"today in the bay" starts now. a very good wednesday morning. thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. it's going to be hot. >> some south bay schools are letting kids go home early before the temperatures skyrock skyrocket. >> now meteorologist car arkari? >> yeah, it's going to be anotherrc a day. temperatures heating up quickly and that's when we have the heat advisory in effect from 11:00 this morning until 7:00 this evening where temperatures could get as high as 106 degrees. we're right now in the low 50s in the north bay. nation and cool there. the peninsula at 67 degrees. a look at the micro climates.

100 in the south bay. 99 in the north bay. east bay, 97. 104 in the tri-valley, and the peninsula, 96 degrees. now, we check with chris to talk about what's happening with the school system. >> we'll take it from here. kris sanchez is closely following what kari has been talking about. >> it's a rare thing. you heard of snow days but what about hot heat days? let's check in with kris. >> reporter: back in my day, we walked to school uphill both directions in the middle -- no, i'm just kidding but the kids are not going to be staying the whole day in the classroom. you can seat marquees here. minimum day schedule. heat advisory both today and tomorrow because. heat. and that means the students here are going to go home at 11:30 this afternoon, instead of staying the whole day in class. that includes not just prospect

high school but all schools in the campbells district. one of the superintendents told us that because more than half of the classrooms in the district have no air conditioning, there's just really no way to keep all of the kids in school with the kids. >> i think it's ridiculous, but that's okay. >> i'm out of school early. >> reporter: and the football team is preparing for their season opener this friday against half moon bay. they're not cutting practice short. but the coaches are moving into the gym to get the players out of the blazing sun. so no matter where your kids go to school, they may not have a minimum day but they are under the heat advisory for the advice same for them as you here in the campbell school district, make sure they have enough water to hydrate. make sure they drink that water

crews were forced to shut down all of southbound lanes 280 for a short time as they doused those flames. all lanes back open this morning. investigators are calling the fires suspicious. it was a pretty wild scene in las vegas, not on the strip but on the tarmac. passengers were scrambling for safety as their british airways flight caught fire. this morning we're getting new information. the british airways jet was taxiing at mccarron international airport yesterday afternoon about to take off for lond london. but the boeing 777 never got airborne. the left engine caught fire. the slide deployed to get all of the passengers and crew members out. >> there was a very young lady not too far from us, taking her baby off the flight quickly. pretty much everyone was trying to help her do that. >> 14 passengers suffered minor injuries. the faa and boeing are investigating. it has been exactly five

years since the pg&e gas explosion killed eight people, leveled an entire neighborhood in san bruno. >> certainly a lot can change since stephanie chuang is live there. >> reporter: the mayor will be here. there's plenty to discuss especially as pg&e made a new move this week to get criminal charges dismissed. as to what happened five years ago to the day, many people still remember what happened here. a huge fireball, explosion after a high-pressure pg &est gas line ruptured killing eight people, injuring 66 others and destroying 38 homes. they will host a remembrance at 6:00 p.m. it did result in a criminal indictment. meantime, federal prosecutors are also working to fine pg&e up

to another $1.3 billion. the utility is facing 28 criminal charges and just monday night filed five motions in federal court in san francisco seeking dismissal of all of those charges that accused the utility of safety violations and obstruction of justice. the judge is likely to consider two sets of motions first in two weeks and then again in a month. the jury trial for the criminal charges are scheduled to start march 8th of next year. a lot happening. the mayor and city leaders are set to be here this morning to talk about what's happening and improvements. live in san bruno, stephanie chuang "today in the bay." to a follow-up to a story we first brought you yesterday morning, in a city that always seems to be under construction, one leader is asking for more. he wants to see a major transportation upgrade. supervisor scott wienor asking city leaders to develop a master

plan by next year. and he says that the system needs more stops, possibly even another tube, but the gridlock is only going to get worse. >> the central subway is on track to be done in a few years and it will immediately be the highest ridership line of all the light rail lines. we need to make sure that the subway is extended north to north fisherman's wharf. >> many rider as agree with the supervisor hoping that an expansion is going to help to keep everyone moving. the question is how much will it cost? new this morning, the skies in the south bay are clear during this week's heat wave even though people in san jose are going to be some fog. crews will be spraying after mosquitos so that sort of fog. in areas tested positive for the west nile virus. fogging starts around 11:00 tomorrow night and finishes up around 2:00 friday morning. the area being treated is

commodore avenue and between north white road and north road. and we want to check by kari with the temperatures, are we going to see a dip anytime soon? >> it will take some time. at least for the next few days, as you head out, a clear, cool morning. a little milder than yesterday. and temperatures shooting up very quickly. most cities from 95 to 106 degrees. mostly clear skies tonight. sunset at 7:29. here's a look at the micro climates. 90s and 100 degrees, all why spread across the board. and in temperature from the coast to the inland valley, it's going to be sizzling all across the bay. let's get a look at the morning commute with mike. looking over towards sonora, with my friend ben with the camera, across the roadway southbound 680.

it fuchsia, sam. you're killing me here. at the billy graham sink auditorium, this is a 7,000-seat venue, much larger than the venue that apple normally holds this event. it's just worth noting. as far as what they will be revealing, we will have to go with the best guesses. those who cover apple believe it will be a 6s or 6-pluss. and also a 12 megapixel camera that can shoot 4k video and faster processor. apple tv could see improvement with the possibly of siri being integrated into the box allowing users to talk to their television. >> it's kind of a wildcard, and that's an ipad pro. a big screen ipad meant for business users.

weather service issued heat advisory, it's in the forefront of your mind that the high heat could cause heat-related illnesses. you'll want to pay attention to your body, if you have breathing problems such as asthma, you want to limit time outdoors. air quality levels will be approaching and healthy. and it will likely continue throughout the week. livermore, hour by hour, 6:00, 66 degrees. 71, you see the temperatures jumping hour by hour. 102 degrees at 2:00. we stay at 102 for several hours and dropping back to mostly clear skies tonight. if you're heading to the beach, it will even be warm in the coastaler. pacifica, 89 degrees. half moon bay, 89. santa cruz, 95 degrees on the board walk. winds coming from the southeast at 5 to 15 miles an hour. and we're watching for something that may change the weather as we head towards the end of the

they blind sided him at the beginning of the play. the students said the players also directed racial slurs at them. they have been suspended for now. and the school said they're treating that as an assault on a school official. in san francisco, a star-studded kickoff party at justin herman plaza where a super bowl banner is already draped across the ferry building. kickoff begins with a news conference but tomorrow's party is definitely legitimately super bowl size with the rock band train forming along with ellie goulding. it's also free. all seen during the season opener between the new england patriots and the steelers here on nbc bay area tomorrow night. one of three americans who took down a gunman on a train in europe will speak out on "today" show this morning.

so cool there, 57 degrees in the peninsula. highs today after all of that sunshine, topping out at 106 degrees. east bay, 107, and the tri-valley, 106 and the north bay up to 99 degrees. more of this weather as we go through the rest of the week. i'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. back to you, sam and laura. the high temperatures are forcing a south bay school to make a rare move. eight schools are going to let kids out early. >> kris sanchez is live. this is not just today, but tomorrow as well? >> reporter: yeah, two half days today and tomorrow before your kids tell you their school is hot, too. most of their classrooms don't have air conditioning. as students head to school today, they'll see that heat advisory flashing on the marquee. they will get out of class at 11:30 both today and tomorrow. and maybe even friday.

volleyball and tennis are still on for tomorrow but we'll have to wait and see. the district may make changes noor. in saratoga, kris sanchez. >> for the second day in a row, alum rock park closed to the public. san jose allowed limited use over labor day, it closed yesterday citing extreme fire danger. kris, of course, talking about those temperatures. no word on when the parks will reopen. the hot weather as well in the last month crews at the monterey county spca have rescued more than 100 birds all starving and dehydrated. rescuers are not able to pinpoint the dieoff, but they say high temperatures may be the blame. if you see a sick or stranded bird don't try to rescue it, call the local spca. throughout the day, you can track the heat on the nbc bay app in your neighborhood at the palm of your hand.

hours before finding van leer. three south bay correctional deputies accused of killing an inmate are accused of assault on another one, jereh lubrin, matthew farris and rafael rodriguez. they say they punched a man and then attacked michael tyree who is mentally ill. tyree was found beaten to death in this jail cell. >> those who were supposed to protect michael tyree did not. instead, they killed him. >> correctional deputies did not enter a plea to the murder charges yesterday. if convicted, they face life in prison. well, a hearing later today in the racketeering case against a former chinatown gangster and seven co-defendants. the defense attorney said it's going to be anything but

ordinary. the men are accused of running a crime organization with links to the former state senator leyland yi. one defense attorney in the case tells us that he expects lots of emotion in the courtroom when ciao's co-defendants likely to have their cases heard separately. leave the drones at home, footballs will be flying around levi's stadium but not drones. they set a no fly zone covering half a mile around the stadium. officials say it's a safety issue. within the past week alone, a drone crash landed inside the stadium during a game. and another crashed in the louis armstrong stadium during the u.s. open. >> it's almost too easy to get your hand on this technology, in the sense that you can do some real damage. >> not just sporting events. a bill on its way to the

california state senate could make flying a drone less than 350 above private property without consent a trespassing violation. >> and that's something else that could lead to local legislation here. a plan to turn part of it into a tourist area, reportedly has some there steamed. to turn an area called mason's marina into a visitor center and boating spot. critics say it's far too small to handle that kind of potential crowd and unwanted development. a battle is brewing between business business and community in the east bay. the issue is toxic materials. if proposed green kept plant. the plant will generate 20 jobs and green high performance concrete. a lot of people are skeptical

about how many toxins it will bring with it. >> we have a problem with the environmental impact report. it has a lot of information and tells us a lot about this project. but what it doesn't do is tell us how much contaminants and what type of contaminants we can expect. >> environmental impact review has a revised map that showed increased cancer risks for this neighborhood. >> we reached out to the city's community and economic development director and not heard back. the meeting is set for october 7th. changes could be coming to your favorite toiletries. state lawmakers approved a measure to ban plastic micro beads in products. micro beads are commonly used in shampoos, soaps, toothpastes and they've become a major source of pollution. the bill still has to be signed by governor brown, it would exclude natural ex fellex fello

next week coming up. let's see how the commute is moving with mike. >> well, kari, we've had high temperatures for least for the car fire on the san mateo bridge. i do take a look at the foster city side from the opposite direction, we'll show you that camera as well. eastbound, there's the second set of flashing lights that i see heading across midspan. still reports of a slowdown. and the traffic slowdown and moving across that spans. meanwhile, the bay bridge has the backup light on. you know this, mike, they're called fast lines but bay area lanes not moving so quickly. it's because they're packed with a lot of solo drivers. 500 miles of diamond lanes surveyed and they found an alarming trend. up to 41% of solo drivers are risking hefty fines to shave off

shoot 4k video. and one that we talked to thought the pressure was on for apple to maintain the stellar iphone sales without something breathtakingly new. >> i think they need to find reasons for people to want the new iphone. and also people excited to get apple tv or the ipad, they kind of have something for everybody. if you don't want one product, you're going to want one of their other products. >> reporter: and here outside the bill graham civic auditorium in san francisco, the billing says special event, set for 10:00 this morning. if you're not aware, the auditorium holds about 7,000 people. that's about seven times, ten times as much as the yard where apple normally holds this product announcement. this is morning nois worth noti. we're not suggesting there's anything to read into it.

>> cooler? >> sweltering, sizzling, hot. it is going to be hot today and nice and a mild start as we take a live look from san bruno. clear skies and we're starting out with some comfortable weather, the least for now. but let's take look a look back at yesterday's high temperatures, 104 degrees in livermore and concord and napa, 100. and as hot as it was most of these spots do not set new records. the record in san francisco, believe it or not, 101 degrees, we got up to 95. but we did set a new record in oakland and mountainview with highs in the upper 90s. 52 degrees in san francisco. 65, we do have more of a northerly wind today but it's not really that strong. and when we have an onshore flow that helps our temperatures

cooloff, it isn't until later this evening when the on shore wind picked up and it will be 10 to 15 miles an hour. our winds are mostly offshore. and we stay at 105 degrees until friday. but this weekend, there will be more clouds moving in from the remnants of what will be a weakening hurricane linda. and that could mean an increase in humidity. even though the temperatures only come down a few degrees it will still be uncomfortable. 106 today, 103 friday. then as we come down into the 90s, still well above average. once again, the humidity will be up and that will make it feel not that much more comfortable as we go through the weekend. so the heat continues for the next several days. >> kari, we obviously has a backup at the bay bridge.

she's not going back to the kentucky county clerk jailed for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses is out of jail but she's not going back to work just yet. a spokesperson says she'll use a couple days to rest but she's expected to return to work either friday or monday. a judge set her free yesterday after her deputy started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. davis is going to continue the fight she started. >> keep on because he is here. >> when asked if she's going to comply and give marriage licenses to all, her lawyer answered davis cannot and will not violate her conscience. >> meantime, the u.s. vowing to help with the syrian crisis. secretary of state john kerry is going to meet to discuss how many refugees the u.s. is going
