"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm melissa rehberger. tropical storm erika may be gone but areas of florida are bracing

for heavy rain. flood watches and warnings in effect for much of the tampa bay area which has already seen a very wet summer. this as haiti is recovering as erika brought heavy rains to that area. some residents could be seen trying to save possessions from flooded homes. in the meantime, it looks like hawaii dodged a bullet as a hurricane was moving away from a direct hit. the once category four storm is weakening and forecasters say it could be a tropical storm by tuesday. three category four hurricanes in the pacific ocean with ignacio in the middle there. a final 2016 match up jeb bush and hillary clinton seemed inevitable but this weekend both could be in serious trouble. this morning three fund-raisers walked out the door and they were let go because they were no longer needed said the campaign

but they said it was overall internal personalities. his dad former george h.w. bush saying he needs your help now. a new poll to hillary clinton. all this lends to the summer surprise success of nontraditional candidates. nbc's kristen welker reports. >> reporter: two front runners, two very different fortunes in the new polls while donald trump surges. >> our country is in big trouble. >> reporter: hillary clinton is struggling. secretary clinton is out raising money as a new iowa poll mounts bernie sanders seven points behind clinton and her support plummeting 20 points since the last poll was conducted. sanders, who is also catching up to clinton in new hampshire, weighed in. >> this is not about hillary clinton.

this is pro-bernie sanders and pro a message that says enough is enough. this country and our government belong to all of us, not just a handful of very wealthy people. >> reporter: while the poll is showing 61% of iowa democrats say the e-mail issue is not important, republicans are latching on to the controversy. >> with hillary clinton, it just seems to be one scandal after another. >> reporter: the wildcard for democrats? vice president joe biden who made a surprise appearance at a democratic party event in delaware saturday. he hasn't even announced but comes in third place with 14% supported in iowa. >> this is a movement. >> reporter: meanwhile, donald trump's lead spiked to 23% support in iowa. this weekend trump courting voters in nashville. >> i don't want it to be about me. this is about common sense. it's about doing the right

thing. >> reporter: another gop surprise? neurosurgeon ben carson is close at trump at 18% and ahead of ted cruz and scott walker and jeb bush. carson has been much less visible on the stump and on the tv circuit than donald trump, but like trump, he is also seen as nontraditional and a washington outsider. >> i will never go and lick the boots of rich people and the special interest groups. >> reporter: the analysts say voters want a nonestablishment candidates. >> they are tired of politicians and distrust politicians and want somebody authentic and genuine and tell you the truth when they don't like it. mornings it is official. the tallest mountain in north america has a new name. tracie potts is live in washington. no more montana mckinley. what is the new name? >> it's deal nali. it's a sacred name to alaska begans and that's what they called it when an explorer heard

that the mckinley had been nominated and they changed it. for 40 years alaskans have been calling it that. now the obama administration agreed to change the name. not everyone is happy with it. in ohio, which is president mckinley's home state, senator rob portman said he hopes they can find some other way to honor the 25th president in that national park for the mountain for many of us, for many people in their lifetime has bourn his name. he said this is an example of president obama going around congress typically congress will approve something like this in this case they did not. >> tracie potts, thank you. the man accused of fatally shooting a sheriff deputy in texas is expected to appear in court later this morning. shannon miles has been charged with the murder. goforth was killed friday night while filling up his cruiser.

the shooting has been described as an unprovoked execution style killing. hundred of people gathered to honor the slain deputy. crowds gathered outside of a local church and then marched mile and a half to the gas station where goforth was killed. he was a 10-year veteran of the harris county sheriff's office. family, friends, and crowds gathered to remember two news reporters gunned down on live television last week. 24-year-old reporter alison parker and cameraman adam ward were killed. >> i want to play softball with adam again and i want to see alison dance. and i will in the wonderful memories they gave me, they gave us. adam ward's funeral will take place on tuesday.

>> alison parker's obituary says a celebration of her life will be at a later day. wes craven has died and he was best known for creating the character freddie krueger who haunted people's dreams on "the nightmare on elm street." he was today, the world lost a great man. my friend and mentor wes craven, my heart goes out to his family. craven died sunday of brain cancer at his l.a. home. he was 76. the 2015 vma's on mtv were quite a spectacle. plenty of unexpected moments. taylor swift and nicki minaj put their differences between them as they performed in the opening act. a new feud may be brewing between minaj and miley cyrus. minaj won best hip-hop video and went a bit off script.
