a ushre rni onteeteainn t soh bd . . bushfire burning, the challenge to firefighters now. >> what happened in the moment before an alleged murder? police release surveillance video hoping to track down the suspect. something in the air, unpleasant smell that has oakland residents covering their noses. "today in the bay" starts right now. good wednesday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's get a look at forecast halfway through the workweek. how are we doing? >> we're doing great, so much better than the way we started the week. right now, as we take a look outside, it's nice and cool with temperatures in the lower 60s. we even have mid-60s.

i think it will drop a few more degrees as the sun rises. into the day, a high of 79 in the peninsula. east bay 80. 87 south bay, san francisco, 69. north bay 81. and mike already tracking a few issues on the roads. >> we have a couple of crashes now. not affecting speed because of light volume around the bay. north 87 julian on-ramp. there's a crash, no major injuries, no slowing through the area but that's it for south bay. rest of the bay smoothly, midday game for the oakland a's 12:35. a crashing involving a motorcycle highway 101 around el granada. the developing news, firefighters battling flames right now in san jose. it's a vegetation fire that grew several acres overnight. it's off of san felipe road and heartland way in san jose close to the silver creek country

club. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell tracking flames. anytime we see a brushfire break out we have a question, any homes affected? >> reporter: sam and laura, fortunately no. we're at a police checkpoint. this is six miles away from the fire. along san felipe road. because this fire is burning above where people live, cal fire tells us that no homes, no structures, are threatened. the fire that started just before midnight, it's now about more than six acred in size and 70 percent contained. based on a conversation we had with cal fire over the past couple of minutes. and if you look at video, notice some of the flames are burning very hot. very fast. and the comment we heard from cal fire as well, that's four year of drought, you have a lot of heavy fuels out there cal fire's deployed 11 engines, 3 tenders, 4 hand crews. because the area where it's burning is remote end of san

felipe road in southeastern part of san jose, it's very steep it's near and along a 50-foot drop-off, according to cal fire, the agencies have to rely on hand crews, more than anything else. for the firefighters trying to navigate that terrain, it's going to take more time. they expect them to be here well into the morning if not part of the afternoon. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. on a wider scale now, also happening wildfires raging across the west coast. firefighter captured these images of the firenado, battling a fire in idaho. it does look like a tornado. so far 100 wildfires across the west coast. the situation is so dire, military troops are coming in to help for the first time in almost a decade. a developing story now. for the first time we are seeing the chilling surveillance video that san jose police say happened moments before a murder. three suspects seen with guns in hand reportedly chasing a victim

through a san jose business. police say the homicide is what led to two deadly officer-involved shootings this week. >> you see how they were -- the suspects were running after and intimidating and terrorizing the victim. >> the video's from an office complex on lundy avenue last week, where police say three men terrorized and killed another man. police shot and killed one suspect, 38-year-old matthew castillo sunday. the next day another suspect, 40-year-old richard jacquez, a deadly encounter with police as well. right now there's a search for the third and final suspect. motive for the killing is not known. right now, 4:34, pg&e crews are working through the night trying to find the source of a mysterious smell in east oakland. the fire department started getting calls from what they smelled appeared to be natural gas coming from the coliseum.

pg&e called in with a has mat team. the utility company brought in special equipment to search for the source of the smell. >> we sent out about two dozen gas technicians to sweep the area using our state-of-the-art leak detection equipment and have not found traces of natural gas. >> i'm concerned about long-term effects, chemicals or things that could happen with the kids, family members. >> the different agencies chasing that smell believe it could be the result of a business nearby using a different method or cleaning tanks. a warning along the peninsula, keep your pets indoors. animal control says coyotes are responsible for a series of cat maulings in palo alto. two cats found dead. city leaders say there's been several coyote sightings near deer creek and page mill road. experts say the drought is causing animals to travel farther from habitat in search

for food or water. >> effect of the lack of water which does not appear to be around the corner. kari hall. >> it will be a while before we see any type of rain in the forecast. it stays dry. and it's been so hot the past few days. and temperature trend is heading in the right direction. yesterday we had highs in the 70s and and 80s and 93 in livermore. so that's coming down from 106 degrees, where we were on sunday. now looking at temperatures, high today will be 85 degrees in los gatos. san mateo 76. san francisco in the upper 60s. more comfortable weather and tomorrow will be the coolest day of the week. so, we continue on this trend with cooler weather with mostly 70s and 80s across the bay. we'll take a look at weekend forecast which will be warmer. more on that coming up in a few minutes. let's get a look at road with mike. >> here toward smooth drive, westbound 580. i just had a crew here, going to

4:40 now. hillary clinton is speaking out amid a firestorm about her use of a private e-mail server while working as secretary of state. she says there's nothing to worry about. clinton says she set up the personal sever out of convenience, and admits to deleting personal e-mails. but now sources say, they're optimistic some data can be retrieved. clinton is blaming the controversy on republicans who she says can't beat her on the

issues. been to an airport recently? how many stars would you give tsa or the dmv? you can tell them exactly how you feel about your experience. government is teaming up with yelp to let you size up its services. >> edward lawrence live in washington, d.c. the government hopes feedback will actually help. >> sam and laura, we use it for restaurants. we also use it to look for hotel or something. why not use it for the federal government? now that's the message from the general services administration, digital government team. they were up last week, they want to review government services. they would like you to look at that, and that's when the team was set up last week. now it took 20 minutes to renew a passport, you can give a review on that. or was it customer service at the parks that was a problem. the federal government is asking for feedback on all of this. according to the white house, the hope is managers and employee of federal government services will look at this and make changes to help better

coming up on 4:45 on your wednesday morning. it's a day of cs, cloudy, cool, and coastal. but i think i might have gotten the order wrong. >> sam, go ahead, it's early, wednesday morning, his brain's already working. still trying to get mine going. it will be a great day across the bay area as we get ready for more sunshine. we're taking a look at the bay bridge. mostly clear to start out. we don't have the low clouds just yet but they may settle in here in the next couple of hours. the seven-day forecast coming up at bottom of the screen. it's wednesday, time to start making weekend plans. and it is looking like a nice one. and it's now 58 degrees in the north bay. south bay, 63 degrees as you head out. it will be 87 degrees later today. mostly sunny skies. peninsula today reaching 79

degrees. 80 in the east bay. san francisco a high of 69. north bay, 81 degrees. morning clouds and fog will be with us for a couple of more hours. holding on to san francisco throughout the day. temperatures kept down like yesterday. talking about upper 60s for the highs there. so as we look elsewhere across the bay, clouds start to roll back in. dark shades of gray show where clouds will be the thickest as we go into early tomorrow morning. so hot high pressure is now moving out. and we're getting ready for each morning seeing that coastal fog and a cooling trend. but then as we head closer to the weekend, we'll be in between weather systems. but it will be warming up just a bit as the high pressure to the east fights back onshore flow. but a much improved weather pattern for the next few days. livermore highs in the upper 80s today. by the end of the weekend, back to the upper 80s after some cooling tomorrow and friday. let's check in with mike for traffic.

earnings such as walmart with upbeat report on housing. data today on consumer prices and the minutes from last month's fed meeting which may offer clues as to whether the fed will raise interest rates in september. dow falling 34 points to 17511. nasdaq down 33 to 5059. mastercard and target work on a settlement related to the massive data breach during the holiday shopping season in 2013. on tuesday, target struck a deal with visa to pay $67 million for costs card issuers banks incurred from the hack attack which may have compromised 40 million credit cards and exposed personal data from 110 million people. american express adding a cashback feature to prepaid debit cards as it seeks new users beyond traditional customers. the new cards out give users 1% cash back on all purchases. that's the first time that's offered on a prepaid card. most only offer cash back at certain retailers.

the monthly fee is $5.95. you'll have to spend $600 to break even. back over to you. >> good to know. >> a lot of money. happening today, san jose city council is going to discuss a plan to allow garbage trucked to collect much more than just trash. we're talking about your information. some city leaders want to put license plate readers on the front of garbage trucks in the hopes hopes of catching criminals to help understaffed police force. the mayor supports the proposal but wants to make sure it does not trash people's rights. >> certainly we want to understand civil liberties implications, legal implications, anytime putting cameras in publicing we're all concerned about that. >> the program could help track down fugitives, stolen cars and missing kids. garbage collection companies and employees would not be able to access that data. priced out of their million dollar view home, that's the

fear at pacific skies mobile home park in pacifica. the property's right on the ocean. it's home to low and moderate income families. last month two dozen residents got a 60-day notice to vacate. owners want to renovate. residents are concerned they won't be able to afford rent once that park reopens. >> we can't afford it. we're under 2,000 a month. >> you never know when that notice is going to come. >> after community meeting last week, the vacate notices have been rescinded for now. the pacific skies working on relocation assistance program instead. some south bay workers are going to be taking home more money than they do now. the santa clara city council voted to boost the city's minimum wage to $11 an hour, which takes effect january 1st. santa clara city leaders say it's the highest minimum wage in the entire county. also, now adjusted annually and pegged to consumer prices. >> a follow-up from blue to

4:53, almost 5:00. halfway through the workweek. temperatures should be decent today. check in with meteorologist kari hall with a microclimate forecast. >> good morning. much better compared to what we've seen the past few days. and the temperatures now, in the mid-60s. we do have clouds but no major issues as you head out right now. and as we go into the day, highs in the 70s and 80s across most of the day. and a look at all of the microclimates, los gatos 85, san mateo, 76. marina, 64. upper 80s for the north bay. dublin today 84 degrees. much better than over the weekend. are the roads looking better now, mike? >> looking really good right now. but i was concerned because san mateo bridge camera, there it is, instead of flashing lights,

going from the toll plaza across the plat section over the service area on the right but i was watching new york reports of incidents, no slowing it's an easy drive, the dumbarton bridge. rest of the bay smoothly. little build west 580 out of the altamont pass, standard flow into livermore. caltrans has a new plan to bring down a large chunk of the old bay bridge in one big blast. crews are slowly dismantling the eastern span piece by piece but the largest pier, 260-foot chunk of concrete could be pulverized in six seconds. the sound of the explosions could hurt or kill marine mammals. caltrans inl motimplosion is th environmental sound option. if approved demolition would happen in november. moving away from past there, now to the future. san francisco state preparing to welcome the largest freshman class in the college's history.

more than 8,000 students expected on campus come monday. that includes freshman class of 4,200 students many moving into campus housing tomorrow it's going to be tight living quarters. with so many students the school is tripling up in many dorm rooms. >> a global education group that partners with oakland schools will provide an important gift to oakland students today. free computers. a nonprofit group provides free online educational help. it also has a partnership with some schools including unity high, a charter school in east oakland. today the academy will recognize some students' accomplishments by providing them computers at no cost. >> excellent effort there. 4:56. new school year getting under way, there's something parents of fourth graders should know. all fourth graders and families granted free admission to national parks or other federal lands for a full year beginning this school year. educational, beautiful. president obama announced the every kid in a park initiative
