get cell service and there is steep terrain. drop-offs of 50 feet, something that the cal fire firefighters are having to navigate. this fire starting around 10:00 last night. grew to just over six acres. cal fire telling us it is about 70% contained. and they do have a lot of resources on this fire because we are in the fourth year of the drought, heavy fuels out there very concerned about this spreading as they would with any fire but especially now given the conditions that they are dealing with. this fire is above the population, so it's not threat. ing any of the homes here in the neighborhood. we're at here, any structures that may be around there. but it's tricky to fight because of the terrain, because of the fuels they've got 11 engines, three tenders, four hand crews. hand crews doing a lot of the work because they have easier access than the engines and the trucks and whatnot. they will be here through the morning and possibly into the afternoon. again, this fire here in the southeastern portion of san jose

burned over six acres while you were sleeping and is 70% contained. live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. 6:01. chilling new surveillance video to show you, chaotic moments before three armed suspects shot and killed a man inside a san jose business. since that homicide last week, police have shot and killed two of the suspects, and now the desperate search is on to find the third man involved. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us now with more on the developing story. >> hi, laura. police have clear video of those three suspects entering the office space where police say they terrorized and then killed a 38-year-old man last week. now the man who is dressed in all black right here is the only suspect that is still at large and he appears to be armed. san jose police released the video last night showing three suspects entering that office space thursday, that's 29-year-old matthew castillo first who had a gun in his hand followed by the masked man who

appears to have a club then 40-year-old richard jacquez runs in last, and he appears to be holding what police describe as a tech .9 assault weapon. police say that was moments before confronting and then killing that 38-year-old victim who puts up his hands. the spokesman had to assume jacquez was armed and dangerous when they tracked him down monday night. it was a i can theic scene as police confronted him monday as he tried to flee to his cousin's house but still speaking at a vigil last night, jacquez's family paints a different picture. >> they were -- suspects were running after and intimidating and terrorizing the victim. >> i don't care what they say. he has family, friends, everybody loved him. and whatever they say, that's up to them. but we know who he is. we know who he is.

>> the third suspect description is unknown because despite the fact the video's clear, he's wearing a bandanna over his face but appears to be holding some weapon. now police say in they are urging him to turn himself in. matthew castillo on the left shot by police after he pulled a gun on them sunday night. the day before jacquez was shot and killed in san jose. while the video of the suspects is very clear, there's no official video when police shot the suspects. those officers were not wearing body cameras at the time. >> very disturbing video. thank you, kris. 6:04, i violent august with the san jose police department with four officer-involved shootings, august 9th, then monday a man kill himself after officers opened fire. august 16th, officers shot a homicide suspect on center and east capitol expressway, then

monday in south san jose. 6:04. hayward police hope suspect sketches could help them solve the shooting death of an east bay teenager. detectives need help identifying three suspects believed to be between 17 and 18-year-olds old. one shot and killed 17-year-old kionta murphy jr., two weeks ago, in hayward. the recent graduate was planning to join the marines. shooting happened near morning side drive. the suspects were last seen driving away in a silver suv. this morning, yosemite dealing with another possible case of the plague. tourists from georgia who visit the the national park earlier in the month has come down with plague-like symptoms. centers for disease control testing that patient to confirm its initial diagnosis. california health department working with rangers to figure out what areas the sick camper visited. the plague, transmitted by fleas

or rodents can be deadly if not treated early enough. yosemite closed two camp grounds earlier over plague fears. investigation under way in sebasto sebastopol a log fell from the peak and hit the worker near the base of the tree. the owner climbed down and began cutting the log off of the worker but by the time medics got there he was already dead. >> a warning on the peninsula. keep your pets inside. animal control cities coyotes are responsible for a series of cat mallings in palo alto. two cats recently found dead in an area that spans from the barren park neighborhood to the palo alto orchards. leaders say there have been several coyote sightings. the drought is causing wild animals to travel farther from their typical habitat searching for food and water.

happening today, san jose city council will discuss a man to allow garbage trucks to collect more than trash. they want to collect information. some leaders want to put license plate readers on the front of garbage trucks in hopes of cashing criminals. the idea is to help the understaffed police force. mayor sam liccardo supports the proposal but wants to make sure it doesn't trash people's rights. >> i think certainly we want to understand the civil liberties implications, legal implications anytime putting cameras in public, we're all concerned about that. >> supporters say the program could help track down fugitives, stolen cars, even missing children and emphasize garbage collect companies and workers would not be able to access the data. >> bay area environmental group planning on presenting its arguments to an appeals court next week in hopes of putting a stop to sand mining in the bay. the group san francisco bay keeper sued california alleging companies mine the bay for sand. a judge ruled against sf bay

keeper but the group appealed. sand is used for construction projects but environmentalists say sand mining causes erosion and could cause the highway and sewer line to collapse if nothing is done. 6:08. at the beach, want to see if it's a good day to go out there. a lot of kids, probably the last day before they head back to school. >> and if they want to go the beach, i don't think you'll be doing much swimming. sunbathing, definitely. as we take a look now, from mt. hamilton, we see the widespread clouds everywhere except the tops of mt. hamilton and it's 61 degrees in livermore. 63 in hayward. san francisco wakes up to 60 degrees highs in the mid-80s in san martin, 87 degrees. mountain view, 81. embarcadero, 69 degrees. in the north bay, expect some 80s there except for sausalito. 68. 86 degrees in concord. and dublin, 84 degrees.

laura. right now keeping a close eye on temperatures, hopefully coming down, kari, to make progressive efforts. >> temperature coming down, air quality improving, don't have normally winds bringing in the smoke like we had past few days. trend of improving weather not only with air quality but temperatures continue. as we take a live look at bay bridge. cloud overhead but not clouds and fog. great new as you head out don't have to deal with low visibility. the skies clearing. lunchtime temperature across the bay, at lunch break, 68 degrees in san francisco. peninsula 72 degrees. and the north bay 71 degrees. now we're talking about temperatures that will be several degrees cooler than yesterday. east bay at 80 degrees. san francisco 69. tri-valley 87 degrees. what's going on here? we have a nice onshore flow, bringing back our natural air-conditioning. and the winds aren't that

strong, winds picking up at about 10 to 15 miles an hour. it does get more breezy this evening here we are at 4:00. winds coming in from the west at about 15 miles an hour. into the evening, more of the same as low clouds return. that hot, high pressure we have to deal with past of days drifting to the east. with it goes unbearable weather. each morning we start out with the coastal fog to keep the cooling trend in place and this within will be in between weather systems and that will give us slightly warmer air. here's a look at outlook next few days. san jose, we will be at 84 degrees toe. 82 tomorrow and 80 friday. but then it does go up a couple of more degrees this within. but still, we're not talking about highs over 100 degrees here. so it will be a great weekend and temperatures about average for most of the bay area. san francisco will see highs this weekend in the low 70s. and the tri-valley expect highs to trend into the upper 80s by sunday.

we'll keep you up to date on that. mike's keeping you up to date on traffic. >> the trend in the south bay heavier volume of traffic here, north bound 101, nothing dramatic but we have that increase that builds north of 680. sensors from green to yellow, speeds below 60 miles per hour, 87, 280, showing more cars of the area off of san felipe road. bob's tracking the fire. no freeways affected but watching fires in the area. south 680 at 84 earlier three vehicles reported there over on the shoulder after a fender bender crash. distraction but no major build. we also have northbound 880 around hagan burger, cars with flat tires of the shoulder, debris by the coliseum. bay bridge metering lights are on. san mateo bridge as well, we got report of something going on, flat section perhaps a car with a flat tire or tire rolling around in the lanes, still getting details from chp. i don't see slowing here but this will take a while to build.

the suspect video of the -- the third suspect is clear but again his face is concealed. now, though there is -- the video of the alleged killing, there's no official video of when police shot the suspect because the officers involved were not wearing body cameras. >> thanks for the latest trying to catch that suspect. 6:34 now. this morning, police are also trying to figure out why someone cut off the arm of a notable statue on the stanford campus. new video of the angel of grief statue this morning. stanford police say vandals cut off the marble arm some time last week. the angel of grief is more than 100 years old first put up in 1901 to honor the loss of her brother. it's valued nearly at $20,000. >> this morning, yosemite dealing with a possible case of the plague.

going on now. the air national gar is trying to rescue an injured man on board a cargo ship. we're getting word the team parachuted into the ocean, now inflating a boat to try to take to that ship. we have video of the air national guard taking off from moffet field yesterday. traveled almost 1,000 miles to reach the green ridge cargo ship. a ship operator called for help yesterday morning saying a crew member fainted and was bleeding with a possible hemorrhage. >> caltrans says new plan to bring down a large clunk of the old bay bridge, one big blast. crews dismantling the eastern span piece by piece now but the largest pier, 260-foot chunk of concrete that could get pulverized in six seconds. opponents say the sound of the explosions could hurt or even kill marine mammals. caltrans says implosion is the most efficient, cost-effective and environmentally sound option. if approved the demolition would happen in november.

yesterday it was 80. so we're heading in the right direction. livermore was at 106. 104 monday, 93 degrees yesterday. and as we go into today, we're expectinging mostly 70s and 80s across the bay area. san jose at 84. san mateo 76. marina at 64. novato 88. oakland, 75. and san ramon, expect a high of 81 degrees today. and we'll have this kind of weather the next few days, even into the weekend. i'll let you know what exactly to expect for the next few days. coming up in a few minutes. let's see how traffic is going with mike. >> going but there was a delay. rippling back from the high-rise back to the toll plaza area where camera is slower drive because of an earlier traffic, clear a tire from the lanes. all lanes clear. this should recover quickly. there will be a build because folk coming off 880 and heading to 927 build off of the highway

and presumed dead after heavy rain caused several landslides in alaska. photos show how devastating the impact is on the small coastal town of sitka. geologists will head to see the land is stable enough to search for missing men. the alaska governor is expected to visit later today. 2 1/2 inches of rain fell in a 24-hour span which caused landslides. new video out of washington state, explosion and fire rocked a motel 6 right near seattle. just moments after all guests were evacuated. a gas leak was reported around 8:00 last night, less than 30 minutes later an explosion levelled a large part of the motel. guests reported feeling a shockwave and firefighters on scene were blown back 20 feet. gas company employee is in the hospital this morning with severe burns. another development in the deadly police shoot-out near stockton last year. the familiar of the hostage killed in the gun battle between

morning. we get the day started nice breeze. onshore flow returns and that returns air quality from the spoke and the hazy conditions we had the past couple of days. now weather and our air quality once again continues to improve. it's 65 degrees in the peninsula. and today's high makes it up to 80 degrees in the east bay. tri-valley expect a high of 87 degrees in san francisco topping out the 69 degrees. north bay 81 degrees. once again, warm in a few spots but nothing like we had to deal with past couple of days. a look at livermore, hour by hour, still clouds in the morning but the sun breaks out quickly. our temperatures making it into the upper 80s. but just a couple of the days ago it was 20 degrees hotter than this because of winds coming in from the west at about 10, 15 miles an hour today. so, a nice onshore flow brings back the natural air-conditioning. the morning clouds active in sunshine. the typical stuff we're used to

this time of year. that hot high pressure continues to drift off to the east. and fog returns for the next several mornings. this weekend, we'll be in between the weather patterns, the area of low pressure moving in. so there will be slightly warmer air for the weekend, looking at the tri-valley, it will be in the upper 80s by the end of the weekend but a look at microclimate comfortable weather. at least not talking about 90s and not talking about 100 here. it will be in the 70 and 80s across the bay area. great weather to get back outside and enjoy the weekend. a look at traffic with mike. >> not talking about anything severe but we are talking about a crash still with activity north 87 at currenter, over on your shoulder. three vehicles there. and fire that bob's talking about, traffic control off san felipe and it's not a problem for bulk of the silicon valley commute which builds typical for the south bay. live shot, earlier traffic break across the flat section.

"today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from the scene with the latest. >> reporter: laura, we've received word from cal fire they have gotten the fire out. started around 10:00. one firefighter telling us, pointing out the obvious, in the fourth year of the california drought, as a result, fuels in the hills are heavy evidenced by the video that came into the newsroom. the fire ended up sweeping through six acres of while land here off of san felipe road in southeastern section of san jose. it was above population, in other words, never threatening homes in the neighborhoods nearby or structures for that matter. but they did have quite a few resources out here, 11 engines, 3 tenders, 4 hand crews.
