it is cool, it is 55 degrees in the north bay and 60 degrees in san francisco and the peninsula. look for highs today in the 80s and 90s. very hot all across the board. in san francisco expect a high of 86 degrees, in the north bay up to 92. so we will take a look at all of the microclimates and what to expect as you head out to the beach. the beach forecast is coming up in just a few minutes. sam and kris. and now two breaking news a major bay area highway connector is closed because of an overnight crash and fire. right now the connector between southbound 880 to highway 238 is shut down and had t. will be a while before it reopens. yes t could be several hours, actually may not be until the afternoon before that connector is opened. there was an suv that struck power lines coming off of the ramp on 880 toward 238. again, this is going to create a traffic headache for lots of folks in san leandro and elsewhere in the east bay.

we are keeping a close eye on what develops here and will be checking in with stephanie chuang. investigators are going to be at a school? sausalito in the hopes of figuring out what started an overnight fire in an administration building. that fire starting around 7:30 last night at a school district building on the willow creek academy campus. no classrooms were damaged, but the fire spread from the basement of an administration building to the second floor and the at particular. it took firefighters about 45 minutes to put the fire out. investigators right now looking into whether that fire was set on purpose. and new this morning, a deadly shooting investigation is underway in antioch. police say if happened last night off car val low road, that's where police say they found a man who had been shot. he later died at the hospital. police are still looking for the gunman. this would be the city's third homicide of the year. a fun labor day weekend turns tragic off the coast of california. now a bay area family is in grieving this morning, their son

michael harris died after a serious boating crash near catalina island. another victim remains missing this morning. chuck coppola joining us with what happened here. >> reporter: 26-year-old michael harris, the son of former 49ers president and ceo peter harris was killed early sunday morning when two boats collided near catalina island. it happened about 1:30 a.m. investigators say two people were aboard the smaller boat that hit a smaller dinghy carrying harris and four others. >> it's horrific. stunning. and totally unbelievable. and devastating to the family. >> reporter: three people in the smaller boat were injured and there is a search for another of the boaters who is missing. michael harris lived in san francisco, he attended the university of san diego, santa clara university and had a master's degree in psychology. he was working at his former high school. the cause of the accident still

under investigation. back to you. thank you very much. happening right now, bart's transbay tube remains closed for repairs but the good news is that work is on schedule no. bart trains, though, are traveling across the bay this entire three-day weekend as crews fix worn out tracks there. instead riders are being bused across the bay bridge. here is a live look this morning looking kind of mellow for this labor day start, most people sleeping in or getting ready for those labor day barbecues, but over the weekend traffic was heavier than normal because of the bart shutdown. bart is reporting a 40% drop in ridership this weekend because of the construction. several other transit agencies are helping to pick up the slack. bart trains will be back on schedule tomorrow morning. you mentioned picking up the slack. the number of passengers taking the if i remembery has more than doubled thanks to that bart closure. saturday nearly 8,500 people homd on board to cross the bay by water. last year the ferry between oakland and san francisco saw 3,700 riders, the ferry route

also saw a slight rise in the number of passengers when compared to last year. you can keep track of traffic on our bay area map, you can also look on our digital platforms including facebook and twitter. thousands of people travel to local beaches on labor day weekend. today members of an ocean advocacy group are going to do the same thing but they are not there to celebrate or party. save our shores is going to be out on santa cruz beaches handing out trash bags to party years and pick nerers. last year they left behind 350 pounds of garbage on panther beach alone. they hope to put a cap on is that trash before the holiday is over. if you are going to the beach stood shave our shores asks to you bring extra bags to you can pick up after yourself when you are done snoof course you should. >> common courtesy. meteorologist kari hall is here. folks might be heading to the beach but there is some caution, right? >> right.

because we have had such a strong wind the past couple of days and that makes things very choppy along the shore. as you wake up and head out it's right around the upper 50s to lower 60s and the waves will be high. here is a look at the forecast for the wind speeds at 20 miles an hour. for the south and southwest facing beaches you will have higher rip currents today. we will be watching out for that. inland temperatures up to 99 degrees in gilroy, 94 degrees in nap parks 95 degrees in san ramone. we will talk more about those tours and if it cools off the next few days coming newspaper just a few minutes. back to that breaking news this morning, a major bay area connector is shut down following an overnight crash. we have "today in the bay" stephanie chuang there monitoring the latest for us this morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're here in san leandro, the southbound 880 connector on to 238 is shut down as well as the washington street off ramp and

that's because there was a crash just after midnight with a chevrolet silverado carrying six people two, adults and four kids. thankfully the crash into a pole here did not produce any serious injuries, just one child taken to the hospital for precautionary measures. i'm joined by christian with pg&e. right now your crews are here, you will be here for hours because that pole was taken down, actually the wires were hanging pretty low. >> that's correct. we got the call about 5:42 today, emergency call and myself and partner are first responders. we got in our vehicles, i heard my partner tell me that the line is low, they closed the freeway. i went to our yard close by and picked up a line truck to immediately grab the pole and raise it up and taking the public out of hazard. it was very low when i got out of here, the trucks were just skidding underneath the line.

los gatos 97, redwood city 90 degrees, embarcadero will be at 86 degrees, you can cool off at the outer sunset, it will be 70 degrees there, napa 94, pittsburg 97 and pleasanton topping out at 98 degrees. there will be some strong rip currents today. if you will be heading to the beach kind in mind that there will be some sneaker waves going on as well as some high breakers. today's forecast heading over to pacifica, temperatures will be in the upper 70s, wind coming from the north and then around 80 degrees as you head down to half-moon bay and santa cruz even warmer reaching 83 degrees on the boardwalk, the wind out of the north at 10 to 15 miles an hour. in los gatos the south bay outlook brings it into the upper 90s and near 100 degrees throughout the entire week. if you are looking ahead to the weekend thinking it will cool off, think again. we're going to keep this hot weather for a wieshlgs even into

sunday. we're talking 90s and triple digits across the bay. sam and kris. >> thank you very much. e-cigarettes are growing in popularity among teenagers, now research out this morning suggests that some teens are using those e-cigarettes to smoke marijuana right in front of their parents without anyone catching on. "today in the bay's" erika edwards has more. >> reporter: are these teenagers getting a hit of nicotine or secretly getting high? >> teens have actually discovered how to use e-cigarettes for vaping marijuana. >> reporter: researchers from yale university school of medicine had nearly 4,000 high school students in connecticut fill out an survey. neared a third tried e-cigarettes of those kids 18% said they vaped marijuana. >> the number went up even higher to around 27%. >> reporter: often they are smoking hash oil, a yellow resin

extracted from marge planlts. it tends to be more potent and there is little to no telltale scent, that means kids may be smoking pot around unsuspecting parents and teachers. >> their fear of getting caught has gone down and that's a big deal. once you remove that fear of getting punished they're going to experiment more and i'm not surprised one bit about it. >> reporter: what's more, there's some evidence marijuana may disrupt normal development of the growing teenage brain. erika edwards, nbc news. the city of san leandro is reportedly getting close to allowing its first and only marijuana dispensary. the bay area news group reports that the san leandro council members are weighing bids from more than a dozen different groups. apparently oakland's harbor side health center has the inside track. the city voted in 2012 to allow one dispensary.

a signature from governor brown is all that separates sonoma university's green music center from being allowed to sell more wine and alcohol at its venue. last week legislators approved a new bill t would allow alcohol sponsors to sell at performances that they underwrite boosting sponsorship money. foster care advocates say this is a critical week in sacramento as lawmakers plan to weigh new regulations about how doctors administer medications. critics say foster children receive far so many psychotropic drugs. lawmakers are debating a series of laws for guidelines. one report indicating that california's foster children receive mood altering drugs more than three times the rate of the national average. siblings and not mothers may be the most likely source of hooping cough infections among infants. a new study reveals most cases

down to monterey. the danger didn't stop families from enjoying the sand and water at capatola beach yesterday albeit very carefully. >> it's dangerous. you watch them and you're little nervous watching other kids so you kind of watch yours and watch theirs. >> the warning for strop rip currents, sneaker waves and large shore breaks continues throughout the day. >> a parent buddy system going on there. >> takes a village. the u.s. coast guard is looking into what caused a boat to explode off the coast of santa cruz. some cellphone video of a fire, two fish and wildlife workers were out on the water on saturday checking on several fishing boats when that explosion happened. a witness helped rescue the workers, they were taken to the hospital, but no word right now on their condition. big cat caught, one of the fastest animals on earth is back in his enclosure this morning after a brief escape at the

indianapolis zoo. this four-year-old name is bounce and yesterday he somehow cleared his exhibit wall triggering an hour long lock down. zoo visitors were told to seek shelter while staff tracked down and tranquilized the big cat. there is no telling how far the cheetah could have gotten and how fast. he was found lying in high grass near his enclosure. today the exhibit is off limits to the public so investigators can figure out exactly how that cheetah got out. it is back to work this week for its minnesota dentist who killed cecil the beloved lion. walter palmer spent more than a month out of sight after becoming the target of protests and threats, but in an interview last night with the "associated press" and minneapolis star strib union palmer says he plans to return to his dental practice tomorrow. he said he believes he acted legally and did not know that the lion was beloved in zimbabwe. high level officials there have called for palmer's extradition

"today in the bay" starts right now. a good monday morning. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. today let's go to meteorologist kari hall who has a look at your forecast because i have a sense that you might be going outside today. >> oh, yeah. a lot of people going outside, finding a place to cool off because it will be hot on this labor day. it is now 57 degrees on the south bay and the peninsula, north bay 54 degrees, temperatures continue to drop under clear skies, but then will be warming up quickly. 92 in the north bay and south bay, 88 in the peninsula and south bay. san francisco up 2086 degrees. more of those temperatures that will be very hot, sizzling and we go through the week. more on that in a few minutes. breaking news now. it's going to be several hours before a major bay area highway reopens this, following a messy crash overnight that could mean trouble for travelers returning from labor day trips.
