morning. welcome to the weekend. we finally made it. you know what, it's going to be a lot cooler this weekend. do enjoy that as we step outside. showers on the radar. a lot of it is not going to move into the bay area. it is going to fall apart as we head through the day. tonight we'll see a few showers. today a dry day. definitely notice an increase in humidity and temperatures coming down just a bit. more cloud cover as well. temperatures at san francisco later on, 72 there. mid-80s for east bay and peninsula and inland valleys we'll be talking about low 90s. it will still be warm especially for south bay, north bay and tri-valley. do keep in mind tonight you may hear rain move through. a rumble of thunder or two. we'll talk about that in the upcoming report. >> thank you. a major fire south of sacramento and smoke can be seen across the central valley. the so-called butte fire is 60,000 acres and growing. six homes destroyed and 6500

more threatened. in amador. at one point the entire town of san andreas was ordered to evacuate. that's nearly 3,000 residents. governor brown declared a state of emergency. as for containment, it was downgraded to 5% this morning. >> horrible, scared. scared. it just changes too quickly. >> we built the house our selves 20 years ago. i just hope it's there when we get back. >> more than 20,000 firefighters remain on the frontline. the fire started wednesday. still to word on the cause. ending your life, the bill that gives you the legal right to do that is on the way to the governor's desk. >> the measure passes. >> the state senate has approved the right-to-die bill. it allows doctors to prescribe medication for terminally ill patients. governor brown has 12 days to take action. he can sign it, veto it or do

nothing, which means it will automatically become law. many people are on edge as they wait forth governor's decision. it's both a controversial and emotional issue. >> the oncologists who treat cancer patients don't want the tag of doctor of death or prescriber of death. they want to part of this. they want to prescribe hope. >> had a conversation with brittany three days before she died. a good conversation, productive conversation. hopefully as he deliberates this tough legislation he'll remember that conversation with brittany. >> you may remember brittany maynard became the face of this debate. the 29-year-old moved from california to oregon last year where she could legally end her own life after being diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. new details this morning on a story we first broke. there's another investigate at the santa clara county jail in the wake of the beating death of an inmate.

three correctional deputies are facing murder charges in the killing of inmate michael tyree. we have now learned the investigators believe inmates who witnessed the attack have been intimidated to stay quiet by deputies. yesterday investigators locked down the cellblock where the inmate died and put in new guards. a stolen race car has been found in oakland. the 1967 mustang was taken from a home in san ramon on tuesday. the mustang was inside the trailer attached to a ford truck. detectives found the truck near the open coliseum yesterday. then the helicopter was called in to certainly the area for the trailer. it was found with the mustang inside at a storage yard. no one was there and no one has been arrested. the mustang is worth $100,000. it was a dramatic jewelry heist caught on surveillance cameras. a million dollars stolen in just minutes. now three years later an arrest has been made.

take a look at this video. you can see two armed men storming in and smashing glass than a million dollars worth of jewelry. this happened in los gatos two days before thanksgiving in 2012. after three years, willie thompson and melvin andrews were arrested in oklahoma city in connection to the violent crime. authorities say they found a hidden pouch full of jewels taped to the suspected car battery. the store owner says she's relieved by this news but is still haunted by the robbery. >> it's still, traumatic. every day, even multiple times during the day, our hearts jump. >> los gatos police say they are investigating to see if these suspects may be connected to other jewelry heists around the country. the country has come a long way in 14 years but nothing can erase what happened on september 11th, 2001. yesterday was a day full of tribute to the victims of 9/11.

last night a somber tribute to the thousands of people who lost their lives in the attacks. you're looking at the annual tribute in light shining in new york city. it's in honor of the nearly 3,000 people killed and the heroic acts of first responders. here in the bay area, many families were ripped apart on that day. united flight 93 never made it to san francisco. dozens of people gathered to honor the 40 passengers on board flight 93. that plane crashed in shanksville, pennsylvania, after the passengers tried to overtake the hijackers. everyone on board was killed in shanks villa brand-new memorial now stands in the field where flight 93 crashed. the centerpiece, a wall of photos, 40 feet high, 1 foot for every life lost. outside the white house, president obama and the first lady led a solemn ceremony.

at 8:46 a.m. eastern time, the exact time the first plane crashed into the north tower and world trade center, they held a moment of silence. in sacramento, thousands came out to remember 9/11 by honoring hometown heroes. people lined the streets for a parade at the capital for men that stopped gunmen on a train three weeks ago. anthony sadler, spencer stone risked their lives to save 300 passengers. yesterday a crowd cheered them on. >> we've been all around the world these past couple weeks. i just want you all to know all the thanks we've received everywhere doesn't feel anything in comparison to being in front of our home crowd like this. >> sacramento pulled out all the stops. the men got keys to the city, proclamation by lawmakers and a fly over by a c-17. there was a heightened

sensitivity because of september 11th which made this story even more tennis. a bomb scare on united airlines to south carolina. three minutes into the flight german authorities ordered the plane to return. firefighters and authorities swarmed the 747. everyone was evacuated on the tarmac. nothing suspicious was found and all of the passengers were rebooked onto a later flight. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, caught on camera and posted on instagram, a conversation between two san francisco police officers leads to an investigation. plus the raiders announce they have signed former 49er smith the same day the d.a. filed charges against him. but a humid day. who shot the videos that's what san francisco police chief wants to know after two short videos surfaced on instagram apparently showing two officers making jokes about police shootings and body cameras. the video recorded at happy doughnuts. the officers not identified are overheard discussing body camera videos of police-involved shootings. at one point they joked they would prefer a video of a suspect pointing a gun at them before being shot. >> what you want on video is the guy holding the gun, still pointing at you. >> the video clips were posted online on wednesday. sfpd are now investigating the videos. they would like to speak to the person who filmed the officers. san francisco police officers currently do not wear body cameras. another twist in the $300

million hospital saga in the south bay. yesterday santa clara county locked out workers and executives of turner construction. this hospital project part of an expansion of the valley medical center is two years behind schedule. we broke the story last week. a spokesperson for turner construction says the county's acis bizarre and in bad faith. much more ahead on "today in the bay" coming up, from the niners to the raiders, embattled football star aldon smith has a new team but he's also facing criminal charges. this morning waking up to fog and cloud cover. we are going to see a sunny day, more cloud cover, humidity and even the chance of showers. we're back to break down that full forecast coming up after this. take a live look outside......

shortly. retired tennis player james blake is back in the spotlight but not by his choice. he received a loud applause at the u.s. open last night after an incident on thursday. lake was taken down and handcuffed by an undercover new york police officer in front of his manhattan hotel. blake said the officer used excessive force and never identified himself or told blake why he was being handcuffed. it was a case of mistaken identity. blake is urging the nypd to better train officers when it comes to dealing with minorities. aldon smith has a new job. the troubled football star dumped by the 49ers was signed by the raiders yesterday. coincidentally he also was charged for a misdemeanor dui in santa clara county. smith is among the best defensive players in the nfl but he also has some baggage, three dui arrests in the past four years. now he gets new life in silver and black. "today in the bay" christy smith has more.

the big thing about this, it's remnants of linda, tropical storm linda that moved through. that's going to continue to stream through southern california. even for us a few showers tonight. for today, a dry day for us. if you're doing any traveling along coastline, south, santa barbara, los angeles, san diego expecting a few showers. again, key word here, a few. not talking a whole lot of rain. continuing to fall apart, a beautiful sup rise. from the bay area, south bay looking at nice colors in the sky. you know what, temperatures are going to be warm later this afternoon. in fact, if you're headed to mountain view art and wine festival, from 6:00 in the morning to 6:00 in the evening you'll notice temperatures nice and mild. mid-80s for mountain view. it will be toasty. if you're headed to san francisco, kind of a different story. no 80s and 90s, talking about temperatures coming down. 71 for tomorrow. ghirardelli chocolate festival happening this weekend so get

out and check out tasty tweets. how is that for you? check out the weather. remnant activity moving through from tropical storm linda. it is over the coastal waters this morning. the thing we're going to notice as this moves through, we'll see higher humidity but we're also going to see the chance of showers more so tonight into tomorrow. i want to show you future cast. as it moves through see the main brunt over open waters. even this evening. this is 6:00. you'll notice not a lot of activity across bay area. a dry day, more cloud cover than we saw this past week and definitely more humidity. tomorrow at noon you'll notice again that main brunt of rain still out across open waters. we may get a few showers to start the day. this is when i think it gets interesting tomorrow night into monday morning. we start to see showers on the radar. that's when we have a chance to see any measurable precipitation and that will come in tomorrow morning and monday morning. i think the daytime will be dry as we head to morning hours and

afternoon. it's the overnight hours with the shower activity. that's the best rain. open the windows and sleep on through the overnight hours with the rain. you'll notice those daytime temperatures cooling off big time. we're talking about a 10 degree drop. san jose 87 today. 77 tomorrow. look at that, a nice stretch of 70s all the way this upcoming week even for east bay valleys where we saw temperatures in the triple digits for days on end. nothing like that coming our way this upcoming week. we'll still be warm, 9 1 for east bay valley. mid-80s for tomorrow. even cooler tomorrow, talking about 70s returning for east bay valley by monday. we go back to the 80s. quick peek in san francisco headed to the city today, 70 for today, 71 for tomorrow, then 60 by this upcoming week. nice treat headed our way for all of us. >> sounds good. thank you. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up heading for the finish line after a life threatening battle.

you're watching "today in the bay." >> thanks to advances in technology and trapg, barriers for athletes with physical challenges continue to fall. athletes without the use of their arms or legs, for example, compete in triathlons all the time. one san jose man is breaking new ground. garvin thomas has the story in this morning's bay area proud. >> steve always assumed his story would end with him dying young. you'll understand why in a moment. but then a few years ago, his first child was born, steve decided he needed to write a different story. how he's doing it is our next bay area proud. >> everyone got snacks before we jump into it. a great conversation last week. >> as a youth pastor, steve is, as you can expect, a big believer in following god's

plan. >> you kind of are in control of all those things. >> as for his doctor's plan, not always. >> because my doctors did say, hey, you should stop. >> stop doing triathlons is what they advised. steve should stop trying to push his body to its limits because he now has some unique limitations, namely not having a stomach. it was surgically removed last year. >> yeah. it was like changeing a story. >> that story starts when steve was a young boy. within the span of just a few years, he lost both his father and his sister to a rare form of stomach cancer, one that runs in the family but can't be detected until it's too late. >> there's a picture of me and my dad and my sister together. i just realized everyone in that picture had been gone because of this gastric cancer. now all of a sudden what

happened with them is going to be a different story for me. i get to tell a different story to my daughter. >> which meant steve chose to have his stomach removed to remove any chance of stomach cancer. he's still only one of a handful of people he knows to have made that decision. one that still challenges him to this day. >> i will say for the first year and even to this day, your body is angry at you. >> why then you might ask is steve planning on diving into the waters of monterey bay this weekend for tri-california's triathlon at pacific grove. well, steve says he doesn't want his new story to just be that he still has a life, he wants it to be that he made the most of that life. >> being at the starting line for me, i think, is just going to be another milestone in me recovering as much of my life. >> because that type of gastric cancer that runs in his family is undetectible steve had no

he's going home to ireland. desperate for immigration reform, desperate mom making a pilgrimage to see the pope. she's part of 100 women walking 100 miles. the undocumented women plan to deliver their struggles to the pope in washington, d.c. later this month. jeanne elie tells us why this is significant for a lot of people. >> my brother, it was really hard for my sister and my nephew. >> at home in emeryville, maria morales says she worries about her family being ripped apart. >> afraid that any moment we can hear knocking on the door. >> the single mother is stepping out of the shadows, training to walk 100 miles with 100 women. next week the group called we belong together starts walking from pennsylvania to washington, d.c. hoping pope francis will

time. we need peace. >> nbc bay area news. >> at 7:35, b.a.r.t. riders can expect a much smoother and roomier rush hour commute. starting next week b.a.r.t. says it's making its biggest changes on trains since 2003. includes increased service from san francisco bound line, from the pittsburgh bay point station with 10 car trains. that's the maximum length for b.a.r.t. trains. all three b.a.r.t. trains changed out replaced with trains with at least four cars. parity to the oakland airport will now run regularly every six minutes until 11:00 p.m. when it will run every 20 minutes. service from richmond to millbrae will be extended to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays. much more on "today in the bay." if he stays out of trouble he could be a differencemaker for the raiders. coming up aldon smith's new team.

rockin' tomorrow -- as raiders open the new nfl season you're watching "today in the bay." a taking a look outside, o. o.co, kickoff at 1:25. more to cheer about raider nation, silver and black ahead of their season opener tomorrow adding all-pro player aldon smith. the former 49ers linebacker released over a month ago after another run-in with the law. signed a one-year deal that could be worth $8 million. smith practiced with the raiders yesterday and could play as soon as tomorrow against cincinnati. >> real good player, excited to have him join our family. look forward to working with him. >> you expect to play on sunday. >> we'll make that determination. >> physical shape, conditioning?

expect a mostly cloudy day as we're tracking tropical moisture. remnants from tropical storm linda now making its way toward the coastline of the thing about this, it looks more ominous than it actually is. it's going to fall apart as it moves toward the bay area. we'll see light showers tonight but if you're traveling to santa barbara, los angeles, san diego, a few clouds. for us mostly cloudy skies, palm springs up to redding today. at home, notice high temperatures coming down a little bit but still toasty. 90 for south bay. still warm out there even for north bay we're talking about 91 there. you'll notice a big cooldown along the coastline. look at san francisco today, only 72 degrees. more comfortable, mid-80s for peninsula and east bay. a lot of things happening this weekend. mountain view art and wine festival kicks off today and tomorrow expecting to see mainly sunny skies by this afternoon. temperatures back in the mid-80s both days. also oakland pride happens tomorrow in downtown oakland. temperatures will be cool to

start the day back into the 60s. by 3:00 expect to see sunshine for tomorrow. in fact, cooler weather expected for tomorrow as remnants of linda start to move in and we'll see more cloud cover all weekend long. the other thing you'll notice this weekend, higher humidity all because of that tropical moisture moving in. remnants of linda continuing to make its way to the bay area. main brunt of rain will stay offshore. 7:00 this evening, still dry for us. tonight we'll get a few showers as the thing starts to move a little bit closer. even during the day tomorrow you'll notice mostly cloudy skies. a lot of that activity off the coastline. tomorrow night into monday morning, that's when we'll have a better chance of showers, even a rumble of thunder. you'll notice computer model picking up on that monday morning to start the day. keep in mind all you early morning commuters for monday morning, may run into shower activity. most of the rain will come overnight. that's the good news. during the day a big drop in temperatures especially for tomorrow. 87 for san jose today, 77 for

"today in th "today in the bay" has the story. >> reporter: the art of wine making passed down generations. it's an industry of science outside sacramento campus of uc davis, the education of wine making is streaming toward the future. >> we make wine more successfully than anybody in the planet. >> it's cutting "ellen." >> the largest wine network in

the world. >> fermentation tanks can be monitored from a smartphone. as much as he likes what they can do, more obsessed without. >> ultimate goal, sufficient without water. >> the program looking to revolutionize wine industry by easing its use of water. >> we don't want to use a lot of water. we want to use the same water over and over and over again. this one tubes in the floor. >> the school installed pipe systems that recycle water used to wash wine tanks, one of the biggest water consumers in any tanks. lights and electrical systems powered by the sun. soon the winery's entire water supply will also come from the sky. >> all this rinsing and cleaning of the tanks and everything will all be done through filtered rainwater. >> a new row of steel tanks

required to capture rainwater supplying winery with water even in years with little rain. >> design of these tanks two years even in the droughts we're currently having. >> the school's newest frontier in wine making is new state-of-the-art building, built to house experimental systems. inside recycled car batteries will power the winery at night along with hydrogen generators and ice cold tanks. >> the intention was to design a winery which would operate in what we call a self-sufficient or self sustainable mode. >> with this year's harvest under way winery edging closer to all dependence on traditional water and energy systems. >> we're getting off the grid. that's the greatest thing. >> it's a theme that especially resonates during a drought. >> we want to show industry and the rest of the nation you can make wine using less water than is industry standard. >> winery's new systems are expected to be up and running by next year's harvest, but the

fruits of this labor will soon flow through the art of wine making everywhere. nbc bay area news. >> with a daunting sight at a popular bay area beach, shadowy figures lurking in the shallow waters, sharks spotted uncomfortably close to santa cruz surfers. this video was caught by a helicopter company last week off the beach. the expert tells mercury news the sharks were probably there just resting after eating in deeper waters. a once in a lifetime experience for a fisherman off the coast of san diego. ben lewis was recently out fishing on a boat with some friends when he got an unexpected visit from an extraordinary guest killer whale. he captured video of the whale swimming around the boat which left many of the folks amazed and speechless. that's pretty incredible. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up our friends with pets in need are here and will

this morning -- some special guests from pets in need. executive director al mollica is here with toonces. you're watching "today in the bay." >> this morning special guests in from pets in need. executive director with some crying over there. here with a little kitty that's adorable but a little scared. >> a little scared. >> what do you have here. >> six weeks old. he's very jittery this morning. this the first time he's been away from his mom. >> and the first time on tv probably. >> first time on tv. >> tell us about the need especially this time of year. i know cat season is wrapping up or are we still in that right now. >> kitten season is pretty much winding down. however, we just got a litter of mom and eight kittens yesterday.

that's the case with shelters really across the country. it's the end of kitten season but they are still a great need for people to come in and foster animals. >> when they are this young, it's pretty dangerous for them to be in the shelters. talk about the need of foster parents and what you need to do to be able to help. >> it's much healthier and safer for kittens and puppies to be outside of the shelter. they are able to be socialized more effectively. it's just a healthier environment in a home. it also helps us -- helps shelters to have a lot more space to bring in other animals when we have foster family situations. >> what if you already have a pet at home, a dog who wouldn't be happy if i brought home a cute kitten. what advice do you give people if you do want to foster but not sure it will work in your house. >> bring the dog in and have them interact with animals you're interested in fostering and see how that goes. if it works -- in most cases it does, you're good to go.
