moment but first we are tracking the weather and roads. mib is here keeping an eye on your morning commute but we start with meteorologist kari hall with a look at your microclimate forecast. >> good morning. get ready for a hot day. our temperatures start out cool, but it is going to be sizzling for our inland valleys. a look at hose numbers now. it is 66 degrees in the east bay as the sunrises you see it's 54 degrees in the north bay and the south bay 64 degrees. here is a look at those highs, 90 south bay, peninsula 85, east bay will be at 80 today and the tri-valley 99, san francisco 75 and the north bay 92. i will detail those microclimates and look at the weekend forecast coming up. let's get a look at that commute with mike. looking over toward the bay bridge toll plaza where you would expect the backup because the metering lights are on as we've been talking about. meanwhile on the span itself we will look at your map, disabled vehicle just reported somewhere across that span, they are pushing it slowly over towards the fremont off ramp, that will slow folks down a little more.

that is a delay in towards san francisco. temporarily. we are looking over toward the rest of the east bay, a little slowing builds for hayward down in toward union city for southbound 880, no problem for the tri-valley. this your typical pattern heading down in toward fremont. the south bay shows your push 101 and 87 showing more slowing as they cross over the 280 area and in this towards the rest of san jose. palo alto an easy flow, northbound from palo alto heading up in toward redwood city, eventually towards san francisco. back to you. we do have breaking news this morning. crews looking for hot spots after putting out a small brush fire burning in had an area notorious for destructive wildfire. a quarter acre burned near skyline boulevard and grisly peak boulevard. it made it tough for ruse to get there. the fire spread slowly but with hot weather, dry brush surrounding that area firefighters quickly responded not taking any chances.

there is heartache and plenty of tears this morning as a news station in virginia begins to try and cope with the killing of two of its own journalists. >> colleagues at wdbj held a moment of silence had morning to remember alison parker and adam ward, those who knew the young journalists described both as special people who loved getting up each morning to help others get their day started. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuang joining us live from our san francisco newsroom. both parker and ward were about to start new chapters in their personal lives on the verge of it. >> reporter: they were. so is young. alison parker had had just celebrated her 24th birthday with her family and her boyfriend, a coworker at that station, and 27-year-old photographer adam ward was recently engaged, also to a coworker. absolutely heart breaking and this morning a colleagues at wdbj 7 in roanoke, virginia their voices broke as they remembered both parker and ward, virginia natives and former interns at the station.

friends who worked together every morning. ward was set to marry the morning show producer who was actually in the control room when both ward and parker were gunned down on the air. parker and her boyfriend had just moved in together, this morning on the "today" show wdbj anchor chris hurst said he did not watch those videos of the shooting allegedly posted ond social media by vester flanagan. >> what we are starting to see is continued boldness from people who want to commit murders in cold blood for notoriety and he did it to my -- my sweet alison and he did it to adam and i just -- i have no words for him. i have no thoughts for him. >> very emotional. this is what ward's fiancé posted on her facebook yesterday, melissa ott writing in part, you were the one, you understood she, my soul mate, i will always love you, please watch over me and keep me strong. enjoy the endless tech games in

your etch had. i love you so much. we understand she got her wedding dress delivered yesterday and hurst recalling this morning how he last sent off parker with a kiss yesterday morning. so these are the tidbits of course that really hit us emotionally. meantime we do understand that memorial scholarships are being established in had parker's and ward's name. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> just been lumps in our throats for a day now. the third shooting vic it tim is getting better this morning, her condition improves to good overnight after emergency surgery. vicky gardner is the head of a local can chamber of commerce in virginia. she was the one being interviewed on live tv when she, too, was shot. >> now the gunman, vester flanagan, he grew up in oakland and went to san francisco state. now his family is expressing remorse and certainly sadness over the tragic deaths. flan began known as bryce williams in some tv markets

entered kpix after receiving a degree at san francisco state. his last listed bay area address was in vallejo where he lived for several years near his father vester, sr., a former nfl player. the 41-year-old grew up in oakland where he attended public schools. yesterday a family friend delivered a message from the flanagan family. >> it is with heavy hearts and deep sadness we express our deepest condolences to the families of alison parker and adam ward. our thoughts and prayers at this time are with the victims' families. >> flanagan worked several television jobs, he ended up at wdbj in virginia in 2012, but was reportedly fired the next year after incidents of anger. >> shortly after that shooting the gunman posted his video of the murders for millions of facebook and twitter users alike to see. that video was captured on a body camera he was wearing during the shooting. we are only showing you a freeze frame. it showed the shooter's perspective and horrified social

media users. >> as twisted as that sounds social media savvy on the part of this killer. that is a terrible, terrible thing to consider. >> the posted video was quickly discovered and taken down by both facebook and twitter. san francisco state associate broadcast professor miriam smith doesn't see how more could have been done to stop it. >> how could you -- how could you regulate everything? i mean, if you would like lee users, yes, but we have millions. i mean, facebook is a -- facebook could be its own country. >> hit says it's up to social media users to govern themselves and she praises pursued by police and twitter for responding to user complaints and acting immediately to remove that video. our coverage of this story continues throughout the morning, we will have a live report from virginia coming up in our next half hour. now to a developing story, this out of louisiana, a police officer is dead, several others hurt after a domestic dispute

reportedly took a dangerous turn. authorities say the suspect who has not yet been identified stabbed three women inside of a home and then shot an officer as he was arriving on scene. that officer along with one of the stabbing vic timts later died. after the shooting the suspect drove off and eventually rammed into the front of a nearby minimart. he then barricaded himself inside of an office. officers were eventually able to take him into custody. >> new details on the deadly shooting along the embarcadero in san francisco. we're learning the vic i'm it, kate steinle may have been shot accidentally. during a preliminary hearing yesterday experts testified it appears the bullet may have ricocheted off the concrete walkway and hit steinle in the back. san francisco police investigators disagree, saying the gun was pointed in a straight line to the victim. juan francisco lopez-sanchez an undocumented immigrant is accused of killing steinle in july. the preliminary hearing continues today. developing right now, police looking for a hit and run driver in santa clara who sparked a massive strip mall fire that is

still smoldering this morning. >> the charred vip mall is at the intersection of lawrence expressway and poinciana drive just north of el camino. "today in the bay" kris sanchez live at the scene to explain who police are looking for this morning. >> reporter: good morning. the police are looking for the driver who hit a gas meter and sparked that whole fire and firefighters are watching for potential hot spots. you see the ladder still looming over the scene will of that destroyed plaza this morning. here is a look at the scene by daylight, though. gas fueled that fire for more than four hours. pg&e could not cap that line immediately because they say they didn't want to disrupt service to all the folks who live in this area. it is a densely populated area here near poinciana drive just north of el camino. now, a restaurant, bar, laundromat, salon and liquor store are in ash, gone in what seemed like a heartbeat to the people who live here. >> a big, big -- very like a

bomb. >> it moved fast. within half an hour the whole shopping center was on fire. >> reporter: now, one of the business owners says that a man in the parking lot realized that fire would say burning and urged people to get out before anyone got hurt and yet a firefighter and one person in the laundromat did suffer minor injury. today investigators are looking at the surveillance video from the camera on a convenience sore just down the way within our line of view. they are looking to see if perhaps the license plate of a white hond at that accord was captured on that surveillance video. that could lead them to the driver who sparked this whole disaster. am in santa clara, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." 6:09. right is a good color to wear today because you are going to be feeling some heat. >> it will be a warm day across the bay. yes, short sleeves today and we are starting out with some 60s in the east bay, while san

francisco up to 61 degrees now and a high of 75 degrees on the embarcadero. in palo alto 86 degrees, san jose 90 degrees, and look at gilroy, 101. we will also see highs over 100 degrees in livermore. fremont up to 89 degrees. it will be warm today, but ten cooling off in time for the weekend. i will show you those numbers coming you up. let's get a look at that commute with mike. good morning. good morning. look over here, westbound 80 going a bit better. over the last 15 minutes we saw things really slow down across that bay bridge in towards san francisco. you see traffic, though, moving through that treasure island tunnel. let's look at your map. across that span it does look like a slow drive in your chute direction from oakland over in towards the san francisco side because of an earlier disabled vehicle. we have recovery on the san francisco said, but then we have the build coming off the east shore and off of the maze. so we'll see that. typical pattern on the approach to the bay bridge, the span itself is slow in toward the

city. a build for highway 4 and 580 in toward livermore. by the time you get to the dublin interchange you're fine as far as that tri-valley goes. just heard about a crash leaving one vehicle for southbound 880. expect slowing there. in the south bay itself northbound 101 not so bad. the first burst has calmed down, now at about 6:30, 6:40 we will tart to see traffic building. between 7:00 and 9:00 is the worst for the south bay. back to you. coming up, how about something uplifting? we're honoring a hero locally, the sacramento state student opens up about all the attention he has been getting lately. a ea ari toy f a njo ci woer are

a plea hearing later today for a san jose city worker charged with sharing lewd potatoes with a 15-year-old girl. police say he lured had her into a relationship through social media. now officers want to know if 25-year-old mark joseph west took advantage of other girls as well that he might have met through his job at the camden community center gym. west was arrested back in july after a six-month relationship with that 15-year-old and he is

charged right now with two felony counts of sharing lewd material with a minor and four counts of molestation. also in court, the harvard educated lawyer accused am that bizarre kidnapping in vallejo but today he is facing charges from a similar one in dublin. matthew mueller, in that case the owners fought back and a he fled but left behind a cellphone that investigators used to track him down in tahoe. that's when police say they discovered a pair of googless with a single vand of lond blond hair that synched him to the can kidnapping of denise huskins. one of the americans who helped take town a sus p spec'ed terrorist opened up for the first time since returning home to sacramento. >> this is my home and i'm just glad to be back here o see everybody. it's kind of overwhelming for me, i didn't expect all this to to happen. >> 23-year-old anthony sadler is a senior at sacramento state university. he and two childhood friends

were on vacation in europe when they took down a terror suspect on a train last friday. yesterday sadler's hometown honored him for his courage and brave bravery. while raising sadler the city's mayor who is also a former nba player provided mother lighthearted moment. >> all the pictures of you over in europe you had a laker -- a laker jersey on. so -- so is -- >> i love that. so now sadler has got that kings jersey. he is studies kin ease yolg and says he wants to be a sports doctor for the nba. now, as for his two friends spencer stone and alex skarlatos both u.s. soldiers are resting and recovering in am europe at an air base in germany. the mayor says once they are all together again in sacramento he is going to hold that heroes parade for them, sam.

if the kings get bounce there from mr. sadler, maybe wall street will get a bounce, more of one today after that recovery yesterday. it's the question traders are asking 15 minutes before the opening bell. stocks soared higher yesterday following six straight days of heavy losses. the dow picked up 619 point, that was the third largest ever point gain. it appears that a trend could be in the works because china's stocks have rebounded more than 5% today. dow futures are trading higher by merely 4%. san francisco based gap is ending a controversial practice that gave workers little or no notice about their schedules a. they will stop using on call scheduling by the end of next month. gap will now give employees 10 to 14 days notice as part of a push to improve their quality of life and work life balance. gap got a warning letter from the new york attorney general's office saying such practices violated state law. it looks like it is full speed ahead on a pilot program

that is going to allow ride sharing companies to continue to operate at sfo. taxi drivers have be opposed to that plan. they say they are taking a major hit from companies like uber and lyft so taxi drivers held protests about it including one yesterday in san francisco. it despite all that sfo is all in on ride sharing with leaders saying the program is being extended at least through february. 6:18. one bay area company believes also a solution to the doubt that may be sitting in your backyard. >> how about using it to harvest rain water. that is the pitch were a landscape company called rocsi designs based in the east bay. later today they are going to roll out their first demonstration of a rain harvesting technology using tanks and otherwise empty swimming pools. the kwp says it can provide at least three months' worth of irrigation water. if they happen to be full and your trepd has a pool you

are going to need it today. >> yes. hopefully with real pool water i suppose would be the case. >> we only have a very little bit -- amount of rain in the forecast and not all of us will see that. i will detail that in just a bit. let's get a live look outside as you wake up had morning. we are checking out the bay bridge and with the sunrise this morning nice and clear, no worries about position and it will be a warm one as those temperatures heat up and also looking from tiburon we see that there are no low clouds this morning and the temperature is at 61 degrees in san francisco, livermore 64 degrees, also 64 in san jose, and highs today will be topping out at a 90 degrees, los gatos 89 and san mateo 82 degrees, san francisco mid 70s today, napa 89 degrees, concord 96, look at how hot it will be even in the tri-valley, up to 101 degrees. thankfully this does not last

out once again. let's get a look at the commute now with mike. we're looking at actually a better drive over the last few minutes. improvement for the bay bridge in the morning commute. here is the deal, you see it the smoothly driving traffic, it will ache a few moments for our sensors to catch up, getting to orange may be more accurate. that earlier stalled vehicle has been cleared over to the san francisco side. reminder over here, giants play at 12:45. midday game. southbound 880 moves smoothly toward thornton but at thornton there is a crash in your two middle lanes. you are jamming up down past dakota and union city in toward fremont. the rest of your commute moves smoothly beside that. p we move out toward highway 4 you do see a little bit more antioch and concord in toward 242. coming up, houses of children at risk for hepatitis

former san francisco 49er ray mcdonald is now charged with raping an intoxicated woman. late yesterday the santa clara county d.a. charged mcdonald after a grand jury indicted him on rape charges. here is some video of the former 9er leaving jail earlier this

year after domestic violence charges. mcdonald is accused of raping a woman at his san jose home last december. >> the jury was convinced by the testimony of the vic i'm it in this case. that what took place between her and mr. mcdonald was knots something that she wished to take place. >> mcdonald claims the woman had had consensual sex several times with him. he now faces a maximum of eight years in prison if convicted. another part of this story involves a current player, ahmad brooks. he is charged with misdemeanor sexual battery against the same woman on the same night. this is brooks' third run with the law since 2008. the 49ers responded last night saying, quote, we take any charge against a member of this organization seriously and are in communication with the nfl. ahmad is returning openly to california and will not participate in saturday's game. the team is in denver getting ready for this weekend's pre-season game against the broj

won't be that way this afternoon. a look at those temperatures, 54 degrees in the north bay, san francisco 61 degrees and a few clouds, you can see the sunrise there. as we go into the day expect highs up to 90 in the south bay, peninsula 85 degrees, the east bay will be at 80 and 99 degrees in the tri-valley. hot today, but not so hot it this weekend. i will detail that coming up in a few minutes. let's see how the roads are moving now with mike. overall a things are moving really nicely. the earlier stall across the bay bridge has been cleared and who has recovery will. you see slowing for the tri-valley, a bit for west 580. the biggest issue is south 880, slowing down a little extra down through hayward and into union city. an earlier crash left a vehicle spun around in the middle of the roadway at horn ton. that's about will for a half hour but chp says they are clearing the area. you saw that slower drive down through that portion. getting up to oakland we have a

tragically cut short. the main question is everyone is asking is why. the man claiming to be the gunman, faxed a 23-page document to abc a news in which he describes himself as a human powder keg just ready to go boom. colleagues describe alison parker and adam ward as special people, the kind who were up before sunrise to put in long hours reporting the news. their off camera lives were just as busy. parker had had recently moved in with her boyfriend, ward was engaged to be married. >> if i walked into the office in the morning and first person i saw was adam or al some i got a smile on my face. >> they were interviewing a local a official live wednesday morning for wdbj when authorities say 41-year-old vester lee flanagan a former colleague, opened fire, killing parker and ward. he also filmed the shooting and posted it to social media later as he was pursued by police before he eventually turned the gun on himself. >> it's obvious that there

was -- this gentleman was disturbed in some way of the way things had transpired at some point am his life it would appear things were spiraling out of control. >> flanagan who was hired from the station two years ago went by the name bryce williams we be he worked there. management describes him as an angry employee. >> after a while a number of incidents we thought it was best if he left the company and he did, but not happily. we had to get some assistance from the police to get him out of here. reporter: meanwhile, a growing memorial outside wdbj is focused on the lives of parker and ward. late wednesday the community came together to mourn their loss. the station used to covering the news now the center of a tragic story of its own. and the woman being interviewed live when the shooting started was also hit. this morning she is in good condition. meanwhile scholarships are being established in the names of both

parker and ward. parker's will go to someone interested in a career in media. laura and sam, back to you. >> a nice way to honor her memory. as sara mentioned adam ward the photographer was engaged to a morning show producer at the same station. his fiancé was in the control room watching as the shooting unfolded on live tv. it was her last day at that station. she had accepted a position in charlotte and ward planned to follow her will soon. >> 24-year-old alison parker also found love at work. her boyfriend kris hurts is an anchor at the station. they had just word if moved in together. he said they were paurt of a tight fit news family and loved her job at the station. >> it was about two lives lost that were a part of this family, two people who loved this job and loved their fiancé and boyfriend immensely. >> you can hear more from parker's boyfriend, chris hurst this morning on the "today" show starting at 7:00 a.m. and you can watch had a right here after

"today in the bay" on nbc bay area. in the meantime parker's father also released a statement ag he is consumed by grief and loss. he writes, quote, not hearing her voice again crushes my soul. our family can only take solace in the fact that although her life was brief she was so happy with it. >> and he actually also said that he spoke with her on the phone every single day just adding to the pain. >> nice to see that slows relationship. >> this story stretches here to the bay area. the gunman vester flanagan, kbru up here in the bay area. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuang is live in our newsroom in san francisco and, steph, o hose who knew flanagan paint a different picture of him. >> reporter: they do. they knew him a while back, but they called him a, quote, soft-spoken gentle giant. disturbingly a polar opposite description of what he has been accused of which is beguning down two former colleagues in cold flood. vester flanagan grew up in the bay area mostly in oakland, went to san francisco state,

graduating in 1995 with a degree in radio and tv. he started his intern as an intern and production assistant at the local cbs station. he was in and out of the business with stints in customer service at times at bank of america and pg&e before returning to tv news in north carolin carolina. >> he came over to our house and gave us a card and told us thank you for being great neighbors and i'm actually going back to the east coast to be a reporter. >> wdbj general manager jeff marks says the station fired flanagan two years ago because he was too difficult to work with and had to actually call police to escort him out on that day. plan began sued the station alleging risism but the equally employment opportunity commission dismissed those claims. here in the bay area yesterday a family friend read a statement behalf of flanagan's family expressing sadness and condolences to the victims'

cruelty charges. we will show you the video but warn you it is very disturbing to watch. prosecutors say linda levick is the woman in this video, she is seen picking up a dog and slams it to the ground and a hits it. levick is a dog sitter and after seeing the video workers from the humane society and spca went to her home and seized 11 dogs in her care. the dog in the video we are happy to say is doing okay. a high profile court proceeding now, former chinatown gang leaderer raymond chow is in court today. they will argue that charges should be dropped because the government they say is selectively prosecuting him. chow is set to stand trial on federal racketeering charges in movie. he and seven other defendants are accused of allegedly running a crime organization with links to former state senator leland yee. things have been warming up around here, summer hanging on. >> it's getting toasty but maybe not into the weekend. >> had this weekend will be so

the markets are moving. meghan trainor style earlier this morning at 6:44. a look at the dow jones industrial average which is showing early signs of life, up 230 points or about 1.5% to start early trading. now to a developing story out of louisiana. a police officer is dead, several others hurt after a domestic dispute reportedly took a dangerous turn. authorities say a suspect who has not been identified stabbed lee women inside a home and also shot an officer arriving on

scene. the officer along with one of the stabbing victims later today. after the shooting the suspect drove off and eventually rammed into the front of a nearby minimart. he then barricaded himself inside an office. officers were eventually able to take him into custody. happening today, it is a touching tribute to an indy car driver who died earlier in the week. this afternoon indy drivers will be driving across the iconic golden gate bridge to honor the life of justin wilson. wilson died monday from a head injury that he suffered when a piece of debris struck him during a race. wilson trove for andretti autosport and today marco andretti is going to be behind the wheel of wilson's number 25 car for that tribute. they will then head off to sonoma raceway where the championship race will take place this weekend. president obama will be in new orleans ahead of the tenth anniversary of hurricane katrina. saturday marks ten years since hurricane katrina made land fall. since then had the focus has

been on rebuilding. today the president will visit various neighborhoods in new orleans affected by the hurricane. estimates put that damage from katrina at more than a billion dollars. new details on that deadly shooting along the embarcadero in san francisco. we're learning that the victim kate steinle may have actually been shot accidentally. during a preliminary hearing yesterday experts testified that it appears the bullet ricocheted off the concrete walkway and hit steinle in the back. but san francisco police investigators disagree, saying the gun was pointed in a straight line to the victim. juan francisco lopez-sanchez an undocumented immigrant is accused of killing steinle back in july. the preliminary hearing will continue today. police officers are expected to hit the streets of san francisco, this in response to the recent shooting of a tourist in the russian hill neighborhood. two men stole a camera from that tourist, he was shot as he was trying to fight back. the suspects were arrested after a high speed chase across the bay bridge. >> our message is to anybody else had who is thinking of

even faster and a look now at this beautiful sunrise. such a nice start to the day, but, yeah, it will be a hot one as we start out with not a lot of clouds, no fog and that -- that will be what we see throughout the day, all of that sun, as we start out now at 61 degrees in san francisco, it is 54 degrees in the north bay. look at the highs this afternoon. 90 degrees in the south bay, peninsula 85 degrees, east bay 80 degrees and 99 degrees just scorching temperatures in the tri-valley. san francisco up to 75 and the north bay at 92, but there's some relief in this forecast and maybe a little bit of some rain. there will be a storm system moving on shore, we can tell by the direction of the winds by those lines there in the green shows where the rain will be. as it moves if it unfortunately a lot of this rain dries up, but maybe in huff to bring in had some showers for the north bay. clouds and windy conditions and our temperatures dropping and a look at the future cast, this

shows what the clouds and rain could look like as we go into the next couple of days. there will be more cloud cover tomorrow so temperatures won't be as hot. as that front moves in on saturday we do see the slight chance of rain moving in early saturday morning. here we are 8:00. there may be some spotty showers but it doesn't look like we will all see that. then the clouds lingering for part of the day. the estimated rain for the weekend, no the a lot, just a few rain drops for the north bay and along the coast ukiah could get .05 of an inch but at this point anything helps. this weekend once those cooler temperatures arrive it will be in the 70s and 80s, around 70 degrees in san francisco, the tri-valley will be in the lower 80s, a lot of sun after those clouds roll out of here during the morning. let's get a look at the commute with mike. we have a shot of the bay bridge toll plaza. i just pulled this one up for the report because we just got reports of a crash involving a motorcycle somewhere in the

backup. i'm going to get an update. there may be additional slowing as we have activity at least a distraction right here. the map will show you you have a slower drive coming up 880. the earlier stall clear but that's what kicked off additional slowing and slowing metering lights as well. that backs folks up off the maze and the east shore freeway we have the build as well. as we zoom out the maze and approach the only slow down south 880 should see quick improvement as the crack at dakota and horn ton have cleared off the roadways. improvement out of the of dumbarton bridge but jammed from the san mateo bridge down to highway 84 and across that san mateo bridge the earlier stall has activity on the shoulder. south bay and fremont should see more traffic, a live shot past the truck scale moving well, though. something else now continuing to perplex marine biologists what to do with another dead whale. it this time it turned up in alameda. you can see it's lodged under a dock. this is in the oakland es. it uary.

times this morning where the community is remembering the lives of reporter alison parker and photographer adam ward. >> certainly pain that's being felt here as well. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang joining us live from our san francisco news room. steph, these two journalists were really just beginning their lives. >> reporter: they were. so young, sam and laura. a reporter alison parker just celebrated her 24th birthday and 27-year-old photographer adam ward had had just proposed to a coworker in april. very recently. this this morning colleagues at wdbj 7 in roanoke, virginia held a moment of silence in tribute to both parker and ward. virginia natives and friends who worked together every morning. ward was set to mary a morning show producer who was in the control room watching, her last day at the station when both ward and parker were gunned down on the air. this is what his fiancé posted on facebook. in part writing i'm not okay and i won't be for a long time but the enormous outpouring of love and support from so many of you near and far is so much appreciated. we understand also she got her
