. >> we got just our truck and my family and that's it. at least one life lost, an entire neighborhood gutted as the wildfire continues to race across the north bay. as the valley fire explodes in size, fire crews and residents are scrambling to save whatever they can. thousands evacuated this morning. as the sun comes up on a new day, we'll have new information on how crews plan to try to slow the fire's progress. we have complete live cover age coming up. the breaking news we've been following overnight. flames ripping through lake sonoma and napa counties and now this fire has turned deadly. at least one person has been killed, but as of right now, not much is known about the victim. the valley fire exploded over the weekend growing to 50,000 acres in less than 48 hours. hundreds of homes and businesses already gone and thousands more in its path. right now crews have no handle on this fire. actually zero percent contained. >> we have team coverage from the latest on the 10,000 people evacuated to the conditions firefighters are facing on the ground right now. let's get to it. let's get to stephanie trong in middletown who has been devastated. what are you seeing out there this morning. >> as we weretriving into town you could see parts of the neighborhood completely untouched and places where we're standing where you can see the foundation of homes, shells, just really a lot of debris. even a swing set in the distance and next door and across the

street homes that are still up as though there is no fire here. so far the number, 400 homes destroyed or several hundred i should say, according to cal fire spokesman i just talked to. that figure expected to jump quite a bit as firefighters try to get all the different neighborhoods and all the information. 1,500 personnel attacking the valley fire that started around 1:00 in the afternoon near cobb fueled by the heat conditions and gusty winds that were really bad. cal fire saying that is the story. as for the people many who live in places like middletown aren't sure what they are going to come back to and they're not allowed to return until tuesday. some did stay back to help firefighters and their neighbors like the harpers who own the grocery and hardware store in town. >> we wanted to come here and make sure that we could open it up for the fire mp and anybody else that stayed behind. >> we have a generator running the store outside and we have outside access to the store. so, we'll have somebody here 24

hours. >> the harpers themselves lost everything and at their store they were taking ious from people who didn't have cash. just trying to help where they could. 5,800 people still without power. so much devastation around here and you can, obviously, smell the devastation really with the smoke. we can't see the flames from here. the fire is moving in so many different directions, all directions, really, headed to places like angwin. we're expected to get an update from cal fire between 6:00 and 7:00. >> stephanie, thank you. veteran firefighters say they have never seen a fire spread this fast. take a look at how fast these are spreading. started saturday afternoon. within 24 hours, the fire had scorched more than 7 square miles. that is much bigger than the city of san francisco. this morning thousands waking up

to evacuation shelters with no idea if their homes are still standing. bob redell live at one of those evacuation centers. are you hearing from evacuees this morning? >> scott, many of the people want to know whether or not their home survived this fire. around 10,000 people have evacuated the fire zone. several hundred of them coming to this tent city that has pa d popped up here at the napa county fairgrounds. one of the red cross evacuation centers set up. one of three centers set up for evacu evacuees. many people had little time to get out of the fire if they lived in the town of middletown. suffered a lot of destruction. the so-called valley fire destroyed 100 houses. within the first 15 hours, which one firefighter said is unheard of. testimony of just how bad the drought has been which is why

some residents had to rush out of there. however, some people did stay behind in an attempt to save their homes. including david demonte who suffered burns and bruises. >> hoses, rakes, shovels, anything that you can get that you could use to get fire away from something. >> everything was burning from tree to tree and out on the back, too. >> so, for the people here in the tent city, when are they going to be able to go back to middletown to see if their homes survived or not. the earliest will be tomorrow. it's probably going to be a day or two. tomorrow or wednesday. reporting live here , bob redel people across the bay area seeing and smelling the smoke from the valley fire. air quality officials say some areas may see high concentration of smoke for much of the day. anyone who sees or smells heavy smoke is encouraged to stay

inside. what kind of conditions are they going to face today? i heard about rain, that would help a lot. >> we're looking at some very light rain this morning. mist and drizzle. a lot more humid as we start off the morning. also, we had a shift in the wind. yesterday the winds were coming in from the north. today from the south. so, it will blow the smoke farther off towards the north and towards the central valley. away from the bay area. the big difference from what we had yesterday. all levels of the atmosphere we're getting more of a southerly wind and a lot more hew mi humidity. look at the relative humidity this morning. in the 90s up in the north bay. that will really help add moisture to the air and also a chance of rain in the forecast today. you can see that blowing up this afternoon. we may have some light showers moving across the bay area. and we may have several rounds of that, which, of course, could help out with these wildfires over the next couple of days.

vikings kicks off at 7:20. it shows levi stadium delivered to the city $1 million beyond forecasted revenues during its first year. the other events including concerts and even wrestle mania. all results to $3 million for santa clara operating fund. >> not just the revenue from the report. these other things that the businesses that are making money now because on a sunday or a monday night, they didn't have that business. now they can actually bring in more revenue. >> had an independent auditor will release a more detailed report on the stadium's finances later this month. a little relief for b.a.r.t. commuters. experiencing record ridership. about 430,000 people ride b.a.r.t. on most work days to help handle the crowds. more runs being added across the board are more train cars to the

especially when you consider how hot it was last week and even yesterday. much cooler weather in the forecast. i think you'll like what i have to say as we take a look at the san bruno mountain towards san francisco. we have low clouds this morning and even mist and drizzle starting out in spots and we will have a chance of rain in the forecast today. expecting some light rain, it will be really not a lot to measure. but it will at least have some humidity moisture through the air and give oslittus a little relief from the dry conditions we had. starting out at 58 degrees in napa, livermore 64 degrees in san jose and now at 60 degrees our winds have shifted direction. yesterday we had the smoke and the ash coming down from the wildfires from the north. today our winds have shifted to the south. that will blow anything farther to the north and the wind will really start to pick up. look at the wind speeds at half moon bay. 22 miles per hour and then we go up from there feeling those winds up to 20 miles an hour

throughout the afternoon. once again, coming from the south. so that will also change our temperatures. today at levi stadium. we're looking at temperatures around 70 degrees at 5:00 and by kickoff, it will be 68 degrees, mostly cloudy skies and 65 degrees. a look at all the microclimates. san jose 77 degrees and also 77 in palo alto. sunset at 61 degrees. a lot of clouds and areas of showers and 67 degrees and 72 in santa rosa and livermore today topping out at 80 degrees. let's see how the commute is going early this morning with mike. >> it is early. obviously a light flow of traffic around the bay. 580 westbound your commute direction. we still have a respectable commute. we'll look at your map and way over here. that's where the orange shows up. an earlier issue a stall reported through livermore and no major problems coming over towards the dublin interchange. including the bay bridge toll

you. >> all right, landon, thank you. continue to follow our breaking news, as well. the latest on the napa and lake county fires. explosive wildfires burned at least 400 homes and businesses while leveling entire communities. at least one person has died in the fire. four firefighters are in the hospital. ash spread across the bay area as crews continue to battle these flames. winds carried at least 100 miles to land on cars in san jose. wind's just another obtiobstl stuicals are fighting. asking for evacuees the s f their address so they can go to their homes. people are posting pictures on this facebook page for lost and found pets in lake and napa counties. there are cats, dogs, even

marin county near the point ray station. on saturday night the group was on a professionally guided tour to see bioluminescent light emitted by organisms in the water. the winds picked up and it got too dangerous to paddle back to shore. the kayakers were able to paddle to pelican point. they were picked up by rescue boats and took several hours to get 54 kayakers to safety. two were treated for mild hypothermia. one of japan's most active volcanoes erupted without warning this morning sending thick, black smoke and ash more than a mile into the air. about 100 tourists were in the area but quickly whisked away to safety. causing delays at nearby airports. the country's meteor logical agency are warning that a second eruption is possible. the valley fire in lake county consuming homes at a rapid pace. we'll continue our coverage all morning.

welcome back to you on this fine monday morning. >> 4:54, still early but want to get a look at our forecast. >> this forecast looks so much better than last week. we start out this morning with cloudy skies and even light mist and drizzle, but we do have a chance of rain in the forecast today. here we are at 2:00 in the afternoon. this is what the radar could look like. showing green in parts of the east and north bay. cloudy skies, areas of light rain and that continues into tonight, as well. we may have some passing light showers between tonight and tomorrow, as well.
