edge but in mourning, tributes to the slain officer piling up here at the fox lake police department. meanwhile, the schools are closed as part of this search and there's been a bit of a shift. they have given up the focus search on a two square mile area in favor of what they call saturation patrol. they pledge they won't give up until the three suspects are in custody. overnight, federal, state and local authorities executed the massive intense manhunt for the three men suspected much gunning down lieutenant charles gl gliniewicz. >> has support has been unmatched and dearly missed. >> reporter: gliniewicz was on routine patrol when he radioed he was engaging three suspects engaged in suspicious activity. when backup arrived. >> send everybody you possibly can, an officer is down. >> reporter: fellow officers

found him shot and his gun and other gear missing. >> suspects to be considered armed and dangerous. >> reporter: heavy armed officers in s.w.a.t. gear flooded the area, in the air with helicopters and on the ground with k9 units, the entire community on virtual lockdown, told to stay behind closed doors. >> we're asking residents in the fox lake area to please be on the alert if they see anything suspicious. >> reporter: the community is on edge. >> i will not be going home until i know that everything is okay. >> reporter: across fox river, residents paid tribute to the officer known as gi joe or lt for his rank. for three decades he mentored young people giving a taste of law enforcement as seen on videos he posted on facebook. >> he would always be there if you needed them. truly horrible. he makes all of us want to become a police officer more and more. >> reporter: gliniewicz was on the police force for more than 30 years, he talked about retiring last month but the

chief talked him into staying a little bit longer to help out. savannah? >> so sad. john yang in fox lake, illinois. let's turn to shawn henry, nbc news analyst and aformer assistaassist ant director of the fbi. it sounds the manhunt began quickly after the shooting happened. do you think it's likely the suspects are still in the general area? >> you know, savannah, we're not sure. there's opportunity to get onto the interstate there, whether they are holed up in a residence in some nearby building there or whether they are able to get out to take off and evade the police before they could set up perimeter, it's unclear. what we have to remember is these people, this likely happened unannounced. this was not premeditated but probably did not have any money. they don't have food or water. they need to get those basic

necessities and they are going to have to look for them somewhere. we're going to rely on the community take taking some efforts to obtain resources. >> we know so little about them beyond this description, two white men and one black man. do you think police might know more than letting on publicly, perhaps their identity? >> they very well might. we have an initial crime scene and there may be a cigarette butt or discarded coffee cup. there may be fingerprints. if in fact it was a burglary in process, they might have been able to collect evidence there. they might have information. this is also a small community, about 10,000 people, it's very probable i think these are people from the community in the area and that somebody may know who these folks are. >> do you think they are still together or maybe split up thinking that was a better way to elude capture? >> i would think they would split up since the only information we have right now is two white males and one black male.

that's all people have to go on. if you see those people walking down the street they are obviously going to be a 911 call. i think were they to split up, this makes it three separate fugitive investigations rather than one. much more challenging for law enforcement and difficult to apprehend these people. >> terrible loss for that community. shawn henry, thank you. >> now to the race for the white house. both parties making big headlines this morning, the gloves are off for republican candidates jeb bush and donald trump, locked an aggressive battle of ads and words. joe biden is stepping into the political spotlight for first time since serious speculation began about his possible plans to run for president. with a speech later today in the key swing state of florida. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is in miami. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, you said it, florida is a critical battlegrounds and today joe biden will get his first taste of what a potential 2016 run

would feel like, with hillary clinton looking increasingly vulnerable, people close to joe biden tell nbc news he's reassessing the odds and recalculating and he's been finding a lot of support from his donors as well as from potential staff. people have told him he needs the time to wait that he certainly has it. first potential deadline for joe biden may be about six weeks from now, october 13th, that's the first democratic debalt rig bait right now and last week told committee members of the dnc he might not have the emotional fuel to run, that's what he says he's assessing right now. the draft biden folks, trying to compel joe biden to run tell me they have hired staff for first time in another key state, the state of south carolina. so far biden has been touching all of the bases and speech today is about the importance of community colleges here in florida. he'll speak to jewish leaders on the iran deal as well.

drop of the year. this morning the blue chips climbed about 200 points just after the opening bell. asian stocks also recovered from sharp losses earlier today. six baltimore police officers indicted in the death of freddie gray are in court today. hearings will be held over the next two weeks to decide several key issues including whether charges should be dismissed and whether the trial should be moved out of baltimore. freddie gray was arrested in april and suffered a spinal cord injury while in police custody. he died a week after his arrest. city officials are now gearing up for protest and potential unrest during the two weeks of hearings. back to that dra matdic video that shows a construction worker in the direct line of fire of a steam pipe explosion and seconds before the blast you can hear a co-worker encourage him to climb out of the pipe. >> get out. >> video of this 2014 incident

just released by the county of san is a clara, california is part of an ongoing dispute with turner construction. the video shows a clear breakdown in safety protocol and turner construction setsz the county is trying to divert attention from the own mismanagement of the product. the man in the video was badly injured and never returned to his job. stunning allegations against two former employees at a day care center in new jersey. they are accused of encouraging children ranging in the ages from 4 to 6 to fight on camera and then sharing that video on social media. day care officials say the two employees were fired and none of the children involved in the fight appear to have suffered serious injuries and prosecutors believe that it only happened once. now to a fishtail like no other. we've seen how drones can take breath taking pictures and monitor wildfires and even deliver packages, but how about

issue marriage licenses to gay couples because of religious beliefs has until close of business today to comply. kim davis was ordered to appear in court on thursday. she could face jail time or fines. >> president obama wraps up his three-day tour of alaska today. the president used the trip to highlight the harmful effects of climate change on alaska's delicate landscape. now to an arrest three decades in the making. on tuesday, pro wrestling legend jimmy "superfly" snuka was arraigned in a decades old murder of his girlfriend. craig melvin has the story. craig, good morning to you. >> savannah, good morning. jimmy snuka is out of jail on bond. this arrest comes two years after two journalists started digging on a cold case so old when the death in question happened one of the journalists hadn't been born yet. >> all we have to do is right in there. >> reporter: his fans know him simply as "superfly."

>> "superfly" is 15 feet high! >> reporter: jimmy snuka entertained arenas for more than three decades with his signature flair and high flying flash. now a cold case dating back more than 40 years revived. the pro wrestling legend charged with murder. prosecutors say in 1983 while on tour with the then world wrestling federation snuka called for medical help from a pennsylvania motel. his 23-year-old girlfriend nancy argentina was gasping for air and oozing from the mouth. she died at a local hospital. an autopsy found skull fractures and 39 contusions across her body. at the time snuka was the only person of interest but was never charged. that changed tuesday. the district attorney charged him with third degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. >> some additional witnesses came forward. more information was uncovered. mr. snuka wrote a book that the

grand jury considered in making the presentment. >> reporter: 30 years after her death, two journalists triggered renewed interest in the case with a feature that the d.a. acknowledged when announcing the renewed investigation. >> when i started working on the story, i never thought there would be charges against jimmy snuka. as we kept working on the story i thought the case became more compelling that maybe they might take a second look. >> reporter: world wrestling entertainment said wwe expresses continued sympathy to the family for their loss. ultimately, this legal matter will be decided by the injury additional system. snuka's daughter, herself a popular wrestler currently with the wwe, has not commented. now 72, snuka said he was diagnosed with stomach cancer earlier this year. in his 2012 autobiography he maintains innocence saying i

never hit nancy or threatened her. he said if i was guilty of anything it was cheating on my wife and that was it. he's expected back in court later this month for a preliminary hearing. savannah? >> thank you very much. >> now to the american heroes who stopped a terror attack on a train bound for paris. the last few weeks have been a whirlwind. france gave them that country's top honor. president obama called and their names are known around the world. one of them sat down with lester holt for an nbc news exclusive. lester is here this morning. >> good morning. anthony sadler is a 23-year-old college student. he was on his first ever trip to europe. he was traveling with two friends who were in the military. he doesn't have any combat or first aid training but when a gunman entered the train car august 21, saturday sadler didn't hesitate to follow his friends into action. what alerted you that something was wrong? >> i was asleep. there was a gunshot, glass breaking. a train employee sprinted down

the aisle past us. that woke me up. i turned around to see the gunman entering the train car. my friend alek tapped spencer on the shoulder and said, go get him. spencer was first. i saw him make it to the gunman. i thought, we have a chance now. once he got there we followed up and did whatever we could to disarm him. >> reporter: you must have played in your mind how it could have gone the other way on that train? >> in the days since i thought how easily things could have gone the other way. when we got up to rush him, he did fire at spencer. it never went off. the whole time i was expecting a gunshot to go off, but it never came. >> reporter: next thing you know you're with the president of france having medals pinned on you. >> yeah, it was pretty surreal. i was out of the country for the first time trying to experience things. now i'm a hero in another country. it's crazy to think about. >> reporter: we share sacramento roots. you're a big deal here. >> yeah. >> reporter: my mother said, you know he's from sacramento. what's it like being back?

>> it's great. i love being back where i'm familiar. to be back in sacramento, around people i know, my friends and family. it's been pretty great. >> reporter: do you think we all may have this in us and not know it until we are put to the test of a feeling that i need to respond? >> i think so. i don't think i'm different from the average american. when people are faced with the situation i feel it is a choice. like you think, should i do something or should i go hide? i want everybody to know they should do something. me and spencer and alek have grown up talking about what we would do in those situations and we said we would act, but you never know. >> you never know until you are in a dangerous situation. >> yeah. you could always say it's different when it happens. i'm glad i was with those two. i wouldn't pick any other two people to go through that with. >> there is such an outpouring of support for these young men. there is even a fund to pay off

five years older. the older your heart, the higher your risk of disease. once you calculate your heart age you can lower it by making important changes to your health. dr. natalie azar, "today" medical contributor, will help us make sense of this. good to see you. so we all gave you a bunch of information. gender, age, blood pressure, bmi, whether or not we smoke, diabetic, all those things that go into the formula. let's do a reveal. >> okay. >> i will start. i'm 40 years old. my heart age is 41. one year older than my chronological age. is that a problem? >> that's a problem. >> really? >> one year? >> here's a really important take home from the study. the study wasn't meant to generate a number or a relative risk like if you are x number of years other your real age your risk for a heart attack or stroke is this much higher. it is meant to drive home the

"today" financial editor jean chatzky has tips to put the money back in your pocket. good morning. >> good morning. >> this can be confusing. break it down because we are talking about a savings of hundreds of thousands for real? >> for real. a hundred thousand dollars for a single person. two to three times that for a couple. and the mistake people make if they take it too early. >> this is your first tip. delay, delay, delay.

how does that work? >> essentially you can start taking social security at age 62. for every year you wait until age 70 you get a growth in the monthly benefit of about 8%. a benefit that's $750 at age 62 becomes a thousand when your full retirement age of 66 or 67. it's $1300 by the time you are 70. you get that extra money every month for the rest of your life. >> is there a way to predict what you would earn if you were able to delay? >> yeah. go to social security.gov/my statement. you can see it at 62, 66, 67 and 70. >> there will be people watching who say, i already started drawing on my social security. is it too late for me? >> no. you can have a do over at full retirement age. go to social security when you're 66 or 67 and say, stop my

benefits. at that point your benefits start to grow again. by the time you hilt age 70 they have grown by 32%. that's significant money. >> if you are married you have an added flexibility. explain how it works. >> okay. this is a strategy called file and suspend. what we want people to do is get their spousal benefit every year that goes unclaimed. here's how it works. easiest to understand in an example. your spouse is -- you have a higher earning spouse. a guy who is 66 typically. his wife is 62. at 66, he goes to social security and files for his benefits but he doesn't take them. at that point say they are worth about $2,000. she can start right then drawing her spousal benefits of $1,000 a month. >> and he doesn't have to get his. and these are his benefits. >> right. his benefits just continue to

martha stewart is here with a savory tart using what's left in the garden. >> good morning, martha. >> it's so beautiful here. >> and u.s. open season. you took a video. >> let's roll it. >> there you are in the stands. what do we have? >> this is the president's box and there is a squirrel. at first we didn't know what it was. it came back and forth six times. i got a lot of good pictures. >> that's the martha effect. she brings nature where she goes. >> it was fun. >> tell us what's in this. >> this is a delicious tart. we start with the crust. >> okay. >> the crust for a tart is the same as a pie crust. same as a quiche crust. it's two and a half cups of flour -- all purpose flour. two sticks of unsalted butter. feel how cold. hard and cold. you want a flaky and buttery crust. >> okay.

this goes into the food processor. you can do it by hand. takes three or four minutes by hand. >> i'll go that way. >> a teaspoon of sugar. a teaspoon of coarse salt. cover it up and it's just so simple. >> there you go. once it's done you add the water, a quarter of a cup of ice water to a half. no ice cubes. be careful. a lot of people throw the ice in there and you have wet spots in your dough. >> okay. >> after you finish that, wrap it, chill it, roll it out. look how nicely it rolls right onto your rolling pin. it is easily lifted. this is a hint for people afraid of pastry. roll it on the pin like that. >> flour it up first?

>> well, the less flour the better. it toughens the crust. put it into your tart shell. >> is there a secret to trimming it? >> of course. it's so easy. double the size. press it as quick as you can. you don't want it to get warm. if it does put it in the freezer or fridge. use the rolling pin and it comes right off. so simple. >> even savannah and i can to it. >> then chill it. savannah, maybe you can put this in the chill and get the one that's rolled out. essential for the tart is roasted garlic. >> big one or little? >> big one is fine. salt, pepper and a little bit of olive oil. make -- oh, great. make a little bit of a packet. roast this at 350 degrees for

about 45 minutes. so we can do that yesterday. you can have roasted garlic in the fridge. when it comes out it's fun. each clove can be squeezed right out. >> and it's sweeter. >> it's beautiful. it's nice just slathered on toasty bread. >> where do the vegetables come in? >> try slicing me a tomato. to a brown-green tomato. these are the nice heirloom tomatoes in the marketplace now and hopefully in you are i don't garden. >> this is the perfect time for tomatoes. >> right. >> when they're not good, they are not good. >> so good. see how i mashed up the garlic? >> mm-hmm. >> this is the base for the tart. >> it's a paste. >> it is. six or eight cloves or garlic. a couple of tablespoons.

now both sides must reach an agreement by friday or a new contractor will come in and finish that hospital work. there's now only one known survivor left of the great san francisco earthquake following the death of a woman in pebble beach. next april it's going to be 110 years since the great quake. family members say 113-year-old ruth newman died at the end of july. she was 5 years old when that quake struck. quake experts say the only known living survivor is a man who was 3 months old at the time of the quake now living in marrin county and apparently 110 years old. a look at weather and traffic after this break.
