"today in the bay" starts right now. a very good morning to you. >> triple digit tens on the brain. >> good morning. a little bit of relief. 3 to 7 degrees in some spots.

we take a look. a low clouds are back. mostly clear at 61. here's a look at today's high across the bay area. 91 degrees in the south bay. 80 east bay. try 90. as you can see, it will still be hot in some areas, but i'll let you know when it really does cool down. that's coming up in the microclimate forecast. good morning, mike. >> good morning. we're looking over here. this is 101. 280 southbound that i'm tracking. we don't see anything here. good stuff. look at the map. reports of a crash in that area right there. the connector right in that area. reports of a spinout. we're still waiting for chp to drive through the area. again, the live camera didn't show any problem. we have a new crash reporting somewhere around 280. we'll track that and give you an update in a few. back you do. >> thank you very much, mike. we begin now with new details on another deadly shooting involving san jose beliepolice.

>> today bob redell is there. bob, they say they're tied to really heinous crimes. >> reporter: yes. the man who they shot and killed sunday night and the man who they shot and killed last night here in this south san jose neighborhood were both wanted in connection with the murder and torture of another man on thursday. so last night around 7:00 san jose police were following the second suspect. they tell us they had information he was armed and about to kill his woman passenger because she knew about his involvement in last week's murder. there was a chase last night. the police ended up crashing here near valley christian high. then he tried to take off on foot. >> the officers were chasing the suspect and the suspect reaches

for the waistband area. the officer fires his weapon, shoots the suspect, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. >> reporter: police tell us they did not locate a gun by or on the suspect after they shot and killed him last night. officers are looking for a third man in connection with what they are characterizing as a horrific killing of a man on thursday. they're encouraging this third suspect to turn himself in. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you very much. happening today, the namly of a mother shot and killed in san francisco earlier this year is going to make a plea to find her killer. 32-year-old maria sosa was watching her children play in front of her bay view home back in january when a stray bullet struck he. the suspects were targeting a man driving an suv. that man also was killed in the shooting. police recently released this surveillance video of the incident. they believe the shooters are in

this truck, that black truck that's turning the corner right there. today sosa's father is going to speak to the media about her death in the hopes of identifying the gunmen. they're trying to work on their homeless population. they want to put up a temporary homeless shelter not far from central expressway. neighbors are not excited about the idea. several hundred packed into a community meeting to voice their concerns. many say they propose the cause but they say the location is all wrong. it's a local area close to bus lines so clientss can come to and fro. it's large enough to accommodate 100 people. >> the city and the santa clara county board of supervisors will vote on whether to fund the shelter project next week. if funding is approved, it will

go up in november. that 4.0 quake hit just before 7:00 during the end of our newscast. the epicenter was at holy names high school near piedmont. this happened to be the first day of school. now, no reports of injuries or major damage, but thousands of people and dogs felt the earthquake. uc berkeley scientists say this could be a preview of bigger things to come on the fault line. >> we know when we have something like this, the chances of another earthquake somewhat big never the next week is about 5%. and that's much higher than average. >> the last major earthquake on the hay worth fault line was in 1868. studies estimate a massive quake on this fault could cost 32 billion in damage and leave thousands injured.

all of them were older cast ooin pipes. the district says this is a remind over what could happen if we get hit with a much larger quake. the district advises people a c days of water in your home in case of an emergency. anderson reservoir in morgan hill is closed to all boats because of water levels. the closure is in effect indefinitely. >> boating, vishing, anything that would bring your internal temperature down is a good idea. >> it would cool off. summer is hanging on. we're still in the thick of it, kari. >> i thought, it could be a little bit better. today in los gatos it will be 89

a developing story now. fires are tearing across the west coast leaving behind a path of devastation and destruction. firefighters across the country are stepping up to help out. >> today chris is following the story for us. we're learning it's not just firefighters degree deployed anymore. >> no. it's going to feel like a war zone. it's going to start looking like it. active military personnel are now going to join the fire

fight. they've deployed from the u.s. department of forestry. there are three major fires burning in northern california as we've seen and probably smelled but there are 19 up and down the state and close to 100 other uncontrolled wildfires all across the west. in washington state whole neighborhoods may not survive, but with the additional u.s. military personnel, the fire fight there and here may change. >> we're starting to get the resources in that we can change over from doing nothing but protect the structure from starting to get on to where we can start doing perimeter control, getting on the edges and working on stopping the advances. >> as fast as the fires are burning through acres of land, they're burning through money as well. the u.s. forest service is spending $100 million a week and is on track to use up its entire budget next month. california has already spent $133 million since july 31st and we're not in peak fire season.

coming off of a scorching last couple of days. it was pushing. that's the god's honest truth. >> feeling like arizona. not only that we were choked out by the smoke coming from the wildfires from the north. little by little each day it's getting better, okay? i think that's an improvement, right? especially when you walk out the door this morning. you feel a little bit of cooler air as we take a live look now at san francisco. the clouds are back. that's something we've been missing the past few days. so our weather pattern will continue to change. we'll tell you why here in just a few seconds. but take a look at that seven-day forecast coming up at the bottom of the screen. well, in the east bay now at 62, it's 59 in san francisco, the north bay. up to 57 degrees. the high of 92 in the south bay and some of the hottest spots. 86 degrees in the east bay and 85 in san francisco and topping

out at 72. so yesterday at this time we had winds coming in from the noncht look at the arrows now coming in from more of a southwesterly direction and even as we go in to the afternoon, the winds continue to shift. it really won't be that strong today but at least we have an onshore flow that will bring back our regular air conditioning. the winds are changing. once again we have the smoke from the wildfires as the wind came in from the north but it will push it to the south and farther east. as we go through the next couple of days and the marine layer will deepen. we'll see the fog returning on the bay. here's a look. each day it goes down a few more degrees. thursday will be the coolest day this week. now let's check in with mike for traffic. >> all right, kari. right before our eyes i see trucks clearing. that's eastbound 584. westbound, you see it bogging down.
