"today in the bay" starts now. good morning. let's get straight to breaking news this this morning. headache on highway 101 finally one of the busiest freeways in the bay area back open. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. some welcomed news here, the reopening coming after days of

delays and on again, off again closures, we're monitoring how this is impacting your morning commute before you head out the door this had morning, but first let's go to dr live in had burlingame. how is it looking? >> reporter: both directions northbound and southbound highway 101 reopened by the chp. the only closure is the off ramp to the broadway avenue overpass this in burlingame where you can see was the site of this this initial accident that sent those transmission power lines over the highway. highway 101 was shut down on and off over the weekend after a construction crew working on broadway friday night accidentally knocked down one of the transmission towers sending high voltage lines on to the freeway. no one was hurt. but the highway was shut down. had head to shut down highway

101 in both directions while pg&e respanned 1,500 feet of high voltage power line over the freeway. we just spoke with a pg&e spokesperson who said they finished at 3:59 this morning, that was again the idea to get this open for the morning commute which they have done, and you will see the construction going on behind me, that big crane is with a they used to put in a temporary transmission power until they can get those lines back up and re-energized. eventually they will have to put in a permanent tower, pg&e wasn't sure if when they put in that permanent tower if that will require them to shut down 101 again. that is nothing you need to be concerned abouter for your morning commute because all lines reopened again. for more on your morning commute i will send it over to mike inouye. thank you for clarifying that for folks once again as bob is saying all lanes of 101 are open through the area. burlingame, millbrae had closures overnight and over the

weekend, but right now 101 is open for business in all lanes. 280 is a great alternate if you want to completely avoid any of the news coverage this morning. that will keep you clear. the rest of the peninsula accident free, the south bay as well. over near the coliseum an earlier crash. we to have more breaking news this morning. an overnight fire ripped through a south bay elementary school just as the new school year gets underway. firefighters are at loma preet at that school right now mopping up what is left of the fire. >> "today in the bay" damian trujillo live there right now. damian, school is going to be canceled for the day here. >> reporter: yeah, classes canceled today. we are near the summit of the santa cruz mountains. firefighters will spend the rest of the morning mopping up. according to the superintendent,

cory kid well, the community center is the one that received the most if not all of the damage. the building separates lom lome preda elementary and the district doesn't want the children to be around all the heavy equipment that will remain here for several hours. there is also a santa cruz county sheriffs substation here that was destroyed. investigators are still looking for the cause of this fire. it did require a massive response from local and surrounding agencies. >> we utilized mutual aid with santa clara county fire department, central santa cruz fire protection district, scotts valley and felton fire production districts. >> reporter: firefighters here say the main goal was to save the gymnasium. it appears they were success tfl in reaching that goal. the sheriff's office also says that they will be assisting in this investigation.

what they call a suspicious fire. that's according the to the santa cruz county sheriff's office. we're live in the santa cruz mountains, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." we will see what else we find out this morning. mean ooim, new tails on an outbreak at the san quentin prison. we're learning a total of six inmates now have legionnaires' disease. the outbreak was discovered last week after an inmate was are rushed to the hospital. legionnaires' is a type of pneumonia and spread by mist from water containing that bacteria. the diagnosis forced the prison to turn off its water supply. faucets and showers have to stay dry until they figure out the source of the outbreak. inmates are using portable showers and getting water shipped in from the inside. another 51 inmates have been monitored for tomorrow's. the recent deadly shooting on san francisco's pier 14 has many bay area communities rethinking their relations with medical immigration agents, that includes santa clara county. county leaders today will hold a special meeting with community groups and corrections leaders.

it will cover improving communications with ice, especially when it comes to undocumented inmates who commit serious crimes. most bay area counties have had limited cooperation with ice, much like san francisco. that is until last month when an undocumented immigrant shot and killed kate steinle along the embarcadero. 4:36. let's get your workweek started off the right way with some cool temperatures. kari hall, good morning. >> good morning. beautiful weather expected this week and it's not too bad as you head out this had morning. it's 64 degrees in the east bay, is san francisco 60 degrees and cool in the north bay, now at 56 degrees, lower 60s in the south bay and peninsula, expect highs if the lower 80s today. some of us will be right at about average for this time of year. san francisco up to 72 degrees, east bay 80 and the tri-valley topping out at 87 degrees. not a bad way to start the week. gets even cooler from here. i will show you those numbers coming up. let's get a look at the morning

commute. i have turned our oakland camera to the south, southbound away from 98 and the coliseum heading down in toward hayward. no slowing shows up. on the map we did have an incident just south of our camera, i don't see any slowing, chp looks like they're clearing everything out of the roadway. this was there was an incident reported fender-bender across that bay bridge span. trying to get more inn fees because no lanes are blocked and no slowing. over night the peninsula that lane closure has reopened. all lanes are clear through burlingame. coming up. the sorrow continues as the closure continues as a photographer killed live on it television last week in pem liesed. and a sacramento hero is celebrated after paving countless lives on board a paris bound train.

at 4:40, the remembrance continues. the young cameraman killed in last week's deadly shooting on live television will be remembered later today at the virginia high school that he once attended. adam ward's family is going to be at salem high school where they're asking people to wear the school colors as a tribute. hundreds gathered for a memorial service yesterday in roanoke to onner both journalists killed by their former colleague. wdbj general manager jeff marks remembered alison parker and adam ward for the joy they provided as much as their hard work and dedication to their jobs into i want to play

softball with adam again and i want to see alison dance and i will in the wonderful memories they gave she, they gave us. >> that auditorium no doubt filled to capacity. marks said that he hopes people can turn anger about what happened into positive action. he has also called for greater awareness of getting help for those who need mental health care. hero's homecoming, anthony sadler one of three friends who stopped a european terror attack is getting a warm welcome home in sacramento. you may remember sadler was one of the men who took down a gunman armed with several guns on board a paris bound train. sadler got a standing ovation from his church congregation yesterday. the 23-year-old's father is a pastor at shiloh baptist church and sadler grew up sitting in if those pews.

72 degrees before it comes back down. in san jose today 82 degrees, 81 in palo alto, the marina will be at 68 degrees and petaluma 83, concord 86 degrees and livermore 87. so warming up inland and then the coastal areas will be in the 60s. so feeling like fall outside and even cooler than average over the next few days. we will get some more of the clouds during the morning, some drizzle possible and that will keep our temperatures down as we go through the week. looking at that three-day forecast in the south bay, we go from 82 today to 78 degrees for the high on wednesday. we will see more of those 70s across the bay area. even some upper 60s in san francisco, 85 degrees today in the north bay, 77 on wednesday and the east shore will also see those temperatures coming down a few more degrees over the next couple of days. let's get a look at that morning commute with mike. good morning. i told you the crash 880 the at hag berger looked like it was

past there. as you approach hegenberger, two lanes blocked, two lanes open. they don't know when they are going to be able to clear it. two rescue teams from the bay area back home this morning after rescuing a woman lost in the sierra for nine days. teams from marin and san mateo counties were among those sent to behind hiyuki harwood. mine says later she was found injured but alive. here is a look at the team from marin county. members returned safely yesterday from the sierra. their return was delayed by smoke from a fire burning near that rescue area. skies cleared enough yesterday for helicopters to fly them out of there. >> after a while you start giving up hope there. president obama heading to squa today for a push for sweeping action on climate change. some of alaska's most awe inspiring sites are

forecast. it was a gorgeous weekend. in store for a nice week, kari? is it. >> it will be a great week. in fact, getting even cooler over the next few days. today not so bad. 60 degrees now in san francisco, in the north bay at 53 degrees. today's highs will be up to the 70s and 80s across most of the bay and the north bay up to 85, the south bay 82 degrees. we will take a look at all of the microclimates and what to expect over the next few days coming up. let's see how the roads are flowing with mike. overall great, but we have two big slow downs. one in the south bay, not here, this is 101 at 680, but just a little farther north, northbound 101 around old bay shore. you see the speed sensors jamming up around 880. traffic break because of a crash and a couple vehicles have to be moved to the shoulder. this is backing things up at the 101/880 interchange. meanwhile, the rest of your way is moving slowly, including the bay bridge toll plaza but
