south bay, peninsula and the east bay 88 degrees and the tri-valley 97 while san francisco sees a high of 86 degrees. very hot all across the bay and it stays with us for a while. i will have a look at the rest of the microclimate forecast coming up in just a few minutes. breaking news now. a major bay area interchange shut down after a truck slammed into a power pole overnight. right now the connector from southbound 880 to highway 238 is closed because those power lines are hanging dangerously close to the roadway. "today in the bay" stephanie chuang is live in san leandro. this could be an issue for people traveling home in labor day. >> reporter: that's right. because this is actually a pretty big endeavor, kris. pg&e estimate tg could take another ten hours for the work. you can see crews are working to take away the old power pole and replace it with a new one after this truck crashed into it after midnight shutting down the southbound 880/238 connect err

and washington avenue off ramp. it could be until late afternoon. crews are working right now to try and get this all resolved. this is after a chevy pickup carrying two adults and four kids crashed into the poles. thankfully into serious injuries, one boy taken to the hospital for precautionary measures but the crash brought down the wires so low that pg&e said at one point trucks were passing inches from snagging them and potentially causing more problems for drivers here. >> they were very low. they were de-energized at the time but the problem is because the pole is no longer on the ground and stable if they would have caught the wires it would have brought everything down dropping two sets of wires, six weirs down on to the freeway. >> reporter: now, there is a small possibility they may close the stretch of 880 if the work gets too complicated. if not they expect to finish around 3:00 or 4:00 this afternoon. there was a small grass fire smarkd after the pole crashed but the sfooir were able to put that out very quickly and the

power is back to the roughly 8,800 people who lost it initially. again, just after midnight. as for the cause of the crash, chp saying drugs and alcohol not suspected so perhaps, you know, they lost control or fell asleep at the wheel. if you are traveling this way you are told to take a detour. for both 238 and washington avenue by taking luwelling. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." investigators meantime will be at a school in sausalito this morning in the hoping of figuring out what started an overnight fire that took place in an administration building. it started around 7:30 last night on the willow creek academy campus. no classrooms damaged but the fire spread from the basement of that administration building to the second floor and the at particular t took firefighters 45 minutes to put that fire out. right now they are looking into whether the fire was set on sur pos. this morning a search will resume for a person who disappeared into the water when a boat crashed into a dinghy

down in southern california. that crash killed this man, 26-year-old michael harris. his family says he lived in san francisco and graduated from the santa clara university. happened yesterday morning around 1:30 near catalina island. "today in the bay's" chuck coppola joins us. this young man was part of a well-known bay area family. >> reporter: especially well known if you are a bay area sports fan. michael harris is the son of former president and ceo of san francisco 49ers peter harris. the boating accident happened very near santa catalina island in the early morning darkness of 1:30 a.m. sunday. harris was killed and three others injured when the dinghy they were aboard collided with another larger boat. harris' uncle talked with us by phone. >> it's horrific, stunning and totally unbelievable. it is devastating to the family. >> reporter: they say it appears to have been an accident. an l.a. county sheriff's

department source says nothing suspicious has been found allow a bystander told reporters that boaters do hold parties late into the night near the casino point. search for another 26-year-old man from the accident was called off because the darkness. that search resumes shortly. kris and sam. >> thank you very much. new this morning, a deadly shooting investigation underway in antioch. police say that it happened last night off of cavallo road. that's where police say they found a man that had been shot. he later died at the hospital and police are looking for the gunman. that warnings that city's third homicide of the year. >> family members of an east bay woman killed last month are putting up a $20,000 reward to find her killer. atiara westbrook was shot after getting into her car on august 3rd. they are asking for any information that could lead to an arrest. her mother talked with us on the phone and says her daughter had a bright future. >> she was on her way to a

bright future in health ware r care, she was going to follow my footsteps and go to nursing school. she just was a good person, good hearted person that did not deserve this. >> officials say the suspect in the shooting was described by witnesses as a tall skinny man who was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. the gunman was seen entering a blue or silver sedan. new details now about a confrontation during san francisco's critical mass bike event is that raised a lot of eyebrows last month. now police say that this man caught on camera hit ago car with a bike lock, you see him raise his arm is being charged with several felonies. the suspect is 39 yeerlds ian hesbelt. officers on patrol spotted him yesterday and detained him for questioning in the august 28th con sfron tags between a driver and critical mass bike riders. investigators say hesbelt is in fact the man in that video with the bike lock. he is facing charges that include false imprison.

assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism and inciting a riot. happening now, bart's transbay tube remains closed for repairs but the good news is that work is on schedule. no bart trains are traveling across the bay this entire three-day weekend as crews fix contribution tracks there. riders are being bused across the bay bridge. you can see in the distance traffic moving smoothly at least for now, maybe a lot of folks sleeping in or getting ready for labor day barbecues. over the weekend traffic was heavier than normal because of the bart closure. bart is reporting a 40% drop in ridership this weekend because of the construction. several other transit agencies are helping to pick up the slack. bart trains will be back on schedule tomorrow morning. when the transbay tube reopens we will let you know by sending out a push alert. you can sign up for that on our app. the bart closure boosted business for bay area ferries. the number of passengers taking the ferry more than doubled.

saturday nearly 8,500 people hopped on board to cross the bay. last year the ferry between oakland and san francisco saw 3,700 riders. the route between vallejo and san francisco also saw a slight rise in the number of passengers when it was compared to last year. meteorologist kari hall has been talking about the forecast that is perfect for being outside if you are prepared for it. >> yes, because it will be hot today. you don't want to just head out the door and not have water or sunscreen. also with those hot temperatures we will have to deal with that for several days as we get a look at the headlines this is what you need to know as you head out. sunrise will be at 6:42. a cool morning and then heating up quickly. a very light wind that will be blowing offshore and with those highs topping out near 100 degrees it will be hot all across the bay. 90 degrees in palo alto, in redwood city 92 degrees in san jose and hayes valley today up to 84 degrees. 94 napa.

screens. it's a 36% increase from the sales cycle before that. apple also branching out outsides the bay area. apple is launching a massive expansion in the lone star state. the city of aus sin offering apple millions of dollars in tax breaks for a new campus that would be its largest anywhere outside silicon valley. apple is promising to create more than 3,500 new jobs and it would make apple the second largest tech employer in central texas behind dell computers. when you go to buy those new iphones you can use your credit card. this is supposed to be the best way to prevent credit card fraud. pretty soon all credit cards will come with an encoded chip and stores only have a little time left to get ready for the change. here is more from nbc's chris klacoen. >> reporter: pretty soon swipes will be out, inserts will be in.

the much anticipated chip and pin credit cards are about to become the norm at retailers nationwide. >> october 1st is the deadline when retailers are trying to have chip readers put in place. >> reporter: about 60% of all stores are said to already have the readers. while credit card companies have until the end of the year to get the new safer cards into the hands of consumers. >> we've seen dramatic drops in fraud in other markets as soon as chip cards are distributed to consumers by 70s, 80 or more percent. >> reporter: however, they are not truly chip and pin, just chip and signature for now. the credit card city argues it's asking too much to ask consumers to remember yet another four-digit pin, which the retail industry refutes. >> americans have been using pins for 30 years now, we use them at atm machines every day.

there's nothing difficult at all about using a pin. >> reporter: while the debate rages, though, the deadline is nearly here for the u.s. to do what 80 other countries have done, adopting chip and pin credit cards. kris klacoen, nbc news. a kayaker is recovering this morning from a shark attack off the southern california coast. dylan marks and a friend were kayaking, fishing for yellow fin tune extra in a in malibu saturday. they say he was dangling his feet in the water before a shark came up and bit his foot before it swam away. >> it was probably close to 10 feet and like 250 pounds. it was big. we saw this fin and then it dove, we didn't see it for like five minutes and all of a sudden he had his foot over the side and just got bit and then he put his foot up on the kayak and was like, dude, i just got bit. >> the pair flagged down a fishing boat for help. the ventura county air unit flew

mark to the hospital his condition is not being released this morning. two fish and wild liar workers recovering this morning after a boat explosion off the coast of santa cruz. you're looking at cellphone video of that fire. the workers were out there on the water saturday checking on several fishing boats when that explosion happened. a good smar stin was able to help rescue the workers who were taken to the hospital. the u.s. coast guard is look noog what caused the boat to explode. thousands of people travel to local beaches on labor day weekend but today members of an ocean advocacy group will join them, though not there for the party. save our shores will be out in santa cruz handing out crash bags to partiers and picnickers. last year labor day beachgoers left behind 350 pounds of garbage on panther beach alone. volunteers hope to put a cap on the trash before the holiday is over. they say if you are going to the beach today save our shores asks

to you bring extra bags so you can pick up after yourself, maybe hand one to a neighbor if they are not doing the same. >> party hard, clean up harder. first let's party again out there and see what the conditions are like. >> it will be a great day to head out the beach. we know when temperatures are really hot you want to find somewhere to cool off. the beach will be the place to be as we get a live look at this clear sunrise over san francisco, looking toward the bay bridge. it is nice. but take a look at those temperatures at the bottom of the screen. not so nice. it is going to be sizzling throughout the week, especially for the inland areas. right now it is 58 degrees in san francisco, the north bay 512 degrees and east bay at 55 degrees as the sunrises this morning. a cool start to the day and then highs in the upper 80s. in the peninsula and east bay, san francisco 86 degrees and the north bay up to 92, also 92 in the south bay. tri-valley get ready for a high of 9d 7 degrees.

and the really why, we have this large area of high pressure, it causes sinking air and is fighting back our on-shore flow. in fact, the winds are going to be very calm over the next couple of days and our temperatures will be 10 to 15 degrees above average for this time of year. so as you head out to the beach and cool off with those water temperatures in the 60s, it is going to be still windy along the coast. that will create some large waves, some rip currents, some sneaker waves as well and especially for those south and southwest facing beaches we may have higher rip currents there. the beach forecast as you head to pacifica it will be 77 degrees for the air temperature, water temperature 61 degrees, half-moon bay 80 degrees today and the winds from the northwest at 10 to 20 miles an hour. santa cruz at the boardwalk will be at 89 degrees, it may be right around 80 degrees right at the coast. in los gatos today a place where

we will see those highs in the upper 90s, even hitting 100 degrees, the average temperature is 84. so we stay well above average not only this week but into the weekend. on friday in the south bay expect a high of 103, 99 on saturday, sunday not any better and we also see that all across the bay. looks like this hot weather stays with us through at least into the middle of next week. so try to get used to this, i guess. as we go into the next several days. sam and kris. >> we're still holding on to that idea of summer. there it is, the heat still with us. two high school football players in texas suspended from the time while investigators try to figure out if the two ran into a referee on purpose. this happened on a friday night game. one of the players from onjay high ran into the rev from behind knocking him to the ground then moments later a second player falls on top of the rev. both players got ejected from the game right away. district officials say they are going to examine the video of

the play to figure out if the two hit the rev intentionally possibly for pay back on what they thought was a bad call. >> we are hearing from patriots quarterback tom brady. the reigning super bowl champion's four game suspension was overturned last week. the deflate-gate scandal began eight months ago. brady was allegedly involved in a conspiracy to deliberately underinflate football before the a sfchlt c championship game against the indianapolis colts. now he is thanking the people who stood behind him. >> everyone deals with thanks differently and i dealt with them the best a that i know how. i have so much support from family and friends and organization, mr. kraft has been unbelievable support for me and just like he would be for any player in this locker room. >> the nfl says it will appeal the judge's ruling in the case but for now brady will resume his duties as the starting quarterback for the patriots. >> with maybe just a little bit of tarnish on the golden boy.

is a critical week in sacramento - as lawmakers plan to weigh new regulations foster care advocates say this is a critical week in sacramento as lawmakers plan to weigh in on how doctors administer medications. critics say foster children receive too many antidepressants and other psychotropic drugs. lawmakers are debating a series of kinds to create first of its kind guidelines and regulations. one report indicating california's foster children receive mood altering drugs as more than three times the national average rate. the world may soon run out of the one of the most effective treatments for snake bites. doctors without borders are warning snok piles of ven nim will expire in june and the company behind that product stopped making it last year. doctors say this will risk the lives of people around the world. 5 million people are bitten by snakes every year. it turns out that siblings and not mothers actually the most likely source of hooping

across the coast temperatures will be heating up. a nice cool start to the day. fake a look at the north bay, it is 52 degrees with those clear skies and 58 degrees in san francisco. heading up to 86 degrees in the city, 88 degrees in the east bay and peninsula. north bay 92 degrees and also in the tri-valley in the 90s today. we will have more weather like this going through the week. i will show you that and more coming up in the microclimate forecast. breaking news now. a major bay area interchange shut down after a truck slammed into a power pole overnight. right now the connector from southbound 880 to highway 238 still closed because those lines are hanging dangerously close to the roadway. today in the bay stephanie chuang is live in san leandro this morning. this could be an issue for people traveling home this labor day. >> reporter: that's right. we are aer saying ten hours that's according to pg&e that this connector could be shut down to traffic until 4:00 this

afternoon. the truck crashed into the pole and the hop half is being held up by two pg&e trucks. to the left just how close these wires are to traffic, to 880 here and at one point pg&e says that trucks were passing by with just inches to spare. so the concern is those low hanging wires. pg&e crews are setting up another pole after this crash that happened after midnight. thankfully the people inside did not suffer serious injuries. one pie was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures. the crash brought those wires down. a spokesman said crews de-energized the wires but will have to work careful three to make sure they don't drop on to the traffic on 880 right now. >> it is pretty bad. it's a precarious situation at best. as i said, even as i grab it with the truck it's still very precarious. they're going to have to reposition the truck better, grab a truck and hold it straighter. there's a few things they will

son of a former 49er ceo so the whole organization feeling it. >> reporter: that's right. the incident does not appear to be suspicious that's according to l.a. county sheriffs investigators who say this appears to have been an accident. 26-year-old michael harris the son of former 49ers president and ceo peter hair ways was killed near sarnt catalina island. it happened roughly a quarter mile from shore. investigators say two people were aboard the boat that hit a small dinghy carrying harris and four others. >> he was a positive, upbeat, caring, kind, warm, loving friend, son, boyfriend, nephew. he was a great guy. >> we don't have any information to believe that either driver was under the influence. it's still under investigation. >> reporter: three people in the smaller boat were injured. there is a search for another of

the boaters who is missing. michael harris lived in san francisco, attended the university of san diego and santa clara university. harris also earned a master's degree in psychology and was working at his former high school. police in the south bay right now looking for the second suspect in a video game store robbery that led to a 20 hour long stand off. this robbery happened at the game stop on cochrane road in morgan hill, saturday morning is when it started. investigators say two armed men ordered all the customers to the back of the store and made off with customers' cell phones, wallets and several of the store's game consoles. one of the suspects didn't get too far. police tracked him to the berry court apartments where he apparently lived. he held police at bay for 20 hours, event using a crawl space to reach other units. >> we had this guy hiding out in our apartment complex, actually in my apartment. so that was kind of scary knowing that he was in there, in my kids' room and my bedroom and

it was very unsettling. >> the suspect did finally surrender late yesterday morning. police think that he was involved in at least five other south bay robberies. >> poor woman. one of the correctional deputies arrested for allegedly killing an inmate inside a sclrk main jail cell said he never fuchd that man. rafael rodriguez proclaimed his innocence during an interview with the mercury news. he is one of three correctional deputies arrested thursday and accused of murdering inmate michael tyree. rodriguez a admitted to being inside tyree's cell on the day of his death but said no one forced steyer ri to take his pills and no one laid a hand on him. he was found dead an hour after those three guards went into his cell. an autopsy showed tyree had been beaten. santa clara county sheriff laurie smith called the crime lane necessary and said evidence and interview caused them to arrest the three deputies.

ahmad brooks expected to rejoin the team today. that case stems from an incident last december at reporteder 49er ray mcdonald's house. he is facing fell my sexual assault charges from the same case. the team removed brooks from the most st roster when news of that charges came out. the nfl has decided brooks can remain active. the coach expects him to play monday against the minnesota vietings. bart's transbay tube remains closed for repairs but the good news is that the repair work is on schedule. no bart trains are traveling across the bay this three day weekend because crews are working on the tracks. instead riders are being bused across the bay bridge. looking live we see the traffic has picked up just a little bit, but maybe more people are sleeping in or getting ready for those labor day barbecues this afternoon. this weekend traffic was heavier than normal because of the bart closure. bart is reporting a 40% drop in ridership this weekend because

that heat offshore. even the beaches will be heating up. the wind is not that strong and then it does turn to an on-shore flow later on this evening allowing those temperatures to cool down once again but it is going to be hot out there. as you head out to the beach keep in mind you need to keep a close eye on the kids, we will have strong rip currents today and large choppy waves as the winds won't be that strong today with you still those warnings are out there. for the south and southwest facing beaches the waves maybe a little bit higher and we may still have those rip currents out there along with those sneaker waves. the beach forecast today in pacifica up to 77 degrees, water temperatures in the 60s, half-moon bay will be at 80 degrees, winds out of the north at 10 to 20 and in santa cruz up to 89 degrees today on the boardwalk. so pack some extra bottles of water and also in livermore our inland temperatures heating up to 100 degrees as we go through
