to 92 degrees in the south bay. east bay 81, tri-valley 95, north bay 93 and 77 degrees in san francisco. i will talk more about those temperatures and a nice cool down for the weekend. it's coming up. let's get a look at how the roads are moving with mike. laura and sam have that beautiful sunrise behind them, we're looking at the opposite angle, we're looking it at this beautiful drive in towards san francisco. not so bad across that bay bridge, well populated span, we will look at the bay bridge toll plaza there is enough traffic on the span they got these metering lights moving quickly, a lighter volume episcopal things as a minimum backup but the metering lights are on. that's about the only real slowing around the way. no problems for the maze or upper east shore freeway. a little build for that richmond san rafael bridge. a smooth drive and a little build for highway 4. out of concord and antioch as well. 580 a little slowing toward livermore and that burst of traffic now starting to kick

this north 101 at 680 in san jose. on the peninsula passive flames ripping through an apartment complex in san mateo last night. now more than a dozen people are left without a place to live this this morning. >> this happened at an apartment complex off la selva avenue right along highway 101. "today in the bay" kris sanchez is there live with but details. >> reporter: good morning. what a day for those residents who were displaced by that fire this morning they're waking up outside of their homes. we can show you why, here is new video of one of the apartments that was destroyed by the fire had had morning, even the sheetrock on the inside of the house you can see through the window is just gone and it is no wonder. those flames were voracious as the fire burned just before 10:00 last night and before it was over seven apartments were rendered unlivable. firefighters say as bad as it looks from the outside it was worst on the inside because that fire did burn am some of the attic space. because the fire started before 10:00 last night not too late,

most folks were still awake and able to get out safely. in fact, there were no major injuries from the fire, though one firefighter did suffer a muscle strain. foster city police also warned people about an hour or so after the fire started that there would be heavy smoke in the area and some folks did report to us it was visible from near the highway 101 highway 92 interchange that's just across the retaining wall from where we are right now. that smoke has mostly dissipated this this morning. 14 people were displaced, it could have been much worse, this is a very big apartment complex and the apartments are very tightly packed together. those folks who were forced out of their home by the fire last night were getting assistance from the red cross. in san mateo, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." it will take months for the ntsb to reveal what caused a small plane to crash near the san carlos airport. that plane crashed off of highway 101 yesterday. it took off from the airport just before 5:30 and crashed right outside the runway.

the pilot amazingly walked away from all that wreckage a life and healthy. >> looks like the pilot is out. >> he's out. that's wonderful. >> the redwood city police and fire and sheriff's department got here quickly. airport staff was here on duty and the pilot got out and was standing to the airplane when they got there. the power is back on this morning after a transformer explosion in milpitas. the explosion knocked out power to thousands of people. south main near montague expressway finally reopened late last night. this is close to the great mall. pg&e says underground equipment blew in front of a jack in the box. two people turned themselves in in connection with the fiery explosion at a shopping center in santa clara. police say the driver of a white honda drove into the poinciana plaza's gas line wednesday.

that sparked the explosion. the driver 47-year-old sara de segura took off. she along with 40-year-old samuel donas surrendered to police yesterday. his involvement in the says is unclear. as for the strip mall, much of it is destroyed. yesterday employees and customers came out to see the damage left behind. >> getting a close look at the way it's destroyed and the card remains, it's pretty tough to see. >> more concerned about my employees, a lot of them are single pores. police say the suspects are cooperating. a south bay surveillance camera captured a hit and run suspect volg away from a fatal crash. now police are trying to track down that driver. officers say that this man was behind the wheel, you see him kind of blurred there, when he jumped on to the curb on huron drive right by welch park and hit a woman on the sidewalk there. we are not showing the is suspect's face so that we don't compromise the police investigation. when paramedics arrived on scene the woman was dead.

investigators traced the car involved in the crash and say had a it was stolen. happening today, taking a closer look at a lifesaving drug with heroin use exploding in san francisco, police are now arming themselves with a new tool. today we will learn more about how it works. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang live in our san francisco newsroom this morning. steph, heroin isn't the only drug had a they are targeting here. >> reporter: it's not. in fact, public health officials saying that they are turning more attention to this as more people are turning to street drugs after a crack down on prescription drugs. the solution, both police and public health officials say part of it is naloxone or narcan which is what you're seeing, it's a drug that reverses the effects of an overdose, san francisco was the first city in a state to actually publicly pay for its distribution to people like drug treatment workers and that was in 2003 but now the police are trying it out. public health officials say this is a critical step in preventing deaths as new drugs hit town

like one called tent nl. >> when you have something like fentanyl posing at heroin and people are trying big apartment complex that and not realizing it it's much more potent. we saw that causing a huge increase am ÷e >> reporter: the public health department says narcan use is up in the city. in july of this year it revered 75 overdoses compared to 25 in july of last year. outreach workers from groups like glad memorial church are training police officers on how to use it with a nasal kit not the injection method. we will learn more on the progress and details of this two year pilot program at 12:30 this afternoon from sfpd. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." developing right now, tropical storm erica is rumbling toward puerto rico after slamming the caribbean island of dominica. had a storm caused flooding and landslides killing at least four people. had morning rescue crews are still searching for more than 20 others reported missing in that storm. here is a live look right now at the radar. you can see that erica is expected to strengthen into a

are here to break it all down for us. >> reporter: yes, within the past few hours overnight the white house announcing they will be providing millions of dollars for the flex tech alliance, that's head quartered in this building behind me in san jose. they will help pioneer the next generation of bendable and wearable devices. now, the secretary of defense, ash carter, along with the mayor of san jose and local congress men and women will be making an announcement the at an event at 11:00 at moffett field in mountain view. the flex tech alliance will receive $171 million, 75 of that coming from uncle cam, the remainder from local government and private groups. this an alliance which is made up of over 160 companies, nonprofits, labs and universities will be expected to develop new flexible hybrid technologies. if you are not familiar we are talking about things like sensors that are lightweight and

right now to try to identify the victims and figure out how they died. investigators are not releasing any more details but authorities say the suspects were arrested in hungary. the morning anchor for wdbj said on air today as the station started its newscast two days after alison parker and adam ward were killed on live television. last night hundreds of people gathered outside the station for a candlelight vigil to remember the young journalists. parker a reporter and ward her photographer was shot and killed by a disgruntled former station employee vester flanagan. it happened during a live interview early wednesday morning. senseless shootings like these always send the conversion issue of gun control back into the headlines, now alison parker's father is tackling that issue head on. >> how many times are we going to see an incident like this happen, you know, newtown,

flanagan's car and found six magazines of ammunition, 17 stamped letters, three license plates and a wig. wdbj fired flanagan two years ago, the police were called to escort him out. a situation executive says plan began vowed that he would, quote, make headlines the day he was fired. >> he handed a wooden cross to the news director who was at that time dan dennison and he said, you'll immediate it. >> court documents show that parts of the altercation were actually recorded by adam ward. the photographer that was killed. even after flanagan was fired he continued to live at an apartment in -- it was pretty close to the tv station. this is video from inside his one bedroom apartment. police say a computer hard drive was gone but the refrigerator still covered with boat he is toes of flanagan. police say flanagan who grew up in oakland killed parker and ward then killed himself while being chased by police.

then the south bay it's in the mid 60s. look at these highs. this afternoon it will be up to 92 degrees in the south bay, north bay 93 degrees, east bay 81, tri-valley 95. very hot still. even into the next couple of days there will be some major changes coming this way. we have had high pressure moving in, it's been fighting back that on-shore flow, it will still be hot in the valleys again today, but temperatures dropping by at least 10 degrees this weekend and that will bring some much needed relief after dealing with some sizzling temperatures the past couple of days. today we will start to see some high clouds streaming in, this is what the cloud cover could look like across the bay area and here we have tomorrow morning at 9:00 and we see some green here. that shows that there could be some rain, but it looks like it makes it into the north bay and then fizzles out before it makes it into the rest of the bay area. so maybe some trace amounts of main there and a lot of rain

expected over in the atlantic ocean and some of those bordering areas of florida as well as the southeastern u.s. it could move in as a tropical storm as early as sunday into monday. something that will be making the headlines there. we're also tracking what's happening in the pacific ocean, hurricane ignacio, wind speeds at 90 miles an hour and could continue to strengthen as it moves closer it to hawaii. if you have plans to go there or if you have friends or family will, you may want to call and check on them and make sure they are doing okay as we head into the beginning of next week. this weekend we will have nice calm quiet weather, much cooler conditions, highs in the 70s and 80s, tri-valley will be at about 82 can degrees on sunday, the south bay up to 85 degrees tomorrow. so some great weather this weekend. let's see if the commute is look great this morning. it's looking great because of this beautiful sunrise, one of the pew shots i can share with you like that.

there you go. nicely lit towers. that's great scenery. a nice flow of traffic west 92, flowing well across that san mateo bridge. a little slowing shows up as you come across 92, not much. once in awhile showing up in the decline on that flat section as you travel westbound. we do have a new report of a crash southbound 880 behind that marker at industrial parkway. i'm going to track that. chp still arriving on even scene will as well as this new report of a breakdown somewhere in the sunol areas. no details. i don't know if it's southbound but does show slowing around that 84 exit. crash west 580 past the dublin interchange, all that activity for that one map. the rest of why you are bay moves slowly, south bay no problem. there is the slowing for 580 out uft altamonte pass. the bay bridge toll plaza does have the backup. filling am all lanes but clearing by the time you get to west grand.

millions of dollars for charity going unused in california. every single year californians donate millions of dollars toward charitable causes on their tax forms but a new report from the "associated press" is showing that nearly a third of that money has gone unsent over the last ten years. that includes money for colon cansing screenings, youth programs and aid for military families. the report blames a bureaucratic maze that delays contributions and a let's donations slip right through the cracks. a bid from l.a. to host the

now those people have been moving to heroin adding there are other new drugs like fentanyl that are pushing up the number of overdoses and that's where this drug naloxone or narcan comes this. outreach workers are training bliss on how to use narcan with a nasal kit. >> you can't do treatment when you're dead so let's save you from the overdose. we trained law enforcement because 75% of the time they are first responders. >> reporter: and the public health officials says narcan use has significantly cut down on the number of heroin overdose deaths from 120 in 2000 to ten each year. there are promising numbers there. the police chief says he wants every patrol car to carry one of these kits. we will learn more at a press conference at 10:30. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." 637 right now on your friday. this is the best forecast of the

at 6:00 had 44. the oakland police officer who shot and a killed a man yesterday remains in the hospital this morning. investigators say she opened fire after the suspect attacked her. >> i've been struck in the head by the is suspect. >> this is the officer's call for help. police say the suspect was trespassing at an apartment complex and started assaulting a resident there. when the officer arrived police say the pan a acted her with a metal chain. she suffered cuts to the head. neighbors say the suspect was a transient with mental issues. new details now of another officer's gun stolen right out

of a car. this morning we know know who the weapon belonged to. that happened wednesday morning at the shopping sent err near the fruitvale station in oakland. the weapon belonged to a hayward police officer. this this marks the third time an officer's gun has been stolen. friday someone broke into the car of the uc berkeley police chief as she was jogging in richmond. back in june someone stole a federal agent's gun in san francisco. a bullet interest that gun ultimately killed kate steinle along the san francisco embarcadero. that shooting on the embarcadero has now prompted a new bill from state lawmakers. juan francisco lopez-sanchez is accused of murder for that shooting on pier 14. sanchez is undocumented immigrant and has been deported several times. where he had republican state lawmakers introduced a bill to restrict local law enforcement from seeking custody of accused criminals scheduled for deportation. sanchez was transferred from

federal to located at custody on a drug charge but was then released when prosecutors decided to pursue the kill. hawaii's volcano is active again. the lava has move more than a half a mile in 24 hours, it's heading toward a subdivision of homes about three piles away. so far there are no reports of injuries or accidents from the flow. it's fascinating to watch from a distance. >> the visual, yeah, is crazy. a man in idaho is recovering after a large boulder fell on him while he was rock climbing into it was his 13-year-old son who helped save his life. >> the boulder fell on him and hen he kind of tumbled down like 20 or 30 more feet. >> charlie was on a 12-day backpacking trip with his tad in remote idaho wilderness, the two were rock climbing when a refrigerator sized boulder pell on charlie's pear breaking his

arm and leg. charlie relied on his boy scout training to stay calm. >> at first i was freaking out a little bit, but after a few minutes it was -- i kind of calmed down and thought i have to help him out, get his sleeping bag and stuff. >> charlie helped his dad bandage his wound and ran a mile back to camp to get supplies for the night. the next day charlie helped his tad crawl back to camp. then the 13-year-old set off alone carrying a note from his dad to get help. charlie hiked about five miles, ended up meeting a man who ran another eight miles to find help. charlie's dad eventually airlifted to the hospital where he is now recovering. isn't that a story? >> like a relay team. one stop to the next. most adults would have been freaking out if something like that happened to your family member. >> when you see your little boy go away hoping to help and you're hoping he is okay. >> boy scout skills kicked in. >> our skills right now are all

about staying cool on a day that is going to be another hot one. >> the last day we will have to use those survival skills to stay cool, this weekend it will be much more comfortable. take a look at this view from at&t park, absolutely gorgeous as we start out with an unusual clear sunrise, but with all of that sun today it will heat up those temperatures and quickly today. we are already in in the mid 60s and we should be about 10 degrees cooler in many spots. in the north bay it is at a nice cool 58 degrees and it will be hot in the south bay, up to 92 today, 93 in the north bay, 81 in the east bay, 95 in the tri-valley. san francisco still fairly warm, 77 degree and the peninsula up to 85. we do have some major changes headed this way and it starts out with more cloud cover later on this afternoon and then into the evening. then a cans of rain for the north bay early tomorrow morning it looks like it only moves into

the north bay and then kind of dries up before it makes it into the rest of the bay area but then the skies clear, temperatures drop, it will be breezy and much cooler by this time tomorrow. the estimated rain computer models are giving very light amounts, for the north bay up around uk wra it could be .05 of an inch and maybe .01 of an inch, basically drizzle there. it won't be much to effect the drought. what to bust the drought in florida to be tropical storm erica. it this storm is really falling apart. the upper level winds are working on the storm and it could continue to weaken. expect it to move hoo florida only as a tropical storm into the next couple of days. we will be watching that in the headlines. also hurricane ygnacio in the pacific, this one could also be very strong as it moves closer to hawaii, but the current tracks brings it a few degrees farther to the north of the

at 6:55. new details to tell you about. several families actually homeless this morning after flames tore through their apartments late last night. >> "today in the bay" kris sanchez is live at that complex along la selva avenue in san mateo with more on what's left behind. >> reporter: 14 people are out of their homes and this is the reason why. take a look at the video we got this morning of one of the five apartments that was destroyed by that fire on la selva here am san mateo last night. investigators aren't saying at that what sparked is yet but they're saying it spread quickly through attic space. the flames were voracious though everyone was able to make it out safely because it was just before 10:00 and folks were still awake. there were folks who can could not return home last might, the red cross is helping them today. if you drove nearby in san mateo or foster city or lived nearby and you smelled the smoke or saw it, this is the reason why.

in san mateo, kris sanchez, "today in the bay". i'm stephanie chuang in our san francisco news room with details on a new program used by san francisco police that they say will save lives on the streets. thanks to funding were the san francisco public health department officers are carrying narcan or naloxone, a drug that reverses the effects of overdoses or opioids like heroin and other drugs getting popular like fentanyl. sfpd saved a man who almost died of an overdose. they are now training police officers how to administer the drug, health officials say narcan use is up in san francisco reversing 75 overdoses in july compared to 25 in july of last year. at 12:30 we will get an update from san francisco police on the progress and details of this two year pilot program. in our san francisco newsroom, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." i'm bob redell this san
