let's go the dylan. >> hey, carson. we are taking selfies here. your poor phone is so cracked. get this woman a new phone. >> i know. i'll save up. >> we'll get there eventually. let's look at the weather across the country. we have scattered pockets of heavier rain near florida. the remnants of erika producing rain through parts of the carolinas. in the northwest, we have a few more days of rain in the forecast. not so much the wind but we'll see upper 60s, low 70s and significant rain that way. tomorrow, still raining in the northwest, down through florida. the rest of the country, really enjoying a nice first day of september. temperatures will be in the upper 80s and lower 90s. really it doesn't look like the fall-like temperatures are anywhere in sight. it will stay good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. we're in the mid-60s now with a lot of sunshine across the bay.
8:33 am
and expect a high of 75 degrees in san francisco. the north bay topping out at 85 degrees. east bay will be at 80 degrees and the tri-valley up to 87. some seasonable temperatures with mostly sunny skies and the winds picking up as we go through the day. we'll also have some cooler weather as we head into the start of september. our temperatures going down just a few more degrees as we head into the middle of the week. and that's your latest forecast. guys? >> today's books is brought to you by the new kindle voyage. passionately crafted for readers. >> what does it mean to be strong? through >> what does it mean to be strong? author bring they brown has zeroed in on four key principles and what it takes to get back up after a fall. >> the best way to describe worthy is i am enough. the practical part is making it work it's practice. it's line -- it's like, it's not
8:34 am
an attitude. it's not a -- i wish it was a one time, oh, my god, i totally get what she's saying. i am worthy. it doesn't happen like that. it's a treat fight every day. if you put shame in a petri dish and douse it with secrecy, silence and judgment it grows exponenti exponentially. if you douse it with empathy, it can't survive. vulnerability is uncertainty, risk and emotional exposure. so i think most of us were raised to mitigate risk, uncertainty, vulnerability is weakness. you armor up, soldier on, push it through. but that armor is really heavy. and it prevents people from knowing us and seeing us, which is our deepest human yearnings. is to be known and seen. and to know love and belonging. so i think we're afraid of it because it means we risk being
8:35 am
hurt. your willingness to show up and try and let people know that you care about something. when you don't know what the outcome is going to be, that's courage. >> renee brown's new book is called "rising strong, the reckoni reckoning, the rumble, the revolution." so many people are fans of you and what you say really resonates. why do you think that is? why do you think this has caught on so much? >> you know, i think it's because i have been doing it for 13 years and i think we're tired of being afraid. i think we want to show up and be seen and try new things. even though it's a hypercritical kind of unforgiving world. i think we're ready to be brave. >> we have a lot of brave folks who tweeted us questions or asked us questions. first one is from colleen in in the plaza. what is your question? >> what do you say to your child when you want to encourage them
8:36 am
to be the best when trying out for a team? >> i don't know if it can make it. yeah. >> i think we have to retrain the trying part, so we're such a a -- you know, are we going to make the team, are we going to score, are we going to -- so to reframe it as your willingness to go out for something you care about, that's the courageous part. to put yourself out there. sometimes we have to check the stories kids tell themselves. we make up the huge stories about i'm not good enough, i'm not strong enough, i'm not athletic enough. we also help reality check those because those are a way to protect ourselves. >> a measure of success is really in the trying n the going for it. >> showing up. >> rochelle has a question. go ahead. >> what are some things that you struggled with and are those things what have inspired you to write your book? >> good question. >> yes. >> yeah, of course putting work
8:37 am
out into the world. for me it's a book or a pep talk. not just that. just trying to put -- make a contribution in a hypercritical world. you stay afraid all the time. you know, you don't want to look at comments. you don't want to -- so for me, writing this book, i want to live a brave life. if you're brave enough, awesome enough, you're going to fall. this is not a book for people who have fallen but a book for people who are brave enough to try. >> along with the name of it. we have a twitter question. this came from lauren bowman, how do we not shut down after sharing feelings about our pain and then being told to be more positive. >> it's the worst. >> you can understand why some -- why did i share it at all? >> i think when people say be more positive, what they're really saying is i'm not comfortable with the pain you're in. >> yeah. >> so i think we have to choose carefully and share our stories and struggles with people who have earned the right to hear them. and also have the courage to ask
8:38 am
for what we need. if i say, listen, i'm really struggling at work, i need you to listen. i don't need any advice, i need to know i'm not alone in the struggle. to ask for what you need. >> then maybe it's a relief for the listener. they know they're not on the hook to try to supply an answer. last one from sue ludwig, can you talk about using perspective to shame ourselves, ie, i'll keep my story quiet is not as bad -- >> dot dot dot. >> i get that all the time. we call it comparative -- when we rank ordering how everyone's story is but that comes from a place of believing that empathy and compassion are finite. if i give you a slice, i only have this much to give. but empathy is infinite. just because, you know, i'm thinking, i don't want to ask for help around my divorce because this person has a sick child, we have enough to go around. compassion is infinite. >> the giving is beneficial to everybody. >> yeah. including the giver.

fist dose around 11 to 12. then a booster shot at 16. to confer that immune any through the college age group. more importantly, this year you may remember from a year ago we had outbreaks in princeton of a new sero group of meningitis b not covered by the quadrivalent we are recommending now. if there is an outbreak in your area and you are at risk your child can receive the new vaccine that will confer immunity to serogroup b. >> start at 11 or 12. >> if you don't get the meningitis vaccine until 16 or 17 you don't need a booster. >> to one that's gotten attention, the hpv. a recent study found only 60% of girls and 40% of boys get one dose of the hpv vaccine. why is this important? >> this is an important one that they are only getting one dose. it is three shots. they need to be given at month 0, two and six. if you don't do the series of
8:43 am
three you are not going to have full immunity. the vaccine is recommended for children as young as 9 but generally around age 11 to 12. this is so important to protect against cervical cancer. the new one -- as well as the vulva, anal area. very important. in the last six months or so, i think in december of 2014, the fda approved a new gardisil which is gardisil 9 which the strains, oral lesions and genital warts we are conferring immune if i for more strains causing cervical cancer. >> this wasn't around for a lot of people. is it too late for adults? >> for women up to and including the age of 26. for men up to and including 21. >> to the next one. tdap. what does it protect against? >> the tdap is tetanus,

diphtheria and per us ttussis. we know our children get these starting at age 2. they get five of those. around 11 or 12 the cdc is recommending the kids get a booster shot of the three vaccines all in one called the tdap. >> another important group you say should get the shot as well. >> pregnant women. as i mentioned a newborn infant cannot get the series until 2 months. they have to get quite a few before they have immunity. if you are pregnant you should get this to protect your newborn child and other ifs you have exposure to them. >> one more here. the seasonalle flu vaccine. is it too early? >> it's already available. i generally recommend to patients to wait a little bit until mid to late september, early october. you want that immunity to last through the flu season which can go as long as may. generally once you get the flu vaccine it takes two weeks to build up anti-bodies and it
8:45 am
should last throughout the flu sb season. >> and there is a flu vaccine on the horizon that can be taken as a pill? >> they completed the phase 1 study. they are talking about universal flu vaccine which can, i would say, mutate along with the mutation to maintain immunity. last year we had difficulty with the vaccine. >> good reminder. dr. azar, good to see you. >> thank you. >> siri is grilling fresh vegetables for a pasta dish you have to try. first, this is "today" on nbc.
