republicans seeking the 2016 presidential nomination. which claims are true, which are false and what's the potential impact on the election. >> the term anchor baby is something that frazzles people. seems to apply to people that fled in the '70s and '80s and came from laos and cambodia as well, mostly south vietnam. some accuse them of coming here to assure permanent residence from parents. >> as a boat person myself, i never heard that term associated with thousands that fled vietnam and southeast asia at that time.
7:47 am
>> it is amazing. now you get to a point, what comes now. fast forward 30 years. >> a flashpoint when it comes to immigration. >> it is about the immigration debate. today's debate which makes it fascinating, particularly with respect to the 11 million undocumented residents who are here now. in recent years, the term anchor baby was applied to children of any undocumented residents who may have been born here. now it includes of course others, not just boat people. donald trump brought up the term recently with respect to mexicans. jeb bush has applied it to asians. they're in full fledge, with the boat people, same idea. the idea is they come here illegally to have their babies, providing safe haven for parents who have the babies. democrats are saying whoe, what's going on, this is
7:48 am
divisive, pits whites against nonwhites, same old story as far as republicans go from the past. >> how many babies are born to undocumented residents and what about the claim that people are coming here and using babies as a path to citizenship. >> look, approximately 340,000 babies are born each year to undocumented residents. that's about 8% of all babies born in the united states, but there's no statistic showing undocumented with the intent of having babies here. in fact, research shows that undocumented residents have babies as part of relationships pretty much like everybody else, other people as well. as for the claim that this is a path to citizenship, follow the logic a second. that claim doesn't hold. here's why. the child of the undocumented parents is born here, fine. automatic u.s. citizen, and by
7:49 am
the way, also the case in 33 other countries as well, but the child cannot petition for his parents to get citizenship until he or she reaches the age of 21. it is unlikely they'll plan to deliver a baby with the hope of waiting 21 years for possibility of citizenship. that's a far cry. >> squeeze in a quick question from a viewer in jersey asking does this term apply in other countries, if americans go to another country to have a baby, that baby gets citizenship there, is this an american term or has it been used against americans? >> i don't know that. we do know this. we have immigration issues all over. europe is under the gun. see people from syria, iraq, other parts, north africa, they're fleeing and there are hundreds of thousands of them coming in, more than ever
7:50 am
before, with the idea of setting up shop there, just like people accuse people of setting up shop here. this idea of waiting 21 years for the parents to get citizenship. >> far fetched. let's talk about the conversation continuing in the next year. do you see it being an issue for the presidential election and what kind of impact will the debate and argument have in 2016? >> we are 14 months away. seems like a long time, it is not such a long time. believe you me. 14 months away from the next presidential election. a number of issues can come and go between now and then. we do know that in 2012 more than 70% of latinos and more than 70% of asian americans voted for democratic candidate barack obama who ran on a platform of immigration reform, including a path to citizenship for undocumented. republican leaders promised after that defeat to be more inclusive in 2016, particularly
7:51 am
with minorities, because of their one side votes in 2012. to the extent that the issue is perceived as anti-immigrant, that may help republicans with the base, absolutely will help with the base, but that base has to be larger than it was in 2012 for the republicans to succeed, otherwise this may hit them right in the face as it has in the past. >> as always, larry, thank you for your time and insight. stay with us. we will be back after this break.
