a jacket before you get the day started. it's 59 degrees in the east bay and expect a high of 77 degrees. san francisco 68 degrees, so you look at all these temperatures they're cooler than where we should be for the beginning of september, but we are going right back to summer as we go into the weekend. i will show you those numbers coming up. right now mike has got a look at the morning commute. >> what commute there is. looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, no metering lights no backup here, pre labor day friday. we're likely to see a lighter flow of traffic. let's look at your transbay connector for the bay bridge. this is going to be popular over the weekend with bart shutting down starting at midnight tonight. open all day today for service. i will zoom the map out. light slowing out of the altamonte, no problems for dublin, a little slowing for hayward off the san mateo bridge. a live look to the north bay, southbound 101 things are building just a tiny bit for that volume.

really nothing going on right now for the north bay. back to you. all new this morning, a woman leads law enforcement on a high speed chase through the north bay. this started last night somewhere? santa rosa, but we have not been told what actually prompted the chase. witnesses say that driver was going 110 miles per hour at one point and obviously driving recklessly. the woman eventually crashed into the center median on highway 101 right near the marin/sonoma county line. then she refused to get out. >> driver, this is your last warning. >> what you are seeing there is officers firing nonlethal rounds into the car and the driver eventually got out with her hands up and they arrested her. get ready for shut down number two, it's starting at midnight, bart service between service and oakland will be shut down for the entire labor day weekend. it could cause a major wrinkle in your holiday plans if it includes heading to the other side of the bay.

>> "today in the bay" chuck coppola live in san francisco this morning. this bart closure means thousands more drivers are going to be hitting the roads instead. >> reporter: absolutely. you are going to see a lot more drivers on the bridges as well. the transbay tube closes at midnight tonight and stays closed for repairs between -- all the way until 4:00 a.m. tuesday morning. now, at embarcadero station where we are right now that station will be open, but if you want to get across the bay you will have to get out of the station, walk two blocks to the transbay bus terminal for a bus across the bay bridge to the 19th street station in oakland. now, if you are on the east side of the bay and you want to get to the city, 19th street is your last stop to get off and catch a bus across the bridge. there will be shuttles, however torques take you to 12th street station and west oakland if you happen to live or work closer to those. all of this to repair the tracks near the west oakland station. >> we are offering buses, we have 77 buses ready to go, ready

to take from you 19th street to the temporary transbay terminal in san francisco and from there you can walk to embarcadero station or hop on a muni bus or walk wherever you want to go. >> reporter: there will be additional ferry service between alameda, oakland and san francisco as well as from vallejo to san francisco. during the last shut down for repairs there was noticeable increase in traffic on the san mateo bridges, dumbarton bridge, richmond san rafael bridge as well as the bay bridge. bart says allow extra time. if you are riding bart this weekend allow 30 minutes extra across the bay. reporting live in san francisco, i'm chuck coppola, "today in the bay." it's 6:03. a developing story now, police will be standing guard this morning as students return to clat at sacramento city college. ì% a candlelight vigil for the victims. the school confirms all three

are students. police say earlier in the afternoon a group of men got into a fight near the campus, one of them pulled out a handgun and started shooting. >> nowadays everybody has a gun and we are just out here shooting ourself. for what reason, i don't know, but now somebody else has to explain to their kids why he is not coming home snoot campus was on lock down for three hours as police searched for the gunman who is still on the run. after five days of testimony spread across two weeks a san francisco judge is expected to announce later today if juan francisco lopez-sanchez will or will not stand trial for the murder of kate steinle. lopez-sanchez is undocumented immigrant accused in the july shooting of steinle on pier 14. her killing ignited a national debate over san francisco's status as a, quote, sanctuary city. lopez-sanchez is a five time deportee who kept returning to the u.s. prosecutors want to convicted him of second degree murder but

defense attorneys say that that shooting was an accident. their job is to protect inmates but this morning three correctional deputies are hired bars themselves accused of beating a mentally ill man to death while he was in custody at the santa clara county main jail. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us now and, kris, later today families with loved ones inside the jail will gather to demand answers. >> reporter: that rally is not to oent oenl to dee cry the death of michael tyree but also dee cry what activists say are failures within the system that allow this kind of abuse to happen. the three accused deputies are behind bars this morning, though not at the santa clara county jail where they worked and where they allegedly beat that inmate to death. they were transferred. they say the three deputies were the only ones that entered michael tyree's cell the night he died. the three do not have the same training as peace officers. sheriff smith would not answer our questions about that instead

she stuck to a script and teleprompter and offered condolences to the inmate's family. >> the disappointment and disgust that i feel cannot be overstated. >> reporter: michael tyree died of blunt force at the hands of another person, that is medical speak for beating so severe at the died of internal bleeding. the irony is that tire rooe wasn't even supposed to be there. a lawyer for his family said he had already served a five day sentence and was in the jail he is protective care unit because it was supposed to be the safest place for him to be while he waited for a mental health unit to open up. the three correctional deputies are on unpaid leave, they have turned in their badges and the sheriff confirms the fbi is also investigating. today's protest outside the santa clara county jail is set for noon and of course nbc bay area will be there. sam. >> we will continue to follow it. thank you. inmates at san quinten are finally going to get to shower

in their housing units as the prison is recovering from an outbreak of legionnaires' disease. visiting hours for the general population inmates is going to resume this weekend. as of today there are seven confirmed cases of inmates with legionnaires' disease, a disease which surfaced last week there forcing the prison to shut off its water fly. it spread through contaminated water. one of the north bay's holiday hot spots could be off limits in labor day weekend because of lethal algae. the press democrat reports a dog died moments after swimming in the russian river last weekend. the animal tested positive for a lethal toxin produced by blue green algae. warning signs about the algae went up last month. it's one of the busiest weekends of the year at the river with thousands expected. the county has not officially closed the river to the public just yet. by now you recognize that face. he is an international hero

answered received a hero's welcome. that's airman first class spencer stone. the california man who was officially home this morning after stopping a gunman on a train bound for paris. his plane touched down at travis air force base last night. military and family lined up to take pictures and shake the hand of the man who saved so many lives. >> i think it was great what he did, he stepped up and did his job really. he responded, he has had great training in the air force, i guarantee is it t. >> it was significant for me to bring the boys so they can see how important it is to just make sure that you are honoring and say thank you to someone who saved lives. >> just acting on instinct, too. there will be thousands of people and signs for him at a parade in sacramento on september 11th so about a week from now. a day appropriate to honor heroes. >> nice to see those stories, too. >> yes. absolutely. nice to see a weekend coming upon us, three day weekend for a lot of folks.

democratic tim snichl morning. beta soft advertises it has placed tech workers at google, wells fargo and ebay. vicki nguyen has been bigging into business practices. >> reporter: beta soft is a $20 million tech staffing firm based in fremont. two people spoke with us concerned about how the company trains and markets its job seekers. they say they paid $500 to $1,000 for training but near the end of a six-week course beta soft gave them resumes with years of job experience they didn't have in companies they've never worked at. they showed us their actual resumes, compared to the ones they say beta soft provided, and they told us they were instructed to lie about their experiences to potential employers. we found it isn't just beta soft, online reviews of other i.t. staffing companies had similar complaints. business experts say job seekers who aren't truthful can suffer

e-mail documents show the plan went to the top with ceos of huge companies like intel, apple, google matching plans to keep salaries low by discouraging recruitment. a class action of 64,000 employees took their case to federal court demanding $325 million. federal judge lucy koh rejected that as too low. wednesday she approved a new settlement $415 million. 64,000 people most in the bay area will be getting a check. a number of companies were involved in these allegations, some like adobe settled early. in court we saw disappointing e-mails between some of the leaders of those companies like one exchange between steve jobs and then google ceo eric schmidt in which jobs complains google is violating their agreement. schmidt says he will look into it. recruiter at google was terminated and jobs e-mails back a smiley face emoticon.

the jobs report says 173,000 jobs were added in the month of august, the unemployment rate drops to 5.1%. when we talk about a 5.1% unemployment rate we are talking about everybody. if you are talking just college grads you are talking about an unemployment rate of 12.7%. meet one of the guys who wants to get you to college, rick levin was the president of yale for 20 years, longest ten your of yale's presidency, he is now running an online college course. this sunday levin and i will sit down to talk not just about college on the internet but future of regular four-year college. look at colleges, parents balking at high costs, state governments cutting funding, the president of the united states pushing for free enrollment in community college. four year campus colleges are really getting disrupted by a lot of things. >> very much so. >> this was a natural outcome

given how expensive it is to go to college that there would be other ways of options. >> a push back, particularly yale. sunday morning after "meet the press." californians have a reason to get out of the bay area. gas prices for labor day weekend are the lowest that they have been since 2004. how about that. how do you like them apples? the reason for the road reprieve, low crude oil prices and a quiet hurricane season. san jose is the cheapest at $3.13 followed by oakland at $3.17 and drivers in san francisco are paying $3.30. laura says she can get you a deal better than that. >> $2.87. knots bad. it looks like a lot of people are already heading out of town. >> using some of that gas to get away. >> it's going to be a great weekend, especially for beach weather because it will be heating up. today it will be cool and choppy along the shore and inland areas will enjoy some very comfortable weather. as we take a look at that search

day forecast come on over and take a look it's coming up at the bottom of the screen, you can pick out where you live and then see what the temperature trend will be over the next few days. as you step out the door you may be running back inside in the north bay. santa rosa 46 degrees, 57 degrees in san francisco and highs today will be the upper 60s. the north bay expect a high of 81 degrees and in the east bay 77, tri-valley topping out at 80 degrees, 79 in the south bay and the peninsula topping out at 76 degrees. we do have a breezy on-shore flow and the wind will continue to pick up today, it will be gusty, especially at the beach. at noon we are at 22 mile an hour on shore winds in half-moon bay and then it gets even stronger, we may have gust over 35, 40 miles an hour along the coast, inland areas we're talking wind speeds up to 30 miles an hour sustained. once again those gusts may be quite higher.

all of that on shore breeze keeps our temperatures cool today and a lot of sunshine, but things will be changing this weekend. high pressure will be going in fighting back those winds and keeping our wind direction more northwesterly and our temperatures will be heating up. one spot you could have mild weather, sausalito, the arts festival happening there that weekend. temperatures nice and comfortable with highs topping out in the mid 70s. as we head into labor day it will be a little warmer, upper 70s to lower 80s. still no bad. the travel forecast for tomorrow all across the state will be of course much warmer in southern california, in san diego we're talking mid 70s, palm strings 100 degrees, up around reading 83 degrees. the beach forecast on sunday, that's where you will want to be because it will be getting hot out there. we will see temperatures in pacifica 71 degrees, water temperatures around 61. half-moon bay will be at 75

degrees, still breezy, winds out of the northwest 15 to 20 miles an hour and santa cruz the warm spot 83 degrees and winds from the northwest at 10 to 15. here is a look at that labor day weekend forecast all across the bay area. 80s tomorrow and then also some 9 09s starting to show up here in the tri-valley and north bay by monday, we're seeing more of those 90s, even some mid 90s in a few spots. i will have another look at the forecast coming up. let's see how the roads are looking with mike. you have a great forecast for that holiday weekend coming up. unfortunately i don't have a lot to follow w i think folks are liking that for traffic. we don't have the backup at the bay bridge because pre holiday friday. light volume no metering lights, no problems, no delays. look how light it is even for a friday, a little slowing south for 680 off of that dublin interchange. no problems for the northbound directions or across that san mateo bridge. there is a little build for that san mateo bridge. 92 the live camera shows

westbound a smooth drive to the peninsula no delay. north bay southbound 101 is steady slow of traffic through san rafael and across that golden gate bridge. we will see midday traffic and also on the weekend because the bart transbay tube closure will mean more traffic across that bay bridge. coming up, a bolt falls from the stadium roof hitting football fans. >> and a teacher in trouble for allegedly crashing this drone. >> the stands in the middle of the urs open. ==laura/ots== a teacher is

facing several charges this morning - after authorities say he crhe at 6:25. new details to tell but this morning. a teacher facing several charges after authorities say he crashed a drone into the stands right in the middle of a u.s. open match in new york. take a look at this photo. you can see the drone at the center of the screen on the steps. police say the teacher was operating the drone when it crashed last night into an empty section of seats inside louie armstrong stadium. the tennis match was delayed for several minutes. the suspect faces multiple charges including reckless endangerment. three football fans injured, two of them in the hospital after a bolt fell from the roof at lucas oil stadium in indianapolis. this happened last night as crews were opening the retractable roof for the second half of the colts bengals game. a man and women are in the hospital, they are expected to be okay.

medics treat add third person at the stadium. now the 49ers and levi stadium have ten days to gear up for the real thing. on september 14th they will host the minnesota vikings on monday night football. last night a dress rehearsal of sorts as the 49ers beat the sairnd chargers 14-12 in the final pre-season game. perhaps the biggest test not actually on the field but around that stadium. last chance for local law enforcement and transportation agencies to smooth out any traffic concerns they might have before that monday night game. >> we have our operations plan down and know what to expect with a full season already under our belts. so we are ready for the 2015 season. >> they may be ready, but some say they noticed a backup was a little worse than normal on highway 101 through santa clara, but for the most part things went smoothly. keep in mind this game was not a sell out. about 45,000 fans attended, close to 70,000 will be at that big season opener.

"today in the bay's" tracie potts live in washington, d.c. tracie, the clerk's husband also spoke out this morning. >> reporter: exactly. and he says that she's satisfied to stay there in jail but she doesn't want to compromise her principles that god's law is stream versus the law of this u.s. supreme court that has said same-sex marriage is legal in this country. but now those licenses are being issued in that county in

kentucky as of this morning. the deputy clerks in that office who were also threatened with jail time or fines have gonna head and signed off on those marriage licenses. the judge told her yesterday, told kim davis that if she would not interfere with that process he would let her out of jail and she sent back word from her attorney, no, i would rather stay in jail. so five of the six clerks agreed to do sorks the sixth is her son and apparently as of late yesterday he had not agreed to sign off on those licenses, but the other clerks are doing it. the bottom line, same-sex couples are now able to get married, but the fate of that clerk who blocked it still unclear. still behind bars. >> and the court cannot remove her, it would have to be the legislature. an evening walk ends in tragedy for a 19-year-old with autism. the teen was reportedly walking along lake temescal in oakland with his sister when he lost his

smoother ride they say when the project is done. but it will take some pain first. allow at least 30 minutes extra if you are riding bart, its transbay tube closes at midnight tonight, reopens at 4:00 a.m. on tuesday. in the east bay the 19th street stop in oakland is where you will want to get off take a bart coordinated bus across to the transbay terminal in san francisco. city side embarcadero station will be your last side, walk two blocks to the transbay bus terminal for a bus to the 19th street stop in oakland. there is a big concert billy joel at the at&t park saturday night. >> the special ferry service to the east bay is sold out so it's important to know if you don't already have a ticket you can rely on bart, the bus bridge works and it's going to drop you off at a transbay terminal, or you can hop on a muni business. the last bus home is 1:00 a.m.

fog as we take a live look from san bruno towards san francisco and the visibility is a little low in some spots from above, but down below it is all clear and cool. the north bay it is 46 degrees, san francisco 57 and 59 degrees now in the east bay. today will be another cool one. especially when you consider that this is the beginning of september. we should be have temperatures well above this. it will be 77 until the east bay, san francisco 68 degrees and the north bay 81 degrees. in the peninsula 76 and the south bay 79 degrees. this is what's happening. we have a strong on-shore flow, it starts out right around lunchtime, we feel the winds picking up, coming in from the northwest and look at what's happening along the coast, the winds at 25, maybe even 30 mile an hour winds sustained and even higher gusts. so it will be windy creating some choppy wave conditions along the coast and inland areas are feeling some breezy and cool conditions, too.

but as we go into the weekend it will be changing because high pressure will move in, high pressure caused the sinking air and clear skies and winds around that will fight back that on-shore flow and give us more of a northwesterly wind. one place we will have milder weather, sausalito the arts festival happening this weekend. we will have highs in the mid 70s, peaking at 80 degrees on sunday, by monday also feeling very nice there. traveling all across the state we will have temperatures hitting 100 degrees tomorrow in palm springs, los angeles 76 and reading 83 degrees. the sunday beach forecast once those temperatures heat up inland you may want to head to the cost, pacifica it will be in the lower 70s, winds out of the northwest at 15 to 20 miles an hour, half-moon bay 75 degrees, water temperature is warm, too. in santa cruz the water temperature will be at 65 while the air temperature heats up to 83 degrees. i will have another look at that forecast coming up.
