"early today" starts right now. good monday morning to you, everybody. wildfires, they continue to scorch the west coast, triple digit temperatures and drought on fueling those flames. nearly every firefighter in the country was on call overnight because of more than 100 large uncontained fires in several states. thb nbc's gadi schwartz has the latest. >> reporter: a small resort town surrounded by fire and residents here are traumatized by the destination. >> reporter: the battle to protect the homes in washington is fierce. the national guard called in to make water drops after thousands were forced to evacuate. but, so far, only 50 to 100 homes and buildings are believed to have been destroyed. >> hard to see this. >> reporter: all that is left of this house is a chimney and its foundation and families like this one trying to find what is most important to them. >> trim from my mom's wedding

band. >> reporter: the fire has also burned a local economy to its core where building after building of one of the nation's fruit cooperatives is in ruins. across the west over 100 large fires are burning out of control, triggering a level five alert for firefighters across the country. the highest alert possible, meaning all federal and some state firefighters are on call freeing up more resources like this state-of-the-art 747 supertanker now standing by in colorado. in oregon dozens of homes are completely gone and families are reeling from their loss. idaho is experiencing massive firestorms over 225,000 acres and california is trying to get a handle on fires and a historic drought. that was gadi schwartz. after a campaign largely spent dodging specifics donald trump is unrevealing a new

policy paper and the issue is in focus, it's immigration. nbc's edward lawrence is in washington for us this morning. page one of this in bold eye italics. "make mexico pay for the wall" is this a policy position or more tough talk? >> reporter: donald trump is talking tough and going forward with substance. he released the positions on sunday and outlined his detailed review on immigration reform. donald trump plans to take a very hard line on immigration if he becomes president. on "meet the press," trump said he would reverse all of president obama's executive orders on immigration and deport all undocumented immigrants. >> we have to make a whole new set of standards. when people come -- >> you're going to plit split u families and deport them -- >> no, chuck. we have to keep the families

together. together but they have to go. they have to go. >> reporter: trump also plans to force mexico for a paying for a wall on the u.s. border. >> they will pay for the wall. they are sending drugs and they are taking money out. they are making a lot of money. mexico is making a lot of money. >> reporter: the details angered some of his republican opponents. others agree on the wall's importance. >> so our leading contender, mr. trump, is going backward on immigration and i think he is going to take all of us with him if we don't watch it. >> finish the wall and make it clear anybody that comes over that wall, once we have done t you're going back. >> reporter: trump says if mexico refuses to pay for the wall, the u.s. will raise fees on visas and border crossing cards. donald trump will take a break from campaigning today and plans to report for jury due to in new york city. >> nbc's edward lawrence, thank you. some sad news to report this morning. actor morning freeman's granddaughter has been killed. she was stabbed on the streets

of manhattan early on sunday. a man has been arrested at the scene and treated as an emotionally disturbed person. no charges have been filed. hines was actually freeman's step-granddaughter. in a statement, he said the following. a search plane has been spotting the wreckage of an indonesia aircraft that went missing on sunday. there were 54 people on board that plane at the time of the crash. 34 adults and three children and two babies and five crewmembers. at this point, no immediate word about any survivors. search and rescue teams are trying to prepare to reach the crash site by air and by foot. this morning, family and coworkers were anxiously awaiting word. the flight should have been less than an hour long. officials say the wreckage has been spotted about seven miles away from the plane's destination in the mountains of

dense jungle of in the mountains east of indonesia. it's an area known for low clouds and fog and to make matters worse, heavy rain and winds were moving through at the time of that crash. the plane was carrying just under half a million dollars worth of supplies to remote evaluations. sergeant first class cory hood was a member of the army golden knights parachute team. while performing a stunt on saturday, hood and another parachutist collided. hood lost consciousness before hitting a building. >> we were watching the parachuters come down and we noticed one of the parachutes was way off to the side. it looked like he was going to land on our building. it looked like he was strapped in. we thought he was that at first. >> hood was rushed to the hospital where he passed away sunday afternoon. he served five tours of duty in

iraq and afghanistan and spent a decade in the army. now, to another tragedy in the skies. two small planes collided near san diego yesterday morning killing five people. the faa report that's cyber liner jet and the single-gin cessna were heading toward municipal airport south of san diego and they collided two miles from the airport and broke into multiple pieces. the fiery wreckage sparked a brush fire that burned two acres of dry grassland. authorities are investigating the cause that have collision. last night's teen choice awards were full of memorable moments. jane the virgin star started the night with a rap that impress e ludicrous. ♪ get your hands up and make it upside down! ah! >> that was good. britney spears took time off

for a look at the monday weather here is a guy who is never clumsy. here is meteorologist bill karins here. >> oh, we all have our moments here! >> nice to be here. >> the weather we seem to be dealing with a new fire and heat every day in the west. the heat dome over arizona and california just been ugly over the last couple of days. i think friday 117 in phoenix, 112 the other day. now we have cooled off slightly but we still have warnings out. still some heat advisories. the next map i have fire icons on the map that show you the current active wild fires. we're not doing too bad in southern california or arizona, for that matter. but temperatures today still about 115. 115 in yuma. las vegas around 111. further to the north we have a lot of active fire weather from oregon to washington state and northern idaho and montana, too.
