i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's get a check of that forecast. it was a gorgeous weekend. in store for a nice week, kari? is it. >> it will be a great week. in fact, getting even cooler over the next few days. today not so bad. 60 degrees now in san francisco, in the north bay at 53 degrees. today's highs will be up to the 70s and 80s across most of the bay and the north bay up to 85, the south bay 82 degrees. we will take a look at all of the microclimates and what to expect over the next few days coming up. let's see how the roads are flowing with mike. overall great, but we have two big slow downs. one in the south bay, not here, this is 101 at 680, but just a little farther north, northbound 101 around old bay shore. you see the speed sensors jamming up around 880. traffic break because of a crash and a couple vehicles have to be moved to the shoulder. this is backing things up at the 101/880 interchange. meanwhile, the rest of your way is moving slowly, including the bay bridge toll plaza but the big concern for the morning

is southbound 880, jackknifed rig over near hegenberger. we see slowing kout of the coliseum. we begin with breaking news. classes canceled after a destructive overnight fire in the south bay. this is happening just as the new school year is getting underway. it firefighters right now at loma prieta school are mopping up what's left of that fire. >> "today in the bay" damian trujillo is there live now. damian, investigators are looking into the cause of this fire. >> reporter: yeah, the sheriff's office is calling it suspicious at this point. right now firefighters are still dousing the hot spots here. this is the community center portion of the school here. so none of the classrooms were affected from what we understand. firefighters will be here for much of the day. now, according to the superintendent the community center, again, is is the one that received most of the damage. the main focus for firefighters was to save the gymnasium next

to the community center. the buildings are in between loma prieta elementary and ct english middle school. those schools seem undamaged at this point but the district doesn't want the children to be around all the heavy equipment that will remain here for several hours. there is also santa cruz county sheriff's substation that was destroyed in this fire. investigators are looking for the official cause of this, a fire that the sheriff's office is calling, again, sus is spishs. >> we were lucky that one of our local battalion chiefs was the initial attack incident commander and he is actually till here at scene and he is doing the investigation. >> reporter: the call came in just before midnight. so far investigators haven't ruled out anything as the potential cause, but again, sheriff's sergeant shear of the santa cruz county sheriff's office says this fire does appear to be suspicious. we're live in the santa cruz mountains, i'm damian trujillo,

"today in the bay." thank you, damian. well, police in palo alto have a second indecent exposure to investigate. the latest happened friday in the downtown area. police say a woman was walking o on university avenue when she noticed a man following her. she got into her car and drove off, but when she stopped blocks away the man appeared, knocked on her passenger window and then exposed himself. >> it does concern me because in this area there's a lot of traffic and a lot of families come down here so i wouldn't want anyone to, you know, have a bad experience with that. >> police are also looking for another hand who exposed himself to a woman walking a dog at monroe park on miller avenue tuesday night. police have a sketch of that suspect. while both men are believed to be about the same age, police are not saying if the two incidents are related joot the sanctuary city debate ramping up again in the south bay. santa clara county leaders are going to talk about whether to

give ice a 48-hour heads up about the release of serious or violent inmates. "today in the bay" kris sanchez joining us now. this debate fueled by the killing of kate steinle on san francisco's pier 14. >> reporter: definitely a ripple effect. the last time they talked about the county's sanctuariel policy stemming from the case of juan francisco lopez-sanchez in san francisco there was passion fat protests from community members. about 80 people interrupted the santa clara county supervisor's heating for about 15 minutes before they were ushered out holding signs against ice a, the immigration customs enforcement agency, when community activist says ice breaks up families and leaves undocumented immigrants vulnerable to crime because they don't want to report it. sheriff laurie smith has said serious and violent offenders should not be protected from deportation. here are those comments from last week. >> we fear that the community who already may have distrust of calling police had in cases of crime will not be calling people

in domestic violence situations, will not be calling authorities for fear of deportation. >> i to honestly believe the people who are serious and violent felonies that have been convicted, we should at least notify ice if they are in this country illegally. >> santa clara county and many other sanctuary cities are reexamining their sanctuary policies after the death of kate steinle on pier 14 in july. her accused killer is an undocumented immigrant with a long list of convictions and deportations. today's meeting is at 10:30 this morning. it's the bail and release work group, this they make the recommendations regarding release to the full supervisory board. now, the group debating the sanctuary issue is going to recommend the policy for is that full board, but once again, santa clara county is one of the first sanctuary communities in the nation, laura. >> one to continue to watch. it is 5:05. scary moments for passengers on board two southwest airlines planes at oakland international

airport. this is what passengers saw on board. the very tip of the plane's wing broken off. airport officials tell us a plane headed to orange county was backing away from the gate last night when it clipped the other plane. both are now out of service undergoing maintenance checks. luckily no one was hurt. overnight southwest released a statement saying safety is its number one focus and the airline is now doing an internal review to figure out what went wrong. okay. let's different form of transportation now. watch out if you are heading over the san mateo bridge this had this morning. the chp is warning that high winds right now are hitting that bridge. the chp says that means you should slow down and make sure to leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you. let's check in with kari. is it a windy start to our day? >> i ail bit of a light breeze out there, but not a lot of wind until later on this afternoon. as we get a live look at san francisco mostly clear skies, we will start to see a few clouds moving in, but a bright and

sunny day, a high of 72 degrees on the embarcadero, palo alto 81 degrees, 84 degrees in los gatos, 83 petaluma. 86 danville expect a life 85 degrees, overall a very nice day, temperatures about average for the end of august. into the next few days it gets even a few degrees cooler. let's see how the commute is moving with mike. the big deal is that we're not really moving very well over here by the oakland coliseum. you see these flares moving you over. what's in the darkness are a couple of trucks. there was a jack miefd big rig and a little bit of a fuel spill and we have you down to two lanes south by right by the coliseum. as you are south of 66 that's what's going on here. the only slow down. san leandro street behind the coliseum is a good alternate. if you jump on anywhere south of 98th you're doing fine. the rest of your bay moves smoothly.

toward the bay bridgenw9ñ= problems but there is a traffic break clearing from the south bay northbound 101. the peninsula at 101 is looking better. bob, you're there to tell you what happened over the weekend. >> reporter: both directions of 101 southbound and northbound in millbrae and burlingame did reopen at 4:00 it this this morning as pg&e was hoping to have happen and what the workers with pg&e were to go over the weekend was reinstalling this. you are looking at a one inch aluminum and steel transmission line, high power transmission line that fell on the freeway as a result of an accident friday night. you might recall that highway 101 was shut down on and off throughout the weekend after construction workers doing work here on the broadway avenue overpass accidentally knocked down one of those transmission towers. that was around 9:30 last night. the road was shut down in both directions from 9:30 until 4:30 saturday afternoon and then again yesterday while pg&e

installed a temporary transmission tower and had to respan 1,500 feet of high voltage power line over the freeway. >> is it possible the highway would have to be shut down again when the permanent tower is put back in? >> until that work is engineered and we have a better idea of what the permanent solution is it would be premature to speculate at this point. >> reporter: so, again, both directions of highway 101 reopened here in millbrae and burlingame, the only closure still the off ramp to the broadway avenue passover, flyover that we are standing at here right now. you will notice there is still a lot of work going on behind me right now, but nothing that requires the freeway being shut down. reporting live here in burlingame, bob redell, "today in the bay." get drivers moving. coming up, new poll numbers spell trouble for both parties' front runners, with a these numbers are saying about the mood of early state voters.

to deal with, either. >> it is a monday morning, we're easing into it. the good thing is the weather is nice, right, sam? >> let me tell you what this is going to look like, we will see a continuation from this weekend. >> yeah, this this weekend was gorgeous out there. we had comfortable weather, nice little wind picking up during the afternoon, expect more of the same today. let's get a look at what a you are seeing right now, looking at the bay bridge, we see the lights going across the bridge, everyone getting the monday started and it is cool with mostly clear skies. those temperatures out will in the 60s right now, it's 60 degrees in san francisco, today's high will be 72 degrees there, east bay you can see that problem there on the camera there that mike will be talking about in a bit, but it will be 80 degrees today and 82 degrees in the south bay, the tri-valley up to 87 degrees. not too bad, though, for the end of august. let me take you hour by hour in livermore. we start out in the low 60s and jumping up into the 80s.

by lunchtime it's 81 degrees. 86 degrees at 2:00. and then it will be a nice evening once that breeze kicks in, our temperatures will be dropping quickly. take a look at what's happening out there in the pa a civic. for the first time in recorded history we have three major hurricanes moving through the pacific ocean and they are all at least a category 3 or greater. we have jimena and also ignacio as well as kilo. these will continue to move away from hawaii, no expected land falls, which is great news, especially with those hurricanes being that strong. for us we have nice quiet weather, our cooler than average temperatures continue and especially once we get a deeper marine layer we will have the morning clouds and fog and drizzle likely as we'd into the middle of the week and temperaturewise it is going to be so mice, highs in the 80s for most of us today and then we will see is some 70s all across

the bay by the middle of the workweek. let's get an update on that problem in oakland with mike. apologies, kari, for taking your shot and putting that big ugly rig in front of it. they did make good progress while you had it on camera. that tow truck got on scene, they were able to hook up that rig which had a trailer behind it. that trailer is not seen in had this shot. they pulled it over out of your slow lane. we've seen folks with flashlights going around this dirt area because there has been a fuel leak as well. if it's gotten into the soil it will be a hazmat swaying. meanwhile, we to have traffic slowing. slow south high street agenda past the coliseum. san leandro street or eastbound 580 as your alternates. you can still take 880 and plan for a slower drive agenda south past the coliseum. if it progresses for more than a half hour it's going to be pretty bad. you might just want to stay over

they're trying to check whether or not that went into a storm drain. that o could be an extended period of closure. as we look at the jam the map 880 is jammed, eastbound 580 is a great alternate. a smooth drive on the approach, there is a stall on the bay bridge now. back to you. we begin with breaking news. classes canceled at two schools after a destructive overnight fire had in the south bay. this is happening just as the new school year is getting underway. firefighters at loma prieta school mopping up what's left of that fire off of summit road in los gatos. "today in the bay" damian trujillo is live there now. damian, investigators looking into the cause of this fire. >> reporter: yeah, that's while the firefighters here are still dousing o some of the hot spots here in the community center of loma prieta elementary. they are trying to assess the situation, trying to find out if they can find the cause of this fire. the fire crews will be here for quite some time this morning on

school grounds. according to superintendent cory kidwell the community center between two schools is the one that went up in flames. inside that community center was also a sheriff's substation, an office where deputies can go in to write reports or handle other law enforcement matters without having to go all the way into the town of santa cruz. sergeant shear with the sheriff's office is calling this fire suspicious. the community center separates loma prieta elementary and ct middle school. those schools are not damaged. investigators are still looking for the official cause of this fire. >> the initial engines had a got at scene, when they first got here at the actually struck a second alarm just based on the building and the size and the fire intensity. it was pretty much fully involved by the time they got here. >> reporter: the fire did require a massive response from

local and surrounding agencies. firefighters here say the main goal was to save the gymnasium on the school grounds and it appears they were successful in doing that. the gym does appear to be intact even though it is adjacent to the community center. they're still trying to find the official cause. we're live in the santa cruz mountains, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." hugh very much, daniel man. it is 5:32. new details on an outbreak at san quentin prison. we are learning a total of six inmates now have legionnaires' disease. the outbreak was discovered after an inmate was rushed to the hospital. legionnaires' is a type of pneumonia and its spread by mist from water containing the bacteria. the diagnosis forced the prison to turn off its water friday. faucets is and showers have to stay dry until they figure out the source of the outbreak. inmates are using portable showers and getting water shipped from outside. another 51 inmates are being monitored for symptoms. filling out death row e but

failing to carry out executions. the argument over preserving the death penalty in california or abolishing it will take center stage later today. the attorney general is appealing a federal court ruling last year that have struck down executions. the judge said the unpredictable delay in carrying out executions is both arbitrary and unfair. that ruling has been put on hold while the court of appeals weighs piz harris' appeal. in the last 35 years nearly 1,000 criminals have been sent to death row in the state, only 13 have been executed. the sanctuary city debate ramps up today not south bay. santa clara county leaders will talk about whether to give immigration and customs enforcement a 48-hour heads up about the release of serious or violent inmates. from a falling red wood tree in sonoma. you saw it there. the tree fell about noon taking down two power lines on greentree way. initially month to 4,000 customers lost power. crews expect to have it all back online before sunrise. an explosion and fire set off by an aerosol can had police and firefighters rushing into action in san jose. officers happened to be nearby and they actually heard the bang and saw the flames that were shooting out of the creek bed. this was before noon yesterday near coyote creek and tully road. it ended up burning less hand an acre of land and was under control within an hour. fire investigators say a homeless encampment is here by. two rescuers are back after rescuing a woman in the sierra after nine days. they were sent to behind hiyuki harwood. she ended up separated from the

group. nine days later she was found, injured but alive. this is a team coming back from marin county, they returned safely yesterday from the sear rachlt their return was delayed by smoke were a fire burning near that rescue area. a hike in big sir did turn tragic for a woman from the east bay who slipped, fell and drowned on friday. search and rescue crews recovered the woman's body in the ocean near mcway falls near the julia fire burns state back. it's believed that she was climbing down a cliff without proper equipment when she fell. 20-year-old med na faraz from union city. a warning for people headed to beaches in the san francisco and monterey bay areas. watch out for strong rip currents and large breakers. the high surf advisory expires tonight. a calm start to start out your workweek. let's get a check of your weather with meteorologist kari hall. >> good morning. the winds will be picking up

today. we will see that, especially along the coast as we start out in the low 60s now, here is where we're head had had this afternoon, 82 degrees in san jose is, 81 palo alto, the anything district will be at 71 degrees, 83 degrees in petaluma and oakland 76 degrees. livermore topping out at 87 degrees. nice comfortable weather, about it typical for the end of august and it gets even cooler as we head into september. so i will show you those temperatures coming up. let's see how the roads are moving now with mike. getting stopped up in a couple of spots for east bay drivers. the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights were turned on about 5:27 this morning indicating the volume of traffic expected from oakland in towards san francisco. we will look at oakland as well, a jam heading south past the coliseum for the 880 drive because of all these flashing lights, an earlier jackknifed rig. more activity. we had one lane blocked, maybe we have two lanes once again as you are approaching that hegenberger off ramp, a fuel

spill seems to be the biggest issue as it may have leaked into the soil. no estimate for when they are going to open that. you're jammed southbound 880 high street past the coliseum. eastbound 580 is a great alternate. if you typically cross over the bay bridge you might want to take 92 over there. the good news at least 101 through san bruno and millbrae is open for business. bob, we had a lot of activity over the weekend closing that freeway. what's going on right now this morning for 101 and pg&e and all the activity over there? >> reporter: mike, fortunately the road was reopened at 4:00 this morning as was initially promised, well before the morning commute. so you've got both northbound and southbound highway 101 going through burlingame, millbrae reopened after pg&e was able to restring that high powered transmission line that came down yz weekend. the only closure is the off ramp to the broadway avenue overpass here in burlingame. highway 101 was shut down on and off for most of the weekend,

southbound at millbrae, northbound at anza after a construction crew friday night accidentally mocked one of the transmission towers down sending high voltage power lines on to the freeway, remarkably no one was hurt but the road was shut down from aroundis 9:30 friday night until 4:30 saturday afternoon and then again yesterday. you are looking at the one inch aluminum and steel power transmission line that they had to respan over the pre way. 1,500 feet of this. that's why it took quite a time. it's an undertaking for pg&e, something they know how to do, but of course this being an emergency situation they had to work pretty fast to get that road reopened in i am for the commute which they succeeded in at 4:00 this morning. so if you do have to commute up and down the peninsula, you don't have to worry about 101 being shut down again like it was this weekend. reporting live in burlingame, bob redell, "today in the bay."

happening today, the man accused in an execution style shooting of a texas sheriff he's deputy heads to court. deputies say shannon miles shot and killed deputy darren goforth friday just after the deputy finished pilling up at a gas station. investigators call the attack of the ten year veteran unprovoked. the 47-year-old deputy leaves behind a wife and two children ages 12 and we don't know the age of the other child. they now -- miles is now being charged with goforth's murder. two armed robbers on the loose this morning, this they targeted an east bay convenience store and pistol which happened the clerk in the face. this happened at a pleasant hill gas station on monday umt boulevard around 5:00 last night. police say a man with a gun tee panned am money from the clerk. despite getting the money officers say the man still hit

the clerk in the face. they say a shot went on and pierced a nearby video. they went into a getaway car. the clerk is recovering at the hospital. officers i fired on a man with a rifle in south service. the man recovering in the hospital. started yesterday morning when officers arrived at del monte and romney avenues near san francisco's bart station. they received calls of a middle-aged man in the street with a rifle. officers ordered the with us spect to drop his weapon that's when police say the suspect kept coming at them. the officers shot the man. police have not said how many times. the identities of the officer and suspect have not been released. it it was a special tribute at the sonoma raceway for an indy car driver killed last sunday. fans and fellow drivers paid tribute to justin wilson yesterday at the gopro grand prix of sonoma. part of that tribute included a personally designed logo that drivers wore on their helmets, also had it on hair cars.
