update to breaking news. a dramatic rescue, still unfolding on a peninsula cliff side. involves a woman, a dog -- a woman, a man, two dogs making things problematic for rescuers. >> happening near palisades park along thornton state beach in daly city. stephanie chuang live to explain why crews are in a holding pattern of sorts. >> reporter: yeah, it's because of those dogs. i got an update from the fire battalion chief, the coast guard headed back with chopper to sfo to change pilots, to a more experienced pilot, to come back in a half hour and make the rescue of the woman who is 54, we understand, hanging off a cliff, it's past the fence, past the vegetation there, 300-foot drop, straight down to the beach. she fell about 150 feet down. she's been there all morning long since 1:00 in the morning. when the report first came in that she and a 27-year-old man had been hiking from thornton state beach and slipped and

fell. the man was able to climb back up, go to the house, make a call and he's at a local hospital. she's been stuck there. firefighters tried to get down to her earlier this morning but two pit bulls with her chases the firefighters away. the fire medics away. the plan right now, you saw video, the chopper from u.s. coast guard, had been circling, assessing the situation to see if they could rescue her. the plan is that, yes, they will come back and try to do that. it will be around 6:30, that's around sunrise, hopefully lighter out. more visibility. as for the dogs, two rescue and control officer interests the humane society and spca standing by to try to get the dogs. they're going to use nonlethal ways to get the dogs out the the way. number one priority is to get the woman. the dogs are a barrier to that right now. they're hoping the chopper sound will scare dogs away. they're using a beanbag gun to

he said he stumbled upon a bag of weapons and planned to rob the passengers. big day in court for the undocumented immigrant accused in the sheooting death of kate steinle. evidence could determine whether he goes to trial. yesterday investigators testified that tourists captured photographs of lopez sanchez before and after the shooting in san francisco. we're not allowed to show you imamounts but we can tell you none of the photos clearly show the suspect's face. lopez sanchez accused of killing steinle while out for a walk with her father. a crime could lead to more officers on the streets in san francisco, that's expected today after tourist was shot on popular lombard street. a military pilot from thailand recovering after a thief shot him in the arm during a robbery yesterday. police say the pilot fought the thief for his camera and was shopt the victim part of a group of military pilots from

250. if you're doing math at home, that's a 650-point swing. still, nothing like the nearly 1100-point drop we saw in the opening minutes of monday's opening. a burglar made off with more than $30,000. cameras caught the suspect steal the cash from the fillmore neighborhood. after walking around the store for a few minutes, the suspect notices an open office door towards the back of the business. the man looked in the office and stumbled across $33,000. another story about stolen cash, police say this man robbed a bank of the west on washington after last week. the man walked up to a teller, demanding money. he gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of cash. long awaited rebirth of a south bay shopping complex about to take a step forward today. the vallco shopping center in cupertino.

a week or two later. we're in the last wek of august, already picking chardonnay grapes at the estates, vineyards here in livermore. the senior cultural manager, how did you know to pick now versus level? >> sugar, and when they hit a point and also out walking and the field and tasting flavors. >> reporter: look in the perspective of the drought, you've been here eight years, in the business 15. >> the technologies have come along over the last eight years, five or so years especially. technologies have advanced in the industry. >> reporter: figure out the best way -- >> sensors, soil moisture probes, all of those different types of things that we use to help manage to make the decisions, appropriate decisions. >> reporter: how much will your yield be down because of the heat? >> this year it looks like we're going to be 10%, 15% across the

valley here. >> reporter: what do you anticipate the quality? what effect would that have on the quality of the grapes and wines? >> quality will be exceptional. walking in the vineyard, tasting the flavor, i think the quality's there. this could be one of the vintages they talk about in years to come. >> reporter: i'm getting -- i have no idea. >> delicious. >> reporter: tastes really good. >> ready to bring? all right. >> reporter: thanks, rob. a lot of workers here. out here since 3:00 in the morning. they'll take this over to the processing center, just on the other side where we're at now, and start the actual crush, sort of getting juice out of the skins. later this morning, here in livermore valley wine country, at 11:00, they'll have the annual blessing of the grapes where they'll have clergy there to try to give this harvest a little bit of good luck, maybe help from higher power.

7:45. we have temperatures in the 50s right now. into the day, the sun comes out it will be i warmer than it was yesterday. that's the trend we've seen throughout the week. a look at tri-valley temperature again, 94 degrees let's go hour by hour in san jose. start out with sunshine 8:00. it will be 63 degrees. warming up into the 70s. by 1:00, hitting 80. we'll be in the low 80s for a few hours. light westerly wind, not much of a wind. we can tell by the arrows, the direction of the wind. and that will bring in some cooler air as we head closer to the weekend with the push of cooler air moving in on saturday. a look at that weather trend, 90 degrees tomorrow. and then 87 on friday. weekend will be beautiful. we're talking lower 80s, even cooler than average. all of us will have some cooler than average weather. mostly 70s, low 80s there in the south bay as well as tri-valley. north bay hitting 80 degrees by sunday. get some plans to get outside.

make some plans to get out there. it will be gorgeous. morning commute with mike. >> it's not gorgeous for the morning commute in the south bay. now 101, this is not so bad but i'm worried about more volume kicking in here, look at your maps. the ripple effect, we're talking about the crash, north 87 approaching 28 on traffic backing up from highway 85, back to capital expressway a short time ago. that's the build. folks will have a choice or making the choice to take the expressway to 101, may cause the volume to kick in for the bay shore freeway. we'll track that, see if there's a shift. so far everything's maintaining a typical slowdown in the area. southbound 880 and 680 build a bit. south of the 580 and 238 area there. a smooth flow across the bay towards san mateo bridge. 101 starts the build. bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on. 880 past the coliseum, traffic flows smoothly no problems northbound or southbound. my wife travels through his area

a live look at nyse, opening bell this morning. we await. there they do the honors. see how the markets will fall. to the nasdaq, wall street hoping for stability today after the dow swung 700 points yesterday. the biggest reversing since 2008. >> "today in the bay's" edward lawrence live in washington, d.c., with more on what we can expect today. edward, probably the unexpected? >> laura and sam, all smile there as the bell's opening. the investors are hopeful. now futures were baktly where they were 24 hours ago. futures for the dow up 2% which is exactly where we were yesterday at this time when talking financial experts predicted. that means same kind of day we had yesterday, you may remember the stock market went down just a little bit. you see the big board there, as it's up a little bit. but the stock market's opened to a rally at the moment. yes, you can see that.

so yesterday you see the stock market went up most of the day, and down right at the end of the day to finish 205 points down. now overnight, china's market crashed again. they have lost 16% of their market over the last three day but asian markets rebounded, specifically japan. positive signs for folks here. financial planners here in the united states say that we're seeing a correction, that's where the market dips 10% to 20% and that's it. there's two corrections a year and we haven't had one in the last 12 months so they say it should have a pretty good average day at the stock market today. live from n. washington, edward lawrence, back to you. >> thank you. it is 6:31. tracking the weather for you. of course, the roadways for your morning commute. mike inouye's got his eye on that morning drive. start out with meteorologist kari hall. a look at microclimate forecast. >> hotter in some spots. it will be heating up into the 90s in the tri-valley. and as we take a look outside

now, it's cloudy, it's cool, and average start to the day. but look at what happens this afternoon in the south bay. we're up to 85 degrees. east bay 75 degrees. tri-valley, 94. north bay 88 degrees. san francisco keeps an average 70 degrees with peaks of sunshine today. and the peninsula, 79 degrees. let's get a look at the commute now with mike. >> looking towards san jose, traffic flows this way northbound. we're seeing a lit burst of the traffic flow. let me show you what i'm concerned about here. that may be secondary traffic flow. that is a result of the crash north 87 toward 28 on chp has not told me all lanes are clear, another call in to them. they're very busy. traffic, the speed sensors moving smoothly and faster from 85 toward curtner, crash north of alma blocking one lane. but we have seen more traffic jumping on and slowing north of the capitol expressway for the bay shore freeway. hold steady, i think 87 has just

we'll check back in. we did learn early this morning a man, a woman, and a couple of dogs actually fell off of a cliff and in the process of watching the rescue unfold. the man has been rescued. but the woman is 50 to 100 feet up the clich a couple of options now scale or rappel down the side of the cliff to rescue her or a u.s. national guard, i should say coast guard, has a helicopter they may try to bring her up from. waiting to see what's going to happen. we'll check back in with stephanie. big day now expected in court for the undocumented immigrant accused in the shooting death of kate steinly. prosecutors are going to present ballistics testified that could determine whether lopez sanchez goes to trial. yesterday investigators are testified that tourists captured photographs before and after the july 1st shooting at pier 14 in san francisco. we're not allowed to show you images but we can tell you, none of the photos established the suspect's face. he is accused of killing steinle while she was out for a walk

with her father. 6:36. the possibility of a strong el nino this winter's forcing people to take action now. roofing companies say phones are been ringing off the hook for several months and many booked solid into next year. contractors haven't seen this kind of demand since the el nino back in 1997. that event brought record rains to part of the bay area. now people are trying to think ahead of the storm. >> i haven't prepped for it yet but plan to. i really, really hope that we get it. we need so much rain in california it's unreal. >> meteorologists say there's a 95 to 98% chance of el nino that is headed our way. >> there's our meteorologist right there, jeff ranieri. happening now from the vine to wine, workers are beginning tedious process of selecting every grape from the vineyard in livermore. the big crush. bob redell live at the winery. bob, winemakers, worried?

a bad year for grapes or robust because it's so concentrated? >> reporter: well, laura and sam, depends on who you ask. here in livermore where workers start at 3:00 and just finished picking their chardonnay grapes. look here to the left. two trucks, they've got roughly 24 tons of that crop that they just got done pickingen depends who you ask. yields are down 10% because of the drought. senior manager here believes the lower quantity could have a better quality, lead to a better quau quality. this winery have been prepared. over the past ten years put in new technologies in with management of water. they've been able to grow grapes with 27% reduction in the use of water. they have weather stations, soil moisture probe that shows how much water's on the ground around these roots that you're looking at. they have sap flow sensors that

newsroom. >> yeah, the two journalists out doing the same thing that we do every morning, standing out in the open, doing a live report, we can confirm they were gunned down during that report and the gunman is still on the loose. reporter alison parker on the left, as you mentioned, 24, on the right, photographer adam ward, 27. these are photos from the cbs affiliate in roanoke, virginia where two worked. the tv station confirms the death and asking for prayers. over the air one of the angers say we cover stories of people being shot all the time we realize firsthand what so many have gone through. two were reporting from a shopping center, 25 miles southeast of roanoke at the time of the shooting. in addition to local law enforcement, on the ground right now, we have confirmed the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms involved in the man hunt for the gunman. schools in the area are on lockdown because of the man hunt

our live chopper cam, we watched them rappel down and take the woman off of a cliff. so obviously, happy resolution, looks like a peaceful one in a dangerous situation. >> crews live. abelong that group, stephanie chuang reporting all morning long live. what's the latest? >> yeah, good morning. you've got the good news there successful rescue of the 54-year-old woman from the cliff. we had a view of the chopper. you can see the fire crews wrapping up here. video from earlier shows the chopper taking her. she didn't seem to be mobile but successfully got her, the issue was the dogs. right now the two pit bulls are still there on the cliff. and so they're trying to see what they can do about that, try to get the two pit bulls. woman 54, 27-year-old man hike when theyful here and tumbled down 13450 feet. she was stuck all morning long. he was able to make it up and get help at the hospital.
