livepix ta a liveook outside..... pal good sunday morning to you. your time is 7:00. we want to start you off with a look outside at palo alto. it is a little hazy out there. good morning, thanks for waking up with us. i am vicky nguyen. let's check the micro climate forecast with anthony slaughter. hey there, another hot one? >> it is going to be another hot one. a spare the air alert again today because it is hazy outside. smoke from fires burning in northern california made their way down into the south bay yesterday. that's why we have poor air quality expected. want to start you off with yesterday's highs. look how hot it was in san francisco yesterday, 92 degrees.

100 in livermore. gilroy at 101. expect the same for today. no relief in sight. we already started off mild. close to 70 degrees in the south bay. later near the century mark in the south bay. highs in the low to mid 90s. san francisco area still seeing temperatures at the airport in the low 90s. downtown 85 degrees in the north bay, 98. even the tri-valley, triple digit heat. things are better tomorrow. we will talk about that coming up next. >> we were in the city this weekend, driving back down to the peninsula, the temperature gauge stayed in the 90s all day. hot one in san francisco. >> yeah. >> thanks, anthony. we begin with a developing story. sunnydale police say a man is on the run after an officer involved shooting.

happened yesterday south of matilda exit, not far from moffett field. officers say two suspicious men ran from them after an encounter in a motel 6 parking lot. one of the men threw or dropped an ammunition clip. that's when sunnyvale police opened fire, striking one of the suspects. that man died at the scene. police spent hours going door to door looking for the other suspect. >> we know a shooting occurred. i would say that would be a confrontation. don't know what precipitated or led to that shooting. that would be part of the investigation. >> investigators are looking into how many shots were fired. they don't have body cameras. it has been a violent couple months in sunnyvale. this is the second officer involved shooting in less than six months. back in april, an officer shot and killed an army veteran, reportedly suffering from ptsd.

joseph webber had stolen cigarettes at knifepoint when the officer confronted him. the officer opened fire after webber refused to drop the knife and came toward him. happening now, crews are mopping up after a fire burned in the east bay hills. flames erupted 5:30 near grisly peak boulevard and park drive near the uc campus and a national lab. crews say the fire burned about an acre, they have now fully contained it. shots fired near a popular berkeley park this morning. one man is recovering. police were called to the area near san pablo park after 6:30. they initially received several 911 calls about gunshots being fired. when they arrived, officers found a victim suffering from a gunshot wound. he was taken to a hospital to be treated. police do not have a motive for the shooting. relief for dozens in vallejo, full water service and pressure have been restored.

crews have been working to repair a 20 inch water main that broke friday. it happened near soleno and broad street under railroad tracks. it effected homes that spanned 20 blocks. as crews treated and tested water, city officials are now saying it is okay to drink. >> the water is coming back positive for chlorination, it is okay to drink, and this period of time if you find sediment coming through faucets, go outside, flush water for five to ten minutes. >> two fire stations handed out drinking water to those that needed it. a permanent fix is expected to happen next week. san francisco police are investigating a hate crime this morning. a man caught on this surveillance video writing a racist message on the garage door of an asian family. it happened at 3:30 a.m. yesterday near lower hate neighborhood. victims say they were confused and surprised by graffiti, think they were targeted because of

their race. >> it is not ran dep, my brothers and i and fiance live here, we are the only asians on the block as far as i know, it is a pretty nice neighborhood and kind of, you know, i guess we must have -- they must have identified this house as where we were living. >> the family has painted over the graffiti. police are asking for the public's help identifying that suspect. a computer glitch made for a nightmare travel day at airports across the country. the faa says the problem was in a control tower tracking system based in leesburg, virginia. it helped route high altitude traffic near the nation's capital. planes were barred for hours in and out of the area. more than 2,000 flights delayed, hundreds cancelled. passengers were feeling a lot of frustration. >> not a good day to fly. stay home, if you can. >> lot of other things i could do on saturday than sitting in laguardia all day. >> no doubt. the faa was able to reboot the

system yesterday afternoon, but ripple effects from the outage were still effecting air traffic last night. new this morning, lifelong civil rights leader julian bond has died, the act vis, former chairman of naacp was 75. the southern poverty law center released a statement this morning says the founding president passed away last night in florida. he was a symbol of the 1960 civil rights movement, joined others demanding equal rights for african americans. now to a developing story in china where the death toll is rising. massive explosions hit south of beijing wednesday. today, good news. three days after the initial explosion, rescuers found a survivor. he was pulled from inside a charred shipping container 160

feet from the blast epicenter. there are reports it may have been triggered when firefighters attending an earlier fire used water on volatile chemicals. more than 100 are confirmed dead, hundreds are injured, and unknown numbers are still missing. officials at yosemite national park reopened the campground where two teen boys were killed in a freak accident thursday. the victims died when a tree limb fell on their tent at the popular upper pines campground near half dome. rangers are trying to determine what caused the accident. they say a forester inspects trees, and they aren't saying when trees in this area were last inspected. more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, bay area students denied a diploma until now. unprecedented action by san francisco school leader that's making it possible. clearing the shelters. how the bay area stepped up to give hundreds of pets new homes. stay with us. golden gateridge (l

the time is 7:09. let's give you a live look outside at the golden gate bridge. you can see the top there. however, it is going to be hazy and hot outside. anthony slaughter told us this morning, it is a spare the air day, or at least a difficult day for air quality. keep that in mind if heading outside today. continuing our coverage of the wildfires burning in northern california, evacuations lifted. all people near the jerusalem fire are allowed become home. it burned more than 25,000 acres. four homes were destroyed. family, friends, fellow firefighters gathered this weekend to remember firefighter micha michael hollenback. he died after a tree fell on him. his death weighs heavy on those

who knew him and share his profession. >> it is tough for all of us. this is the second in about a month, within a month. it is going to be a tough, long season. >> and it already has been. this was his first season on the fire line. he was laid to resin shingle springs, east of sacramento. graduation limbo. more than 100 high school seniors in san francisco is over. they voted to award diplomas to students unable to graduate because of a bureaucratic stumbling block. they made it through the state exit exam to earn a did i paloma a the superintendent cancelled that because a pending law would do away with it the next few years. that problem is resolved for san francisco students. thousands across california remain in limbo. still ahead on today in the bay, it was an imperial march across golden gate bridge.

let's give you a live look out of our sky camera network now at san francisco. a lot nicer, a little less hazy than golden gate bridge. shaping up to be a warm, sunny day, quite lovely out there in the san francisco area. if you're heading outside, you may not need layers that we are always advising you put on. the force was with him. the golden gate bridge took on the look of a movie set this weekend. more than 60 storm troopers walked the bridge to show support for a man and his wife.

kevin doyle organized the imperial march in honor of his wife eileen. she died of pancreatic cancer. they shared a love of "star wars." in past two months, he walked from the museum in petaluma to san diego comic-con and back to raise awareness about cancer. others joined him in support of the final leg across the golden gate. >> it is breathtaking. i can't put into words the feelings i have now for the support and just sincere gratitude that people are showing me for what i have been doing. >> doyle's journey raised money to start a nonprofit organization for children with cancer. uber-x can take you to oakland airport. oakland joins the growing list of airports that embraced ridesharing services like uber, list, and side car. the apps are allowed at sfo, as

long as they display placards and don't pick up passengers on the lower level. hundreds of volunteers hit the streets from chinatown to clean up the area. it was organized by a city council member that says it has been hit hard by graffiti. volunteers did a lot of painting, picked up litter, swept up gutters. organizers hope it becomes a habit for people that live and work nearby. >> it is a one time event today. we hope we will activate members of the community and merchants to really be part of the solution. >> the makeover comes in time for oakland's street fest. over 50,000 people are expected to come to that event next weekend. thousands of new pets have homes today, and we want to thank you. all day yesterday across the country and here in the bay area, nbc stations and local animal shelters worked to clear the shelters. and the numbers are in. this morning we are proud to report our clear the shelter

event found homes for more than 17,600 animals nationwide, including more than 850 locally. here is terry mcsweeney with more. >> reporter: nbc bay area and telemundo dough 48 teamed up with shelters to find animals permanent loving homes. peggy bunker was at humane society where pepper the cat was one of hundreds of animals snagged up. >> we didn't know there was an adoption event. we showed up, there was all of this fanfare. we were excited to meet such a friendly guy. >> reporter: jeff was helping at san francisco spca. terry hall was in burlingame, and sam brock, laura garcia-cannon were at humane society shelter. animal after animal found enthusiastic new owners. >> we were hoping to find one,

take her home today. >> reporter: clear the shelters is a national day of action and awareness. organizers say only 20% of people looking for a pet go to an animal shelter. most participating shelters waive adoption fees and even spaying and neutering fees. it is not too late to take advantage of that. terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. >> nice to see all those pets joining new families. terry mentioned, you still have time to give a pet a new home. some local shelters are still offering no or discounted adoption fees through today. great cause. i hope they find forever homes. >> we were talking about the duck up for adoption. >> unique animals, not just dogs and cats. anthony, a new day to get out with the new pet? >> relatively speaking, depends where you're headed. it will be hot inland, talking poor air quality for the south and east bay. if you're at the coastline, get the dog in the water. it will be nice to head into the

water. it has been so sweltering. i want to start with this map. you may have noticed if you were out all of the smoke and haze, it is because we have fires still burning across trinity county, way up north. i added the streamline, you can see the direction of the wind, they're coming from where the fires are burning. to give you perspective, the jerusalem fire is about 25,000 acres. each one of these fires separately is about that size. so when you combine it with all of the fire that's burning, you've got massive amounts of smoke moving through the state. that's what we are experiencing today. it is a spare the air alert day. we have high pressure in control of the weather. high pressure gets its name because it exerts a high amount of pressure on the earth's surface, and traps poll you tants and smoke. that's why the smoke isn't going anywhere. high pressure is in control. we have light winds today, that allows for the smoke to build across the bay area. keep that in mind, especially by this afternoon.

it will be really uncomfortable. right now, not bad. temperatures are where we should be seeing them for winter highs. 66 degrees now in the south bay. already starting off mild, 64 in the east bay in san francisco, 62, and moving through the day, it will be hot. 99 degrees for south bay. 95 for the peninsula. east bay seeing temperatures in the low to mid 90s. san francisco yesterday up to 84 degrees downtown, maybe a degree or two warmer, today up to 85 in the north bay, expecting temperatures at 98 degrees. hot spot today per the usual, tri-valley. 104. it will be hot everywhere you go. even at the coastline. the beach report, if headed to pacifica, average high is 67 degrees. you're about 20 degrees above that today. 86 degrees with offshore winds. close to 90 later this afternoon. look at the water temperature. 62 degrees. sure sign of el nino building. towards santa cruz, another hot

day. downtown yesterday got to 101 in santa cruz. boardwalk at 86. you'll be at 89 degrees. because we have high pressure across the pacific driving winds out of the north. you get clockwise rotation around it. high pressure across the desert southwest. both of those combined keep the storm track shut off. no monsoonal moisture. heat will build at the coastline through the day. tomorrow morning, wake up with that over to the golden gate bridge, some fog. not expecting a lot of foggy conditions for inland valleys. winds shift later this evening. that will bring back the fog. you see the wind speed is only 10 to 15 miles per hour. it is not that windy. that's why we have the spare the air alert in effect. temperatures in the next few days, falls back in the 80s for san jose wednesday. east bay valleys cool by ten degrees from 104 today to 90 by thursday. it is all relative. not going to be a big relief

filled with art. since 1927 when this russian hill campus opened, student artists have left their mark. >> the ghosts of the art institute can be remnant anywhere. >> reporter: many ghosts in plain sight, like the famous 1931, temporarily covered by yet another art installation. >> walk this hallway many times. >> reporter: the facilities manager figured she knew where all of the artistic bodies were buried. until. >> i am walking down the hallway, i noticed what i thought was a spider web. as i got closer, those spider webs look like heads. >> reporter: not long ago in a dark hallway. >> that's a painted over fres co. >> reporter: she discovered the school's artistic past peeking through time and paint. >> down the hall. >> i found another one.

i was like there's another fres cohere. >> reporter: she quizzed older faculty members if they knew of any. >> places she was mentioning were brand new to me. >> reporter: she and a libraryian poured through the archives. >> that looks like the boiler room door. he found one picture that we had never seen, didn't know where it was. >> reporter: finally an old article found an old one painted in 1935 by a student, frederick overwhelm stead. >> we matched it. an image of marble workers at fisherman's wharf. >> reporter: he had painted a mural in the tower and school library. with a special grant, they peeled back some of the hallway's paint. >> it allowed us to do small tests. >> reporter: who painted them, why they were painted over is a

the time is 7:30. we want to give you a live look outside san francisco from our sky camera network. looking nice and less hazy than earlier this morning. still, air quality is not so hot out there. good morning, thank you so much for joining us. vicky nguyen alongside anthony slaughter, who is giving us an idea what to expect this weekend and next week. you said not a great day to be outside. >> especially if you have respiratory problems. we have a spare the air alert in effect because of the smoke you may have noticed. this is palo alto. you can tell away from the coastline, that haze and smoke is there. you can barely make out the mountains in the distance, but they're there, believe me. we are looking at mild temperatures now. as we head through the day, haze will build as heat builds. temperatures from the coastline, 85 degrees, to inland valleys at 105.

grocery stores six days a week, next to an american flag and ammo box for donations. >> average box is roughly 200, 250 on the weekend. >> majority of the funds go into the box provide outreach money to get veterans living outdoors to the va. >> i think it is a scam. >> bill hamshier isn't buying it. he served the air force 20 years, and began questioning after his wife gave the men cash. >> the first guy had said almost 100% of donations went to veterans. then when i asked the second guy how much he got to keep, he admitted they keep 40% of all donations. >> he said the more he asked, the more flags popped up about legitimacy of the group. >> why are you basically pretending or implying you're a veteran and tricking people into donating money to you. >> i worked for the pentagon six

years. >> i got this injured from dod. >> they e-mailed saying they don't have a record of his name on file. type in gift a vet.org and it goes to an outdated blog site. >> it is down now. >> they hand out this irs document saying it is also called veteran direct. we found a business address, but the office vacant. a search for their tax id number didn't return results for a nonprofit or charity. still, collectors told our hidden cameras this. >> we file under 501 c. >> we get them enrolled in a program here which is kind of a test program called homeless veteran recovery program. >> that program doesn't exist. acting director of office of veterans services told us he

never heard of gift a vet. a spokesman for veterans court says the court does not nor has ever had any relationship of any kind with gift a vet or falean. >> they traced involvement with gift a vet. >> she's out seven days a week. directly helping veterans. >> weeks later when we asked to speak with her, mint said she has been ill the past year and we never saw her. records the investigative unit obtained show both have a history of arrest, and even on the sex offender registry, convicted of aggravated sexual abuse of a 15-year-old. minutes was arrested in 2007 for third degree grand theft, failed to appear in court, a warrant was issued for his arrest. two years later police found him in illinois, charges were later dismissed. >> everybody is a volunteer. >> we wanted to ask about his claims and work of gift a vet

after he and bob picked up, we followed them to this motel in downtown san jose. >> i want to ask you a few questions about gift a vet. some veterans came and said they were upset, felt like your organization isn't helping veterans. is there anything you can tell us about that? >> nope. >> for donors, that's a red flag. >> fake veteran organizations are a bigger problem. guidestar tracks data on nonprofits. >> are there organizations helping veterans. >> it is a huge trend. given the wars in afghanistan and iraq and a lot of disabilities with soldiers coming back, there are a lot of organizations created to serve that community. >> guidestar says more than 45,000 nonprofits serve veterans. nearly a quarter of the organizations created after 9/11. california is home to about 2500. >> should be able to show you the track record of achievement they had. >> no, i can have a regular

shortage, that's the essence of it. of 225,000 seasonal farm workers required to harvest california crops, as many as 70% are immigrants here without proper documentation or any documentation. previous years, laborers from mexico and central american countries came illegally to harvest from march, april through november, with most returning to home countries at the end of the season. these numbers have declined significantly with better border enforcement. what may be viewed as success in one sense is costly in others. >> you said costly. secure border is essential to national security, politicians on both sides of the aisle agree to that, but that success is triggering another issue, a different problem for our pocketbook. >> yeah, and an important one for the state. california produces about half of all the nation's fruits,

nuts, vegetables. those are labor intensive crops, important things to eat. recent studies show as many as 70% of the growers of these foods have experienced worker shortage. guess what. that means crops growing without harvest, which increases prices here and across the country. and also another thing, it means the united states importing more of these foods rather than relying on home grown crops. >> we're talking basic staples. you talk about all of the crops in aggregate, billions of dollars lost to the state economy. what is happening to overcome the issues? >> a couple of short term solutions, both of which aren't working so well. the first, allowing short term farm laborers through h 2 a guest worker program to work here, but the setup is a mess, full of bureaucratic rules that make it difficult for farmers to use. the second is increasing the pay of farm workers, which is

notoriously low. now as high as $17 an hour. if you don't have the bodies, you don't hire the farm workers. then a third problem, one we don't have control over, that has to do with improving mexican economy, which is giving temporary laborers less reason to come here and stay home. >> larry, what can we expect in the coming years, with fewer farm laborers to meet the growing needs not just for california but the entire country? >> the hope is at some point, one of these days congress will get together on immigration reform. politically speaking, it looks increasingly that legislation won't be passed until sometime after the 2016 election. that means another summer or two with these shortages yet again. meantime, farmers have to do with less, consumers are going to have to pay more for less. it is something to think about next time any of us goes to the

welcome back this sunday. want to start you off with the highs we saw yesterday in the bay area because it was hot. even at the coastline. san francisco got up to 92 degrees. santa rosa 97, meanwhile, gilroy at 101. livermore at 100. expect more high temperatures today. we have fires burning across the state, they're still burning. if you haven't heard of the jerusalem fire, it is about 25,000 acres. the other fires in trinity county is about that size. that's what's creating the smoke. i added the wind streamline here. you can see it is coming directly from where the fires are. that's why we have the smoke in place. it will be another smokey day across the entire bay, worst air quality in the south and east bay. high pressure is in control. whenever you have high pressure in control, it exerts pressure at the earth's surface and allows for pollutants and they

are trapped because of high pressure on top of us with light wind. because of that, we have a spare the air alert, east bay, south bay looking at the worst air quality. temperatures now are comfortable if you're headed out for an early morning jog. temperatures in the low 60s. they're going to warm rapidly through the day. temperature in the south bay near 99 degrees. in the peninsula, 95 there, 94 for east bay. san francisco today seeing temperatures in the mid-80s. north bay seeing temperatures near 100. in triple digits for the tri-valley. take it easy if you have to be outside. two areas of high pressure on top of us, one in the desert southwest, that's bringing in desert heat. the other one across the pacific, keeping winds out of the north. both those have completely shut off the storm track. no monsoonal moisture in the bay today nonetheless in the sierra. a nice bright day, high thin clouds from time to time. smoke and haze builds in the afternoon hours. then tonight, fog pushes back to

the coastline. tomorrow morning, expect a foggy start to the day, at least at the coast. inland valleys will be nice and bright starting the day tomorrow. winds will start to shift today, more on shore wind this evening, this is around 7:00. winds are directly out of the west. that brings in a marine layer tomorrow. tomorrow morning expect not hazy conditions, and that will continue through tomorrow afternoon as on shore winds return. overall, the temperature trend cools off, but still a hot day today. 99 for san jose, 93 tomorrow. back into the 80s tuesday and wednesday. same for east bay valleys. you cool ten degrees from 104, back to 90 by thursday. san francisco, this is where you notice a big amount of cooling. talking temperatures back in the mid-80s today, but look at that as we head toward wednesday and thursday, more comfortable weather. tolerable for san francisco standards if you don't have air conditioning, that natural ac turns on by wednesday and thursday, back in the 60s. a little relief on the way,

challenge race is going to start in a few minutes at 8:00. among the athletes jumping into chilly ocean water, a 12-year-old girl, lily redwine, one of roughly 400 athletes that signed up for the race, which includes a two mile swim and seven mile run. redwine is from texas, has been swimming competitively since kindergarten. it begins with a one and a half mile race from alcatraz to the shores of the beach. then they strap on sneakers to run seven miles over golden gate bridge. she trains ten hours a week. her favorite stroke is the back stroke. >> i was reading something that talked about that swim and you're swimming through the shark's living room, you hope that they're okay with it. >> that would be the least of my concerns. i would be worried about making it through the whole thing. thanks so much for making us part of your morning. more local news tonight at 4:30, 6:00, and 11:00. and all day at nbcbayarea.com.
