this morning 19-year-old owen labrie is set to face his accuser in the courtroom. >> do you see owen in the courtroom today? >> i do. >> reporter: we're not showing her face and disguising her voice, the first witness in a trial that has rocked one of the most elite boarding schools. labrie is accused of raping the 15-year-old freshman last year. prosecutors say it was part of a tradition called the senior salute where older student sought to intimate encounters with younger ones. >> what kind of time? >> from showing them a cool place on campus or taking them someplace, to trying to have sex with them. >> reporter: the girl testified that she initially rejected labrie's invitation. >> thought his intentions were really, really wrong. >> reporter: but later reconsidered after a friend of hers vouched for labrie.
7:33 am
>> it made it feel more genuine that someone had taken the time to seek me out. >> reporter: labrie watched as jurors toured the campus building where the attack allegedly took place. he has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of sexual assault, saying he did not have intercourse with the girl. labrie's attorney says many messages suggest the victim was willing to meet with the client. it could refer to hugging or kissing, not just sex. >> it was a source of pride for girls of the school to be asked to participate in the senior salute. >> reporter: in his initial interview with police, labrie denied the tradition had anything to do with the incident. >> was this part of senior salute? >> i'm pleased the case has gone in the way it has. i'm looking forward to my opportunity to ask questions of
7:34 am

so they are speaking up at this moment to let everyone know this is a tough time for them and their family and want to focus on getting justice in this case. >> it's not easy to go to court and pursue a case in court, many, many rape victims decide not to do that because of the spectacle of it. what is this young woman's mindset as she faces this process? what is she hoping happens here? >> i think she's hoping for an opportunity to be heard for the state to present evidence in this case and to get justice. i mean, she has shown great courage in the face of a lot of adversity to speak out and go through the process. it's very challenging on her an her family. it has really zajsed them from the community in which she grew up in. it is a tough time but she's staying strong and doing what she needs to do and getting on stand again today. >> the defense attorney in opening statements needless to say portray a very different picture of what happened here and also said that she knew what she was getting into. he said there's a text message exchange, for example, between the two individuals after this incident where the defendant

writes you're an angel and she writes back, you're an angel yourself. is she ready to face this kind of tough questions? is she ready to face this cross-examination? how does she explain all of that? >> well, we won't get into the facts of the case right now. that's for the court and for later today. but you know, she like many survivors has faced a lot of adversary in coming forward and she's ready to explain the actions she took. she's from a small community and there's a lot of pressure someone she knew that had committed this against her. i think she has opportunity to explain herself today. we're going to let the jury decide in this case what has actually occurred. >> there's been a real spotlight on the school and alleged culture at that school. does she and her family feel that the school turned a blind eye to this kind of behavior? do they feel the school bears some responsibility as well? >> i think at this time their focus is mostly on making sure that the perpetrator is
7:37 am
accountable but there is concern i think more broadly about the culture at that school. there has been a lot of scrutiny in the media about it. there was some traditions that were known by members of the community and i think more could have been done but at this time their focus is solely getting through the trial one step at a time. >> how has she been treated since all of this happened? does she feel people are taking sides? >> unfortunately, that is the case and in a small town and small community, often when these cases arise, people do choose sides. there has been a lot of effort from the defendant and his side to garner support financially or otherwise for his cause. and so it really has pushed the family out of that community. they are no longer at that school or living in the area. but they have some strong supporters. they are supporting each other at this time. and they are doing what they believe is right, which is speaking out against sexual violence. >> these are important days in the trial. thank you for your time. we appreciate it. >> not at all. thank you for having me on. >> let's take a turn now and get
