"today in the bay" starts right now. very good wednesday morning to you. thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. first, a quick check of weather with meteorologist kari hall. good morning. >> good morning, sam and laura. it is cool to start out the day, but it's going to be heating up this afternoon. as we take a look at the

temperatures, it is in the upper 50s to lower 60s across the bay area. some of us seeing clouds to start, and some of us mostly clear skies like in the south bay. into the afternoon, a high of 79 degrees expected in the peninsula, south bay 85, north bay 88 degrees, east bay 75. tri-valley, 94 degrees today. i'll detail those temperatures, what to expect as we head into the weekend coming up. let's get a look at traffic now with mike. good morning. >> good morning. good morning. look at the bay and we see, as you'd expect, light volume of traffic and no problems as far as those speeds go. towards alameda. getting over from the island to downtown oakland, you cannot use the posy tube, takes you to alameda, away, overnight maintenance until 5:00. use park or fruitvale, two bridges to the south. that's the only alternates. breaking news, a rescue operation under folding in daly city. crews trying to reach a woman and two dogs who fell off a

cliff in the thornton beach area. >> still developing now at this hour. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live now. what can you tell us? >> reporter: yeah, very active scene right now. two firefighters from daly city with a basket on their way down a cliff here on the other side of the brush and of the fence here. we're told it's a few hundred feet down as a drop, down a cliff to the beach here, near pal la saids park. and u.s. coast guard is on the way with a helicopter to try to help with this rescue. 1:00 this morning a woman and her boyfriend hiking over from thornton state beach and stranded after hiking, they fell. the man fell to the beach and was taken to the hospital. she's stuck 50 feet up is what daly city police are telling me. there's a dog with her and another dog 50 feet above her. according to state park's website, this is a closed beach but locals come here, popular to hike. don't know why they were there so late in the night or early in

the morning. i also want to note, it was almost a year ago to the day that three people fell off a cliff, basically virtually in the same location, one actually died here on the beach. but we're told that the woman is conscious, she's been speaking with the rescuers. we'll continue to have updates throughout the show and bring them to you. live here in daly city, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you, steph. 4:33. a violent and disturbing crime could leave more officers on the streets of san francisco, a message expected at a news conference after a tourist was shot on lum bard street. a military pilot from thailand is recovering after a thief shot him in the arm during a robbery yesterday. police say the pilot fought the thief for his camera and was shot. a tour bus driver says the victim is part of a group of military pilots from thailand's royal air force. the group was in town to see the city. >> thank god he's okay, you know. he -- the bullet penetrated his

left arm, upper arm, and it went in and came out the other side. so we're hoping that there was no bone fracture or injury, just flesh. >> police chased the gunman and another suspect in a car across the bay bridge to oakland. the chase ended when the driver crashed the car. police eventually arrested one man. the other took off but was later caught in someone's backyard. an important day for the court proceedings of the undocumented immigrant accused in the shooting death of kate steinle. prosecutors will present ballistics evidence that could determine whether juan francisco lopez goes to trial. yesterday they testified the tourist captured photographs of sanchez before and after the july 1st shooting at pier 14 in san francisco. we're not allowed to show you images but none of the photos demonstrate the suspect's face. sanchez accused of killing steinle while out for a walk with her father.

4:34, no plea from the man accused of killing a hayward police officer. it was standing room only inside the courtroom as the 21-year-old made his second appearance before a judge. charged with murder with special circumstances in the death of hayward sergeant scott lunger. last month during a traffic stop. the case was continued until october to give his new attorney time to review the case. >> where do they go? where to house the homeless population in silicon valley, this large and a hot debate in the south bay. the site is on the former air force station near 101 and 237, seven miles from the originally proposed site near downtown sunnyvale. the new site could house a hundred homeless people and that change comes after many residents voiced concerns about having a shelter near homes and schools. last night dozens of people

spoke to the city council, asking them to approve the change of location. >> it's not that it's just not near a residential area but more avenues for the homeless to get to where they need to go to for the day, whether it's a job, restaurants, grocery store. >> santa clara county plans to invest $1.3 million in the temporary shelter. the sunnyvale city council will vote on the issue next week. halfway through the workweek, wednesday morning. >> taking it on home. we've had such nice weather to start the week. >> it's going to get warm inland. let's check in with kari. >> it will be warm today and tomorrow. but then it does come down in time for the weekend starting out, take a look at temperatures. it is cool, especially in the north bay and napa, 53 degrees and feeling temperatures in the lower 60s in livermore, san jose, santa cruz wakes up to 58 degrees, a high today of 85 degrees. we're looking at that for san jose and los gatos 88.

castro at 72. 88 novato, oakland 75. san ramon, 92. tri-valley heating up. what are the roads looking like? >> looking good, actually better because of overnight road work. one example, see that flashing light, hidden behind that sign. but we found it for you, that's eastbound 580 away from tassajara to el charro. westbound, that's your commute. not so bad as it looks. we're pretty far from the shot. the entire area, smooth flow of traffic. speeds down to 60 miles per hour as we look at south bay, clear down here as well. northbound will be commute later on. >> thanks, mike. next, just adorned with france's highest honor, northern california man returning home to a big celebration. a g wcomhomforne thyou mewhotoa

warm and adoring home for a young man who stopped a gunman on a paris-bound train. 23-year-old anthony sadler is back in northern california, hailed a hero. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez has more on his big homecoming. >> he's sleeping in his own bed this morning, having arrived by private plane in sacramento last night. but anthony sadler arrived first in oregon, looking every bit like a normal college student he was just days ago before he and two friends gained hero status on the french train. the two friends, national guardsmen, alek skarlatos and u.s. airman spencer stone

arrived the ramstein air force base with more fanfare, a lot of families and airmen greeting them, and this is stone talking about having saved his friend's life. now they are arriving again, arrived at ramstein air force base. they're not back in the u.s. just yet. before heading back to sacramento, all three were pinned with the french legion of honor award and anthony sadler got to walk the red carpet of a movie premiere in france. still reeling from this amazing chain of events as is his family. >> i feel like i'm in a dream, unreal. two days ago on the train and two days later, all of this has happened. pretty crazy. >> my brother, i don't know what to expect. i think he's been so overwhelmed, pulled so many different ways i want to hug him, let him lead. >> she wants to let him be normal for a minute. the a quick minute. the fourth american, mark moogalian, remains in the hospital recovering from a

bullet wound. he was shot in the whole incident. nbc news reporting his condition is worrisome this morning. as the other three train heroes make their way them to, sacramento is preparing quite heroes welcome. sacramento mayor says they're working on a parade plan to honor the three and we are gathering details on that plan today. >> all right. exciting for them. thanks, kris. coming up, donald trump is at it again. see the run with the journalist that has a lot of people talking.

we are coming up on a quarter to 5:00 on your wednesday morning. as laura said, halfway through the week. mike's all smiles. kari you're smiling. we're feeling good. temperatures warming up. >> it will be warmer today, in the tri-valley. you're talking about the highs in the low to mid 90s today but this within, you'll want to see that forecast. it is going to be absolutely gorgeous. much more comfortable. as we take a look outside now, here's san jose, we see that things are nice and quiet. still dark outside. and little bit of clouds starting to move in. we'll see the clouds for a few hours and then clearing out as we go into the afternoon. here's a look at what we're feeling across the bay area. the north bay, 56 degrees. 62 degrees in the peninsula. today look for a high of 79 degrees in the peninsula south bay 85 degrees. and the east bay will be at 75 while the tri-valley tops out at 94 today.

heating up there. and if you're heading out to the giants game, later on this evening at first pitch, we'll have sunshine, 64 degrees, dropping back into the lower 60s. and a cool evening for a game at at&t park. into the next couple of days, we see the line showing the direction of the wind and the green here showing rain and there will be a leading edge of cooler air moving in. looks like we will have a slight chance of rain for the north bay as that cool air arrives. but mostly dries up for the rest of the bay area. and our temperatures will be cooler for the weekend. so we're talking in the 80s and even some spots hitting 90 degrees and then this weekend, it cools down to 80 degrees in san jose. looking very cool especially even in the tri-valley. i'll talk more about that coming up. let's see how traffic is moving with mike. >> good morning. looking here toward the bay bridge, where westbound, taillights and continuing over, make their loop around treasure island, smooth. both directions, in fact.

look at your map. the speed sensors reflect the same thing, kari talks about giants versus cubs 7:15 but not presenting any issue this morning what happen is is still construction crew blogging off the posy tube. that tube is closed for another few minutes, harpark, high stre open for businesses. rest of the bay moving well. giants fans may be looking for ways to get to the park, uber breaking out the mold, testing out a bus-like service. >> for more, we turn to landon dowdy. good morning. >> good morning to you both. u.s. markets poises for another bounce at the opening bell today. following tuesday's late day fade. stocks started sharply higher with the dow up 441 at the highs, after china took action to try to prop up its slumping markets. but those gains were trimmed with selling picking up in final hour of trading. the dow closing down 205 for its

biggest one day reverse until nearly seven years. index had five straight days of losses with more than 100 points. asian markets mixed with china down 1%, but japan rallying 3%. and europe is in the red today. amazon expanding its prime now service to its hometown of seattle. it will also start offering same-day one to two-hour delivery of beer, wine, other alcohol but just in the city. it was launched in manhattan last year. it's now in eight other u.s. cities. uber testing a bus line service in san francisco with a new feature called smart routes. a car will drive on a set route with set stops and pick up passengers along the way part of uber pool where passengers share a ride for a lower cost. back over to you. >> give muni a run for its money there, maybe. thank you. it is 4:48 now. moving on to decision 2016. republican presidential

front-runner, donald trump, had a run-in with a member of the spanish media yesterday. the anchor jorge ramos tried asking about immigration while trump called on another reporter. then ramos repeatedly interrupted. >> excuse me, sit down, you weren't called sit down. >> no, i'm -- >> sit down. go ahead. >> i have a right -- >> you haven't been called. >> i have a right -- >> go back to univision. >> ramos allowed back into the news conference. trump then allowed him to ask his question and then the two proceeded to have a spirited debate about immigration. you can hear from the man himself, matt lauer will sit down with donald trump later on the "today" show starting at 7:00. >> enlightening exchange of ideas there. 4:49. congresswoman jackie spear teaming up with promegsle athletes and coaches in the hopes of bringing attention to pay inequality between men and

women athletes. the issue highlighted by soccer star alex morgan. the former cal player is a star on the world cup champion women's soccer team and plays for portland. last month mog "money" magazine reported top pay is less than $38,000 a year. professional male soccer players average more than $300,000 a year. >> one california bill a pen stroke away from providing better protection for lgbt families and couples looking to start a family. state legislators approved the equal protection for all families act. it seeks to better protect lgbt couples, married or unmarried, having children or trying through assisted reproduction. supporters will gather today in san francisco to ask governor brown to sign the bill into law. 4:50. important anniversary now, this week marks ten years since hurricane katrina hit the u.s. today the head of fema heading over to the gulf coast to assess

things now ten years later. he wasn't in the post when katrina hit back in 2005, craig fugates will be joining others to commemorate the tragedy but celebrate the recovery. katrina, still the most costly natural disaster in the u.s. and also one of the deadliest. more than 1,800 people died. thinking of booking a last-ment getaway, beware. travelers searching for hotel rooms are tricked into paying more than they should. when many travelers booked or checked in, they often didn't get the room or amenities requested. they also had to pay unexpected booking fees on top of the daily rates. the problem, thousands of travelers who thought they had reserved directly through a hotel's website were actually directed to a third party. you're urged to be beware of pop upads that appear on legitimate hotel websites. think your commute is bad?

degrees in los gatos, half moon bay 7 on san francisco, low 70s. 80s for the north bay. tri-valley will be the hottest into the 90s. let's get a look at the commute with mike. >> you started off with a look at downtown san jose. in the background, 87, 280, nothing going on there crash just cleared big rig stalled there in one of the lanes but cleared the freeway, that's it for the south bay. as we move everywhere north of the dumbarton bridge, moves smoothly, bay bridge no problems. giants game this evening, post work traffic around the ballpark. san mateo bridge looks nice now. the toll plaza right now is very clear. the live look at toll plaza camera shows no problems. during the day later on the commute, the worst drive in the world, but, sam, i'll let you handle what it is. >> in the entire world, mike, all right, i guess we'll have to reveal this who ranks supreme when it comes to the worst traffic? it's not l.a. it's not the bay area. it is your nation's capital. if you've lived there, this does

not come as a massive surprise. new report found that washington, d.c., has replaced l.a. as the worst traffic city in the country. the beltway has a lot to do with than the study shows congestion shows drivers wastes more than 3 billion gallons of fuel and kept travelers in their car for 7 billion extra hours. lot of tabulations. >> a lot of potholes on the road, as well. google wants to get into the business of fixing them. most say filling potholes is not a real issue but finding potholes is the problem. google wants to help with a system that uses gps from car's navigation system. a bump sensor added to participating vehicles to detect and map out potholes. google says technology would create an entirely new database of road conditions for departments. 4:56. a bay area company selling a product called just mayo has a problem. regulators say it's not actually mayonnaise. hampton creek's just mayo

doesn't have eggs so the fda's issued a warning letter to the san francisco company. letter cited several violations including the company's misleading branding. it's not the first time hampton creek has had an issue with vegan mayo. last year it was sued for false advertising and for fraud. something to think about before visiting a baby in the neonatal intensive care unit. make sure your clothing is clean. a new study found 4% of swabs collected from clothing of nicu visitors had detectable traces of rsv, almost everyone gets it but it can be deadly for premature babies. most studies are -- more studies are needed to determine how long rsv remains infectious on clothing whether separate gowns should be recommended when visiting the nic-u. scrub down. >> wine enthusiasts rejoice, one of the best times of the year. growers are harvesting their
