bridge. we're giving you a live look right now. christie smith joins us live at the bart station in san leandro. during the last closure the buses were working well with minimal delays. how is it going today? >> reporter: they seem to be working pretty well again, but you have a long holiday weekend and no transbay bart service and that is a real schal length when it comes to getting around, but riders seem to be taking notice. bart ridership down 40% today from a typical labor day holiday on ad@z saturday and the transb tube is bart's main link between the east bay and san francisco. also the west oakland station is closed, too, while crews work on worn out tracks. now, this is the second closure for its work. a bus bridge is running near the 19th street bart station in oakland taking ride towers san francisco. early today not too bad, took 20 to 30 minutes to get into the city. freeway message signs alerted drivers and riders well in advance that this was coming. now of course delays were expected on other bridges and

alternate routes. the advice was to stay close to home or use public transportation but other agencies did step in to help. >> never easy whenever we shut down the transbay tube. we looked at a lot of different weekends. the reason we chose this one is because historically ridership is pretty low over labor day weekend. ripping off the band-aid, wasn't going to be fun no matter which weekend we chose. >> reporter: the san francisco bay ferry is running more service than usual. the advice is for riders to come early and have a backup plan because it's hard to know exactly how crowded it might be. also muni has extra trains in place, buses and shuttles as well to accommodate. transbay tube will be reopened in time for the morning commute tuesday morning. reporting live in san leandro, christie smith, nbc bay area news. another big impact of this shutdown, thousands of billy joel fans will soon be heading to a concert at at chlt and t park, it doesn't help if the t third line will be down at fourth and king to upgrade

traffic signals there. there is a special ferry for concert goers but we're told it is sold out. you can keep track of all the traffic all weekend on our nbc bay area app and digital platforms, facebook and at which time juror we're following breaking news news now out of los angeles. authorities are investigating threats of an explosive device at los angeles international airport. according to fbi officials a caller revealed the device was planted inside a homeland security vehicle. the bomb squad set up a primt for investigate. evacuations are underway in the baggage area of several terminals right now. we will follow this story throughout the evening and keep you updated. if you are heading to the beach this weekend be careful. this is a warning out about high surf and strong rip currents for south and southwestern facing beaches in california. yesterday afternoon the wind was so strong it blew a kite surfer out of the ocean and right into traffic. that surfer was hit by a car and had to go to the hospital. wind gusts were up to 50 miles

an hour at the time. the winds today also strong. here is a look at the waves from just a few hours ago at ocean beach. you can see surfers taking advantage of those bigger than normal waves. meteorologist rod might at that joins us now. where are all these joint swells coming from? >> we are cyril a southerly swell, tropical systems off to south and west pushing the swell towards the coast. right now wind speeds of 21 to 28 mile per hour cusses out around point reyes goes down from the 50 miles per hour gusts. ocean beam looking good but you can see the survey long the shore. as our temperatures warm up a lot of folks tempted to head out to the coastline. be careful. rip currents, sneaker waves, larger sets coming in at times all the way through monday evening four our south and southwestern facing beaches. you can see some of those swell heights offshore, almost 8 to 10 feet a kroechs santa cruz. large swell offshore, temperatures today mid 80s

inland, get ready for some 90s showing up around our valleys and even 80s closer to san francisco. the latest on that warm up in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. south bay crews were busy battling flames in sunnyvale this afternoon. a brush fire charred about ten acres next to highway 237 near the senty veil park area. high winds didn't help the fire fight. smoke blew across 237 forcing firefighters to shut down the highway for a short time. the smoke also floated over to park goers at great america. crews knocked down the fire in about an hour. >> we have about 20 firefighters out here and they are right now they are just mopping up to make sure when heavier winds come up that it doesn't rekindle. >> the cause of the fire is under investigation. firefighters also battled a fire in downtown san jose earlier this morning. this is what's left behind this afternoon. heavy flames turned through the vacant two-story house just after 3:00 this morning. it happened on north 9th street near san jose state university.

a firefighter had to be taken to the hospital for minor injuries. now to new details from whole foods after a security guard allegedly beat a shopper unconscious in oakland on thursday. the security guard is now permanently off the job. an eyewitness posted these pictures on facebook after the incident. a spokeswoman for the grocery chain says the customer made physical contact with an employee before the guard intervened. the customer is hospitalized in stable condition. oakland police and whole foods are investigating. a company representative issued a new statement today saying, quote, we do have a zero tolerance policy for violence. as a result of the violent behavior of the security guard at whole foods market oakland we are replacing this security firm in the store. a disturbing child important bust in san francisco this week. it involves young victims from several states and overseas, some as young as a year old. yesterday the san francisco pd

and the fbi announced the arrest of cory nicole ellis, the san francisco woman is accused of distributing child pornography. ellis allegedly communicated online with underaged boys coaxing them to send her explicit photos. investigators say she led them to patrick harvey of novato who is accused of trading and viewing child porn. >> ellis used her powers of persuasion to convince the family of a uk couple to engage in sexual acts with their own children and record those acts and then distribute it to her. fortunately they raided the house in the u.k., they were able to separate the children from the parents. >> police say many of the images confiscated had children engaged in sex acts with adults. >> we are following a developing story now in kentucky. a prayer rally was held outside of a detention center today to

show support for county clerk kim davis. davis has been in jail for contempt of court since thursday after defying a judge's order to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. davis' lawyer said the fight is not over. nbc's dan scheneman has more. >> thank you, kim. >> reporter: outside the carter county detention center. >> kim davis has given all believers a lesson in faithfulness. >> reporter: charged with contempt of court. >> they're trying to take our religious freedom from us and we are want to go make a stand and show them they can't take our religious freedom from us. >> reporter: davis supporters applaud her decision. >> we are not here to be against the gays or, you know -- you know, we are just here for the truth. standing for the true word of god. >> god tells us to obey him rather than man. >> why are you not issuing marriage licenses today. >> reporter: lawyers for kim

davis an elected official who stepped into the spotlight when she defied the supreme court by refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples say they're working to get her out. >> we want to get her out of jail. she doesn't belong there. she is a prisoner of her religious freedom conscience. >> reporter: attorneys representing the couples turned away by davis say it's her choices keeping her behind bars. >> she chose not to comply with the law. for every other citizen in this country when you choose to break the law there are consequences and there are consequences for government officials. >> reporter: on friday and in her absence deputy clerks issued the first same-sex marriage licenses in the county. for now kim davis remains in jail in a legal battle with no clear end in sight. dan scheneman, nbc news. tragedy for touristes in las vegas today, two people are dead and four others injured after a suspected drunk driver crashed into a shuttle bus owned by grand canyon tours.

it happened earlier this morning near the downtown area of the city. the bmw hit the bus so hard it caused a three foot dent in the side of the bus. the two people who died were trapped inside that shuttle. right before the crash a friend of the bmw driver actually called 911 and told police that his friend had just left the bar and was drunk when he got into his car. the bmw driver is also in the hospital. one of the deadliest summers on bay area roadways. coming up, what is being done this weekend to try and reverse the trend. plus. >> the only way to really know what the cheapest is to shop all the travel sites. >> booking direct or through a travel site, where do you get the best deal? that story up next on reality check.

climbing the chp is out in force this labor day weekend. they will be doing dui check points and assisting drivers who need help. their maximum enforcement period runs to 11:59 p.m. on monday. during labor day weekend last year 27 people were killed in traffic collisions across california. three of those were in the bay area. during that same time the chp made more than 1100 dui arrests. more than 166 of those were right here in the bay. if you are heading out of town this holiday weekend one hotel chain says it is cheaper to book directly through them than third party sites, but is that claim true. sam brock has your reality check. >> reporter: the labor day holiday is here with many more holidays soon to follow and travelers are booking hotels and flights look to go stretch that dollar as far as possible. how can do you that? >> it's amazing what booking direct can get you. like when you book a hotel room

on marriott.com. you get the best rates right there. it pays to book direct. >> reporter: in ads like these one company, marriott, it pitching consumers on the idea that going straight to the source is flat out cheaper than third-party sites. the campaign is called #it pays to book direct. is that true? >> well, it sounds good on the surface but the reality is you don't know what you don't know. >> reporter: steve sher is president of the travel technology association, basically a trade group for travel sites. his point, that without options you can't possibly get the best deal. >> you need these apps, you need these platforms that incorporate all of the brands across all airlines, across all hotels, all car rentals so that you know what your choice right side before you can make your decision. >> reporter: sher maintains that with choice comes savings and value. many travelers also operate under this assumption. >> sometimes i will go directly to the website, other times i will go to an expedia, an orbitz or travelocity, it all depends

where i can get the best rate. >> reporter: we decided to test the theory starting on marriott.com since they are the ones that made the claim. we looked at three major cities, l.a., new york and chicago for a weekend trip one month out. we checked the exact same hotels in the same locations on cheap tickets and travelocity, let's use new york as an example. we looked at the jw marriott right on central park. it was a little less expensive per night on marriott.com. it was $476 versus $490 on travelocity and cheap tickets. but when you look at the total tab for the whole weekend which includes taxes and fees, it was the exact same price on all three sites. >> this principle held true for chicago and l.a., too. there was no discount for booking direct. the caveat, marriott's website states if you find a better rate elsewhere, they will match it and give you 25% off. meaning you may have to do some digging. true comparison shopping to make

it pay to book direct. i'm sam brock. that's this edition of reality check. take a look at this video, a blue whale tangled up in a net for two days now. today teams are once again off the southern california coast trying to rescue it. the creature first spotted by a whale watcher yesterday about five miles from san pedro. the whale 180 feet long and stuck in a fishing trap. the rescue mission had to be called off last night because of dangerous conditions in the water. the whale disappeared overnight but boats are back out on the water today searching for it. they are not just for kids anymore. san jose is hosting wizard world comic-con 2015 at the san jose convention center this holiday weekend. it is part of the largest pop culture during exhibition ever its kind in north america. it brings comics and collectibles together. it gives fans the chance to meet and greet actors, artists,

writers all related to the comic book world. it runs through tomorrow. let's turn to the forecast. meteorologist rob may da is here. >> right now you have temperatures in the 70s, cloud free there in san francisco, a little less wind than yesterday. right now belvedere, tiburon looking down to the south clear skies, 81 degrees, over towards oakland a little haze in the sky, but 77 currently there in oakland. dublin 85 degrees and into san jose also looking at sunshine around downtown. 81 degrees. these temperatures we're seeing right now probably the coolest weather we will see here for the next seven days as temperatures really begin to climb on out starting tomorrow, but even if you compare yesterday to today the 24-hour temperature change for most places around the bay area 5 t 10 degrees warmer than yesterday and what began to change today is the wind out of the northeast. look at the humidity levels out towards the hills and the east bay. fire danger unfortunately going higher as the temperatures start

to climb on up and humidity dropping down to 14 and 16% around livermore. temporarily for those hills around the north and east bay instead of the sea breeze we have the winds shifting direction coming in out of the northeast which has helped to clear out our skies. the storm track clearly way off to the north. the system which came through the west coast which helped crank up in the winds in the bay area that system is going to lift on off towards the northeast over the next couple of days. fall temperatures around for the next couple of mornings. early next week we will see high temperatures again making a run at the 9 09s, especially across the valley. tomorrow morning still kind of jacket weather with low 50s around napa for the morning. temperatures by noon tomorrow in the 70s to mid 80s. a little bit warmer for your sunday afternoon, in fact, we will see 80s and low 90s around the south bay and around san francisco 70s and 80s. temperatures climbing on up. redwood city upper 80s for tomorrow. to the north bay looking nice

but starting to see 90s around santa rosa. walnut creek seeing temperatures climbing on up. this warming trenld, watch these temperatures climb. san jose downtown, 90s there. across the board hottest days of the week coming up towards wednesday and thursday, just slight cooling heading towards friday. livermore average high is 86, way above that, mid 90s by the time we get into tuesday and wednesday slight cooling heading into next weekend and even san francisco close to 80 tomorrow and low 80s through the middle part of the week. summer certainly sticking around, a very summer like seven-day forecast all the way into next weekend. the temperatures climbing on up. in many cases they could be 5 to 10 degrees above average through the middle part of the week and through the next seven days. the 49ers roster is out, comcast sports net fallon smith is here with details on that and sports highlights taking us all the way to man lamplt hi, fallon. >> yes, you have to wait for sports, though torques find out what we're talking b i'm here in the studio, nfl teams had until

journey. i'm on the 53-man roster for the 49ers. the other notable moves. the 49ers have placed kendall hunter on injured reserve. he struggled to come back to full form after training camp after suffering a torn acl last summer. the biggest surprise san francisco has cut linebacker nick moody. he started the first two pre-season games and was expected to be a key member on special teams. college football is finally upon us and as always stanford enters the season with high hopes to kpeek for a pac-12 title. expectations to make the college football playoffs. so stumbling in week one was not in the cards for david shaw and the cardinals. number 21 stanford opening the season at northwestern. second quarter game tied at 3, clayton it thorson takes the quarterback keeper 42 yards to the house, nobody catches him. what's up with that, stanford? come on. northwestern up 10-3 in the
