a good monday morning thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we're tracking the weather and roads of course. mike inouye keeping an eye on that morning drive, including a trouble spot we've seen this morning on 880. let's start with meteorologist kari hall had she's got a look at our microclimate forecast. >> good monday morning. mostly clear sky if you love today's weather yesterday's weather today will be more of the same as we take a look at some of those temperatures now, it is mostly clear in the north bay, 52 degrees in the east bay, 63 degrees. highs will be in the 70s and 80s all across the bay area. along the coast you've got low 70s, in the tri-valley up to the upper 80s. not a bad way to start out the week and it gets even better. i will show you that forecast coming up. let's see -- learn more about those problems on 880. this is a bad way to start the week for 880 southbound, but getting better i think as the minutes go. these barrels, when one left

they have to open, the kitty litter type stuff, there was a fuel leak after the jack knifed wig rig. southbound 880 just past 66. as we look at the traffic flow, i'm sorry, there is no -- the map shows a slow down, i will show that to you this in a second. this jam will clear pretty soon. it's slow over past the map on the coliseum area, you are going to use 580 eastbound as your alternate. this should start to clear. back to san jose, the live look shows you san jose northbound is jammed up were 680 up to the crash at mckee. this is a big jam for the south bay, guys. those are the two biggest incidents. i will hand it back to you for breaking news. an update for you, an overnight fire means no class today for about 500 students at both loma prieta elementary school and ct english middle school. this is what the community center looks like there this morning. it connects both campuses. >> that's where the fire was wedged in between those two

different schools which are located off of summit road along highway 17 in los gatos. "today in the bay" damian trujillo has been there all morning long. damian, crews need today to clean up. we still saw some smoldering hot spots behind you within the last hour. >> reporter: yeah, and now that they are getting more sunlight you can see the roof is gone in the community center behind me, the big building is the gymnasium that does have some damage but they were able to save that jim nays sum here in the santa cruz mountains. crews are still dousing -- or were to using a little while ago some of the hot spots inside the community center, i don't see any fire hoses anymore here, looks like they are mopping up at this point. the community center is in between the two schools, low ma preet at that he will emory and ct english middle school. those schools were not damaged. but inside that community center was also a sheriff's substation, an office where deputies could go in to write reports or handle

other law enforcement matters without having to go all the way into the town of santa cruz. sergeant shearer with the sheriff's office is calling this fire suspicious. this morning the district decided to capsel classes and investigators are still looking for the official cause of the fire. >> we were lucky that one of our local battalion chiefs was the initial attack incident commander and he is actually still here at scene and he's doing the investigation. >> reporter: fire crews did not want to comment on the suspicion part of the fire, only to say they are investigating. the sheriff's office says they will help in that investigation. this fire did require a massive response from other surrounding agencies, their main goal when they arrived was it to save the jim mace yum and it looks like they were successful in doing that. we're live in the santa cruz mountain, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." all lanes of highway 101 through the peninsula back open.

this after the roadway was shut down overnight so crews could once again repair power lines that fell across that crowded highway friday might. >> "today in the bay" bob redell live in burlingame this morning. bob, seems strange to say, but drivers are relieved they are only dealing with the typical monday morning commute and not a freeway shut down. >> reporter: from what i can see in the background it looks like highway 101 is moving smoothly in both directions after pg&e workers were able to restring this type of high powered transmission line over the freeway. this is transmission line that was knocked down during an accident on friday night. so again, more your morning commute both northbound and southbound directions of 101 reopened here in burlingame and millbrae in time for you to get to your jobs at work. now, it was friday night that highway 101 was shut down, shut down for most of the weekend on and off after a construction crew working on broadway friday night accidentally knocked down once of the transmission towers

sending those high voltage power lines on to the freeway. no one was hurt but the road was shut down from around 9:30 on friday night until around 4:30 saturday afternoon and then again yesterday while pg&e installed a temporary transmission tower and respanned 1,500 feet of high voltage power line over the freeway. >> is it possible that the highway would have to be shut down again when the permanent tower is put back in in? >> you know, until that work is engineered and we have a better idea of what the permanent solution is it would be premature to speculate at this point. >> reporter: the only closure is the off ramp to the broadway avenue overpass, which is right behind me here in burlingame i but again, both northbound, southbound 101 reopened 4:00 this morning in time for your morning commute. reporting live here am burlingame, bob redell, "today in the bay." it's 6:05. two armed robbers on the loose this morning. had they targeted an east bay convenience store pistol

whipping the clerk am a face. this happened on monument boulevard around 5:00 last night. a man with a gun demanded money from the clerk, can despite getting the money officers say the gunman hit the clerk in the face with his gun. during that attack the suspect's gun then went off and the bullet hit a nearby window. the gunman went into a getaway car driven by another man and sped off. the clerk is recovering this morning at the hospital. a deadly shooting along san francisco's embarcadero is renung the sanctuary city debate in the south bay. the accused killer is an undocumented immigrant who had been deported several times. >> today santa clara county leaders will be talking about whether to give immigration and customs endorsement a two days heads up before the release of serious or violent inmates. this is an issue that has captured national attention >> reporter: the south bay has a long history of sanctuary policies. santa clara county was one of the first sanctuary communities in the nation. it's a policy of separating local law enforcement from

immigration i'm use had a could soon come to an end. 80 people interrupted the santa clara county supervisors meeting for 15 minutes last week, the last time had this this issue came up for discussion. the board is to consider giving the immigration and customs enforcement agency 48 hours before releasing some inmates. one community activist says that fear of deportation can leave people vulnerable to crime, but sheriff laurie smith has said serious and violent offenders should not be protected from deportation. here is what they told us last week. >> we fear that the community who already may have distrust of calling police in cases of crime will not be calling people in domestic violence situations, will not be calling authorities for fear of deportation. >> i do honestly believe the people who are serious and violent felonies, that have been convicted, we should at least notify ice if they are in this country illegally. >> reporter: now, in the two

months since kate steinle's murder on pier 14 allegedly by unundocumented immigrant with a long list of convictions and deportations a number of bay area communities have reconsidered their sanctuary policies. according to the mercury news they break it down at alameda, contra costa, san mateo and marin counties that are now cooperating with ice. san francisco where kate steinle was killed has not. today's meeting is at 10:30 this morning at the county building in west san jose and the group debating the sanctuary issue today is the one that will recommend the poel si for the full board. up to now slk's policy was to refuse immigration holds unless ice paid for them, something that federal agency had been unwilling to do. >> very interesting. >> a very emotional issue for folks, too. new details on an outbreak at san quentin prison. we are learning a total of six inn planes now have legionnaires' disease. the outbreak was discovered last week after an inmate was rushed to the hospital.

legionnaires' is a type of in a and it's spread by mist from water containing that bacteria. the diagnosis forced the prison to turn off its water supply on friday, it faucets and showers have to stay dry until they figure out the source of the outbreak. inmates are using portable showers and getting water shipped from outside. another 51 inmates are also being monitored for symptoms. police and firefighters say an aerosol can likely caused an explosion and grass fire in san jose. officers happened to be nearby and actually heard the bang and then saw flames shoot out of a creek bed. it was before noon yesterday near coyote creek and tully road. it burned less than an acre and was under control within an hour. a homeless encampment is here by. a bike in big sir did turn tragic for a woman were the east bay who slipped, fell and drowned on friday. search and rescue crews recovered that woman's body in the ocean near mcway falls, right by julia fire burns state

park. it was believed she was climbing down a cliff without proper equipment and fell down. authorities identified her as 20-year-old medina far raz from sun city. >>. if you're heading to the beaches watch out for strong rip currents and large breakers of the high surf advisory is in effect until tond. officials say people should avoid fishing off rocks and a remainder to never turn your back to the ocean. it's also a nice start to our day. want to check the forecast though with meteorologist kari hall. >> and the nice weather from the weekend continues into today. 61 degrees is the temperature now in livermore, san jose, sunnyvale, 6 had concord, 52 in napa. today's highs up to 89 degrees in gilroy, half-moon bay 72 degrees, the marina will be at 68 degrees. mostly sunny skies throughout the day. napa tops out at 85 degrees, oakland 76 and 85 degree in danville.

at 6:14. a developing story. a possible school poisoning in western afghanistan sent 100 girls to the hospital. the girls became violently ill after spraying an air freshener in class this morning. investigators are trying to figure out whether it was an act of sabotage by taliban militants or if there was something wrong with the spray itself. all of the girls thankfully are expected to be okay. today a court appearance for a man accused of ambushing and killing a houston sheriff's deputy. deputies say shannon miles shot and killed darren goforth on friday. goforth was a ten-year veteran with the force and miles is facing a charge of capital murder. authorities say miles shot fwoert in the back while the deputy was filling up his patrol car at a gas station. ballistics showed the weapon used to kill goforth and a weapon in miles' possession. the cameraman killed in last week's deadly shooting on live

television will be remembered today at the virginia high school that he once attended. adam ward's family will be at salem high school and they're asking folks to wear the school colors as a tribute. hundreds gathered for a memorial service yesterday in roanoke to honor both journalisted child by their former colleague. jeff marks remembered alison parker and adam ward for the joy they provided as much as their hard work and dedication to their jobs. >> i want to play softball with adam again and i want to see alison dance. and i will in the wonderful memories they gave me, they gave us. >> and marks added that he hopes people can turn anger about what happened into positive action. he's also called for a greater awareness about getting help to those who are in need of mental health care. it is 6:16. hollywood mourning a popular filmmaker whose movies scared millions.

good old freddy kruegerer. wes craven the creator actually died yesterday after a long bought with cancer. 76 years old. craven's "nightmare on elm street" series is credited with reinventing the horror genre. later his movies "scream" and three sequels took horror to a whole other level. in a statement his family says craven lied in his los angeles home surrounded by loved ones. wall street may be am for another wild ride when the markets open in under 15 minutes. investors got their share of ups and downs last week when stocks experienced some of the biggest swings in years. right now it's looking like another slide when the markets open. asian stocks sold off today and dow futures pointing lowered keyed by comments by a federal reserve member suggesting an interest rate hike may still be in the works. we are in the midst of hurricane season and google rolling out new features to help users in the case of severe

weather. google public alerts is going to send alerts to your smartphone or computer if you happen to be in the path of a big storm. the advice could range from charge your phone to evacuate to high ground. government agencies are teaming up with google to provide are up to date details. google is going to get the information out there, plus google search results will show your location this comparison to the storm's path. no need to get a life jacket just yet, especially in the bay area. >> and it will be great, nice, quiet, calm, cool and as we start out this morning mostly clear skies as we take a live look at the -- from san francisco toward the bay bridge you see that the sun is rising. not a whole lot to complain about except for the fact that it's monday, but, hey, the weather is thighs. you will get out of bed a little easier and get the workweek started. here is what it looks like right now, all across the bay area it's in the lower 60s, south bay and peninsula 61 degrees.

highs today will be pretty much like where he had. no major changes here. but then as we go through the week it continues to cool off and while we're feeling nice quiet calm weather here is a look what's happening out in the pacific. for the first time in history we have three major hurricanes rolling out over the open pacific, the good news is that none of these storms will affect any land. take a look at these storms, jimena is a category 4, ygnacio category 3 and kilo is a category 4. a lot going on there. we have a nice fallike pattern as a trough sets up along the coast. over the next couple of face we will get more morning clouds, even some drizzle. also the breezy conditions will be kicking up to keep our temperatures nice and cool. here is a look at the outlook for the week in san francisco 72 degrees today and take a look at these cooler than average temperatures, highs in the upper 60s, by friday up to 70 degrees.

if you are already making plans for the weekend it will be a little bit warmer than what we just had, it will be in the 70s and 80s, even some 90s in the north bay as well as the tri-valley and south bay. so after a nice cool week it will be heating up this weekend. let's see if the commute is heating up out there with mike. it is, kari. this oakland, this is our live look from our photographer alan there, these are the ruse on the shoulder. look at all of the sets of flashing lights. this is below the building where we have our cam ration that's why it's tough to see, they are clearly working on the dirt or at least just off the roadway. there's more cleanup to do, this may take a while judging by the amount of crew there and the fact they paved to have involved fish and game. the live camera that we have through the oakland area, that's the overhead shot of the same crew right here in this area. you see there's absorbent right here, water way here and bridge they are working next to, that's the concern is that the fuel has gone into the waterway, again, fish and game is on scene

helping give their assessment as well. we should see the slow down continue because one lane is blocked south pennsylvania the coliseum. s that is the slowest portion for oakland southbound 880. there's your backup at the bay bridge, no surprises for the north part of the bay, east bay or north bay itself coming down through golden gate bridge and 101. the south bay northbound 101 starts to sort itself out after a series of crashes, lee of them at old bay shore. they have all cleared from the roadway. palo alto sews you the peninsula just starting to wake up. this this side of the bay just fine. roadways reopened through burlingame and millbrae after a tough weekend there. it's 880 south past the coliseum that's the slow one. a lot of people wiping the sleep out of their eyes. here is a question, how soon do parents approach the talk? we are not talking about the birds and bees but new guidelines published by a leading pediatrician group says parents need to talk to their

a special tribute eld at the sonoma raceway for an indy car driver killed last sunday. fans and fellow drivers paid tribute to justin wilson yesterday at the gopro grand prix of sonoma. part of that tribute included a personally designed logo the drivers wore on their helmets and also on their cars. wilson was struck in the head with a piece of debris during a race a week ago in pennsylvania and died one day later from his injuries. baseball fans in atlanta took part in a moment of silence before yesterday's braves game. at the remembered the fan, 60-year-old greg am murrey who plunged to his death during saturday's game against the new york yankees. he was a long time season ticket holder. he fell from the upper tech apparently after getting up to boo a yankees player. it was a sad sight, but settingers o did not suspect foul play. okay. so football practice.

a very good monday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. we are tracking the weather and the roads. mike inouye keeping close tabs on your morning commute. we start right now with meteorologist kari hall. good morning. >> good morning. after a beautiful weekend across the bay we will see more of that weather heading into the week and some more of the cool weather to start out the morning. it is 52 degrees in the north bay, san francisco is at 60 degrees as the sunrises you see that we do have mostly clear skies. a lot of sunshine had this afternoon, 80 in the peninsula, the east bay will be the high today. south bay 82 degrees, tri-valley up to 87, san francisco 72 and 85 in the north bay. looking good in the weather, but how about that commute, mike? we had a couple of rubble spots, still very slow south through oakland. this is the reason why, there

delay is arbitration and unfair. that rule has been put on hold while the court of appeals weighs harris' appeal. in the last 35 years nearly 1,000 criminals have been sent to death row, only 13 have been executed. new details now the power is back on for house thousands of can customers in sonoma county. look at that tree that fell over. yesterday afternoon a big tree taking a topple and also two power lines down with it. that is near gernville initially close to 4,000 just percent lost power. all lanes of highway 101 through the peninsula are back open. the roadway has shut down overnight so crews could repair power lines that fell across the highway on friday night. down. >> reporter: the danger is gone and as i can see over my shoulder off camera it does look like the commute is moving at the limit which is good news. at 4:00 this morning both directions southbound and northbound highway 101 reopened here through burlingame in millbrae as promised by chp. the issue of course being a downed transmission line that came down friday night. highway 101 shut down on and off for missouri of the weekend, southbound at millbrae, fort bound at anza after a construction crew working on broadway accidentally knocked down a transmission tower sending high voltage power lines on to the freeway, remarkably no one was hurt. the road was shut down from 9:30 from i night until 4:30 yesterday after and yesterday as well. they also had to restring 1,500 feet of the high power

transmission line across the freeway. again, that was done in time at 4:00 this morning in time for the morning commute. reporting live here in burlingame, bob redell, "today in the bay." a lot of busy overnight work there. so 101 looking good in that stretch. let's check the rest of our highways this morning, freeways, see if there is a lot of green behind you, mike. >> and there is. 101, in fact, 101 is looking better than 280, because southbound 280 typically shows the build and a little slowing light there now. the broadway off ramps are still closed because you saw all the work behind bob, but the freeway itself moves just fine. anywhere north of palo alto moving well. starting the build because of that san mateo bridge and traffic coming over 92. here is your south bay with your typical build. around the bay the color patterns are what you would expect. tri-valley for south 680 and hayward off of 238 for southbound 880 m gentlemaning up there. southbound 880 past the coliseum that is the unusually slow area, still down one lane. let me show you what was going

cold nights. >> she was really at the end of the time period when we thought that she could survive. >> but she did survive and rescuers used helicopters, horses even a drone to find her. they say this is the longest case of survival that they have ever seen. strong lady there. rescue teams never gave up hope of minding hiyuki harwood. >> we have contact with our missing person. i have coordinates and i am going to need h 40 for an extraction. she is injured. >> he actually was pretty calm about t a little hard to hear but the dispatcher says that they had contacted harwood and she was injured. harwood's family says she will spend the next few days getting much needed rest. probably a nice hot bath. another special thank you as a college student now american

hero trying to get back to every day life. yesterday sacramento state student anthony sadler returned to his church where his father is a miss for and there was a standing ovation, no one prouder than pops. >> but we are so glad he is home and home safe. my son, anthony. >> give it up for anthony. everyone so excited and caught up in the emotion. the pastor can does happen to be the 23 he recalled's father. just over a week ago sadler along with two close friends jumped into action on board a train in europe taking down a man that authorities say was in the middle of executing a terrorist attack. while sadler is seeing away from the media he did give a few hugs to people in the crowd, maybe a relative or two there. we're very happy to see him home he safely. >> there's nobody in sacramento right now when you go around our city that doesn't want to raise their son to be just like anthony sadler. >> sacramento mayor kevin johnson one of many who attended

the rest of your approach through oakland toward the bay bridge moves typically. you do have a little more slowing through berkeley because of that volume of traffic. castro valley there's hayward and a slower drive develops across that san mateo bridge. the northbound routes are looking great. earlier crash left some debrisen in a couple of lanes there's slowing, i don't think there's traffic break but we will track that. meanwhile the rest of your approach north 101 at 680 a live look there. we had it jammed all morning from a certificatesees of crashes around mckee but now things are sorting out to a nice smooth morning commute right there. it is 6:52. news details on an outbreak at a san quentin prison. a total of six inmates now have legionnaires' disease. the outbreak was discovered last week after an inmate was rushed to the hospital. legionnaires' is a type of pneumonia and it's spread by mist from water containing the bacteria. the diagnosis forced the prison to turn off its water friday.
