angel to burlingame. a contractor crashed into a transmission tower friday night. the tower toppled over, forcing officers to shut the freeway as they tried to safely clear traffic. 101 reopened yesterday about 5:00 p.m. pg&e crews are working on a temporary repair. you may want to steer clear of 101. it will be closed from 10:00 p.m. tonight to 4:00 a.m. tomorrow. dozens of people forced out of homes in the east bay after officers arrest a man for trying to make a flash bomb in his home. this happened on robin lane near monument boulevard and 680. police say the man's wife called at 6:00 p.m. to report her husband was drunk and mixing chemicals. contra costa hazmat and walnut creek bomb squad were called. when they arrived, there was a heavy chemical smell in the air. 60 people left homes, including his wife and two children. police say the man complied with orders to come out of the house.

reconnect with something that has come to mean a great deal to us. it wasn't a hurricane but a state of mind. if you were in the storm zone, it was the only thing you thought of for months and years. the storm didn't come and didn't go. it stayed and in many ways, it's still here. ♪ the gulf of mexico roared up out of there. storm surge almost 30 feet. nobody has ever heard of a 30-foot storm surge. and wiped out just house after house after house, and as you can see, it's not exactly like there's a re rush to rebuild here, either. >> when people think of the hurricane they think of new orleans. but mississippi got hammered, too. days after the storm earnest got his restaurant open again. his gum bbo is second to none. >> it was worth it.

we got to cooking. >> that to me says a lot about us right here, you know. that's what we did. this is the big bridge between the two it was destroyed in katrina as were hundreds of houses and businesses around here. wednesday night early thursday morning you sleep in your car because there was no place to stay. there was independent folk around here. we don't count on the government for much but where is the cavalry? nowhere was the cavalry needed more than in new orleans when the levees failed the city became a cruel example offing .

nearly every home was flooded. that wasn't the worst of it. >> when the flood from katrina got here to saint bernard parish, look at the tanks here ruptured sending 25,000 barrels into the surrounding community. 25,000 barrels. a year later we stood in a woman's home. she couldn't stop crying because she felt like while her house was inhabitable she was suffocating. >> we saw acts of kindness. remember the trailers that leaked toxic fumes? have mercy. the poor were hit the hardest. new orleans lower ninth ward exemplified that. for years it felt like a neighborhood that was left to die. no more. ♪ tonya harris lives here. a friend told her she can see
