bob, you are hearing a car might have been the cause? >> reporter: either a car or minivan, that's something the contra costa fire department is looking into. you will get bet get a better understanding as to why it took firefighters 70 minutes to put out these house fires that hurt seven people, fortunately all of them expected to survive. why it cause add a lot of destruction and damage in anchor point. damaged two more, burned up the two cars as i mentioned that were parked in driver waist. the fire started at a house and then spread to houses on the left and right side of it, the wind also carried embers to a fourth house across the street. a fire chief tells us when they arrived the two initial homes were already fully involved, they had immediately to go on to the defensive. also had to be careful because a power pole was on fire t took pg&e around 45 minutes to dee energize that line. a young man was inside one of

the homes when the fire started, he described to his aunt what happened. >> he said he heard a loud explosion, that's what woke him up and he opened the door to his room and just a bunch of smoke came at him and he saw the fire, closed the door and put -- kicked down the ac, jumped through the window and got out and that's when he called her. >> reporter: is he okay? >> yeah, he's fine. they checked him out. >> thank god that he is okay. >> reporter: that was the young man's mother who was at work at the time. you can see this is the video of the aftermath. you will notice the minivan, you will notice the could you please both of them burned up in the driveways. the fire investigators are focusing on those vehicles to see if one of them might have been the initial source of this fire. seven people hurt, three treated on the scene, the other four taken to the hospital, they all had smoke inhalation except for one who also had minor burns.

none of these injuries are life-threatening. reporting live in bay point, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. more breaking news this time in the south bay. one home burned in a brush fire off bear canyon road in the los gatos hills. that fire started after 12:30 this morning. the fire small, only an acre in size but crews are working on full containment. no word on injuries there. we will check back on both of these breaking news stories throughout the rs morning. when we are not on air you can get the latest information on the digital platforms. these fires a difficult sight to see and the heat is not helping out as we are expecting another day of triple digits. >> meteorologist kari hall joins us with a look at that microclimate forecast. >> good morning. yes, another hot day, but at least we are starting to see a few changes as we get a look at what's happening all across the bay area this morning. it is 57 degrees in the north bay and san francisco, it is 66 degrees in the peninsula and the south bay 67 degrees. mostly clear skies, but some fog

near the coast and a high today of 96 degrees can be expect in the south bay. so still sizzling in the north bay, 100 degrees, east bay 94 and the tri-valley 105. yesterday we had some 90s in san francisco, how about 84 degrees today? our temperatures are heading in the right direction. we will take a look at that weekend forecast in a few minutes. let's get a look at some problems on the roads with mike. first a warning so we don't have problems, carl the fog returning to the bay area after the labor day weekend off, we are looking at an easy drive perhaps some visibility issues at the span. south of there that's where the big issue is coming into san francisco, it's not the bay bridge, the metering lights are on, typical backup, it's northbound 101 jamming up, a crash before it reaches 28 0rks we have two right lanes blocked possibly past 6:306:45 before they open up those lanes. 280 is a good alternate to get

into san francisco. 880 starts a bit of a build so does the tri-valley. and there is a fire up in the hills around milpitas and san jose. we have a crew heading out there but they reported seeing it from montague expressway, it might be a distraction. we'll track this. back to you guys. 6:04. a developing story and some dramatic rescues unfolding in japan north of tokyo. that's where heavy rains from a tropical storm triggered massive flooding. at least one person is missing. 90,000 people were evacuated when heavy rain broke liver levees, flooding and mudslides have completely washed away homes. look at the rescues going on there. in some areas two feet of rain has fallen since monday. so problem here, something that could have been very tragic, investigators now saying an electrical issue is what's to blame for a fire that burned a limo on a south bay freeway. that fire started as the limo was traveling on 880 near the

steechbts creek exit in san jose. right next to valley fair mall. that hummer was care members of the band red dragon cartel. the brand is in town for a show tonight and everyone mate made it out okay. images brought back this horrific site on the san mateo bridge back in 2013. a limo cross that go bridge caught fire killing five women trapped inside. that led to safety changes for limo companies in california. in southern california no students were hurt when this school bus went up in flames along interstate 5 in irvine. that cellphone video caught by another driver shows the flames shooting through the bus windows sending thick black smoke billowing into the air. they were coming home from a water polo match and at this point there is no word on what caused the fire. another bus came to the scene and picked up those students. happening today, demanding action. the father of a reporter shot and killed while on live

television is vowing to do whatever it takes to end what he calls senseless killings across the country. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us now. kris, today's rally stretches from san francisco so washington, d.c. >> there are similar rallies organized all across the country. the group moms against guns will join that heartbroken father to call to an end of gun violence. after alison parker and her cameraman were gunned down by a disgruntled former coworker park's father called for the country to mobilize and do what it takes to end gun violence. today andy parker will attend a rally in washington, d.c. and the san francisco rally along with others across the country are in support of this cause. whatever it takes, in fact, is the social media hashtag that supporters are use to go mobilize and show support. they are also invoking the memories of the victims of school shootings in new town and virginia tech along with the shooter of gabby giffords in arizona. there is a gun in 38% of u.s.

households and according to 2012 fbi data regarding gun deaths 259 people were killed by someone using a gun in self defense but more than 8,300 people were killed in gun-related homicides. 500 children and teenagers die from gunshot wounds every year according to the academy of pediatrics. the rally today is planned for the noon hour right in the center of union square. sam and laura. >> thank you very much. a civil rights group calling for change at whole foods stores nationwide after a security guard allegedly beat a shopper unconscious in oakland. since last week's incident whole foods has hired a new security company and eliminated armed guards from its northern california locations, but the group color of change says that is not enough. it's holding a rally later today demanding an end to armed security at all stores as well as a public apology. police are investigating that incident and the victim is recovering. >> the countdown to kickoff is

pornography charges in court. edgar cavarrubias-padilla is set to enter a plea this morning to nine felony counts of molestation and child pornography. authorities say they have two victims but believe that cavarrubias-padilla may have molested as many as 30 campers. a follow up on an apparent hate crime in san francisco. officers arrested john scenone for painting graffiti slurs in the pert la neighborhood. that information came from witnesses. the words no more chinese were painted in several spots over labor day weekend. scenone faces felony charges. a young san francisco millionaire dogged by accusations of domestic abuse is headed back to court. >> and scott mcgrew it's alleged he has been looking for powerful friends to help him clean up their legal mess. >> jahal was convicted of one count of battery for hitting his girlfriend and sentenced to

probation, but they be a lot of the evidence against him was thrown out. then on probation jahal is accused of striking another woman and the wall street journal says san francisco d.a. george cass cone will try to revote jahal's probation in a court hearing tomorrow. jahal's legal troubles have been a problem both for him and for the companies he has founded. the journal took a look at court documents and e-mails and the paper's reporter jeff elder has published an article says jahal worked for venture capitalist and one time controller steve wesley to try to convince willie brown the former mayor of san francisco to convince the d.a. to go back off. the fees for all this was a million dollars. there's nothing illegal being alleged here and it's not even clear the plan was carried out. the reporter learned about all of this through court documents. the journal of course tried to get responses from all three people in question.

5 to 10 miles an hour, a mainly calm wind at lunchtime today but it does start to pick up along the coast and that's where we have the concerns of rip currents today and also some choppy waves. as we go into the evening it turns back on shore and we will have some cooling, especially along the coast. san jose not much cooler, 96 degrees today and 95 degrees in palo alto. noe valley 84 degrees, 102 novato, 99 napa, oakland 90 degrees and danville today 103 degrees. we've had mostly an offshore wind but we are starting to see that coastal fog come back and the inland temperatures will still be anywhere from 100 to 105 degrees. one they think that may change our forecast and weather as we head into the weekend, here is tropical storm linda and it is moving farther off towards the west of baja, california and into the next couple of days it will spread some moisture into the bay area. looks like for the most part it will be just an increase in cloud cover, but the humidity

will be going up as temperatures go down. expect highs on saturday in the 80s and 90s for most of us in the bay area, by -- in san francisco by monday we are down to 72 degrees. we do have some 70s and 80s in the forecast, more clouds, though, more humidity. won't really feel that much better than what we're going to have today. let's see how the commute is moving with mike. we are looking pretty slow, northbound 101 getting into san francisco. there is a crash just shy of that 280 split. the sand barrels at the split were busted up by an earlier crash, two lanes are blocked until they can clean it up. folks are taking third. the south bay moves smoothly as does the east bay and tri-valley. there is a fire in the hills just off milpitas around weller, reports we could see it from montague expressway, that may an distraction. meanwhile, the san mateo bridge does move smoothly westbound across 92. that's the start for the building over at the peninsula

just getting kick started now. talk being that peninsula as a local government to blame for commute chaos there? changes to one road are leading to gridlock and outrage for calls for the city to put their plan into reverse. red wood sfi is reducing the number of lanes on parts of farm hill boulevard between alameda de las pulgas and canada college. they showed video of cars snaking their way up the hill. what used to take two minutes takes more than ten. drivers say it is time to put the brakes on the test run. >> where you have to plan another five to ten minutes everywhere i go. >> every minute counts. city leaders say the goal is to slow drivers down to prevent accidents. back in 2014 there were 24 crashes just on farm hill. almost a third of them were speed related. >> it's 6:21 coming up a major step forward for terminally ill parents fighting for the right to die on their own terms in california. a controversial bill - allowing

welcome back. it's 6:24. a controversial bill allowing terminally ill patients to determine when they wish to die is one step closer to becoming law. the state assembly approved the death with dignity bill yesterday. the bill would allow doctors to prescribe life ending medication to terminally ill patients. it comes after the highly publicized case of 29-year-old brittany may in order. may nerd. the state senate is expected to approve the bill as well.

it's been a rocky start for california's standardized tests. fuhrman half of california's students proved proficient in math and english. those results released yesterday. statewide to be more specific one-third of public school students tested proficient in matt for their grade level and 44% from proficient in english. low income and minority students had the lowest scores on the smarter balance test. those are considered more rigorous. education officials say they are disappointed with the results but not surprised and that these first scores should be looked at as more of a starting point. new this morning, scientists say fossils found deep in a south african cave reveal a new member of the human family tree. they say the creature shows a surprising ris mix of human life characteristics and may be a group that includes modern people and closest i can tingt relatives. scientists don't know how old those bones are or how he they

"today in the bay's" bob redell live on scene with the breaking details. bob, some of those folks had to bust their way out of the house. >> reporter: we know at least one young man who had to do that. right now which are in front of the two homes that were destroyed on anchor drive and you can see where the fire investigators they are focusing attention on that minivan in the driveway trying to see if that might have been the source of the fire, also focusing on a could you please that's off screen to the right. they are looking at two vehicles to see if one of them caused the fire that caused a lot of destruction on anchor drive. the fire started around 1:20 this morning, sent four people in the hospital with smoke inhalation, one of those people was also burned, we were informed they were transferred to the burn center, fortunately everyone is expected to survive. the far destroyed two houses, damaged another one next door and annum ber started a fire across the street that damaged the house there. now, the fire marshal tells us

alternate in towards san francisco. the build for 880 and 680 heading south in toward fremont and 92 slowing down heading towards san mateo because westbound is your commute. 6:33. only on nbc bay area a nurse allegedly the victim in a sexual assault, is now filing suit against the alameda county sheriff's office. investigators say last september a man cited and then released for indecent exposure was delivered from the santa rita jail to valley care medical center in pleasanton. that's where they say the suspect attacked the nurse. he previously did time for a deadly stabbing and was later treated at napa state hospital, but the nurse's attorney says the hospital never got any warning about the man's violent past. >> nobody was ever alerted to the fact that this was somebody who had been acting out sexually before or that this was somebody who had a significant violent history. >> just as we don't release people out of our jail that get on the bus we don't tell people

on the bus by the way this guy was in on this charge and has had medical history. we don't dough that because the inmates have their privacy rights as well. >> the sheriff's office maintains it would have been against the law to release the suspect's information. the nurse's suit asks for mon danny damages. don't open your doors to strangers, that's the message going out in union city after a man posing as a cable network employee sexual assaulted a woman. here is a sketch of the suspect. that attack happened nearly three weeks ago at a home on san ramone court. police say the man was wearing a red comcast shirt, knocked on the victim's door, when she opened it up he forced his way inside the home. police are warning everyone not to open your door unless you are expecting someone. >> if they are wearing some sort of identifying feature, either a shirt with a company name on t give the company a call and verify that someone should be in the area. >> the suspect here is described adds a white man in his early 30s about 6 feet tall, he has short black hair and a muscular

also in san jose, crews spent the night checking for hot spots after a brush fire came dangerously close to a mobile home park. that fire started around 6:00 last night at oakland road and cory court next tots san jose municipal golf course. firefighters had a tough time getting to the fire. heavy brush in the area helped to push the flames toward the river bend mobile home park. >> we were spraying down our house, the palm trees caught on fire. sorks yeah, it's very scary. >> in total about eight acres burned. no word on how it started but there are several homeless emp camp mts in that area. a big fire overnight, it's breaking news this morning. it happened in bay point. a live look at the charred remains. these are cars that were completely destroyed. two homes also destroyed. two others damaged. seven people were hurt. escaping those flames, four taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, but said to be taken to the burn

some relief this weekend. let's see how the commute is moving with mike. it's moving but we do have more volume of traffic through the north bay. i want to jump to our maps and show you the biggest issue for highway 101. unexpected slowing northbound getting in towards san francisco. now, it looks like things may be shifting as far as those speed sensors but the chp still reports two lanes blocked northbound approaches 280. the jam comes from candlestick up to the scene. use 280 to get around. the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on, there's a slower drive developing for the east shore freeway. here is that area through san rafael, that volume just starting to pick kik in. a lower drive across the san mateo bridge because of the=.@ volume of traffic. a crash southbound 880 has cleared from the roadway but look at a slower drive across the dumbarton bridge as well. 680 toward 880, northbound push through the south bay and the sensors are slowing, a live look at fremont shows you that volume

the air space above your home. you may recall i told you the story of a chicken farmer once. if you don't remember it you need to watch more often. california lawmakers like the idea, they did pass the bill which would have restricted drone flights over private property below 350 feet, but the governor retoed it wednesday. just because there's no specific law, though, that prohibits you from flying around your neighbor's backyard doesn't mean you are free to do it all you want. there are laws against harassment, but passing through would be okay. >> you guys were talking about football, a palo alto company called fooze is warming up an app this morning that will tell you when a game gets exciting. if you're watching packers and bears and the saints/cardinals game is better your phone or tablet will tell you so. fooze says its computers are watching the games, deciding what's most interesting. >> basically we're using computers to model the excitement of games and matches but it's all based on the input

see the clouds and fog rolling back in and a wide range of temperatures even starting out the day. it is 54 degrees in santa rosa, half-moon bay. head over towards livermore you are starting out at 70 degrees, no need for a jacket there. as we go through the day not much of a wind, either. this has been the case we've seen for the past few days. that on-shore flow not really kick nothing and allowing those temperatures especially inland to heat up, but there will be more of an on shore breeze later on this evening. 4:00 winds coming in at about 10 to 15 miles an hour, a little more choppy along the coast and that's where temperatures will be a little bit cooler, but look at these highs today. just like we've seen throughout the week, 100 degrees in los gatos, burlingame 90 degrees, palo alto 95, noe valley 84. there will be a wide range of temperatures in san francisco. napa 99 degrees, oakland 90 and danville today 103 degrees. if you're going out to the beach to cool off keep in mind that there will be high waves at

about 5 to 7 feet and also some rip currents will be possible. so exercise caution and never swim alone. keep an eye on the family and also those pets. our temperatures along the coast will be in the 70s and 80s, but still 90s and 100 degrees inland. over the next couple of days the coastal fog returns and our inland temperatures near 100 degrees, but by this weekend we will get ain't crease in humidity because of this, the remnants of linda that will be moving in, we will be talking more about that and also heading into next week some cooler temperatures looking good there. let's see if this is tooking good on the golden gate bridge with mike. it's hard to tell how good it's looking because there is some return of that carl the fog that kari is auk talking about. traffic is throwing well. we're look at your maps, getting into san francisco on 101, from the peninsula i see the speed sensors clearing up. that trash north 101 at 280, i

people are hurt - and several homes either damaged or ro an update to breaking news. at least seven people hurt, several homes either damaged or destroyed after massive flames erupted in an east bay neighborhood. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell live from bay point with the breaking details. >> reporter: you can see we have a fire investigator with the contra costa county fire department, they are looking into whether that minivan or a could you please that is right off to the other side of your tv screen, if one of those two vehicles was the cause of this fire that caused a lot of damage and destruction on anchor drive in pay point. i want to show you new video. this is the point of view from one of the firefighters, helmet cam video. this is what it looked like when they arrived on the scene around 1:20 this morning. you can see why they had to

immediately go on the defensive. two of the homes were fully involved. two homes destroyed. two more damaged and seven people hurt. three were treated on the scene, four more -- the other four taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, one of those people was also -- one of those persons was also burned, we heard that they have been trans forward a burn center. fortunately all seven people are expected to be okay. reporting live here in bay point, bob redell, "today in the bay." just into our newsroom, another fire we're tracking in the bay area this morning. in one in milpitas. it's happening on weller road near calaveras road in the milpitas hills. so far it's burned four acres. firefighters say it's not spreading quickly. crews tell us there are no structures threatened at this time. happening today, activists across the country including right here in san francisco will gather to demand new legislation on gun control. >> after more tragedy. kris sanchez in our newsroom

with who is spear heading this day of action. >> reporter: this rally is born out of a father's call to action after alison parker and her cameraman were gunned down in virginia. her father called for the country to do what it takes to end gun violence. today he will attend a rally with that battle cry in washington, d.c. there will be similar rallies playing out in san francisco and across the country. on social media supporters are using that hashtag whatever it takes in support. there is a gun in 38% of u.s. homes according to harvard researchers and per 2012 fbi data 259 people were killed by someone using a gun in self defense but more than 8,300 were killed in gun related homicides. 500 children and teens die from gunshot wounds each year according to the american academy of pediatrics. the rally today is at noon right in the middle of union square. >> thank you very much. it is 6:58. switching gears, the bay area certainly getting ready for super bowl 50. a live look at some of the preparations underway for
