front overhead. eventually moves off sunshine and cool temperatures. can you see a powerful storm system across the pacific northwest. for us here at home trailing cold front, it is fall apart. you can see cloud cover and sprinkle activity in the north bay over golden gate bridge where ground is wet. we'll call it sprinkle. not a lot of measurable precipitation. temperatures in the 70s, close to 80s. as cold front moves through, instead of 90s back in the mid-80s for north bay, south bay and tri-valley, coastline inner bay, east bay peninsula expecting temperatures very comfortable and low- to mid-70s. a little breezier but expecting sunshine. >> can't wait to see sunshine. >> we begin with breaking news.

highway 101 in burlingame will be closed both directions until 5:00 this afternoon. the major closure is in both directions. it all started around 9:30 when a third party construction crew hit pg&e transmission tower and knocked high-voltage wires on the roadway near broadway avenue. it forced people to come to a complete stop. folks stuck in their cars six hours. pg&e were able to deenergize power lines and get people off the freeway. amazingly no one was injured. >> all the way to 92, a long back-up. we're telling people take alternate routes, 280. that was very lucky based on what happened. >> they confirmed the crash caused lights to flicker at the giants game, you see there. many neighborhoods in san francisco and along the peninsula impacted as well.

drivers today are encouraged to take el camino real or 280. new this morning, people without a home following a fire that destroyed a two-story building. it ignited at a boarding care home on 3rd street near san jose. twelve units were burned. no one was hurt. we have new details this morning, uproar in an east bay neighborhood over where a convicted rapist could live once he's a free man. the state wants to house 51-year-old frasier smith in a concord home. many people on amherst way say they don't want him living in their area. he was convicted of sexually assaulting four women and currently in a state hospital. he will be released soon. neighbors are bracing for a fight to prevent him from living in their neighborhood. >> i wouldn't want a rapist here, that dangerous person here. >> if this is our taxpayer dollars going to this, it seems

to me we should have a voice. >> a hearing regarding his placement september 25th in fairfield. the search is on for a man who police say groped several young girls at a uc berkeley swimming pool. police say the man in this photo swam up to the girls thursday night at strawberry canyon pool and grabbed their legs and behind. he then swam away. the victims are between the ages of 9 and 13. campus police are trying to identify the man. they say there are likely victims. parents on high alert on the peninsula as police work to track down a man trying to lure them into the car. the latest incident in palo alto near jordan middle school. a white man in his 30s reportedly pulled up next to two students and tried to get them into his car. last friday someone with that same description approached an 11-year-old girl on lewis road. police got similar report from a

man near paolo verde school. it's been three days since the horrific shooting of the reporter and camera man. the virginia station is doing its best to get back to the business of reporting news. wbbj covered its first live event last night, a high school football game, its first live report since alison parker and ward shot. they stood by as a journalist did a quick report. fans in the stand observed a moment of silence before the games. earlier in the day grief stricken colleagues and friends met with the mayor. he acknowledged the man who gunned down alison and adam obtained his gun legally. the governor says he believes something has to change in american gun laws. >> there are too many guns in america. clearly there are too many guns in the wrong hands. >> the governor is calling for eliminating loopholes in gun

laws. others say verifying should be done on mental health to those who buy guns. authorities reportedly questioning a person of interest in connection with a shooting and killing of sheriff deputy. investigators say last night a man unprovoked ambushed the deputy while he was pumping gas and shot him execution style. the deputy died. the gunman's motive stitt unknown. a death threat has anyone at the prison on alert. an inmate taken to the hospital where he tested positive for legionaire's disease. thirty others showed symptoms. this caused prison to turn off all water to the housing facility forcing 4,000 inmates to skip showers, use port-a-potties and line up to get drinking water. >> the theory is we don't want others at the prison to be impacted health wise by legionaire's disease.

can see, cold front falling apart. we don't have any showers across the bay area but we do have drizzle and mist as that ocean air is really being reinforced. i want to show you what's happening now as we take a peek outside. farther north visibility decreases as showers falling, light sprinkle activity even across golden globes bridge. the ground is wet, folks using windshield wipers. not heavy rain but mist, sprinkle activity. farther south sunshine in the south bay. temperatures are mild, as i mentioned, close to 70 degrees. as that cold front moves through, skies will clear out. temperatures won't be as hot. temperatures back up 10 degrees from yesterday. 85 for south bay, 76 for peninsula, 77 for east bay today. meanwhile tri-valley will see a warm day but definitely not as hot as it was past couple of days. no 90s, back into the mid-80s, 71 san francisco, mid-80s for north bay. happening this weekend, indonesia day festival san francisco from 10:00 to 5:00

first one i want to talk about is hurricane ignacio, hurricane, category one, winds 90 miles per hour. notice the track. it's going to stay at least north of the island chain as it moves through tuesday and wednesday weakening as it makes its way closer. the other thing you want to keep in mind is tracks are always a little bit off. this could be a close call for folks living in hawaii or doing any traveling. the other one, hurricane jimena, strong storms, category four, winds 150 miles an hour, expected to strengthen to category five. that's the strongest you get. look, another beeline towards hawaii. tuesday and wednesday still a category three with winds up to 115, very close to hawaii. new have plans this week and next week in hawaii, make sure you check back with forecast. it always does change with hurricanes. the things that won't change, sunshine each and every day, warm clouds, same for coastline.

rina from santa clara drove 30 hours straight to new orleans. she rescued several people and even brought some of them back to her south bay home. >> her and her children and pets and everything. so we got -- >> firefighter dan coyle was one of many crew members who responded to the disaster. >> plenty of things in a small area. one building or small community, that kind of thing. but to see major city like that annihilated was pretty amazing. >> even 10 years later, new orleans is far from being completely rebuilt. after katrina thousands of students had to find somewhere else to finish their education and rebuild their lives. dozens of them like keona ended up at cal state east bay. she was a junior at university

gang members. >> deputies going around doing welfare check as normal. they noticed a person was not responding to them knocking on the door. they went in and rendered aid. fire and paramedics called. >> sources close to the investigation tell me there are claims the inmate died after being beaten or aggressively restrained by the guards. investigators are not commenting on those accusations. sheriff sergeant james jenson will only say the inmate was declared dead in his cell. the coroner spends the day performing an autopsy and sheriff's office has asked medical examiner not to release any information on the case. >> still an open investigation, we go with the coroner's report, find out what happened, cause of death and motive of death and go from there. >> the dead inmate did not have a cell mate. the it's convoluted three guards are on administrative leave. they have not been legally or administratively charged with anything. damien trujillo, nbc bay area

news. now to a follow-up, police in san francisco have a new weapon to fight the growing problem of heroin overdoses of the drug capable of almost instantaneously reversing an overdose. in mid june mike maloney became first san francisco officer to revive an unconscious man. while he did it he was using a nasal spray that had him back breathing and awake before paramedics arrived. >> we have seen a number of people on the street suffering from an overdose. before we were somewhat powerless to do anything other than get on the radio and request an ambulance and do basic first aid. now when we encounter those incidents, we can actually do something about it. >> police began the pilot program to administer the drug five months ago. it may spread citywide to all officers in two years. the city's public health

cloud cover will clear out. sunshine for tomorrow. we have two hurricanes across the pacific right now. this is ignacio. the other one jimena. we'll talk about ignacio. strong category three right now. expected to make a beeline north of hawaiian island chain as we move toward next couple of days. it's expected to weaken as well, definitely heavy rain and high winds to the island chain over the next couple of days. here is the other thing we're concerned about hurricane jimena, category four, expected to strengthen to category five. wind speeds 150 miles per hour. as it moves to hawaii, expected to strengthen over next 24 hours to category five and eventually weaken back to three. you notice the track takes it very close to hawaii. this upcoming week. by wednesday it will be about 200 miles off the coastline, definitely something to watch. if you're doing any traveling this direction especially by next weekend. at home, temperatures cool off each and every day just a little bit. by tomorrow cooler back in the

santa clara hospital vet building shows a project in almost total disarray, the turner construction company was picked to build it. today top county leaders acknowledge millions of dollars have been wasted and the county is losing at least $100,000 a day in lost revenue. work records we obtained showed the original project contract was about $291 million. turner construction requested an additional $66 million and then another $9 million. the documents also show the county agreed to extend completion deadline by more than a year and agreed to other change orders as well. here is what the project looked like today, two weeks before it's supposed to open. unfinished rooms and no bed. >> i'm disappointed. the progress is not where it should be. this is a patient room, an intensive care unit. as you can see from top to bottom, the room is nowhere near completion. >> in fact, county officials say september 19th opening will be impossible to meet and, in fact,

say it could take two or three years to make up time and solve problems including a rain damaged roof. >> we expect to have a new instead of patched roof. >> how about patches, are they working? >> today i heard they are not. >> many of the things they did were just inexcusable. for example, building an entire floor to specs that were not approved by the state. >> county executive said officials tolerated earlier delays because of turner construction's reputation for completing big projects. in fact, turner was working on levi stadium at the same time. now smith says he believes turner construction became preoccupied with levis at the expense of the hospital project. >> we noticed when levi stadium offered them an incentive bonus to finish quickly that suddenly a lot of our subcontractors left. so they redirected them to the levi stadium. >> but officials say they agreed

to talk to us because the delays prevent valley medical center from deliver much needed services. for example, entire physical rehabilitation unit was supposed to be moved into the new building. instead county says it has had to turn away patients daily because of the current facilitied limited capacity. new building was supposed to house an expansion of the burn unit and maternity department. today a spokesman for turner construction told me it was wrong to blame the construction company for all the delays and says it's not supported by the facts. he said the county actually accepted responsibility for many of the problems. but county executive jeffrey smith is not swayed and said the county has already put turner construction on notice. come up with a better explanation in seven days or lose the project. >> we can't afford to waste taxpayers' dollars. we can't afford to have a company who is playing gamesen charge of the schedule. >> so the county could fire

turner within a week. >> right. >> things may not remain up in the air for very long. the future of turner construction's role as well as the future of the overall project could be decided at a meeting between the two sides early neck week. in san jose, nbc bay area news. an ambitious new project could bring thousands of jobs to the bay area. not just high-tech or high-end, a lot of new entry level and manufacturing jobs could be on the way as well. the department of defense, as well as local businesses like this one in san jose have pledged $250 million towards what's called flex tech alliance. it involves everything from chips that can be printed like paper to tiny robots. people are needed to support the technology and that could be a great thing for the bay area. >> the great thing about manufacturing is it offers a range of jobs. it's just not for phds and engineers but great technician and production jobs that pay
