obviously, suspended from the school. we'll get more into that story in a little bit. we get to this morning's top story and no holiday for the political candidates. our new presidential poll numbers spell bad news for hillary clinton as she's losing ground in the democratic race and the general election. going to break down things with chuck todd in just a moment. but first, kristen welker is in davenport. good morning. >> natalie, good morning. labor day means the presidential candidates will be out in force and ramping up their campaigns for the fall season and that includes secretary hillary clinton. her campaign aides say they're not worried about the new poll numbers. they always expected a competitive primary. still, they are hoping for a new beginning in the fall. >> reporter: hillary clinton in iowa, looking to restart her campaign. >> if you work hard and do your part, you should be able to get ahead and stay ahead. >> reporter: clinton's raspy voice underscoring her nonstop

schedule as the latest polls show she might be in trouble. democratic rival bernie sanders is closing the gap in iowa, trailing clinton by just 11 points and things get worse in new hampshire where for the first time in our polls, sanders has overtaken clinton leading 49 to 38%. a key factor, on going questions about her e-mails. offer the weekend, clinton acknowledged she personally paid a state department staffer to manage her pry l. private server. and in an interswru nbc's andrea mitchell, she addressed the broader controversy. >> i am sorry that this has been confusing to people and has raised a lot of questions. i take responsibility and it wasn't the best choice. >> reporter: republican candidates keep piling on. >> for heaven's sakes, this was the secretary of state. she had a server in her basement. >> reporter: donald trump is still surging and when matched against clinton, trump comes out on top in iowa beating clinton by five points, although she holds a one point lead in new hampshire.
7:04 am
clinton is now taking aim at trump. >> mr. trump, i'd rather you stop cherishing women and start respecting women. >> reporter: trump firing back on twitter, our country needs a president with great leerdship skills and vision. not someone like hillary or obama, neither of which has a clue. and while clinton struggles against trump, vice president joe biden who is still mulling a run beats trump in a general lection matchup in iowa and new hampshire. biden will be marking this labor day in the battle ground state of pennsylvania while the political world awaits a final decision expected soon. willie, back to you. >> busy time in politics. summer comes to a close. thank you. chuck todd is moderator of meet the press and nbc's political director. let's get into this and start in new hampshire. two months ago hillary clinton had a ten point lead on bernie sanders there. in our latest nbc poll, she now trails by nine points. that's a 19 point swing over the
7:05 am
summer. what's going on here? >> well, look, i think the fact is that bernie sanders is connecting. a lot of times we sit here and focus on hillary clinton and there's no doubt that i think that she's come across a little bit scripted. the e-mail story has reignited doubts that maybe progressive democrats had eight years ago about her. they're back a little bit. throw it all together and you have a surging sanders candidacy tapping into a -- an excited progressive wing. thrown together with a clinton campaign that looks like they're tentative. that looks like the candidates sometimes look like she's struggling obviously to get out from under the e-mail storey. and here you go. now i know the campaign says well it's just iowa and new hampshire. these are very white states, they're not diverse. wait until the campaign moves on to the south. losing both of them would be disastrous. >> and chuk chuck nshgts backgrou --
7:06 am
and, chuck, we have vice president biden weigh wlg to get into the race. there is a debate coming up next month. when does he have to make his move here? >> well, what's interesting is those close to biden say the vice president is trying to find out what his drop dead deadline s what is the last filing deadline? and he has found out he could go all the way until november without missing a state, without missing a ballot. that said, he himself has been told end of the month is more realistic. if you want to do a competitive campaign and actually have a shot at winning, you better be in by october 1st. the problem, is he's not there yet. he's looking to buy more time which i think tells me i don't know if he has the fire in the belly to do what it takes to take on clinton to run. he may want to run, but is he willing to take on clinton to do it? >> chuck, as we look at your nbc poll on the other side, the republican party, donald trump is tied essentially with ben carson in iowa. he's winning by a wide margin in new hampshire. this was described as the summer of trump.
7:07 am
are we now looking at the fall and winter of trump as well? >> we could be. i think it is better to call it the summer of the outsiders. take trump and carson. combine the numbers together. it's over 50% in iowa. and you see the outsiders doing well in new hampshire. john case frikasich is doing we well. i think this has been a horrible month for the establishment candidates. a great month for outsiders. i think that's what we'll see throughout the fall. which one of the outsiders has at built to hang for a while? >> it will be a fascinating year ahead when you put all these things together. happy labor day. we'll see you. >> thanks, willie. labor day marks the end of summer but it looks like the hot weather isn't going to go anywhere this week, sadly. i don't know if you're hanging on. and there is severe weather to keep an eye on as well. good morning. >> good morning, natalie. sadly, i think a lot of us, me personally, are excited for the heat to hang on. not quite ready to say good-bye to summer yet.
