. a 3-d printing store and swruler in this colorado. they created a facial prosthetic to relays his beak and upper jaw. the 3 pound turtle was hurt when

firegh breaking news now. flames two stories tall an explosion in san leandro. firefighters forced to call for backup as the flames spread. and in the south bay two crime scenes, two separate investigations. san jose police are involved in two separate incident overnight, at least one of them actually now confirmed both of them

latest. we know that there is someone who has a gun and is not in custody. >> reporter: yeah, and we have confirmed that it is another officer-involved shooting here in san jose. apparently from the press release just issued by san jose police a woman called and said her brother was intoxicated and had a gun. when officers arrived at the saw the man with a with a shotgun and fired several rounds at him. they are still looking for him at this point. they have evacuated a couple of ohms here and asked at least one home to shelter in place over on san marcos drive and surrounding streets here in san jose. the s.w.a.t. team is here, the k-9 units are here, also some other technical teams are also here to see if they can see where this person is, in fact, right now. this search coincides with what happened last night in san jose at around 6:30 p.m. a call came in about a hand being stabbed on the east side of san jose along 34th street. police say they spotted a suspect and a short while later and a couple of blocks away.

now, according to police, officers feared for their lives and fired their weapons. the suspect died from the gunshot there. that was, again, earlier yesterday in in san jose on 34th street. here on san marcos drive police have been busy with their tactical operation, looking for this pan who apparently had a shotgun. according to some police scanner traffic they recovered the shotgun with a live round in that shotgun, but again we haven't confirmed that information officially because police have not come out here and spoken to us at this point. we are standing by live and will bring you the latest as it develops, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." we are going to continue this story as it develops. damian will have another live report coming up in a half hour as we learn more information. throughout the day you can get the latest on all of our digital platforms. more breaking news now, businesses burn overnight in the east bay. take a look at the flames. it seemed like a regular building fire at first but then there was an explosion that caused firefighters to kick it

into high gear. >> crews are still on scene there, it's happening near marina boulevard and doolittle drive very close to 880. we know at least two businesses have been damaged and firefighters had to call for backup three times. >> "today in the bay" chuck coppola is live in san leandro where crews controlled the flames just about an hour ago, but do they have any idea of how it started in the first place, chuck? >> reporter: we are not sure. they do have the upper hand on had this clearly and got that upper hand some time ago, had they are still mopping up, but they have been out here for more than three hours though fighting this fire. it has destroyed two businesses, the marina supermarket and thrifty medical supply, two businesses destroyed. the battalion chief alan evans told me this was a particularly hazardous early on and still remains very stubborn. >> early on in the fire first arriving units they had an explosion that blew out the front portion of the building. the actual cause of the explosion we don't know. it was significant.

where the building is leaning a little bit towards the road now, it blew a plot of debris out into the roadway as they were setting up on their fire operations >> there has been a number of hot spots, tell us about that and how stubborn they are. >> yeah, so this is an old building, a lot of hidden fires. the roof has been reroofed on top of the old roof so there is a lot of voids and we are finding a lot of fires still in those voids and in between the rooflines. >> reporter: in fact, 50 a firefighters responded to this fire, fortunately none of them has been injured in this fire. three businesses spared in this strippel mall, veronica's coffee shop and empire hair and nails and the smoke shop. marina mart did suffer significant damage. there has been an update to the apartment complex that was evacuated. we are told everyone but the occupants of four units have

come back in clover dale. changing political tides have the north bay city changing its opinion on dispensaries. california could soon approve the recreational use of marijuana and clover dale city readers are taking notice. the council is meeting to establish a committee to revamp city policies regarding cannabis. they banned dispensees in 2008 citing concerns on crime. the music is over in golden gate bridge park, the outside lands concert came to close last night with elton john rocking the city. ♪ >> elton john played to around 60,000 people, organizers live streamed the entire festival so everybody could watch. we're learning that that wasn't enough for some fans. they didn't play by the rules. a police officer was hurt near the event as the officer was trying to stop pens jumpers

consulate builng in 5:42. new this morning, shots were fired near the u.s. consulate building in istanbul overnight. two attackers opened fire leading to a shootout with police, the gunmen were able to get away. later police caught one person in connection with that attack, an attacker was hurt in the crossfire. it's an attack that came hours after an overnight bombing at a police station in the same city.

a nice cool on-shore flow and this is what you need to know before you head out. we start out with mostly clear sighs inland and as we take a look now at san jose not a whole lot happening except for traffic swrams on the roads, but now as you get a look at that seven-day forecast coming up at the bottom of the screen, no major changes in those temperatures and mostly clear skies inland. it becomes mostly sunny for those spots along the coast that start out with clouds and slightly cooler today than it was yesterday, breezy winds and mostly clear evening as the sun sets and now it's at 63 degrees in livermore and concord 61 in hayward and sunnyvale and am san francisco now it's 60 degrees. let me take you hour by hour in san francisco. by 8:00 we still see those clouds hanging around and it will be in the lower 60s. by 2:00 beautiful weather, a little bit more comfortable, a breezy wind, 69 degrees and then the clouds roll back in. don't expect a lot of sunshine in san francisco. in pacifica also mostly cloudy

story where violence erupted amid protests in ferguson, missouri. and officers responded with force. it happened during protests marking the one-year anniversary of michael brown's death, a shooting and killing by a liver. "today in the bay" jay gray joining us live from ferguson this morning. jay, the suspect we've learned still in critical condition? reporter: yeah, kris, sam, good to talk to you this morning. and unstable according to a police description of his condition. look, this all started just before midnight and just behind a row of officers dressed in full riot gear watching what was a peaceful protest. police stressed these weren't protesters causing the violence here, but it was a small group they say of criminals, armed and causing problems. there to it disrupt everything halves going on as so many marched throughout the day peacefully to remember michael brown who was killed a year ago. 40 to 50 shots fired according to police, between two groups, one of the men that they had been watching throughout the night peeled off, turned his

attention and weapon towards two unmarked police cars, striking them with gunfire, officers inside fired back. there was a brief chase. there was another gun battle, he was rushed to the area hospital where he went straight into surgery. look, police worried about what's going on here, say there is the po potential for more violence and warn had a that could come on this day when protest organizers have called for a day of civil disobedience, saying that they wanted to fill the jails not only here but across the country to remember michael brown and to keep the focus on their push for police to be more accountable for their stops and their use of lethal force. they are going to continue to watch things, so are we, kris and sam. we will get back to you if it changes. for now that's the latest live here in ferguson. the man charged with killing six children and two adults at a houston home was set to make his first court appearance today. police say david conley has a

violent criminal history. he had been previously in a contentious relationship with one of the victims. authorities say conley confessed to breaking into that home, handcuffing some of the victims and then shooting them. a neighbor says he warned people about conley. >> i always told them just to leave this crazy man alone. >> i called cps back to get the kids away from there. >> that's all we could do. >> the victims have been identified as valerie jackson and her husband duane jackson and six children ranging in age from six to 13. one of the children is a boy believed to be conley's own son. opening statements later today in the trial of two teens accused of killing a santa clara county paramedic. they are being tried as adults, they were 16 and 15 at the time of the deadly shooting two years ago. both boys are being accused of shooting quinn bowyer in the head during an attempted carjacking in the oakland hills.

oakland police city that burton, mcheel and several other teens as young as 13 were on a crime spree when they targeted bowyer. the other boys have been charged in juvenile court. >> within four years santa clara county may have itself a brand-new jail. the mercury news is reporting that supervisors will tomorrow discuss preliminary plans to replace the outdated main jail south. that wing dates back to the 1950s. the more modern main jail north neck door opened in the late 1980s. county leaders are putting together a proposal to get the state to pay for about a third of the estimated $240 million price tag. a new wing could come online by late 2019. the destruction of a has sieve mural in oakland now triggering a legal battle. the oakland tribune reports that the after wrist is now going after the nissan dealership on the corner of broadway and 27th streets. that's where his mural once was before the dealership reportedly painted over the 98 foot long master piece. the artist thinks this is a
