classes cut short due to high temperatures. >> let's start out with meteorologist cakari hall to fi out how hot it's going to get. >> a heat advisory that starts at 11:00 and continues to 7:00 this evening. temperatures range from 90s to 106 degrees. so heat-related illnesses will be possible. just take it easy and try to be careful to stay in the air conditioning. we do have temperatures in the mid-60s starting out. mostly clear skies. today in the day, a high of 100 degrees. 95 in the pnc east bay. tri-valley, 106, and in san francisco, 95 degrees. and in the north bay, 99 degrees. sizzling temperatures continue for the next few days. and starts to ease up a little bit this weekend. i'll detail all of that coming up in the micro climate forecast. let's check in with chris who is

following the school situation in the south bay. >> reporter: hi there, kari, this is something we might have liked to have back in school. heat advisory, 2 1/2 days of half day classes, that is today, tomorrow and maybe even on friday. for the football team, that means, well, they still have to hit the gridiron, though they're going to be practicing inside the combim becaugym because it be so hot. it's kind of funny that the crasses are being cut short because of the heat, but the they certainly are not going to complain about that. there are about 8,000 students here in the campbell unified school district. all of them have been having two half days, today, tomorrow and maybe on friday. but the advice for kids around the bay area is the same, sending your kids off to school, make sure they have lots of water to drink.

maybe ice those water bottles and they have plenty. and the school is air conditioned, that's why they've gone to the half day. but certainly where kids are going to school with heat. definitely a day to be cautious. you can track all of that with our nbc app. find the temperatures specific to your neighborhood at the palm of your hand. our app is free for androids and iphones. one thing you do not want to see. flames topped up last night in san jose. intersection of winchester and crews were shut down the two lanes for a short time as they doused the flames. fire investigators are calling the fires suspicious. b.a.r.t. trains are back up and running after a man was found dead underneath a train. it happened at the 12th street oakland street station.

how the man got on the tracks is still a mystery as police say they do not suspect foul play. today marks a somber date. eight people died in the fire in san bruno. >> and now how far that community has come since that tragedy which is still so fresh in our minds. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the mayor will give more details about what's transpired and mats ahead. it was five years ago to the day when a high-pressure gas line ruptured. and it was seams in. ge records. there are still neighborhoods here being rebuilt. in that time, the state fined them more than $1.9 million and resulted in a criminal indictment.

meantime, just monday night, pg&e filed a motion in federal court seeking to reduce all the charges. pg&e may face a fine of another $1.3 billion if convicted of all of these charges. a judge is expected to consider dismissal of both sets motions in a week and then a month. jury selection is expected for next march. the mayor is going to be joining us here live on "today in the bay" in the next hour. live here "today in the bay." it's one of those days where you just walk out your door and it just is, if it feels like this right now, what's it going to be later in the afternoon? >> our temperatures are were yesterday this time ten degrees cooler. it's 67 degrees in san jose.

67 in hayward. and santa rosa at 67 degrees. it's the spare the air day where you want to carpool or bike, where in north bay and south bay, the air quality levels will be unhealthy for those with breathing problems. it will be up to 100 in san jose. los gattos 90 degrees. and we've had had a slowdown at the bay bridge it happened five minutes ago, just cleared at the toll plaza. we'll look at the map. you see an easy drive as you would expect around the bay. 705 for the start of the game this evening. we'll watch for that.

big business, and a community in the east bay. the issue? a battle is brewing between big business and a community in the east bay. the issue at hand, toxic material. the proposed green cement plant is set to replace the old general mills processing factory across from new vallejo. a new report says that plant is going to generate 20 jobs. a lot of folks are skeptical about how many toxins come along with that plan. >> we have a problem with the environmental impact report. it has a lot of information and tells us a lot about this project. but what it doesn't do is tell us how much contaminants and what type of contaminants we can expect. >> environmental impact review has a revised map that shows increased cancer risks for this neighborhood. >> we reached out to the city's

community and economic development director, we haven't heard back yet. a community meeting, though, is set for october 7th. changes could be coming to your favorite toiletry, a state lawmaker is banning micro beads and personal care products. micro beads are commonly used in shampoo, soaps, toothpastes and have become a source of major pollution. they will explore naturals like apricot scrubs. making california one building at a time. that's the goal of a new bill headed to the state assembly later this week. the proposal would give property owners a 30% tax break on the cost of seismically retrofitting their homes. mayors in san francisco, oakland and berkeley all endorse that bill. supporters say it would encourage people to make their had homes safe in event of an

here comes the weekend. and it is a great way to start out the day, though. our temperatures, though, are milder as you head out the door compared to yesterday at this time. as we take a live look from san bruno mountain to san francisco. a clear start to the day once again. here's the seven-day forecast. coming up on the bottom of the screen, you can see the temperature trend for the next few days. and it stays hot for a while. here's a look at yesterday's highs. livermore, 104, concord, napa. hayward, 97. san jose was up to 96. 95 degrees in san francisco. oakland up to 95. mountainview at 97. that's where we set some new records. and once again, now, it's in the 60s for most of us, as you step out. so, no need for a jacket, not this morning. 100 degrees will be the high in san jose. palo alto, 94 degrees. we're still seeing the 90s in san francisco. kyle, 103, brentwood, 105.

you get the picture here. just another hot day. and we do have the offshore winds blowing now and that keeps it hot with inland temperatures staying near 100 to 105 degrees through friday. there may be something changing in the forecast this weekend. we're watching tropical moisture that may be streaming in. that will increase cloud cover and humidity. the temperature is coming down just a few more degrees, but it will be humid. and our temperatures come down not to normal. it will still be warmer than average. here's the outlook for livermore, 106 degrees. and by the way, it will still be in the 90s. 90s widespread across the bay area and san francisco comes back down to the mid-70s. i'll have another look for the microcast forecast coming up. >> and 580 ahead, it's clearing, but we still have the cones and

numbers posting the second best day of numbers. it's mostly job openings and a measure of the health market, the dow 394 points. the nasdaq up 128. and general motors is delaying the nationwide launch of the next generation chevy volt. in california and some in the northeast. this comes as slowdowns and demand for the vehicle as gas prices drop. the national average is $2.39 a gallon. and amazon may be setting its sights on grubhub. in seattle, for orders for $7.99 or two hours for free. menus and food orders beia the app. you'll get your food in an hour or less. delivery is free for now. and amazon may expand the service to other cities.

know how to develop machines to develop what we want before we want it. maintaining what has been 30% iphone sales growth in each of the last quarters and statically not possible. so the technology giant has to do something different now. >> i think they need to find reasons for people to want a new iphone. and also get people excited in categories like apple tv or launch an ipad. so if you don't want one product, you're going to want one of other other products. >> reporter: the auditorium will seat 7,000, much larger than the auditorium that apple usually uses for these announcements. >> that was jennifer bjorklund reporting. at 4:50, a major california ruling surrounding networking posts pretrial evidence in cases. this ruling involves two defendants involved in a deadedly drive-by shooting that killed a suspected gang member

back in 2014. defense attorneys asked for access to facebook and twitter posts ahead of that trial and they were denied. a judge in san francisco ruled that twitter and facebook do not have to turn over their data despite a subpoena from the defendants. the judge's ruling only pertains to pretrial motions. the defendants can make the same request when the case actually goes to trial. international beer company comes in. >> heineken makes the local beer maker to get access to heineken's local production. partnering with heineken is not going to do anything to the taste of their beer. heineken is the third largest beer maker in the world. coming up, partying like rock stars. or super bowl winners. they kick off the nfl season.

a nursery there. there's a crash off the roadway and it's got two lanes blocked there. and just go north. i'll try to get a camera on it, but it's a tough angle over there. meanwhile, we do have a crash there with a car involved mostly off the road. we'll track it. back to you. they're called fast lanes, but bay area lanes not moving quite so fast it's because they're already packed with slower drivers. a report surveyed 500 miles of diamond lane and found an alarming trend, up to 41% of solo drivers are risking hefty times to shave time off their commutes. handing out 22,000 carpool violations this year, that is up 3,000 from a year ago. amazing testament to just how bad traffic is here, speaking of which a follow-up now to a story we first brought

you yesterday morning. in a city that always seems to be under construction. one leader is asking for more. supervisor scott winer introduced legislation that the system needs more stops or possibly eye another tube on the gridlock that will only get worse. >> central subway is on track to be done in a few years and it will immediately be the highest ridership line of any of the light rail vehicle lines. we need to make sure that the central subway is extended north to the fisherman's wharf. >> many leaders agree with the supervisor hoping that the expansion will keep everyone moving. the big question is of course, what's the bill going to be. a question they have to explore. and on the unfinished wall

on the huge hospital expansion project, nbc bay has learned that they've sent a default notice to turner construction. that means the construction company will likely be fired from the hospital project. this group also halted work on the underground built by turner. officials tell us construction at the site is years behind schedule. the county is expected to make an announcement on it later in the week. arriving in san francisco, a star-studded kickoff party for tomorrow. it's happening where a super bowl banner is draped across the ferry building. the kickoff is with a news conference and tomorrow's party is legitimately supersized with the san francisco rock band train performing and ellie goulding.
