it's thursday, september 10th, coming up on "early today," breaking news overnight, massive floods are causing thousands to be evacuated in japan. revealed for the first time -- the booby-trapped nightmare of bombs and explosives that filled movie theater shooter james holmes' apartment. and donald trump launch as full-scale of attacks of insults. >> we have stupid people and incompetent people run our operation. then funding for planned parenthood comes under fire. is america ready to take in 5,000 migrants and refugees. and it's football night in america as the nfl season begins right here on nbc. pacific. in japan, unprecedented rain broke a levee 36 miles north of tokyo. an opening 90 yards long that sent water to envelope a residential neighborhood. people are desperately waving from rooftops, hoping to be spotted by helicopters overhead. the tropical storm is ripping through the country, dropping 20 inches of rain in 72 hours. 100,000 people have been forced to evacuate. one official called this an urgent situation. and grave danger may still be approaching. meanwhile, eastern sicily is dealing with its own torrential rain, flooding turned a main street there into a fast-running river stranding people in their homes and shops. forcing people to abandon cars and seek shelter. revealed for the first time, a horrifying new look inside the apartment of a mass murderer. and it was rigged to blow. now that the trial for convicted aurora, colorado theater shooter

james holmes is over, an erie view of what was inside his apartment. 16 bombs, four incendiary devices. along with smokeless powder, bullets and napalm. according to court testimony, the place was wired to kill through a massive explosion and fire, these pictures were captured by a robot. during the trial, holmes laid out his sickening plan to preoccupy first responders, and it included leaving prerecorded music playing loudly in his apartment. the goal was to bait someone into entering his home. one of the neighbors testified that she approached his front door, said she knocked and had her hand on the doorknob, but decided to call the police instead. right now, the showdown over the iran nuclear deal is dominating 2016 campaign trail. gop presidential candidates donald trump and ted cruz along with sarah palin came together at the capitol for a rally against the nuclear agreement. trump didn't go into details

about why he thinks the deal is so bad. but he did make some big promises. >> we are led by very, very stupid people. very, very stupid people. it will change. we will have so much winning if i get elected, that you may get bored with winning. >> at the same time, arizona senator john mccain gave a blistering critique of the iran deal on the senate floor. but also on the floor, was democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders. he detailed his support for the nuclear agreement. fellow candidate hillary clinton also came out in support of the deal yesterday. she also had a very clear message for iran's leaders. >> as president i will take whatever actions are necessary to protect the united states and our allies. i will not hesitate to take military action if iran attempts to obtain a nuclear weapon.

>> right now, president obama has 42 senators supporting the iran nuclear deal. that's enough to block any measure of disapproval. as the world copes with the escalating refugee crisis overseas, u.s. officials are at odds over what the united states can and should do to help. this video out of hungary has captured the world's attention this morning, a camera woman was filmed actually kicking refugees running past her. she was also seen deliberately tripping a man carrying a small child, he falls to the child, angry but unhurt. the camera woman worked for a far right-wing television station and was fired on the spot. nbc's tracie potts is live in washington. how is the white house responding to the refugee crisis? >> well they're trying to figure it out right now. how many refugees might the u.s. be able to take in. how soon? how will they get here? those are details that the administration is discussing right now. but it's clear this is a hu

humanitarian crisis, and it may be about to hit our border. >> they're fleeing syria in droves, four million so far and another seven million displaced inside that country. europe can't handle them all. >> how can president obama say it is our moral obligation to do what we can to prevent the worst atrocities in our world, but refuses to do anything. >> lawmakers aren't sure what to do. >> what our role is in trying to help resolve it, frankly is unclear to me at this moment. >> the obama administration is looking at bringing some refugees here. >> we are committed to increasing the number of refugees that we take. and we are looking hard at the number that we can specifically manage. >> but there are security concerns. >> we don't obviously put it past the likes of isil to infiltrate operatives among these refugees. >> but the real solution may be
