14 years ago the events of september 11th changed our country and course of history. today cities all over america pay their respects. >> and that includes right here at home where union city residents remember those on board flight 93 bound for san francisco. plus, present day heroes who also saved lives soak up a city's adoration in sacramento. is back once again as we look across the coast and san francisco and the peninsula. as we start out, though, we're feeling some mild weather, especially in the peninsula and the south bay. it is 67 degrees in the peninsula, the north bay is at 57 degrees and highs today still pretty hot inland, but you can see the trend is heading in the right direction. i will show you the weekend microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. let's see how the commute is moving with mike. good morning. good morning. we're looking at an easy drive at the bay bridge. we do have a couple of cars waiting over off to the left side this morning. a smooth drive for the sensors for the east shore freeway, the maze and oakland. the north bay the same. there is a crash in vallejo, we will talk about that, but it's off of i-80. a smooth flow of traffic around the east bay and across the bridges. remembering september 11th this morning. millions will once again pause to honor and commemorate the

3,000 people lost in the terrorist attacks that day in 2001. this is a live look at new york city this morning at ground zero where one of many remembrance ceremonies will be held at the world trade center site in lower manhattan. we will have a live report from ground zero coming up in the next ten minutes. among the ceremonies happening across the country this morning, one right here in the bay area is going to remember the passengers aboard sfo bound flight 93, the plane that crashed in a field in pennsylvania killing all 40 people on board. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuang live in union city. many of those victims were from the bay area. >> reporter: that's right. as you mentioned it was headed to the bay area, to san francisco international, flight 93 was, and that's why we know that plenty of the passengers, crew members, even the pilot either was from here or lived here. here you have the bay area dedication, the memorial to flight 93. we just saw there are fresh white flowers placed atop the 40 granite stones with the names,

ages and home towns of the 40 victims who were aboard. if you look at the video from last year they have had a ceremony every year since 2007 when this opened so this year will be the ninth year of the ceremony in union city honoring the fallen heroes of flight 93. the morning is set to begin with opening remarks from the mayor and then a presentation of colors by the union city police department honoring the 40 who stormed the cockpit to fight for control of the plane to help prevent the terrorist reaching their intended target believed to be the u.s. capital. meantime, it was rainy for the official opening of the national dedication site for flight 93 in shanksville, pennsylvania where the plane crashed 14 years ago today. this was wednesday when families of the victims got a private viewing of the $26 million visitor center complex which opened to the public yesterday.

there are pictures, videos of the plane's movements, pieces of debris and glass displays and even recordings of the voice messages left by three victims for their families before that crash. very somber morning for so many here in the country. as for the local ceremony you might wonder why in union city. this was started by a hayward man who said he went to city lead nurse hayward, they said no. union city said yes and that's why we have this here. the ceremony set to begin at 10:00 this morning. live in union city, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> a tradition that means so much to that community. we will be covering september 11th ceremonies throughout the morning. to see a complete list of local 9/11 memorials taking part across the bay area head to nbcbayarea.com. happening today on a day when we are honoring heroes three more will be celebrated in sacramento after they thwarted a suspected terror attack on a train in europe. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joining with us a preview of what to expect from today's heroes welcome, heroes parade. >> reporter: it is fitting that those three sacramento friends will be honored for rushing toward danger on the same day that we remember those first responders who did the same at the twin towers on september 11th, 14 years ago. the spirit very much alive. already spencer stone, anthony sadler and alex skarlatos received one of france's highest rewards. that man planned to take out a train full of people as it headed from amsterdam on august 21st. they will honor the three with a parade at noon. the air force planning a fly over. spencer stone talks about not only rushing toward danger, toward that man with an ak, but also the man mark laguellian >> i stopped the bleeding and got him. >> stone nearly lost a thumb in that same attack after the would be terrorist stabbed him with a box cutter, but he is a trained medic with the u.s. air force so he knew exactly what to do.

the parade is at noon in sacramento today. we will have a crew there on the scene. there is the interview is coming up on "the today show" after this newscast. we will try to get you a better preview of that. >> thank you, kris. it is 4:36. one of the survivors in the deadly berkeley balcony collapse three months ago will provide an update on his long recovery. six irish students including one from bay area died when the balcony collapsed suddenly in june. seven other young people including murray survived. he has endured a long recovery and today he may provide an update on when he plans to return home. 4:36. it's one of those days you start out and you've got some fog, so much you can't even see the golden gate bridge behind you, kari. >> yes, it is back. when you start to see the fog during the morning our temperatures will be cooler in some spots, especially in san francisco, butñi i've seen the cars rolling by and they have the windshield wipers on and the streets look wet there.

so we will see how that affects the morning commute. as we look now at some of those temperatures it is now 71 degrees in livermore and highs today, 102 in gilroy, san francisco 80 degrees and 100 degrees today in antioch. so still hot inland. let's get a look at how the roads are moving. we will revisit that golden gate bridge shot. visibility will be an issue. similar to yesterday a little sheen on the roadway. we will ask folks to watch their speeds. a smooth drive on our sensors looking across the golden gate bridge and areas north of there down through novato. over in vallejo there is a crash eastbound 37 right at 29 but it looks like traffic is flowing smoothly at the scene. dublin west 580 a little build, nothing much. back to you. coming up next, we are never going to forget. live to ground zero on the 14th anniversary of 9/11. pausing to remember 9-11 this

somber in new york city on the anniversary of september 11th here. one world trade center has been shrouded in fog, very different from that day 14 years ago. it was a crystal clear day back on september 11th, 2001 when at 8:46 in the morning that first plane ran into the north tower. we were all a bit confused as to what that was about and we watched that unfold. nearly 3,000 died. united 93 crashed a honoring that day with a memorial. they have a new welcome center there in shanksville, pennsylvania where the 40 passengers and crew members are being remembered. so that's taking place this year. also 13,000 american children, they were born on september 11th of 2001. those kids are now 14 years old.

5:00 on your friday morning. carl the fog is back. >> yes. >> you're very excited about this. >> i love carl's tweets. carl the fog on twitter, you follow the fog, very witty. >> you guys have a good back and forth. >> you and that chicken from the other day. >> like the chicken, too. >> it does mean cooler temps. >> yes, especially along the coast and san francisco our temperatures coming down because you don't have all of that intense sunshine beaming down all throughout the day. as we take a live look we see that things are nice and quiet to start out the day, great way to start out the weekend and as you take a look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen our temperatures are heading in the right direction, but there's something else we want to throw at you in this forecast, how about a chance of rain? it looks a little bit more likely as we head into the weekend. and now looking at those

temperatures that will be a little bit cooler as we head into the afternoon. we will say not as hot, 86 degrees today in the peninsula, 94 still in the south bay and we do still have some very hot temperatures, especially for the inland areas, 105 degrees today in the tri-valley and the north bay up to 99 degrees. our wind coming in from the north but the wind will be a little bit more breezy in the afternoon, wind speeds 10 to 15 and up to 20 miles an hour later today and it also comes offshore so they will cool us off as we go into tonight. that weekend tropical moisture will begin to move in. we have been tracking the remnants of linda, it continues to weak frn a depression and will continue to move farther to the north. look at how the moisture starts to surge into southern california and also parts of the bay area. it shows that we could have a chance of rain between saturday night and early sunday morning as our temperatures come down the humidity increases and we will be watching out for that chance of rain.

investors will get data on inflation and consumer sentiment. wall street will also observe a moment of silence just before the start of trading to mark the anniversary of 9/11. the dow rising 76 soints to 16330, the nasdaq adding 39 to 4796. honda gets the okay from california to start testing its driverless cars on public streets, it joins the range of other companies including google and volkswagen that are developing the technology. honda already has a secure testing facility near san francisco. and google moves into mobile payments launching its android pay service in the u.s., it's a one touch app on android devices that can be used in more than a million locations. google users can access android pay with a software update while new users can download is t. from the google pay store. it is estimated to top $1 trillion by 2017. >> he get up kind of like our

before the store intervened. the man who is accused of spraying racist graffiti in san francisco's bay view district is set to appear in court later today as the community is rallying to fight the hateful messages. neighbors today shoulder to shoulder at pleg ga park last night, one of six locations in the district where hateful graffiti appeared. the words have been painted over but people who live on the portola neighborhood said an attack on person is an attack on all. >> we are not going to coal rate t it's one person and we are going to come together 100 strong and say you are not, you know -- this kind of behavior is not accepted in our community. >> not for a second. the suspect john schenone will be in court later today. lat in a immigrants and their supporters in san francisco will stand in

cooler temperatures today? >> not inland, right, kari? >> not inland at all. it will be just like the past few days, 102 degrees today in gilroy. check out pacifica, there are places you can go to cool off, especially right here the shore, but that cooling doesn't make it that far inland. castro 80 degrees, a huge temperature spread even in san francisco. 89 degrees today in napa and oakland 85 degrees and you still see those highs over 100 degrees today for the tri-valley. let's check in with mike. we're looking toward san rafael, 101 not the temperature i'm talking about the freeway, a smooth easy drive right now no slowing from novato down to the golden gate bridge. across the bay bridge the backup we had over at the left approach, it cleared and it's back again. this one looks like the start of that shift at 5:00 approaches, we will see a little more traffic but no problems here or the maze. the san mateo bridge a little to the south looking at the westbound commute look how easy that drive is. eastbound we did have a stall reported but it's on land fall

before you get to the span. no slowing. at 4:54. a follow-up now on a rock band that escaped a fiery limousine -- a fire in a limousine during rush hour on wednesday night. the red dragon cartel band was on their way to a concert in san jose when they burned burning wires and the limo smelled with smoke. >> my steering went out on me so i had to roll to the side there. it >> it keeps your mortality in check and makes you think and realize how grateful i am and we are to be alive and to be playing in this great venue. >> one door did jam, but everyone was able to make it out safely. the band says they have been trying to adjust the air conditioning in the limo when they started to smell burning wires. the chp says the limo's electrical system just shorted

out. they are so lucky to have gotten out. levi stadium may be the new home of the 49ers but today it will be the scene of a mock terror attack. the 2015 urban shield training involves first responders from local, national and international agencies. the planned exercise will simulate a terrorist attack at the stadium and how agencies will work together to get people to safety. this exercise comes ahead of super bowl 50 which happens at levi stadium in february. from berkeley to the white house, presidential praise for a legendary local chef. yesterday president obama gave alice waters the national humanities medicamedal. she started the edible school yard project, it's a program that teaches students to grow and cook their own meals. the president praised waters holistic approach to health and eating. don't miss it tonight, more presidential race high jinx no doubt, in store when donald trump pays a visit to jimmy fallon and the tonight show.
