one of the most dangerous in eastern washington where homes are destroyed and evacuations are ongoing. miguel is there. >> reporter: flames ripped across this area so quickly, firefighters still don't know the extent of the damage. 75 homes and businesses here have been lost as these flames continue to march towards more homes. this morning in washington state, this is what they face -- a firefight so explosive, so unpredictable the national guard was called to help from the air and on the ground. the so-called chelan complex fire has been nearly impossible to stop. what began as four small lightning fires here merged into a monster blaze. neighborhoods, a warehouse, a lumberyard lost. 2,700 people forced to flee. the fire stretched 15 miles in

some spots, jumping a river, hopscotching towards homes. >> there was fire everywhere around you could look. >> reporter: this morning, the west is raging out of control. more than a hundred large wildfires spreading resources dangerously thin. in oregon, idaho, and california, dozens of homes swallowed by flames. many of these wildfires are wind-driven with mother nature in control, the outlook isn't pretty. in nine western states what was once beautiful is now in ruins. firefighters face a triple threat this morning. drought conditions, gusty winds and of course all of these fires converging across so much of this area. they spent over $100 million a week on fighting fires. next week they will burn through their budget. >> not a good situation. breaking news this morning

out of thailand, a bomb on a motorcycle went off outside a major tourist attraction in bangkok, we're hearing reports at this hour there are at least 12 people dead. >> reporter: savannah, the bomb rocked thailand capital during the height of the evening rush hour. the attack taking place at a major intersection close to the erawan shrine, in center of the city. this may have been a motorcycle bomb. the area is close to shopping centers, as well as a number of luxury hotels and it's possible tourists are among the casualties, however the u.s. embassy in bong koch is not aware of any americans involved. it's a rapidly changing situation. back to you. >> all right, we'll keep on top of it. let's turn to presidential

politics now, donald trump not on the campaign trail this morning. he's on jury duty. nbc's katy tur is at manhattan supreme court. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. donald trump just arrived here for jury duty, telling reporters that he's feeling good and his wall will work. speaking of the wall, he gave some details on his immigration policy over the weekend, this as hillary clinton tries to maintain her lead with democratic voters. today the republican frontrunner is unveiling his immigration plan, including deporting undocumented immigrants. >> they have to go. chuck, we either have a country or we don't. >> reporter: discussing how to defeat isis trump opened the door to sending in ground troops. >> take back the oil. we take over the oil which we should have done in the first place. >> reporter: ground troops. what you are talking about is

ground troops. >> that's okay. >> reporter: trump even offered a window into his thinking. >> who do you talk to for military advice right now? >> well, i watch the shows. >> reporter: trump isn't ready to rule out a third-party bid but offered praise for the gop. that door yet. >> i'm not prepared to close that door yet. i wouldn't be surprised if it happens. they are treating me very well. i just want to be treated fairly. >> reporter: but that's not good enough for trump's gop rivals. >> it's not clear to me that donald trump is a republican, first of all, based upon his willingness to run a third-party bid and some of the positions that he's taken. >> reporter: all this as the democratic front-runner hillary clinton tries to reset her campaign while attacking further. to appeal voters enticed by b n bernie sanders. not to mention the threat of a joe biden candidacy. over the weekend the washington times reported at least 60 e-mails on her private account, have been flagged as potentially having classified information. after clinton dismissed the

controversy as partisan games in iowa friday. >> it's not about e-mails or servers either. it is about politics. >> reporter: jury duty starts at 9:00. he got here at 9:09. unclear how he'll be here. because his limo is still here. >> just an indication of how much attention he's getting not only the political side of things, everywhere he goes, there was a pretty good scene down there when he arrived? >> lot of report erts out here. the reporters crowded around him. telling reporters that he feels good to be here, stopping at the top of the stairs and waving to the crowds like he's the presumptive campaign and it's only august. >> let's bring in mark halperin.

he's in des moines at the iowa state fair. mark, good morning to you. >> it seems that donald truz was listening to critig he was all sizzle, no steak. he spoke to chuck todd on issues things like immigration, iran, isis, was it worth the wait? >> look, the immigration plan is relatively specific by the standards of most presidential campaigns. chuck took him through issues and people heard him talk. but that's not what the trump candidacy is about. it's about punch the tick, talk about the policy. the big thing was at the fair. the day chuck interviewed him he took people in the helicopter. i went up. he was in the best mood i have ever seen. then he walked around. people yelled stuff at him. not "i love you on 'celebrity apprentice'." they yelled you're the only one who can beat hillary. there are clearly flaws but he does now have the ability to say immigration is a big issue.

here's what i think on it. >> compare what you saw in terms of the reaction to donald trump at the iowa state fair with how people there were reacting to the other candidates because basically all of them were there. >> i have been here with sarah palin when she was hot. i have been here with barack obama, george w. bush and i saw the reaction here. mr. trump got a bigger reaction. and as i said, it wasn't just celebrity. it was people really drawn to him. the other republican campaigns monitored him at the fair. they think for the first time trump not only could win the iowa caucuses but he could win other contests, maybe even be the nominee. this is a change in how other candidates are viewing things. the fair was a symbolic moment. >> hillary clinton is there tealing with the continued fallout of the e-mail scandal. she has the rise of bernie

sanders and other big names in the democratic party floating the idea they could jump into the race. how did iowans react to hillary? >> she got a big reaction saying iowa isn't asking her about sanders or e-mail. it's hard to walk up to the first lady and challenge her on her e-mail practices if you're a citizen. reporters are asking and republicans are asking. there is a lot of unease. i talked to rank-and-file folks and elite democrats worried about her e-mail issue. the clinton folks can say and spin it and say this isn't what voters care about. she made a joke on friday that people thought was off key. make no mistake, i think she's the most likely next president because she's the most likely democratic nominee and the republican race is so scrambled. but underneath her strong poll numbers, there's a lot of unease in iowa and amongst democrats around the country. you are hearing chatter about will someone else big get in the race but sanders got a big reaction. he continues to grow and expand.

hillary's people aren't under estimating his threat or of somebody else getting in the race. >> mark, nice talking to you. >> thanks, matt. let's turn now to natalie with breaking news overnight on the search for a missing plane. >> search teams struggling to get to the site where an indonesian passenger plane crashed while on a domestic flight. today, wreckage of the plane was found in a mountainous region in indonesia. the plane was carrying almost 54 people and almost half a million in cash for remote villages. federal safety officials are investigating a deadly midair crash in california. five people were killed when two small planes collided on approach to an airport in san diego county. both planes caught fire when they hit the ground. firefighters put out several brush fires after that crash. tragedy over the weekend at an air show in chicago. 32-year-old u.s. army skydiver

cory hood died sunday, one day after he collided with another skydiver and was knocked unconscious and hit a building. hood had served five tours in iraq and afghanistan and had been awarded two bronze stars. the accident is now under investigation. in china, dozens missing remain missing following last week's industrial explosion. the death toll keep rising. at least 114 people were killed. keir simmons has more from london. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the numbers are stunning. you mentioned the number of dead. with ten more bodies found just today. there are still 70 people missing, mostly firefighters, and 700 remain in the hospital. this morning, the chemical warehouses which blew up last wednesday haven't stopped smoldering. the fire continues to burn at one last point, five days after the explosion. and now some of the 6,000 displaced from their homes are protesting, demanding compensation with reports cyanide has been found in the

about at the top of the show. a scathing piece about amazon and swift reaction from the ceo. over the weekend the "times" exposed what it called a bruising workplace with a backstabbing, abusive culture that left some employees in tears. former staffers said they were pitted against each other and pushed to the brink all in the name of ruthless efficiency. 80-hour weeks were normal and expected. another claimed she was put on performance improvement plan after contracting breast cancer. >> the founder and ceo of the company is issuing a rare response. he's strongly defending his company. bezos is encouraging employees to read the article and e-mail him directly with any allegations of abuse . in a staff memo he says the article doesn't describe the amazon i know or the caring amazonians i work with every day. even if it is rare or isolated, our tolerance for any such lack of empathy needs to be zero.

he said i strongly believe that anyone working in a company that's really like the one tribed in the "new york times" would be crazy to stay. i know i would leave such a company. obviously saying i won't let this stand. what i have read about. there are a lot of people quoted in the article. >> there were many, many interviews and this piece obviously went into a whole culture in a period of time. a lot of people are reacting to it. of course they know this company so well. >> it went beyond just typical griping that a lot of people hear in the hallways of the office every day. >> tamron, what are you hearing? >> it's interesting to read the comments. jeff bezos is not the only one speaking out. there was a huge reaction on social media. some fans of amazon have already turned on the company. for example, best selling author john green tweeted this one. this nyt story made me cancel my amazon prime subscription. worst cult ever.

shaki wafel good morning. i'm sam brock. the usgs is reporting a 4.0 quake in piedmont this morning due north of oakland. that was felt from san francisco to the east bay where our own chief meteorologist said he felt the shaking. we'll continue to follow that throughout this morning. >> a deadly police encounter unfolded overnight. police are investigating another deadly officer-involved shooting, this happening on center road and east capital expressway in east san jose last night. police say they shot and killed a man reaching for his handgun.

this marks the third deadly shooting for the department in this week. and we have a lot going on here. >> yes, we had the 4.0. we've had about five aftershakes here in the past few minutes and that will continue at least for another couple of hours. now looking at these highs today reaching into the 90s, even over 100 degrees across the bay. get ready for a hot, hazy and smokey day. >> we're looking over here to palo alto where southbound slows to university. slowing here, as well as coming off the san mateo bridge, 880 moving very well but a good deal of traffic. nothing dramatic here or approaching the bay bridge. the earlier crash on the backup southbound has cleared out of san leandro. >> good to see better traffic throw there.

debris in a rugged mountainous area and rescue teams are trying to reach the site. and donald trump is taking a break from the campaign trail. the republican presidential front-runner has been summoned for jury duty in new york city. also, coming up, some new research revealing the one thing you should have in your life for sustained happiness. >> i think a lot of people won't be surprised by the answer. some might be. let's start this half hour with an arrest in the stabbing death of morgan freeman's granddaughter. and this morning, we are hearing from the oscar winner about the tragedy. nbc's betty nguyen is here with the latest on this. betty, it's a horrible story. >> just tragic. e'dena hines was killed in front of her home in new york. she was freeman's granddaughter from his first marriage. the actor and the family are trying to figure out what led to the shocking crime. this morning, new york city police arrested and charged the suspect with second-degree

murder in the death of morgan freeman's step-granddaughter. the actor calling it tragic and senseless. the 33-year-old who was also an actress was found lying in the street near her home early sunday with multiple stab wounds to her torso. she was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead. neighbors called 911 after they heard screams coming from outside. >> i looked out the window. this person was on the ground. this guy was on top. she screamed again. i went and called 911. >> reporter: police took 30-year-old lamar davenport into custody at the scene and then transported him to a medical center for a psychological evaluation. he was later charged. witnesses say it appears davenport was performing some sort of exorcism. >> i cast you out, devil. in the name of jesus christ, i cast you out. he was saying that throughout the whole thing. >> reporter: multiple reports

identify davenport as hines' boyfriend though it wasn't confirmed and say the two just enjoyed dinner with friends hours before. >> have you been here before? >> reporter: hines, a graduate from nyu's school of arts, shared her grandfather's love of acting. she recently returned to new york for a role in an upcoming independent film. in a statement freeman said the world will never know her artistry and talent and how much she had to offer. her star will shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. may she rest in peace. >> and police say davenport is being held for evaluation. freeman thanked supporters on facebook for the tremendous outpouring of love. i can't imagine what the family is going through, especially considering the circumstances of it. >> betty, thank you very much. >> now a look at dylan for the weather forecast. >> and we do have stormy weather, especially through the midwest today stretching back into the eastern rockies. this is a system that's going to intensify more so tomorrow. but this morning we have

important things is that, again, a headache as a presenting symptom of a brain tumor sh n, common. if it is associated with numbness or weakness in the hand or mental status changes, something you should see your doctor about. >> stomach aches, a lot of us get them. something about abdominal pain. >> here we are talking about could your belly pain be a symptom of an ulcer. typically we would experience pain in the belly from the nhl to the breastbone. it's called a burning pain. it would be typically worse on an empty stomach. often relieved by foods that buffer stomach acid. any of the pains that could be associated with a pain in stool. for example a black tarry stool, see your doctor. >> swelling pain in one leg. >> we all know about people who have fluid retention. or congestive heart failure. they will have swelling in both legs. but swelling in only one leg, particularly in the calf

associated with pain could be a symptom of a blood clot in the leg. what would be the risk factors for something like this? some people inherit abnormalities of clotting. people who spent a long time on a car ride, airplane or people who are sedentary, lying in bed for a long time or post-op from surgery. back pain. a lot of people suffer back pain. specifically at night. this is a huge thing in the spine literature or what we do as rheumotologists. what's the difference between back pain that wakes you up in the night as opposed to i wake up with achiness. we are talking here about very specifically back pain that wakes you up from a deep sleep at night. if you have a history of cancer anywhere else or you have any back pain associated with fever or unexplained weight loss, see your doctor to be sure it's not either inflammatory arthritis,

at large and that was possibly armed and dangerous. >> investigators did say they found a gun near the body of the suspect who was shot and killed. and another gun was in his backpack. but police have yet to release more details. though a news conference is scheduled for an hour from now and we'll be there. we'll be back with a look at weather and traffic coming up after the break. weathetoss trafc

are on. earlier stall has cleared at treasure island. easier drive into san francisco. and san mateo bridge lighter flow towards the peninsula side. northbound 101 is still jammed from north of 680 toward the airport where there was an earlier stall, but that's starting to move smoother. and earlier crash 280 at 17 has cleared. south 880 around the transition to 237 still crash. local news in half an hour. hope to see you then.

taking a look at the headlines there is an important new study on teens and health. researchers at harvard studied data from 15,000 people and found people who don't see a doctor for medical reasons in their teens are likely to have health problems as adults. the study found the risk of adult chronic health issues is as much as 52% higher among people who needed medical help as teens an didn't get it. security experts have advice if you conduct personal business over public wifi, don't do it. hackers and scammers ramped up efforts to steal info from public users sometimes with a fake account to look like a hotel or airport wifi connection. their best advice is never enter credit or debit information or other account numbers when using

public wifi. it's always been a galaxy far, far away but disney has plans to create two "star wars" themed lands at parks in california and florida. visitors can visit a new planet and ride the millennium falcon into battle. no date from disney when the new attractions will open. i hope we go there. anyway, "straight outta compton" took in more than $56 million over the weekend according to early estimates. and we'll have some cooler air for the end of the week. and that's your latest forecast. >> on june 17 a gunman opened fire at the emmanuel african church in south carolina. nine people lost their lives including a mother of three who was also a part-time minister. we are going to talk to her son chris in a moment. first a look at his life since that fateful evening. it was a tragic night in charleston, south carolina. >> breaking overnight church massacre. nine people killed when a man walked into a prayer meeting and started shooting. >> reporter: one of the worst mass killings in south carolina history. >> charleston is a city in mourning. >> reporter: among the victims, shrhonda coleman singleton, a single mother of three. her son chris, a student at charleston southern university remembers getting the call that night. >> i got the phone call. i knew something was wrong. someone called me on her phone

and it wasn't her. i was praying it wasn't severe. when i got down there i realized it was something major. >> reporter: when chris found out she'd passed away his focus turned to his family. >> i felt bad for my brother and sister. they haven't had the time i spent with her. i felt worse for them than myself. >> reporter: speaking at a vigil for the victims he preached forgiveness for the gun man. >> love is stronger than hate. if we just love the way my mom would then the hate won't be anywhere close to what love is. i felt there were only two things i could do in that situation. i could be hateful and not forgive him. or i could forgive him. i just chose to love him and forgive him. >> reporter: since then chris has been keeping himself occupied, focused on baseball. he thinks about his mom often. >> i have a ton of pictures of her. i think about her smiling in her pictures. i think about her cheering at my

baseball games. >> reporter: his coach and mentor stuart lake said chris is a remarkable young man. >> chris has helped me more than i have helped chris. i have tried to be here in the classroom and as a person. the strength he's shown is incredible. >> reporter: as he keeps his eyes set on a career in the major leagues, chris knows his mom is guiding him every step of the way. >> she loved everybody with all she had. she gave you a hug even if she didn't know you. i feel she's watching every game. >> chris singleton is with us. first of all our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. to hear people talk about what a strong young man you are, how have you found this ability in this tremendous loss, chris? >> honestly, i think it's because everybody has been praying for me. when something like this happens you never think it will happen to you. i think everybody praying for me has allowed me to be strong. >> chris is being extremely humble. his coach is right.

9:56. good morning. i'm scott mcgrew. jolts through the east bay this morning as a 4.0 earthquake rolled on through. this according to the usgs. it happened just before 7:00 this morning. we haven't heard any signs of damage, but communities across the bay area certainly felt it. we'll keep an eye on this story both on air and online today.

let's check your weather. >> good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. getting ready for another hot day with a high of 100 degrees in the south bay. and still poor air quality with some haze and smoke in the air. in the east bay we are feeling the aftershocks after an earlier earthquake. it will be 90 degrees. in san francisco 82 degrees. and north bay 95 degrees. the tri-valley today expect a high of 103 degrees. any delays on the b.a.r.t. because of that earlier quake, mike? kari, that was the beginning of some delays and then there were a couple major medical emergencies around the system. but now b.a.r.t. reports they're recovering about ten-minute delays for some of your larger delays. the rest are back on time. looking at the bay bridge toll plaza we have a backup for the cash lanes. fast lane light. look at your maps. we have lessening commute around the proechs. 101 north of 280 another crash late in the morning commute caused more slowing there. an easier drive on either side
