more than 7,000 pages released under court order. roughly 125 are now classified. although they weren't at the time they were sent. this time, none were top secret, but 125 were classified confidential in the last few days. including this 2010 e-mail about iran. press reports the state department was softening the stance in nuclear talks with iran. she writes, the "wall street journal" says it's a reversal of position. what gives? clinton's private e-mail system caused confusion. close aide huma abedin writes her some official e-mails aren't getting through. she said it's clearly a state versus outside e-mail issue. a member of the state department help desk seemed unaware the e-mail was clinton's. abedin writing, they had no idea it was you. they cautioned restraint in d

7:05 am
with this latest batch of 7,000-plus e-mails, is there a smoking gun on that issue? >> no, there's not. there's the whole knowingly. remember, knowingly is the key word. whether she knowingly passed around classified information in an unclassified setting. there is no evidence to suggest that that story doesn't hold up. let's remember, these are e-mails she chose to release. these are still e-mails she chose to release and gave the state department, so there's always that caveat. the second thing is while she may be out of legal jeopardy as far as this release is concerned, there's still political efforts. the most damning e-mail is the one from huma that says, hey, i.t. didn't know they had your e-mail in here. there was an e-mail in for. she couldn't get e-mail. she said they didn't know about your private e-mail setup, the state department i.t. it's a reminder, how is this more convenient to have your own home brewed system. who has i.t. at home? isn't it easier for anybody out there to get your e-mail via work? i think that excuse is the one
7:06 am
that's the least believable. i still think the most logical explanation is she was trying to get out of congressional action and freedom of information acts. >> they have taken great pains to point out this is a media-driven story, a partisan story from republicans in congress who want to prevent her from being president. do you see evidence, now, though, inside the campaign they view this as a real problem? >> they know they have a perception problem among other democrats. members of congress want to help them. they don't know how to. they feel as if the campaign isn't giving them the explanations they need. there's been some internal friction, some led by former president clinton who is annoyed there aren't more surrogates defending hillary clinton on this. you're going to see a little bit of an attempt by the campine to appease nervous democrats. >> let's talk republicans. andrea pointed out monmouth university poll, likely iowa republican caucusgoer, donald

trump is still on top, but now tied by ben carson. are we talking enough about ben carson? >> no, we're not. when i saw the des moines register poll on sunday, and this is the second showing him surgingering he's leading among the second most important group in iowa, christian conservatives. if you look at the last two iowa winners, they won it thanks to evangelical conservatives, mike huckabee and rick santorum. here he is, the outsider and an evangelical, and appealing to evangelicals. you combine that, that might be an unstoppable force in iowa. even with donald trump. you take donald trump out of the equation, and carson may be more powerful. let's see how he handles his moment in the sun. >> let's talk about jeb bush. seems like he decided to have a change in strataemg. much more aggressive, going on offense against donald trump. does that make sense for him in the sense the trump voters were never going to be his voters no matter what, and looking strong and going after trump may please his base, the establishment?
7:08 am
>> his theory of the case is this, the campaign, there are 30% for trump, let's say. and he's at 100% name i.d. that means 70% of republicans know him 100% and don't want anything to do with donald tr p trump. the problem is donald trump doesn't play by ordinary rules. when you pick a fight, he can pick one back. >> chuck todd, thank you very much. >> thanks. meantime, investigators in phoenix are trying to figure out if they have a serial sniper on their hands after a string of shootings on the same interstate. here is joe fryer. >> the search is on this morning after the state patrol says four vehicles were shot within 48 hours all along a single stretch of interstate 10 in phoenix. >> next thing i know, i hear a loud bang. didn't think anything of it. >> then, when robert stopped for a coke, he noticed something unusual on his tour bus. >> come back, i do a walk around, i'm like, that's a bullet hole. >> that bullet tore through the
