laura garcia-cannon. let's get a check of the forecast for today. better enjoy it's going to heat up had this weekend. >> yes it will. we start out with clouds and mild temperatures this morning, but, yes, it will be a hot weekend, we will be keeping the ac up on full blast. it's right now 59 degrees in north bay and fog and clouds elsewhere. we see 64 degrees now in san francisco with a high of 72 today. in the peninsula 80 degrees and 85 degrees in the south bay. mostly sunny skies later today and we will talk about that weekend, check out those numbers coming up in a few minutes. good morning anthony. how are the roads looking? we have better news for folks coming in from milpitas if you are using 880 this morning northbound lanes were closed for ten minutes, now one lane is getting through, but you can still notice the traffic flow is a little slower than usual coming through this particular area. earlier they were diverting traffic off of calaveras, don't think they are doing that anymore. no problems across the tri-valley through the peninsula up too at that toward the bay

bridge approach. things are still very quiet this morning. we begin with breaking news. san jose police investigating their 19th homicide of the year this morning. crime scene tape you see it right there it's up at a business park on the mortgage side of the city. >> "today in the bay" damian trujillo broke the story overnight. you just got an update we understand from police. >> reporter: that's right. good morning. it's going to be a long morning here for investigators. they tell me that someone reported gunshots just before 1:00 this morning here and they called police and when investigators showed up here in the 1800 block of lundy avenue they found a body on the first floor of this industrial complex. that victim was in fact transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. police say he was shot on the ground floor of the building. already several different businesses inside that three-is it story facility. there are surveillance cameras around the perimeter of the complex and investigators say that will be a key point in solving this murder. at this point police don't know if the victim is a worker or

what his relationship is to that exact building but they are actively looking for the shooter or shooters. >> initially we were told there might be three suspects but we are still interviewing witnesses and trying to determine what information we can get from hem. >> reporter: there are several people coming into work today in the surrounding buildings who are shocked by the news but they didn't want to appear on camera to share those thoughts with us here on nbc bay area. we also know that this happened just two blocks north of the main lundy post office here in san jose. we're live in the south bay, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." thank you, damian. new details now, outrage in oakland, protesters shut down a pre wai after oakland police shot and killed a suspected car jacker. jacker. >> protesters there blocked traffic on i-8980 at 27th and martin luther king jr. way last

night. earlier in the day officers shot and killed a 24-year-old man at that same spot. this started when an officer tried to stop a car that they i had tied as being involved in a july armed robbery. the driver took off and ultimately crashed with the car on 27th street. a police department helicopter pilot was following this along, spotted the man trying to car jack another car once he was on foot. when that didn't work out the gunman ran. three p officers confronted him, ordering him to drop his gun. >> the suspect at that time actually advanced towards the officers while holding a pistol in his hand. the three officers then fired at the suspect. >> i don't believe the officer life was in this jeopardy like that to where you have to shoot a person you know to kill him. >> police say all three officers fired their weapons. those officers were wearing activated body cameras at the time so investigators are now in the process of reviewing that video. now it to a developing story. at least 50 people are dead

hundreds injured after this massive blast in china. hazardous materials spewed through the air as people ducked for cover. the blast was so big many say it actually felt like an earthquake. "today in the bay" kris sanchez monitoring the latest for us this morning, she joins us with more. >> reporter: we certainly know what earthquakes feel like here but we can only imagine what people were thinking as they saw that fireball go into the sky. this is some of the latest video into our newsroom a daytime look at the nightmare before night full. the smoke still billowing from that original explosion and the others that followed. we can tell you that at least 50 people are confirmed dead but there are hundreds of people still in the hospital and there is no official count for the missing. along with the first responders are the investigators who are trying to figure out what caused that blast at that hazardous materials warehouse. we also know that the port town of tianjin is a major hub for the petrochemical industry so

perhaps a related cause. back to the early moments after the explosion, you can see the flames interest that primary explosion which then triggered explosion ns other nearby buildings. the blasts were so powerful whole store pronts just fell aside, doors were knocked off their hinges windows were shattered several miles away. and people did capture it all on video and in social media as well. now, we know that there are hundreds of people in areas hospitals. there were so many people at the main hospital in tianjin that the client please military had to set is up tents in order to accommodate everybody who needed care. but adding to the disaster is a seeming lack of official information from the government. people in tianjin and even as far away as beijing are telling nbc news there on the ground that they are getting most of their information from the media and from the people who are in the middle of the disaster. laura and sam. >> thank you very much kris. happening today, the man accused of murder in a drunk

driving crash that killed four people in the south bay could answer to those charges later today. 23-year-old anthony embrinoni is set to enter a plea in morgan hill court. police say he was intoxicated when he lost control of his car causing it to flip into a ravine in gilroy back in may. three of those killed were high school students. he is facing more than 22 years in prison. a bizarre story on the bay bridge. still no sign of a woman had who reportedly fell from the bridge. the missing woman along with two other women were in a car crash early yesterday morning. it happened on the eastbound direction of the new span of the bay bridge. now, after the crash the women took off on a bike path. officers say when they approached the women one of them started acting erratically and climbed over the railing. an officer tried to pull her back but she slipped and fell. a dump truck driver said he later found a soaking wet woman

at a toll plaza and rove her to a safe place. chp thinks they know who she is based on an id they found at the seen. a labor union leader reportedly facing bribery charges in connection with back room dealing involving pot dispensaries. the chronicle reporting that federal pros urts this week charged daniel rush of oakland, he is the cannabis executive director of the united food and commercial workers union. prosecutors charged him with fraud and accepting kickbacks in exchange for endorsing potential dispensaries. they say rush received money and gifts and this one case borrowed from a dispensary $600,000 that he never repaid. if you live in the tri-valley it could be the start of a nightmare. just when you thought traffic was bad enough the outlets in livermore are expanding. shoppers are certainly thrilled, but neighbors not so much. they're saying more traffic starting today in this area of what's now known as the san francisco premium outlets here am livermore where actually all morning long since we've been here we've seen quite a bit of activity as people are preparing for today's store openings as well as store openings throughout the year. now, today the outlet is unveiling 30 brand-new stores the worry is it will bring too much traffic. the first opening of the ream wrum outlets was in november 2012. we spoke with people who described the traffic situation back then as chaotic and are bracing for even more gridlock than the traffic that's already clogging up their commutes. those are the outlets say the gridlock would happen even if the stores weren't here. >> every day if you drive this on a commute as do so many of us we know. everything kind of bottleneck up here. >> we are just hoping that by getting the word out everyone else will be aware that perhaps carpooling or taking public transportation may be the best

way to make it out there. >> reporter: the new stores opening today include jimmy choo, vince, ugg with an additional 20 stores slated to open the rest of this year. 185,000 square feet that's new, this is now the largest outlet center in california in the state. and that is set to of course bring more positive numbers. we will talk about jobs coming up in our next half hour. stephanie chuang "today in the bay." 5:09. also a battle reportedly brewing in the north bay over water, it's pitting environmentalists against 1,000 grape growers in the russian river region. activists are upset about a bill they claim is being pushed by the local wine industry. that bill apparently calls for a new irrigation district covering five areas where the region's wine grapes grow. activists call this a water grab. they plan to protest later today at a sonoma county supervisors meeting. >> the crush will be around the

corner in the fall. >> a lack of water has made this a bumper crop. we don't want -- the drought is very bad but apparently it's going to make some good wine. it's not just friday yet. let's check in on the forecast with kari. >> you will want to grab a bottle of wine head over to the neighbor's house this weekend if it they have air conditioning and you don't because it will be hot. as we take a look now at san francisco, low clouds to start out the morning, something we didn't see yesterday, and now it's 64 degrees. so those clouds opening temperatures from falling too much this morning. it is 59 degrees in napa. livermore 66 as well as 66 now in san jose. highs today reaching 91 in gilroy and half-moon bay the place to cool off at 70 degrees, embarcadero will be at 72 degrees. we do have some widespread 80s across the bay, especially in the tri-valley. let's see how traffic is moving now with anthony. things are much better. earlier we told you about the crash on 880 northbound at 237. we are still seeing some slowing but it's not as bad.

they have toepd up one lane and probably will be opening up mother very shortly. even though there was a lee-vehicle crash it does seem as though things are moving smoothly at least all relative being they haven't left the highway closed. across the peninsula things are moving slowly. up in san francisco there is a report of some smoke near caesar chaf vez the off ramp on 280 near 101. keep that in mind. also to go building across the golden gate bridge. back to you. 5:11 coming up a shift in focus in the 2016 presidential race. the new round of scrutiny though against hillary clinton and how she's reacting. we have a live report from washington, d.c. next.

at cnbc world headquarters. >> good morning to you. stocks will be pointed for a higher open after the market staged a massive turn around on wednesday, the dow a 277 point loss to close relatively unchanged. investors concerns about china's move to lower the value of its currency and prop up its economy are easing. look for data on unemployment and retail sales. the dow closing down just a fraction to 17,402 the nasdaq rising 7 points to 50.44. nbc wroofrl is investing $200 million in vox media as it looks to boost it's lineup and attract younger viewers. fox owns brands such aztec sites the verge and the sports focused fb nation. nbc universal is also close to making an investment am buzzfeed the site known for its trending lists and quizzes which has also made a push into journalism. apple is reportedly working with more than 40 app developers

to make the ipad more appealing to business customers. sales of the ones popular tablet have dropped in the past six quarts. apple has never been a big layer in workplace technology a $2 trillion a year market. back over to you. so from ipads to fab let's. this morning samsung preparing to unveil a new payment system. samsung plans to take on apple pay and reveal its own new payment system. company officials are going to end the suspense at ant event in new york city in just a few hours. the tech giant is also going to unveil it's new west fablet's which are smartphone tablets hybrids. in just a few hours scientists will test fire a huge rocket engine that could one daypro pell ast thoughts into deep space. they are testing an rs-25 engine. it's one of four engines that is power the space launch system or sls.

they hope some day soon the new system will send astronauts all the way to mars. this afternoon's test will last about nine minutes. the amount of time the engine would fire during an actual launch. >> why stop at mars? if you have such a powerful rocket let's go to through toe. >> and wrond. >> and i don't nd to another land, another world. in this one we have had a great start so far to this week. things getting ready to heat up. >> where he and i think we will enjoy today still. we do have the morning clouds, it starts to warm up heading into the afternoon, but this weekend even starting tomorrow is when it starts to get hot across the bay area. let's take a look now at san jose. we do have clouds overhead and you can see there on the interstate in the background flowing smoothly. if you are getting ready to head to work or getting the kids rtd for school it is looking good to start out the day although you may need long sleeves right now, temperatures are in the mid 60s. this is a little warmer than it was where he had at this time and it will be warmer as we go into the afternoon in many spots. san francisco topping out at 72

degrees, east bay will be at 83 and the south bay at 85. north bay 86 degrees, but cool. if you will be at at&t park and you can watch the game right here on nbc bay area. it will be 66 degrees at first pitch and by the end of the game 62 degrees but with those winds whipping from the west it will feel a lot cooler. heading into the rest of the day our winds coming in from the west and that's what keeps our temperatures in check today. also as we start out with those low clouds but this weekend high pressure moves in, that will bring in some of that desert heat and that heat will continue to build. we're talking about triple digits across the bay area especially in the tri-valley north bay, south bay, it will be very hot, in the 90s, san francisco on saturday topping out at 82 degrees. let's see how the roads are moving with anthony. we have better news for those drivers coming in from san jose through milpitas up towards fremont. we had an earlier crash here three cars involved. now chp is saying that two lanes are actually getting through as

it's a disneyovie me to life. ta a look at is video from outde a y-m-a near denver, it's a disney movie come to to life. what you are looking at right now, video from outsight a ymca near denver colorado. a couple of fast friends here. workers caught this adorable video of a bunny and deer playing together last week hopping around communicating i guess somehow. that pair has been nicknamed bambi and thumper. true to the movie the pair formed a strong relationship. staff members say they've seen the two playing together every single day since.

forecast. i think you better enjoy today, the warm up is coming on the weekend. >> it will. today one of the last mild days and it looks like the heat gets here tomorrow and it wants to hang out for a while. let's take a look at what's happening out will now. it is in the low to mid 60s as we start out the day, some low clouds for the north bay, it's 59 degrees. here is a look at those highs today in the 80s and not too bad, right? 87 it degrees in the tri-valley with afternoon sunshine. i will talk more about that weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. things are moving pretty good across the east bay but the south bay is where we have our concern. it's 880 coming down north bay up towards milpitas into fremont. two lanes getting through due to an earlier crash there. coming through the altamonte pass no major concerns, just typical slowing. you can see the cars they are all marching in left, right, everything is looking good here. as we take you to the bay bridge toll plaza cars are starting to stack up the metering lights

not on just yet. we begin with breaking news. san jose police investigating it's 19th homicide of the year this morning. a deadly shooting inside of a business park >> "today in the bay" damian trujillo broke the story overnight. damian, police are looking for the is suspects? >> reporter: yeah, they are. suspect or suspects at this hour laura. homicide investigators have been here for about four hours trying to piece together the steps leading up to this homicide here and so far they have no suspects in custody at this point. they are looking for one, maybe more people. the first report of a shooting came in just before 1:00 this morning when officers arrived they said they found a body on the ground floor of the three-story industrial building in the north end of town. police don't know if the victim was an employee inside the building or what he was doing there. he was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. first reports came had suggesting there may be as many as three suspects but police are trying to confirm that information. for now homicide investigators in san jose are trying to solve

the city's 19th homicide of the year. >> the shooting did ower can you remember inside a business but beyond that we are still trying to piece together what happened and trying to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting. >> reporter: now, there are surveillance cameras around the perimeter of the facility police say they will be key in finding the suspect or suspects who committed this murder. this crime scene is actually two blocks north of the main post office here on lundy avenue. we're live in san jose i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." at 5:31. we also have new details to tell you about outrage in oakland. protesters shut down a freeway after oakland police shot and killed a suspected car jacker. protesters blocking traffic on interstate 980 at 27th and mlk way last night. earlier in the day officers killed a 24-year-old man at that

"today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us with the latest. >> reporter: both those blasts were so powerful folks said it felt like an earthquake and we can only imagine, though, what it felt like as they were capturing these fire balls with their cell phones. this is some of the latest video into our newsroom some of the daytime video where we can see the smoke still billowing before night full. the explosion happened at one place and then triggered other explosions nearby. as you mentioned, at least 50 people are confirmed dead and according to chinese media at least 12 are firefighters who were responding nearby earlier. there are also hundreds of people still in the hospital and no official count for the missing. along with the first responders there there are also the investigators trying to figure out what caused the blast at that hazardous materials warehouse. back to these early moments after the explosion, you can see the flames from that primary explosion and then those of the fires triggered in buildings nearby.

those blasts were so powerful store fronts pell aside, doors were knocked off their things windows shattered several miles away. some of the victims are in the hospital in tianjin, one of the port cities 90 miles from beijing but there's not enough room for everyone so is the chinese military set up medical tents outside that hospital as well. adding to the disaster the seeming lack of official information from the government. people in teen inand even in beijing, 90 miles away are telling nbc news that they don't know if all of the chemicals coming off of that toxic cloud are making their air unsafe to breathe. laura and sam. >> something to stay on top of. this morning one of the fbi's most wanted fugitives on the run for nearly 15 years is finally behind bars. you are looking right now at 52-year-old frank mononegro. police say he sexual assaulted two children while working at a fremont elementary teacher in

2001. the fbi says he escaped to mexico but agents recently received a tip that he is now living in lapgs less. yesterday agents arrested him and he is now awaiting extra can digs back to the bay area. this 17-year-old has turned himself into alameda police. he is accused of breaking into a home in the middle of the night on sunday and sexually assaulting a young girl. that's not all. police say they have evidence linking him to five other break-ins. the victims were all females living in the west end neighborhood. in each case the suspect woke the woman up and then took off. police say he could be responsible for more break-ins and yet another sexual assault. a is suspect that attacked and robbed one of our own nbc bay area news crews at gunpoint has been arrested. this morning san francisco police say they are closing am on two of his accomplices as well. our crew was reporting on the kate steinle shooting along the embarcadero last month when they were attacked along with another news crew by three men driving a black bmw.

one of the suspects pistol which happened our photographer. cameras also captured this attacker, 23-year-old michael jones was arrested last month. he is suspected of going the get away driver. police think these suspects could be behind five tv news crews robberies as well. four thieves on the run this morning after pulling off a brazen crime at an apple store. four men talked into the apple store on university avenue in downtown palo alto and quickly snatched 22 iphones. police called it a grab and go. it happened tuesday about 4:00 p.m. the phones are valued at $16,000. the suspects were last seen running east on university avenue. happening today, if you live in the tri-valley this could be the start of your night pair. just when you thought traffic was bad enough as it is the outlets in livermore are expanding. shoppers are thrilled. neighbors, not so much. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang joins us live from livermore. steph, the outlet's owner says they're making changes to help out with traffic flow. tell us more about that.

>> reporter: trying to sam. one move would be to add more parking spaces maybe almost 1,000 of them and working with the city to determine if who are traffic controls need to be put in the area. i want to point to the activity right now, crews have been active this morning prepping for the opening of 30 stores today and more throughout the year. the worry is we are right by 580 and you can actually see the traffic from here. we spoke with people who live nearby who recall the first opening of the outlets in november 2012 describing the situation as chaotic. trafficwise. now some are bracing for even more gridlock because of bumper to bumper that's alreadying clogging up their daily commutes while shoppers say this will shave them to a trip to places much farther away like gilroy and vacaville. >> i'm totally excited about t this will be a one-stop shop for all of us. >> the traffic going in took us an hour and we only live right off of livermore avenue right here. we get on the freeway just to go to my sister's in danville. an hour. that's ridiculous.

>> reporter: as a result of had expansion this is now the largest premium outlet center in the state and with it the outlet officials say comes more jobs an additional 800 or so on top of the 2000 when this outlet opened three years ago. the tip from police around here carpool or take public transportation. live in livermore, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> maybe you can do the shopping for us had this morning. some of the programs that work with san francisco general are getting a boost from the hospital's foundation. san francisco general's charity foundation awarding more than $1 million to some two dozen programs connecting to the trauma center. it is being provided through the proceeds brow by the hearts grant program. a new leaf being turned over for north coast marijuana growers. humboldt county is preparing to launch a first of its kind regulation for large scale pot farms. it's a series of environmental rules that are going to governing waste disposal and other water related impacts. the party board members are

expected to vote on those new rules later today. the jerusalem fire has now reached the perimeter of the rocky fire in lake county, however, they have not merged. charred brush is keeping them apart for now. more than 30,000 acres have burned had that jerusalem fire but there is some progress it's now nearly 20% contained. keeping a very close eye on weather conditions right now. of course as we head into the weekend. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall >> conditions are still favorable today for them to rye to contain that wildfire but we will have high heat this weekend. right now as you head out you we see the low clouds in san francisco and a milderer start to the morning than we had yesterday. skies will gradually clear and a little bit warmer in in spots and then the clouds roll back in tonight, sunset will be at 8:02 in san jose with a high of 86 degrees, red wood si 83 degrees and the embarcadero will be at 72 degrees. north bay, 87 and napa walnut creek 88 degrees and plooez a high of 89 degrees. we have been talking about a hot

"today in the bay" starts now. good thursday morning. thank you for joining us i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we are tracking the weather and roads, anthony slaughter in for mike inouye. but first let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. shoo good morning. low clouds fog and drizzle to start out the day. it will clear to give us a sunny afternoon with slightly warmer air in spots. in los gatos today 85 degrees, palo alto 85 as well, embarcadero will be at 72 degrees and some 80s also as we take a look at the north bay, oakland 74 and pleasanton a high of 89 degrees. we will talk about that hot weekend coming up in a few minutes. let's check in with anthony. across parts of the south bay we are starting to see some slowing, this is 101 near the 280/680 interchange, also one of those spots that always starts to slow. this morning we don't have any accidents there just want to show you the flow.

you can see what i was talking about, there's the so the that we were showing you, you can see the slowly. 880 northbound at 237 we had an earlier accident they have cleared that from the scene so all lanes are open now. across the peninsula pretty good driving it this morning. over towards the bay bridge toll plaza this is where we have an incident, it's not actually at the toll plaza itself but it's actually the san rafael richmond bridge coming in from westbound directions moving eastbound. there was a four-car accident so just keep am in mind if you are using the richmond san rafael bridge expect some slowing in that direction. an update to breaking news. a man shot and killed overnight at a south bay business complex and now san jose police are reviewing surveillance video to try and piece together what happened. all of this happening on lundy avenue in the city's berryessa neighborhood.
