he hadn't revealed maybe specifics about that so we'll be keeping an ear on this to hear if he reveals details. >> we'll keep an eye on that and go back live as necessary. >> first, the top story in the west, the unpredictable fast-moving wildfires. the newest claiming the lives of three firefighters in washington state. miguel almaguer is near the scene for us this morning. good morning. savannah, good morning. that deadly fire is still burning. everyone has been forced to evacuate because this fire is so erratic and so aggressive. this as investigators try to determine exactly what went so tragically wrong. with fire and smoke shooting into the sky overnight outside the tiny town of twisp, this is where three u.s. forest service firefighters were killed and four more were injured, one critically burned, when they were overtaken by flames after a vehicle accident. >> i just heard that three firefighters were killed in the fire. just really hard.

>> the blaze broke out close to noon wednesday. quickly multiplying in size. the whipping winds shifting flames exploding, all at incredible speed. >> not a good place to be. fire hadn't come over the hill yet, but it wasn't far away. >> with two small towns evacuated, the deadly place is racing across drought stricken hills. wind is the fuel. police escorted some through the flames. more than 1,000 fleeing for their lives again. this, the second dangerous fire here just as many years. >> very hard. especially after last year. brings it all back. >> with 15 wildfires burning out of control in washington state, more than a quarter million acres here is torched. now the forecast calls for more erratic winds. firefighters risk their lives to help others, the community in

the path of this blaze is praying for everyone to come home safely. this morning, the one firefighter who was seriously injured remains in critical condition. the governor and the president have called the firefighters on the front line heroes. matt and savannah, i want to give you a snapshot of the wildfires raging all across the west. more than 100 fires burning out of control at this hour. a monumental task for firefighters on the front lines who face very dangerous conditions again today as they fight fires with heavy hearts. savannah and matt, back to you. >> our hearts are with them. >> resources are very thin. thanks so much. let's go to the presidential race noand a showdown in new hampshire between republican rivals donald trump and jeb bush. squaring off in dueling town haul meetings and they did not hold back on how they feel about each other and their campaigns. kristen welker was watching closely. kristen, good morning to you. >> matt, good morning to you. the candidates are back on the campaign trail in new hampshire again today.

and it comes on the heels of those fireworks you mentioned between jeb bush and donald trump trading jabs on everything from iraq to their conservative credentials. it's faceoff in new hampshire with jeb bush and donald trump squaring off at simultaneous town halls wednesday night about 15 miles apart. >> mr. trump doesn't have a proven conservative record. >> i don't see how he's electable. >> trump questioned bush's ability to lead in an extended tirade. >> you know what's happening to jeb's crowd as you know right down the street? they're sleeping. they're sleeping now. >> at a press conference where he slammed bush over his stance on iraq. >> for him to say we have to show them we have skin in game is one of the really dumb statements. >> and during a late night cable news interview. >> he's a very low-energy person, jeb bush. he has low energy. it's okay, good if you want to lead a long life. >> bush fired off attacks of his

own, painting trump as a democrat in republican clothing. >> i have a proven conservative record. mr. trump doesn't have a proven conservative record. he was a democrat longer in the last decade than he was a republican. >> ultimately, it was trump who drew the bigger crowd, emboldened by a new poll that showed him within striking distance of hillary clinton who he also attacks for mounting questions about her e-mail. >> i think she's going to have a hard time in the election based on what's happening with the e-mail, the servers, maybe even the speeches. it's going to be a hard thing for her to overcome. >> trump said his main focus is winning the primary. >> the only thing that's constant is trump. all of them change on the bottom. going up and down like yo-yos, but i have been up there for a long time and i hope i'm going to be up there for a long time. i'm not going anywhere, folks. >> polls show trump has solidified his front-runner status. trump has no public events today, but many of his gop rivals will be back on the stump. >> kristen, on another subject,

getting a look at the e-mails that reportedly triggered the fbi investigation into hillary clinton's personal e-mail servers and whether there was classified information in those e-mails, and it was mishandled during her time as secretary of state. >> and matt, that's right. there are two e-mails. want sent to clinton in november of 2012 about possible arrests in benghazi and the second sent by her personal aide, huma abedin. secretary clinton insisted no e-mails were marked classified at the time they were transmitted and her campaign says these two e-mails prove that because they have no classification markings. the campaign also emphasizes the debate about classification has come to light only because the state department is in the process of reviewing and releasing her e-mails to the public. still, matt, this is an ongoing political problem for clinton because with an fbi investigation under way, there's really no end in sight. clinton is taking a few days to

relax, says she's not worried. still, her campaign is clearly ramping up the damage control mode, reaching out to supporters and allies to try to reassure them. >> we started the segment talking about donald trump, and you can see more of them now on the cover of thy"time" magazine that hits the newsstand today. >> inside, he poses with an american bald eagle inside his new york city office, and a new interview, trump is pressed over his stance on immigration and how he plans to deport every undocumented immigrant. >> i mean, if they choose not to go, they say no, i'm not going to go, we have kids in school -- >> it will work out. politicians can't manage. all they can do is talk. it's called management. we'll do an expedited system because i agree with you. there are good people here who are here illegally, but they are illegal. >> that issue hits newsstands today. >> natalie is here with more on the news conference from the former president, jimmy carter. >> we have been listening in this morning.

stunning comments from former president jimmy carter who is addressing his battle with cancer which has spread now to his brain. hallie jackson is in atlanta where a news conference got under way a short time ago. good morning. >> good morning, natalie. in this detailed and personal news conference, president carter revealed there are four spot spots, as he described them, of melanoma on his brain. he's not waiting to begin treatment. that will begin this afternoon and he'll go through four more treatment sessions over the next few weeks. at this point, he said he will cut back now on his humanitarian work at the carter center. it's something he and his wife have been talking about for about a decade or so. listen to what the former president said just a couple minutes ago here in atlanta. >> they did an mri and found that there were four spots of melanoma on my brain. they are very small spots, about two millimeters, if you can

envision what a millimeter is. i get my first radiation treatment for the melanoma in my brain. >> the process of beginning to diagnose this cancer actually began, carter said, back in may, when he cut short an overseas trip because of what he called a bad cold. doctors gave him a physical checkup and noticed a tumor on his liver. an operation there is what revealed the melanoma. >> our thoughts are with the former president. a night of unrest in st. louis where at least nine people were arrested after demonstrators gathered to protest the fatal police shooting of an 18-year-old man just hours earlier. police say the suspect found with stolen guns and drugs was shot when he pointed a gun at police. that prompted protesters to take to the streets chanting and throwing rocks, bricks, and water bottles at officers. surveillance video shows the dramatic moment when an

explosion destroyed part of a motel 6 in washington state. it was captured from multiple cameras from several different angles. a gas company worker was critically injured, but the motel had been evacuated just minutes before the blast because she could actually hear and smell a gas leak. authorities are looking into whether a person leaving the motel could have damaged a gas line. tough story there, but good thing everyone else got out. still, the emergency worker got injured. >> the hotel manager the hero. >> al is on an adventure with two people he plucked from the plaza. how is abu dhabi? >> it's hot, but we're inside the sheikh's grand mosque where it's air conditioned. this space holds 50,000 worshiper. we'll show you more about that in just a little bit. let's look at the weather starting out west. unfortunately, the fire danger remains high.

thank you. >> we'll celebrate with you a little later in the show. meanwhile, we turn to other news, olympic sprinter oscar pistorius will be spending a little more time behind bars than he thought. due to be released tomorrow, ten months into his five-year sentence for killing his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, but that has bib put on hold. we'll talk to steenkamp's mother exclusively in a moment. first, "today" national investigative correspondent jeff rossen is pretoria, south africa. good morning to you. >> good morning to you. this has taken everyone here in south africa by surprise. from oscar pistorius's family to the victim's family, even top legal experts here are stunned. i want to show you the morning papers that just came out. look at this one, oscar's false start. here's the other one, oscar to stay behind bars. look, officials here were on the record. pistorius would be released from this prison behind me tomorrow. the plan was set. now, with at the last minute, the justice minister dropping this bombshell, putting the entire relief on hold.

we have you covered, why it happened and what's next. if you thought the oscar pistorius murder trial took bizarre turns -- >> you killed reeva steenkamp. that's what you did. >> it just happened again. pistorius was sentenced to five years in prison for shooting and killing his model girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. so far, he's served just ten months. but prison officials decided to let him walk and serve under house arrest instead. at his uncle's sprawling mansion. but just hours before his release, south africa's minister of justice saying the parole board had no right to release him, and here's why. south africa law says inmates must serve at least one sixth of his or her sentence before being considered for release, but the parole board decided to release him on june 5th, prematurely, says the minister, with no legal basis. >> i have never seen this happen before, and to wait two days

before being released, certainly bizarre. >> what does this mean for oscar pistorius? >> for now, he's going to remain in prison and the parole review board is going to review the decision to release him on parole and whether that was in fact the correct decision or not. >> how long does it take? >> 14 days to consider it and they'll decide yes, he can be released or he needs to be kept in prison longer. >> and reaction is pouring in. one of oscar's relatives telling reuters they're shocked and disappointed oscar won't be home this friday. the pistorius family adding, we are considering our options. this latest development coming on what would have been reeva steenkamp's 32nd birthday. her parents and friends marking the occasion wednesday, throwing flowers in the indian ocean, celebrating her life. her mom telling us, pistorius staying in prison is a positive sign. it shows the system is moving in the right direction, but on the shoreline, she told me this isn't about oscar. it's about her daughter.

>> think about her today while this unfolds during the week. that she was a person who loved her life and how wonderful she was and what she could have done for other women if she had had longer to live. >> the question now, how much longer will her killer remain in prison? so close to getting out, waking up again today behind bars. no closer to an answer. by the way, it is women's month here in south africa. a woman's rights group here has been very vocal, protesting his release, this month specifically, calling it, quote, an insult to victims of abuse. that group petitioned the justice minister to block it, and it appears, matt, that may have worked. >> all right, jeff rossen, thank you very much. reeva steenkamp's mother june is with us now, exclusively. mrs. steenkamp, good morning to you. you had written a letter to the parole board and you strongly opposed the release of oscar pistorius. you received word that in fact

that release was being delayed on what would have been riva's 32nd birthday. what was your reaction? >> it was a shock. i'm very, very pleased about that. it's an important thing for other people, other women. the justice system is coming through for us now. >> although mrs. steenkamp the way i read it and understand it, this is less about whether the justice minister thinks it's right or wrong for oscar pistorius to be released and more about a legal technicality that the parole board made this decision too early. they should have waited a couple months longer. so are you worried this is just a short delay and that he will be released in the near future? >> i'm not worried about if it's a short delay. it's been set before him to wait now until the time is right. and you know, we struggle in

this country with respect for women. and i think it's giving justice now to reeva. my daughter's life was taken. if she would have lived longer, she could have done more. she would have definitely improved women's position in life. and that is what is important to me. >> i know that since the trial, you and your husband -- >> she had such a short life, but she did so much. >> i was going to say that i know since the trial, you and your husband have said that you would like to have a face-to-face meeting with oscar pistorius. do you think in a face-to-face meeting he would fill in the blanks for you, mrs. steenkamp, that he would give you answers or tell you something that he hasn't said while on the witness stand during his own trial? >> all i want to say to him is what he has done to our lives. destroyed our lives, and taken away the most special thing in our lives, and taken away her future. i don't think he will ever say

anything about that. >> and finally, you do not believe he has told the truth about what happened in his apartment on the night that your daughter was killed, and yet you have said that you have managed to forgive him. and i'm curious how you forgive someone you still believe is lying to you. >> you have to -- if you're a christian, you have to forgive. otherwise, that poison will sicken your body and destroy you. but to move forward, i have to do things. it's better to use my good energy in the right place and try to save other women instead of wondering what's going on with oscar. it's nothing to do with oscar. i'm not really interested. if he says, i'm happy about this now, because it will be good for other women in south africa. so that is my opinion. >> june steenkamp, mrs. steenkamp, thank you very much for your time.

7:26. i'm kris sanchez. that breaking news is that fast moving wildfire blowing through eastern alameda county which is being called the it tesla fire. it started yesterday off tesla road in livermore mere corral hollow road. pooir say the fire has already grown to 2,500 acres. this morning cal fire says containment is at 25%, which is up from last night. fortunately the fire is burning had this a mostly unpopulated area with just a pew homes. flames yesterday it did destroy a vacant structure at a motorcycle park. that park is under evacuation order but firefighters did manage to save all of the nearby homes there. firefighters attacking this both from the ground and from the

air. meteorologist kari hall is here with a look it at the fire fight weatherwise. >> and it's been windy out there, too. we will have still the same breeze after the clouds clear out, humidity also dpropg and it is looking mice now had. a high of 83 degrees had in san jose, the weather pretty much like it was yesterday, palo alto at 78 degrees, marina at 64 degrees and concord 84 a dublin of 87 degrees. we are looking at palo alto southbound 101, i don't as crash but it's on the chp report. i do see slowing past university heading to embarcadero. that's at the top of your map. slowing southbound and northbound as welcoming out of mountain view, west 237. this crash here 85 north towards eastbound 237 it's countercommute and i don't see a lot of slowing will. here is your south bay. anywhere north of the san mateo bridge continues to build heading toward the bay bridge toll plaza. nothing dramatic

heart wrenching. the young girl telling the jury she stayed friendly with the popular senior at first because she didn't want to make a scene during saint paul's graduation weekend. this morning owen labrie returns to court. his accuser faces more questions after days of testimony. we're disguising her voice and not showing the 16 year-old's face. jane w. carney showed the facebook and e-mail messages suggesting the 16-year-old met up with labrie the night she said he raped her. >> it was your choice, right? >> in the end, it was my choice. >> reporter: in one exchange after the allegatied assaultly bre.

carney questioned her why it was important for the girl to keep the meeting a secret. >> i didn't want any misconstrued ideas. i didn't want any falsifications. i wanted him to keep it as a secret. >> reporter: the tense cross examination and effort by defense ofof labrie didn't have sex. it was called the senior salute. >> it's important the jurors know about this and the fact it's been a tradition for so long at saint paul school that it would be entirely unfair to put the blame on a single student for engaging in it. >> reporter: earlier wednesday the accuser told the jury when she agreed to meet labrie she on

the expected kisses. >> i didn't want to come off as an inexperienced little girl. >> reporter: then she said he went too far even though she said no three times. citing a police affidavit the defense asked the alleged victim whether she discussed with a friend what she planned to do with labrie. the young girl responded saying she didn't recall having that conversation. >> thank you, gabe. perhaps a things to come. let's turn to ari melber. it's whether or not the jurors believe her and found the story credible. how did she do? >> she did well in terms of explaining her state of mind during and after what she said was the traumatic attack on her.

that allowed her to put into context some of the statements that on first blush many people would say it sounds like she went along. >> it was an interesting prosecution tactic. they know the messages are out. they want to neutralize it and put it out front. >> that's right. if someone walked in and heard parts of the testimony they might think it was the other side leading this because there were so many things that sounded like inconsistencies. that's the prosecution trying to get it out of the way. hear it first from her in her own words before the cross examination began late yesterday. >> the cross started. we're getting into it. the defense attorney spending a lot of time on this senior salute tradition that allegedly takes place at this school. obviously, feeling this is central. what is the argument he's trying to set up? >> the key argument is not simply to blame the culture broadly but rather go to the

state of mind of the accuser as she entered the intersection. they want to sow doubt and suggest she wasn't just meeting up for coffee or questions. but rather the nature and repetition of what the tradition involved suggested someone should know it involved sex. >> they're trying to say she knows what she's getting into it. this is a tricky situation. any time someone is cross examining and alleged rape victim, let alone 16, doesn't the defense attorney have to walk a delicate line? >> a very delicate line. under new hampshire state law the age of consent is 16. she was 15 when this occurred. she is a minor. she has been emotional on the stand and discuss what she said was a trauma for her. trying ing ting to poke holes story or credibility has to be done with a great deal of care so the jury doesn't think it's bullying. >> of course. but he has to defend his client.

back at 7:44. the story still got them talking. the fbi investigating a massive breach of a website dedicated to helping spouses cheat. tens of millions of e-mail addresses belonging to ashley madison customers available to see on the internet. among the surprise, a number of them seem to belong to mens of the military and government. nbc tom costello has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there's a big caveat here. we don't know how many of the e-mail addresses are legitimate. it's entirely possible that ashley madison customers used somebody else's e-mail when signing up for the service and some of the addresses are very obviously fake because ashly madison never verified the

allegedly belonging to military or government employees. including do mains like.dhs.gov, house.gov, senate.gov many are obviously fake including president@white house.gov. white house e-mails use a different do main name eop.gov. other linked e-mail addresses include vatican staff, members of the u.n. and british government. a member of parliament said her address was stolen and used without her knowledge. online a lot of angry reaction. i hope gets what is coming to them. but also this "cheating is wrong, but also hacking personal information is wrong." already some have asked security pros for help. >> i've had people confess to me they have various felt fetishes,

i guess they're concerned their information will be found. in some cases maybe their spouse will find out about it. >> reporter: the hackers claim their mission is to shame ashley madison and the customers. in a statement the commaanadian parent company responded. the company has said in the past it believes somebody who had a prior connection to the company is behind this, but data was dumped on a part of the internet called the dark web. it is ripe with criminal activity like child porn, drugs, and stolen credit cards. it's very difficult to police because the browsing activity is difficult to trace. what is the next shoe to drop? it could be employers or spouses demanding answers from people whose e-mail addresses are on the list. as many as 90% are thought to be men, but ashley madison insists it's not shutting down regardless of what people may think of it.

statistically significant association with light to moderate drinking in women with a history of breast cancer. there was also an association with other cancers that are thought to be alcohol-related such as liver, throat, mouth, those were not statistically significant. >> isn't one drink a day falling within the guidelines we're supposed to be using? >> yeah. and, you know, the flip side is one drink a is thought to be healthy for us in terms of cardiovascular health. they weren't negating that accepted ideology, but, you know, the idea that alcohol is related to cancer is nothing new. i have to point out the biggest limitation from this study is it had really the data was all what we call self-report. this is what patient subjects were saying how much they drank. a little anecdotally, there's not a medical student told when a patient tells how much you drink you automatically double it.

>> because, of course, we don't want to acknowledge how much we drink. especially not to a doctor. >> right. we're using this data which, of course, is self-report it could be a confounding theory. >> what is it about alcohol specifically that increased a cancer risk? >> so the thought is so alcohol when you take it in it has to be metabolized, aka broken down into different things. the first break down is known to be a carcinogen. and the other idea is certain cancers, which are estrogen. related such as breast alcohol can raisetrogen levels. >> there's another study that suggests working long hours, i think is defined as 55 hours a week or more could lead to stroke. another worrying headline. >> exactly. there is some previous information and data that suggested long hour increase risk of heart attack. this is the finding to look at it for stroke. i have to say a large number of

good morning. it's 8:26. we start with breaking news. a fast-moving wildfire blowing through eastern alameda county. it is called the tesla fire because it started on tesla road yesterday afternoon off livermore. firefighters say the fire has already grown to about 2500 acres. this morning cal fire says it is 25% contained. the good news is that the fire is burning in a mostly unpopulated area with very few homes, but the flames did destroy a vacant structure yesterday at the motorcycle park in the area. that park is now under evacuation orders. firefighters also managed to save all the other homes that were nearby yesterday. firefighters are attacking this fire both from the air and from the ground, but it may not impact your commute because it is pretty far out there, mike.

dark. >> let's talk about nightengale it's another dark movie but challenging for viewers and certainly for the star. you're basically alone for the whole movie. >> yeah. it was a challenge. when i read the script, one of the reasons that i did it -- it was a dare to myself. i said can you be the only person in a movie for 90 minutes? and here is a story of a veteran -- >> yeah. >> who kills his mother. >> yes. >> and then you really just see the break downright there on camera. >> yeah. yeah. that was a tricky thing, you know, he has done the hideous thing then you have to make him empathetic. >> we have to end on a high note. i don't know if you're sick of telling the story. i think this is funny. when you were playing dr. king, i read you stayed in character and tried to stick with the accent the whole time of shooting. >> yeah. >> and really drove your wife crazy. great recipe to make with kids and for kids. i was blessed with a mom who was a great cook but could rub two nickels together to make a dollar. >> you can use any pasta. we have cooked down spaghetti. you want to save the beautiful starchy water. we'll put the pasta in here. you can use left over pasta, pasta that came with a dish. so we set this aside for a moment and take a measuring cup and keep some of the starchy water. >> okay. we have the tasters downstairs, i want to mention, they're about to dig into this. >> oh, my god! >> i'm in love. i love it. >> we have the medium sized onion with a little bit of olive oil. when it gets trance l s trancec

we'll add the turkey. fortunately the amazing folks here at the "today" show already got us a little bit more advanced. we have the turkey and the onions combined. we'll throw in about 3/4 cup of tomato paste. we want to use tomato paste a little bit more intense flavor wise. you don't have to use as much. and the cans aren't that expensive. hand me the pasta and the pasta water. yes, it's water it's going thin out. because it has the starch and salt from seasoning it, it's going to bind ultimately resulting in a thinner kind of sauce. >> quickly now. >> okay. we throw in parmesan, mozzarella, about three cracked eggs, and another little bit of tomato paste. we'll mix it up and layer it in the pan. you can toss it together. you can do it with your hands. layer it and ultimately we have the finished product right here. >> coming out of oven. >> exactly. >> layer of turkey on the

taking look at the headlines. an intriguing clue that could lead to a new approach in the treatment of obesity. researchers figured out how a gene linked to obesity makes people gain weight. a faulty version of the gene causes energy to be stored as fat rather than being burned off. they think it may be possible to one day reverse that. the study in the new england journal of medicine. fascinating. working long hours could shortchange your health. a new study finds people who work 55 hours or more each week have a 33% greater risk of having a stroke and a 13% greater risk of heart disease than those who work normal hours. researchers say the risk went up regardless of gender, age, or economic status.
